Oh no. I twisted my knee and felt a pop- did I tear my meniscus? Ugh, do I have to have SURGERY?? It seems like everyone knows somebody who has injured their meniscus. These injuries are quite common, and sports news media outlets cover meniscus tear stories in athletes voraciously. It seems like the athlete has a momentary injury where their knee buckles, they limp off to the sideline, and then we find out they will be out for the rest of the season for meniscus surgery and recovery. Is this the fate for everyone with a meniscus injury?Guess what?? We brought one of our FAVORITE PEOPLE and our mentor, Dr. Charles Bush Joseph to help demystify the meniscus! Chuck has been a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine for 25+ years. He is the former head team physician/surgeon for the Chicago White Sox (a position he held for close to 15 years), and is the past president of the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine. Chuck is a kind, humble, wise (and often hilarious) physician who loves to teach, so let's soak up that knowledge! Topics in this episode include:What is the meniscus? Why do I need it?What kinds of ways can people injure their meniscus? How can I tell if a meniscus injury is acute or chronic?Does a meniscus tear need surgery? Why do I know so many people who have had meniscus tears/surgery?Can we prevent these injuries?Learn more about our good friend and mentor Dr. Charles Bush Joseph (aka Chuck, aka CBJ) HERE :)For more episodes, limited edition merch, or to become a Friend of Your Doctor Friends (and more), follow this link! Also, CHECK OUT AMAZING HEALTH PODCASTS on The Health Podcast Network(For real, this network is AMAZING and has fantastic, evidence-based, honest health information, and we are so happy to partner with them!) For a person who claims she can't really sing or dance, Julie Halston sure has done a lot of Broadway musicals (and rightfully so!). Even during the pandemic, she remained booked and busy despite the circumstances. She even took to the internet to keep the fans entertained (after some persuasion and help from her friend, Jim) with over 40 episodes of her hit web series called “Virtual Halston”. Julie tells the story of starting a theatre company with Charles Busch, and starring in a little play he wrote entitled, "Vampire Lesbians of Sodom" which ended up playing Off-Broadway for six years and opened up countless more opportunities for her. Her love for theatre and acting can be traced all the way back from when she was nine years old and that one afternoon her mom took her and her sisters to watch "West Side Story". She shares how she trained by doing, her three Cs of comedy: confidence, clarity, and commitment, the difference between a one-person show and a straight standup comedy routine, and her late husband's tip when you land that one punchline which is to take a look at the audience. With the cultural change happening today, Julie reflects on its relationship with comedy and how it makes it very tricky, especially when it comes to controversial topics. Apart from cultural change, Julie discusses current New York theatre problems, a possible resurgence in Off-Broadway, the need for public officials to value the arts, and how connecting with other people motivates her to keep doing what she's doing. Julie Halston is a comedian and actress who recently received the Isabelle Stevenson Tony Award for raising awareness and funds for The Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation. She first achieved recognition as an actress through her co-starring performances in the comedy plays of writer-performer, Charles Busch. "Julie Halston's Lifetime of Comedy", a series of one-woman comedy shows that she wrote had a successful Off-Broadway production and earned her an Outer Critics Circle nomination for Best Play and a CBS network development deal. Julie was recently seen on Broadway playing Rita Marshall in “Tootsie”. Her other Broadway credits include “On The Town”, “You Can't Take It With You”, “Anything Goes”, “Hairspray”, “Twentieth Century”, “Gypsy”, “The Women”, and “The Man Who Came To Dinner”. She's a founding member of Charles Bush's theatre company and has collaborated with Charles on numerous productions, including “Vampire Lesbians of Sodom” and “The Divine Sister”. Her tv credits include “Gossip Girl”, “The Good Fight”, “Almost Family”, “Divorce”, and “Law & Order” among others. She is also reprising her role as Bitsy Von Muffling in the “Sex and the City” reboot, “And Just Like That…” During the pandemic, she launched a web series, “Virtual Halston”, and garnered popular acclaim with over 40 episodes on YouTube. Today, Julie plays an asshole talent agent owner in Broadway Podcast Network's new series, "Rolling Calls." This week I continue my series of psychedelic elder confessors with my old friend Charles Bush – Philosopher, Educator, and former Executive Director of the Redwood Senior Center in Fort Bragg, California.Charles Bush has lived on the Mendocino Coast for nearly four decades. Before coming to the Coast, he managed large residential service operations on college campuses. He co-founded Mendocino's successful and long-lived Community School. He retired from his position as director of Chamisa Mesa School near Taos, New Mexico, and became the Executive Director of the Redwood Coast Senior Center, where he served for several years.I've interviewed Charles on my program before about how the philosopher encounters the world through the intermediate organs of perception, including the mind. We have explored how the stories that we weave influence our experience. This morning, we will discuss how meaning is created over the course of a lifetime, investigating the boundary between the mind and physical reality, and in particular, how psychedelics have influenced Charles's stories about the world and his numerous life experiences.

I had the good fortune of interviewing Dr. Charles Bush-Joseph. The Dr. is the team physician for the Chicago White Sox and graduated from University of Michigan Medical School in 1983. He’s currently a Professor at Rush University Medical Center and the Associate Director of the Rush Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship Program. We discussed how athletes could benefit from using cannabis and it’s recovery capabilities thus allowing players to avoid other treatments. We touched on how marijuana can affect an athlete’s performance while working out and some of the adverse effects while using. I reached out to Dr. Bush-Joseph after reading an article in the Chicago Tribune where he was quoted supporting the health benefits of medical cannabis. After reading this article, I had to get the Dr’s. opinion on how athletes can benefit from using cannabis. So I tracked Dr. Bush-Joseph down, and he was kind enough to give me approx. 15 minutes on the phone. I would also like to say Dr. Bush-Jo --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/cheaphomegrow/support
