In this episode, Camila returns to Grief Out Loud six years after her first appearance to share how grief continues to evolve. What began with the sudden loss of her mother at age 21 has now expanded to include the ongoing grief of caregiving for her father, who is living with dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Camila discusses the unique challenges of long-distance caregiving, the differences between sudden loss and gradual decline, and how these two types of grief intersect in her life. She also discusses navigating major life milestones—including getting married during the pandemic—without her mother's presence. We Discuss: The difference between sudden loss and the "slow grief" of watching a parent decline How grief has shifted in the 15+ years since her mother's unexpected death Losing her father as the co-archivist of her mother's life and their family history Managing long-distance caregiving The failures of the elder care system in the U.S. The role of chosen family and support Wedding planning and the question of how to honor her mother's memory The complexity of being a queer person in traditionally heteronormative grief support spaces Feeling like she no longer has parents, even though her father is still alive The therapeutic value of pets Finding moments of connection and joy with her father despite his condition Using poetry as a processing tool for grief About the Guest: Camila is a poet who has published three books of poetry: The Progression of Grief (about losing her mother) New Waters (about falling in love and healthy relationships) The Longevity of Grief (about caring for her father and how different types of grief intersect) This episode is the third in our 2025 three-part series highlighting the voices of communities who have historically been underrepresented in the grief world. The series is part of an ongoing collaboration between Dougy Center and The New York Life Foundation. We are deeply grateful for New York Life Foundation's tireless support and advocacy for children and teens who are grieving. Grief Out Loud is a production of Dougy Center, the National Grief Center for Children and Families in Portland, Oregon.
Not all families are born. Some are made by love, by choice, by showing up when it matters. This Pride, I'm shouting out the ones who didn't have to save me... but did anyway. You didn't have to. But you did.And that's everything.

What does it really mean to belong? In this powerful episode of How to Belong, I'm joined by Alex Alexander — connection advocate, speaker, and host of the Friendship IRL podcast — for an honest conversation about the role friendship plays in our survival, identity, and healing. Alex knows, deeply, that we aren't meant to do life alone. Through her own story — shaped by childhood loneliness and a longing for support — she built the kind of chosen family she always needed. And now, she helps others do the same. Together, we explore the real heart of friendship: not just the joy of being seen, but the pain of letting go. Not just the celebration of connection, but the grief when friendships shift, fade, or end. This is a conversation about creating your village — and holding space for the seasons when it unravels. In This Episode: Why friendship is a form of survival How chosen family helps us feel grounded, safe, and like we belong The quiet heartbreak of friendship breakups and slow fades Navigating static seasons — when friendships stop growing but still matter How to move through the grief of changing relationships without blame or shame What it means to build connection with intention, and why it's never too late to begin again Why It Matters: We often talk about romantic love or family as our main support systems. But friendship — deep, intentional friendship — can be just as life-giving. And when those friendships change or end, we feel it in our bones. Alex reminds us that connection is not a luxury. It's what gets us through. And belonging isn't about being surrounded by people all the time — it's about knowing who will show up, and who we are when we're with them. About Alex: Alex Alexander is the host of Friendship IRL, a podcast and platform that explores the messiness and magic of adult friendship. She helps people build and sustain meaningful relationships, offering tools for connection rooted in compassion, realism, and deep care. Growing up queer in religious spaces often means inheriting a legacy of shame—being told your identity is incompatible with God's love. But what if the very questions that expose our shame could lead us back to belonging? In this Pride Sunday sermon, Antonio Ingram explores how the Genesis story of Adam and Eve offers a surprising framework for understanding queer identity and faith. Drawing on the concept of "chosen family" familiar to many LGBTQ+ folks, he reframes our relationship with the divine not as one of exile and hiding, but as adoption into a family where shame has no place. This isn't about sanitizing faith or ignoring harm done by religious institutions—it's about reclaiming a spiritual heritage that says you belong, exactly as you are. Whether you're questioning, affirming, or somewhere in between, discover how ancient texts speak to modern struggles for dignity and belonging.

Send us a textOne of my favorite romantic tropes in all the world is chosen or found family. Rock bands, the military, college besties, your work husband and siblings, your little clique in high school, your beloved pets past and present—if they choose you and you choose them, they're family. If you had a less than ideal upbringing, stories like these full of emotional complexity along with acceptance, loyalty and love, are so healing and remind us that relations are always our choice.https://www.confessionsofaclosetromantic.comWho wouldn't want to be related to these people?!The amazing cast and crew of The Four Seasons. The intrusive soundtrack drives me bonkers (yes, we know they met in the 80s!) but the camaraderie is just so dang good in Peter's Friends. Friends with Kids owns the chosen family and friends-to-lovers tropes—though you have to suspend disbelief that no one seems to want Ed Burns, who represents the most perfect partner to ever roam the earth.Support the showIf you enjoyed this episode, please click share in your podcast app and tell your friends! Family is supposed to be a source of unconditional love and support - but what happens when it isn't? In this episode of Cropped, Wendy explores the painful and complex reality of family estrangement, sharing her personal experience and hard-earned insights on letting go. She reflects on the grief, guilt, and ultimately, the courage it takes to choose yourself when family relationships no longer serve your well-being. More importantly, she highlights the power of chosen family - the people who see you, support you, and love you not because they have to, but because they want to. If you've ever struggled with family relationships, this episode is a reminder that you are not alone - and that love, belonging, and connection can be found in the people you choose.
DateMay 11, 2025SynopsisIn this sermon, we confront the deep human longing to be seen and explore how Jesus transforms our understanding of belonging. When biological families fall short or relationships fracture, Christ offers a radical alternative: a chosen family built not on bloodlines but on the courage to show up with vulnerability and love. Through locked doors and doubt, Jesus demonstrates that true peace comes not from avoiding pain, but from meeting each other in our woundedness.ReferencesScripture: John 20:19–31 About The Local ChurchFor more information about The Local Church, visit our website. Send us a textINTRODUCTION:De'Vannon discusses the dangers of engaging with New Age rhetoric and spell books without being protected by God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost. He emphasizes the deceptive nature of Lucifer, who can trick people into thinking they're moving forward while actually leading them astray. De'Vannon shares a vision where he saw God bring the universe down to its knees as a warning against venerating it above Him. De'Vannon also discusses the duality of the drag spirit, respect for the drag community, and the serious spiritual consequences of misusing spiritual gifts. He emphasizes the high accountability platform holders have before Yahweh and criticizes the mainstream use of terms like 'universe' which leads people away from Christ. The show touches on the queer community's prosperity and the spiritual gifts God has bestowed upon them. Finally, De'Vannon calls for individual authenticity and a personal relationship with God via Christ, while criticizing the church's mishandling of the queer community and New Age spiritual practices that don't recognize Christ's supremacy.Playlists: https://music.apple.com/profile/DeVannonSeraphinoWebsite: https://www.SexDrugsAndJesus.comINCLUDED IN THIS EPISODE (But not limited to):· Spellbook and Literature Warnings.· God is Going to Overthrow the Idol that has Become the “Universe.”· God Laughs in the Face of Pantheons.· The Spirit of Drag.· Drag Queen Accountability.· The Power of Subtle Influence.· Celebrity Accountability to Yahweh.· Yahweh's Reckoning Against the Church for Queer Abuse.· A Relationship with Christ is Necessary for Heaven.· A Warning To Shamans and Spiritual Leaders.· God Favors the Queer Community.· Miracles are Happening.· Chosen Family was Jesus' Idea.· TIME IS OVER.CONNECT WITH DE'VANNON SERÁPHINO:TikTok: https://shorturl.at/nqyJ4YouTube: https://bit.ly/3daTqCMLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/devannonEmail: SDJPodcastNewYork@Gmail.comThanks for listening!!! Jesus invites us into a family that runs thicker than blood. In this sermon, we explore how Christ forms his chosen family—the church—through rejection, suffering, and a willingness to bring what little we have to him.
The girlies explore the increasingly popular act of going “no contact.” In the first of two episodes, they break down the history of severing ties, how the nuclear family is ultimately an economic trap, and why Sophie Lewis argues we should abolish the family altogether. Digressions include our banishment from the Delta Lounge, the wholesomeness of r/fearofflying and whether we've officially run out of names for medications. Actress and filmmaker Heather Graham joins The Art of Kindness with Robert Peterpaul to discuss acts of kindness throughout her lengthy career, how her new film Chosen Family helped her learn to keep people pleasing under control, holding unconditional self-love and more. HEATHER GRAHAM discovered her passion for acting at an early age and caught the attention of filmmakers with her breakout role in Gus Van Sant's DRUGSTORE COWBOY, for which she received an Independent Spirit Award nomination. Graham went on to land unforgettable roles in the 1997 classic BOOGIE NIGHTS, for which she received the MTV Movie Award for Best Breakthrough Performance, in 1999's AUSTIN POWERS: THE SPY WHO SHAGGED ME and in 2009's THE HANGOVER alongside Bradley Cooper and Zach Galifinakis. Graham has expanded into writing, directing, and producing, proving herself to be a multi-hyphenate leading talent with critically acclaimed, HALF MAGIC, a film she wrote and directed, which was released in theaters and on VOD February 2018. The raunchy, female-driven comedy follows three women set out on a hilarious search for self-fulfillment while overcoming the roadblocks in their personal and professional lives. Graham also executive produced and starred in the feature film CAKE, a romantic comedy also starring Sandra Oh and Cheryl Hines. That self-fulfillment theme, along with a throughline of people pleasing is prevalent in her latest flick - CHOSEN FAMILY. Graham wrote, directed, and starred in the rom-com, which debuted in 2024. This movie is a centerpiece to today's conversation, along with kindness, of course. In addition to more producing, up next, Graham will be featured alongside Nicolas Cage in the Western THE GUNSLINGERS. If you've listened to this podcast before, then you know the concept of the chosen family is very important to me personally. Some people in my chosen family play a variety of roles. Some play just one. Some are back-ups; others are back-ups for my back-ups. Cumulatively, it all adds up: today I feel more supported than I ever have in my life.I've talked about chosen families in other episodes – including Episode 16, about my friend Jeff's, and Episode 19, about my own – but I've never done one like today's, which delves deep into what a chosen family is; why it's important; and how to build one yourself.Chosen families are the people who catch you when you fall but also help springboard you to the next level. Even if you already have a strong familial support system, this matters: you could still be part of a chosen family for someone else. Whether you're building a chosen family out of necessity, like I did, or by choice, they matter. They make our lives richer, our support systems stronger, and our worlds a little bit better. In this episode you'll hear about:What a chosen family is: people who choose you through their words, intentions, and actions (with you choosing them back)The fallacy of the “all-or-nothing” mindset of the chosen family and the different roles chosen family members can play: big, small, medical, etc.My breast-cancer scare and how I leaned on my chosen family while I had to wait for the mammogram and ultrasoundCelebrating holidays, birthdays, vacations, and milestones with chosen family members and how to create traditions with themWays we can support our chosen families – plus, the power of specific support offers (helping with a new baby; driving someone to doctor appointments, etc.)Resources & LinksListen to other episodes about chosen families, including Episode 19, “The One for Little Alex,” and Episode 16. Also be sure to listen to Episode 12, about my Roots of Connection framework.Like what you hear? Mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie, and… zero gratitude? Mom didn't spend a week prepping this feast for you to forget your manners! In this special Thanksgiving episode, Trevin kicks things off by sharing his cozy "Winter 69" dilemma—because it feels better when it's going down. Meanwhile, Amanda gets hilariously personal, recounting a post-partum lactation struggle that every mom can relate to (and laugh at). Do we smell a Pumping-Girl sequel? In Thanksgiving Trivia, Trevin dishes up a historical throwback to when a president pardoned more than just turkeys, while Amanda challenges everyone with the ultimate cranberry question: just how many berries make up a single can? For Story Time, Trevin dives into the record-setting antics of Henry Earl, a man who finds a chosen family in the unlikeliest places, all while breaking the law. Amanda follows with the chaotic tale of Elizabeth Macias, a determined mom on a Black Friday mission to snag Xbox games and survive her kids' antics. Both stories come together to remind us of one thing: being a mom on the holidays is no small feat, especially when kids are downright thankless. Tune in for heartwarming laughs, jaw-dropping petty crimes, and a little holiday chaos as we celebrate the most "Thankless Giving" of all. In thinking about different kinds of love, it's a beautiful thing to realize that God has placed certain people in our lives for specific reasons. Friendship is one of His greatest gifts to us, of all time.Proverbs 17:17 says, “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.”Do you have someone in your life that's not blood-related, but it sure feels like it? In fact, beautiful friendships often feel like a closer relation, than biological family!Notice what the writer of Proverbs tells us. A friend does two things: First, they love us no matter what, and second, God set a time for them to stick with us when we need it the very most.Think about that! That guy you met in third grade will impact the rest of your life. The girl who brought you a coffee on your first day on a new job was meant to do that.As we think about all this and marvel at God's plans, don't forget to turn it around. Think about how we can be that brother or sister to someone in your life.Let's pray.Lord, we thank you so much for the friends you bring to us. Help us to be worthy of that special love. In Jesus' name, amen.Change your shirt, and you can change the world! Save 15% Off your entire purchase of faith-based apparel + gifts at Kerusso.com with code KDD15.

Two thousand years ago, out of the fires of persecution and the blood of martyrs, arose the most diverse and dynamic family that the world has ever seen. Originally known as "The Way", this band of brothers and sisters discovered their true identity in their leader, Jesus of Nazareth, and after his death and resurrection, their movement multiplied exponentially as they welcomed men and women of every nation and race. Amidst this explosion, men like Simon Peter wrote letters to encourage other Christians as they faced pressure and hostility throughout the Roman Empire. Two millennia later, these letters continue to inspire followers of Christ in every corner of the world. Join The Story Church as we explore the letter known as 1 Peter on Sundays this fall (August 18-October 20) to discover our true identity and purpose together.

We're coming full circle as actress and filmmaker, Heather Graham joins J&J for an extra special Sunday episode. 2 years ago in a Benefits episode, Jordana shared the story of how Heather Graham's list for manifesting the perfect partner led her and several friends to meet their husbands in a matter of months, and Jared made a list of his own too. Fast-forward to present day where a listener wrote in to announce she's getting married and those episodes helped her find her man too, so it was finally time Heather Graham knew her impact on the U Up? World. After J&J bring her up to speed on her unknown history with the pod, she shares her affirmations, how her friend group wills what they want into their lives and the ways she's learned to make better choices than what may feel familiar to someone with a dysfunctional past.
