In this episode of The Empowering Dietitians Podcast, host and dietitian supervisor Jess Serdikoff Romola builds on the conversation from last week's episode (see below if you missed it!) by addressing how we respond to other dietitians who are practicing in a way that we disagree with. While there are many issues in our field that can spike in-fighting, arguing, and out-right bullying, none lately seem quite as divisive as the debate between weight centric (/weight-normative or "pro" weight loss) care vs. weight inclusive care -- and while Jess has discussed these issues periodically on the podcast in the past, it's time for a fully updated episode. Listen in to hear Jess' take as she refuses to accept the issue as black-or-white, and to get her takeaways on how she believes we need to move forward as a profession. In this episode of The Empowering Dietitians Podcast, host and dietitian supervisor Jess Serdikoff Romola addresses one of the biggest frustrations within the profession of dietetics: the sheer number of people who are not dietitians who insist on doling out nutrition advice. While some of this advice is innocuous, and some actually legitimate, a lot of it flies in the face of what we, as dietitians, know to be true and helpful -- yet they're the ones receiving all of the attention and respect instead of us, and it pisses us off, right?? In this episode, Jess shares her potentially surprising take on the situation, reminding us that there is a fine line between asserting our expertise and falling into a supremacist habit of attempting to assert dominance over another group by wielding our credential as a source of power and superiority. Yeah...she went there. Are you really surprised, though? In this episode, these three dietitians chat through their vision for the Conversation Corner they've created together, the trouble with most traditional "collaborative" spaces in dietetics, and their hope for creating a different community culture within the field moving forward. Jess Serdikoff Romola, dietitian supervisor and host of The Empowering Dietitians Podcast, is joined in this episode by Jessy Griffel, a Montana-based outpatient oncology dietitian and graduate of The Empowering Dietitians Group Program. In this episode, Jessy shares how lost she felt when enrolling in the group program earlier this year - and how she went from questioning her entire career, to being able to set boundaries, make a big career change, and align her work with her core values and the priorities she has in life. Making these changes allowed Jessy to make space in her life for passions and hobbies, and to reclaim parts of her identity as a fully-fledged human beyond her identity professionally as a dietitian. In this episode of The Empowering Dietitians Podcast, host and dietitian supervisor Jess Serdikoff Romola addresses a frustration that has been coming up for many of the dietitians in her supervision programs - the idea that there is "one right way" to do...pretty much anything, as a dietitian. From coaches touting their Proven Frameworks that we follow diligently to build the business of our dreams only to feel disappointed or disconnected, to being tempted by promotions because they're "the next logical step" in your career even when they don't align with your personal values and goals...there are so many ways that dietitians forgo their intuition and individuality for the sake of what they think they "should" do. This episode pulls back the curtain on why this is so common, and what we can be doing instead.
