In this episode of Taco Bout Fertility Tuesday, Dr. Mark Amols breaks down the "window of opportunity"—the crucial period where certain fertility treatments are most effective.Using football analogies, Dr. Amols explains why some treatments, like IUI, can be done at almost any age, while others, like IVF, require a stronger ovarian reserve and should be pursued earlier. He also dives into family-building strategy, showing why those who want multiple children may need to think ahead and bank embryos early rather than waiting until options become limited. This episode covers:

Hal Ackerman is making his second appearance on StoryBeat. Hal spent thirty years teaching screenwriting in UCLA's legendary screenwriting program. Along with Richard Walter and Lew Hunter, Hal helped launch the careers of many dozens of writers whose work you've seen on screens large and small. Hal has sold film and television material to all the outlets. His screenplay Holmeyer's Bridge, holds the unofficial Guinness record for having been continuously optioned for twenty consecutive years, owned during that stretch by two Academy Award winning producers, two Tony Award winning producers and others. His short fiction has appeared in numerous literary journals. “Sweet Day” was recorded by the late Robert Forster. Concrete Charley and The Golden Boy won the 2020 Sports Literate Sport Short contest.Hal's written three “Soft boiled” murder mystery novels about an aging counter-culture P.I. named Harry Stein. The first of those, Stein Stung, won a Lovey award for best first novel. Subsequently, he published Stein Stoned and more recently, Smoke and Lather. I thoroughly enjoyed reading all three Stein books and can tell you Hal delivers a unique take on the detective genre. Funny while being dramatic, Hal's writing is cleverly brilliant and brilliantly clever. I highly recommend all three Harry Stein books to you.Hal's also known for publishing the highly informative and truly useful book, Write Screenplays that Sell: The Ackerman Way. If you want insight from one of the foremost screenwriting teachers of the last half century, make a point to check it out.  Hal's One-Man play, Testosterone: How Prostate Cancer Made a Man of Me (renamed Prick) won the William Saroyan award for drama and was named Best Play at the 2012 New York Solo Festival. In the interest of full disclosure, I'm proud to say I was fortunate to have been one of Hal's many students while I was attending UCLA's Graduate Screenwriting program. www.halackermanwriting.com CreativeLive.com

Through February, the stage production of Fat Ham will premiere at the Cleveland Play House. It's a cleverly hilarious retelling of William Shakespeare's Hamlet through the eyes of "Juicy," a Southern Black mama's boy during a backyard cookout. It unapologetically centers Black joy and flips masculinity on its head. For many, the play's premise might cause a casual reader to double-take. Yet, the production won the 2022 Pulitzer Prize winner for drama and was nominated for five Tony Awards including Best Play. This summer, England's Royal Shakespeare Company itself will stage the European premiere.rnrnrnFrom Hollywood film to literature and theatre productions--contemporary spins on classics are not a new concept. These reinterpretations often reach new audiences, create new models for artistic production, and create space for entire communities.

And so we want something like this that speaks to us and not just to, you know, the small children or the family situation.” “The Open Eye space is so very intimate. And for a one-person show, I think that really gives you a chance to connect with the artist that you're watching. Joel Sass is a wonderful director. Cheryl Willis is an amazing actor who is so intriguing and sucks you in and really connects with audience members.” — Julie Ann NevillCommonweal stages ‘Doubt'Delia Bell, a potter in Lanesboro, recommends seeing the play “Doubt: A Parable” at the Commonweal Theatre. The play won a 2005 Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award for Best Play. Performed by a local cast, the show explores both fact and faith, and Delia says it leaves the audience questioning. The play runs through Nov. 10. Delia explains: “I felt like I was thinking about it for days after. ‘Doubt' is a story about two sisters, two nuns at a school, and a priest. They suspect that he's done something inappropriate with one of the students. And so that's how it stems: it's this story of which side do you believe? And this nun is adamant about this, and the priest is adamant that he is innocent. It just creates doubt within the viewer. That's the whole point; the story is never truly resolved.” As for the production, “It's a simple set. There's a huge window that's very striking. And with the music, you really felt like you were in a church at times. It was just what the story needed.” — Delia Bell

On this week's episode, the hosts excavate the psyche and begin by exploring Inside Out 2, a sophisticated children's movie that tackles the question on every kid's mind: How does one go about crafting a highly integrated ego? A bevy of new emotions join the motley crew living inside of our teenage protagonist Riley's mind, most notably Anxiety, voiced brilliantly by Maya Hawke. The film, a sequel to Pixar's 2015 Academy Award-winner, is filled with wisdom about developmental psychology, but finds itself in murky waters when indirectly tackling issues of free will and the power of the unconscious mind. Then, the panel probes the mind of Andrew McCarthy, whose recent documentary Brats (not to be confused with the new Charli XCX joint) reveals the inner workings of the “Brat Pack,” a term coined by David Blum in a New York Magazine cover story published in 1985. A lifelong member of the “Brat Pack,” McCarthy attempts to reconcile his relationship to the infamous label alongside others who fell under it, including Demi Moore, Rob Lowe, and Emilio Estevez, in a surprisingly personal and peculiar documentary that's quite revealing of McCarthy – either intentionally or not. Finally, the trio considers Google, the tech giant and the subject of Kyle Chayka's piece for The New Yorker, “Is Google S.E.O. Gaslighting the Internet?” Chayka's article sparks a larger conversation about the oversized role search engines have played in our lives and in our understanding of the internet, and comes at a time when Google plans to further integrate A.I. into Search Engine Optimization (S.E.O.) and eliminate the need for writers, journalists, and news organizations. In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, the panel answers an excellent listener request from Rachael: “Discuss your favorite content from the early Internet days, before it became a toxic wasteland.”  Email us at culturefest@slate.com.  We're also accepting Summer Strut submissions until July 1st! Join our conversation on how live theater can be “modernized” and used to challenge the negative contemporary cultural side effects like extremism and alienation with Award-Winning Playwright, Jack Canfora. For centuries people have found inspiration, beauty, and expression in live theater. The Ancient Greeks were the first to wade into the waters of this novel art form, using dance, song, and choral chants to play out their mythic past. Today, many see live theater as a dying art as multimedia storytelling modalities, like streaming TV, film, and the internet, hold a monopoly on our attention. In the face of this threatening final nail in the coffin, Jack is dedicated to presenting both new and underproduced plays via the internet, in ways that maintain the essential dramatic spirit while using the theatrical experience to explore the historical, cultural, and psychological forces shaping life in America and beyond in the 21st Century. He shares on Unlocking Your World of Creativity how to reshape our storytelling imagination to better understand the beauty and potential this ancient art form still holds. Topics Jack Discusses:Re-Lighting The Storytelling Campfire: Why Sharing Stories Is The Glue That Holds Cultures & Communities Together Live Theater Is NOT Dead (It Just Needs Some Reimagining): How To Make Theater More Available, Affordable, & Widely Attended “Democratizing” The Theatrical Experience: Bringing Theater Home To Underprivileged, Underserved, & Ignored Audiences How This Ancient Art Form Can Evolve To Keep Up With The Era Of Netflix & ChillBreaking Down The Barriers That Are Preventing Underproduced, Lesser Known Playwrights From Making On-StageUsing The Theatrical Experience To Change The Culture Of Modern Alienation To One Of Belonging, Empathy & Human ConnectionMore About Jack:John Lawrence "Jack" Canfora is an Award-Winning American playwright, actor, musician, and teacher.
