It was a record-breaking holiday weekend at the box office for theaters in the U.S., with a $420 million 5-Day Thanksgiving total, which smashed 2018's previous record of $315.6 million. Lukewarm critic reviews for newcomer Moana 2 did little to dissuade families from attending in droves; by itself the animated sequel broke the record for a 5-Day Thanksgiving opening with its $221 million gross. Not to be left on the sidelines, last week's contenders Wicked and Gladiator II continued to bring in impressive numbers, grossing $117.5 million and $44 million, for second and third place, respectively. In its second weekend, Wicked also became the highest grossing movie based on a Broadway musical and claimed the third best 5-day take for any film. Barry Keoghan is set to portray Ringo Starr in Sam Mendes' Beatles movies, according to the Beatle himself. Mendes is planning to direct four biopics, each dedicated to a band member: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Starr. All of the movies will be released separately in theaters by Sony Pictures. While several stars have been rumored to be circling the splashy project, including Paul Mescal and Joseph Quinn, no deals have been made with any of the cast. On The Town podcast, Dune director Denis Villeneuve spoke on why he doesn't want to direct a Star Wars film. Speaking on The Empire Strikes Back, he said “I was the target audience. I was 10 years old. It went to my brain like a silver bullet. I became obsessed with Star Wars. I mean, The Empire Strikes Back is the movie that I anticipated the most in my life. I saw the movie a billion times onscreen. I was traumatized by The Empire Strikes Back. I adore Star Wars. The problem is that it all derailed in 1983 with Return of the Jedi ... still today, the Ewoks. It turned out to be a comedy for kids. … Star Wars became crystallized in its own mythology, very dogmatic, it seemed like a recipe, no more surprises. So, I'm not dreaming to do a Star Wars because it feels like the code is very codified." Although Disney allowed Ryan Reynolds to exercise a high degree of creative control on this summer's Deadpool and Wolverine, the official script posted to Disney's FYC website has revealed the one joke that the company cut from the film. The line, spoken by Deadpool reads: "“F***! What, we can't even afford one more X-Man? Disney is so cheap. I can barely breathe with all this Mickey Mouse cock in my throat.” Although the majority of the line stayed, the last sentence was changed to: “I got Pinocchio jammed in my ass, and he's lying like crazy.” Disney also released a new trailer for its $200 million live-action, Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot-led, reimagining of Snow White, due to hit theaters March 25, 2025. In heated competition, Netflix has optioned the rights to Callie Hart's fantasy romance BookTok phenom novel Quicksilver. Deadline hears this is a 7-figure deal. During a tech media conference, Warner Bros. Discovery global streaming chief JB Perrette revealed some upcoming targeted dates for Max streaming properties, mentioning that season 3 of The White Lotus will debut in February and discussed a spring 2025 premiere for “The Last of Us” Season 2, a late 2025 launch for “Game of Thrones” prequel “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” and an anticipated 2026 debut for “Euphoria” Season 3. Perrette also revealed that the anticipated Harry Potter series is currently in the casting stage for its 3 lead characters and will target a 2027 release window, rather than a 2026 one. The CW's Arrowverse of DC characters, which kicked off in 2012, has officially ended after Lois & Superman aired its finale, December 2.
Our Guest: Lucie Tassel--Lucie Tassel is an artist with ' experience, and a completely atypical background.-Being French, she naturally made her debut in Paris, where she is originally from. Under the direction of Ned Grujic, she played the role of Helen Sinclair in Bullets Over Broadway and was part of the On The Town and Godspell ensembles at the Théâtre des Variétés in Paris. She also played the role of Poncia in Federico García Lorca's play The House of Bernarda Alba at the Théâtre de La Nouvelle Athènes, directed by Guillaume Bouchède. She was also a member of the chorus of the symphony orchestra accompanying Joe Hisaishi on his last tour of France, and the singers of the Chœur à l'horizon, a Paris-based professional chorus specializing in the musical theatre repertoire, created and directed by Nima Santonja. In 2024, she played the lead role of Della in Sneaky Pete's Wild West Dinner Show at the Legacy Dinner Theatre in Wisconsin, USA. She is also the producer and artistic director of the A-Broad'way Cabaret, in collaboration with Kendra McBride as musical director, which opens this November at Green Room 42 in New York City, and in which she will sing alongside other international artists.-Lucie is a graduate of ECM in Paris, a musical comedy school run by Ned Grujic and Véronique Fruchart, where she trained for 3 years in singing (vocal technique, polyphony, musicianship), dance (classical, jazz, tap), theater (classical, contemporary, mime, clowning) and stage combat (swords, batons). —She also trained in cartoon voice-over with Edwige Chandelier. —To complete her professional training, she moved to New York to study at AMDA, the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, where she benefited from American expertise, honing her skills in singing, dancing and acting.A sportswoman from an early age, she has a passion for salsa and other Latin dances, and enjoys a wide range of disciplines including tennis (her specialty), climbing, skiing, horse-riding and rollerblading. Lucie's career path is atypical: after obtaining her Master's degree in physical and nutritional rehabilitation, she worked as an elementary school teacher in Paris for 5 years before devoting herself fully to the performing arts. Trilingual French-Spanish-English, she is also a traveler who, after visiting several countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and America, fell in love with Venezuela, a country that really helped her grow emotionally and from which she has learned an enormous amount. All these trips, and the people she met along the way, opened her heart and mind, bringing to light what she dared not admit but secretly dreamed of: being an artist.----Join the conversation LiveChat as we raise the questions, give our opinions , and ask you the same questions... --Live Chat with Us Every week... -----Music: Audio Podcast : by Daniel Howse : www.youtube.com/ProfessorSoraMusic ** OneMicNite Theme Song "Chance" & Background Song "Kanye" Host:--Contact/ Follow Marcos on IG/Fb/IMdb/Twitter/TikTok: @MarcosLuis —Show: OneMicNite Podcast with Marcos Luis *Contact/Follow: IG/Fb/Twitter/Tumbler/LinkedIn/Youtube/TikTok @OneMicNite www.OneMicnite.com - - ** Listen to Audio Podcast: Available wherever you download , all digital platforms.. ** Support Us Now: http:www.Anchor.fm/onemicnitetalk ---Follow/Contact -- The Show: All Social Media Fb/Ig/Twitter/Tumbler/TikTok/ *** watch the episodes on Youtube @OneMicNite & www.OneMicNite.com****Please Support this Podcast: PayPal/ Zell Pay: MarcosStarActor@gmail.com Venmo @ Marcoso-Luis-1 CashApp : $MarcosLuis1 Please Visit: The AzulesEn Online store to find Products that Compliment your Lifestyle: Link : https://azulesen.myshopify.com/products/onemicnite-signature-logo-unisex-talk-live-pod-tee --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/onemicnite/support
We're feeling a lot of pride (see what we did there?) about covering the musical FALSETTOS this month. Jeff calls this show the "M word," and our guest calls it "twelve years of his life." Tony-winner Michael Rupert (SWEET CHARITY, LEGALLY BLONDE, ON THE TOWN) began playing the role of Marvin off-off-Broadway in 1980 when MARCH OF THE FALSETTOS (or Act 1 of FALSETTOS) first premiered, and he continued on with the character through the full show's Broadway bow. It earned him his second Tony nomination and a lifetime of memories. Don't miss this very special episode with a very special guest. Michael Rupert is really good at posting memories on Instagram, so follow him @michaelrupertofficial. The best way to support "A Musical Theatre Podcast" is to share it! Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra were both tremendous movie stars, but their names haven't come up very often in 11+ years of Have You Ever Seen. So after covering plenty of dark films in recent weeks, Ryan talks alone in this 589th episode about these singers and dancers in their light musical romp. It's glossy and the songs are mostly good, but this Kelly/Donen affair is also silly and easy to mock. The 2 handsome stars---along with Jules Munshin---share the screen with Betty Garrett, Ann Miller and Vera-Ellen. Garrett and Miller play a couple of fast women, who make it crystal clear just how into the guys they are while Kelly spends an entire day trying to romance the harder-to-get Vera-Ellen. And the things they all accomplish in 24 hours! So obsess about a woman you only know from a poster while you're on shore leave in New York as Ryan monologues about On The Town. On the morning of November 14th, 1943, Leonard Bernstein, the talented 25-year-old assistant conductor of the New York Philharmonic, got a phone call saying he would at last be leading the respected orchestral group — in six hours, that afternoon, with no time to rehearse. The sudden thrust into the spotlight transformed Bernstein into a national celebrity. For almost five decades, the wunderkind would be at the forefront of American music, as a conductor, composer, virtuoso performer, writer, television personality and teacher. He would also help create the most important Broadway musicals of the mid-20th century — On The Town, Wonderful Town and West Side Story. These shows would not only spotlight the talents of its young creator. They would also spotlight the romance and rhythm of New York City.Bernstein is one of New York's most influential cultural figures. He spent most of his life in the city, and that's the focus of today's story – Leonard Bernstein's New York. The new film Maestro, starring Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan, focuses on Bernstein's personal story and intimate life. That specific angle is not our objective today – for the most part. We're looking at the relationship between the creator and his urban inspiration. If there was a huge asteroid hurtling toward Earth threatening to destroy life as we know it and you could see one more show before you die, what would it be? It can be anything you want - a show you've seen before, one that you wish you'd seen, or something you've made up entirely. What would be YOUR Last Show on Earth? This is the podcast in which we ask a special guest the big, BIG question that nobody ever needed or bothered to ask. Our guest this episode is Danny MacDanny is probably best known for playing the role of Dodger Savage in the Channel 4 soap opera Hollyoaks from 2011 to 2015 winning numerous TV awards for his performance and has even won the Sexiest Male Award an incredible nine times. This is the second half of my conversation with Thomas Hischak whose new book is titled The Abbott Touch — Pal Joey, Damn Yankees and the Theatre of George Abbott. If you missed part one, you may want to catch up with the previous episode before listening to this one. George Abbott was a major force in the American Theater for more than 80 years. As an actor, director, playwright, and producer — and often several of those at the same time — he played a significant role in the creation of well over 100 Broadway plays and musicals including Jumbo, The Boys From Syracuse, On The Town, Where's Charlie, Call Me Madam, The Pajama Game, Once Upon A Mattress and Fiorello to name only a few. Thomas Hischak is the author of more than 30 books about Broadway, Hollywood and popular music including Musical Misfires — three decades of Broadway Musical heartbreak, The Mikado to Matilda — British Musicals on the New York Stage, and the Tin Pan Alley Encyclopedia. At the end of our previous episode Thomas Hischak and I were just beginning a discussion of the remarkable list of Broadway greatest writers, directors and choreographers who were all in essence trained and mentored by Mr. Abbott including Rodgers & Hart, Comden, Green & Bernstein, Adler & Ross, Bock & Harnick, Kander & Ebb, Jerome Robbins and most especially, Harold Prince. We also explore his reputation as a "show doctor." We will never now how many shows he advised and "fixed" on their way to Broadway. Become A PATRON of Broadway Nation! For a person who claims she can't really sing or dance, Julie Halston sure has done a lot of Broadway musicals (and rightfully so!). Even during the pandemic, she remained booked and busy despite the circumstances. She even took to the internet to keep the fans entertained (after some persuasion and help from her friend, Jim) with over 40 episodes of her hit web series called “Virtual Halston”. Julie tells the story of starting a theatre company with Charles Busch, and starring in a little play he wrote entitled, "Vampire Lesbians of Sodom" which ended up playing Off-Broadway for six years and opened up countless more opportunities for her. Her love for theatre and acting can be traced all the way back from when she was nine years old and that one afternoon her mom took her and her sisters to watch "West Side Story". She shares how she trained by doing, her three Cs of comedy: confidence, clarity, and commitment, the difference between a one-person show and a straight standup comedy routine, and her late husband's tip when you land that one punchline which is to take a look at the audience. With the cultural change happening today, Julie reflects on its relationship with comedy and how it makes it very tricky, especially when it comes to controversial topics. Apart from cultural change, Julie discusses current New York theatre problems, a possible resurgence in Off-Broadway, the need for public officials to value the arts, and how connecting with other people motivates her to keep doing what she's doing. Julie Halston is a comedian and actress who recently received the Isabelle Stevenson Tony Award for raising awareness and funds for The Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation. She first achieved recognition as an actress through her co-starring performances in the comedy plays of writer-performer, Charles Busch. "Julie Halston's Lifetime of Comedy", a series of one-woman comedy shows that she wrote had a successful Off-Broadway production and earned her an Outer Critics Circle nomination for Best Play and a CBS network development deal. Julie was recently seen on Broadway playing Rita Marshall in “Tootsie”. Her other Broadway credits include “On The Town”, “You Can't Take It With You”, “Anything Goes”, “Hairspray”, “Twentieth Century”, “Gypsy”, “The Women”, and “The Man Who Came To Dinner”. She's a founding member of Charles Bush's theatre company and has collaborated with Charles on numerous productions, including “Vampire Lesbians of Sodom” and “The Divine Sister”. Her tv credits include “Gossip Girl”, “The Good Fight”, “Almost Family”, “Divorce”, and “Law & Order” among others. She is also reprising her role as Bitsy Von Muffling in the “Sex and the City” reboot, “And Just Like That…” During the pandemic, she launched a web series, “Virtual Halston”, and garnered popular acclaim with over 40 episodes on YouTube. Today, Julie plays an asshole talent agent owner in Broadway Podcast Network's new series, "Rolling Calls." It's our final episode of 2022 and we're joined by Henry Giardina, Los Angeles-based film critic and co-host of Totally Trans Podcast, who discovered our show by chance while fending off an airport anxiety attack. This week the 1940s draw to a close with ON THE TOWN (1949), the most iconic and memorable of the three Gene Kelly/Frank Sinatra musicals. We're in more than capable hands as Henry takes us on a three-and-a-half hour deep dive into the film, the original stage musical, his childhood affinity with "the other guy" Jules Munshin and the gender politics and social climate of the postwar era. Henry also teaches us about PTSD among returned WWII servicemen and introduces us to two underrated and rarely-seen Gene Kelly films on the topic, COMBAT FATIGUE IRRITABILITY (1945) and IT'S ALWAYS FAIR WEATHER (1955). Then, things come full circle and become surprisingly psychedelic. Strap in for this one; with the help of an incredible guest, we're finishing Season 1 and saying goodbye to the 1940s in a big way. It was an absolute pleasure to have Henry on the show. We highly recommend listening to his podcast, Totally Trans: Searching for the Trans Canon, and subscribing to his Substack. In our terrific tenth episode, we delve into the hallucinogenic possibilities of the most surreal movie genre of them all -- the musical! And as strange as the musical is, it was the most normie form of entertainment for a good chunk of the 20th Century, and is still capable of giving us the utter batshit weirdness of CATS from time to time. For our first film, we go back to the height of MGM and the technicolor musical for ON THE TOWN from 1949 where Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra and Jules Munshin are a trio of horny sailors looking for love and destroying brontosaurus fossils while on 24-hour leave in New York City. Along the way, they meet Ann Miller as a beautiful woman scientist who's smitten with Munshin because he looks like a neanderthal; Betty Garrett as an aggressively amorous cabbie with a hankering for Frank; and Very-Ellen as "Miss Turnstiles," the object of Kelly's affections and the subject of the movie's dreamlike dance sequences. With satire that still lands and groundbreaking location cinematography, this one was a big hit with young stoners Cory & Philena. In our second feature, British director Ken Russell and Roger Daltry of The Who, fresh off their success in TOMMY, get even weirder with the rock opera for LISZTOMANIA (1975), an anachronism-heavy take on the life of Hungarian composer (1811-1886), a long-haired heartthrob who sent young women into fits of hysteria. Russell's obsessions with sex, paganism and Third Reich iconography are all on display here as this movie is chock full o' towering dicks, bare breasts and Nazi vampires. Plus we have the lead singer of The Who being enveloped by a mammoth vagina, Ringo Starr as the Pope, AND Nell Campbell from Rocky Horror Picture Show completing her mission to be in the weirdest musicals of 1975. And Rick Wakeman converted the music of Liszt into its prog rock synth score and plays Thor in a way you'll never see the thunder god portrayed in the MCU. Weed recs are definitely essential for this one. Both movies are currently streaming on HBOMax. I just checked and they're still there but watch 'em while you can before HBO is nothing but Ghost Adventures spinoffs. Sorry for some of the audio hiccups here. Weed recommendations are in the episode along with Bob Calhoun's special tribute to his friend "Judo" Gene LeBell, the legendary martial artist, pro wrestler and Hollywood stuntman. Our guest today is the incomparable Pat McCorkle, head and founder of McCorkle Casting and a Covid survivor! As actors, we understand the frustration of the industry during the pandemic, so we were eager to hear Pat's point of view from the other side of the table. Welcome to this weeks Monday episode everyone. To get the ball rolling Justin puts Hayden on the spot and asks the question of 'if you could pick a super power what would it be?'. With the writing still on pause it allowed for some extended viewing this week.WHATCHA BEEN WATCHING: 'Boy Meets World' continues to impresses Hayden, even though he keeps missing episodes! 'Empire' and 'Family Business' each have that cliff hanger final season episode (gotta love how tv does that). 'Dad, stop embarrassing me' has Jamie Foxx flexing his comedic chops and we all benefit from it. 'On The Town' (1949) with Gene Kelly & Frank Sinatra, is the one film Hayden gets to and he tries to convince Justin that some musicals are really good. Justin digs into 'Hip Hop Evolution' & 'The Defiant Ones', which lends itself to the formation of a new script idea. While 'Alita: Battle Angel' gets Justin thinking about the human elements of being a cyborg and finding your identity. FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLIDER: TRUTH.Does it hurt? Some of the hits in this episode do. Here we tackle the penultimate episode and break down everything that we know so far, and uncover some things that we each missed! RACHAELS REVIEW: After giving her response to Justin's trivia question, Rachael gives us her weekly rundown, followed by her review of the newly release 'Mortal Kombat' film. #woodenbullsonparade #Truth #JohnWannabeWalker fromacertainpointofviewpodcast@gmail.com

SHOWS: In Trousers, 42nd Street (2000), Oklahoma (2019) For over forty years New York audiences have had the great pleasure of watching three-time Tony nominee Mary Testa light up the stage with her brilliant work in such shows as In Trousers, Barnum, The Rink, On The Town, 42nd Street, Xanadu, Oklahoma, Marie Christine, Queen of the Mist, and First Daughter Suite, amongst so many more. Now, Mary sits down with Rob and Kevin to look back on her career, her triumphs, and an intimate conversation about her strength and desire to keep telling stories. Mary pulls back the curtain on her career to discuss how she riffed in front of Stephen Sondheim (and how she got banned from some casting directors because of it), what it was like creating In Trousers, and why her ability to tell nothing but the truth has been her creative guiding light. Also, Mary shines the spotlight on William Finn, Betty Comden and Adolph Green, and Chita Rivera! This week, Jennifer, Jamie, and Rob sit down with Broadway veteran Jose Llana at Orso Restaurant. We discuss Jose's life and 24-year career in the theater, including his marriage, the 2016 election, his roles in The King and I, Flower Drum Song, and On The Town. We also chat about representation on Broadway, having to tell his Filipina mother he was playing dictator Ferdinand Marcos in Here Lies Love, and the incontrovertible coolness of David Byrne. Before Jose joins us, we discuss our love for Orso, The Big Apple, and how to relax and survive living in the city. Finally, Rob gives us a bit of insight into the wonderful wealth of Filipino performers working on Broadway. This week's music: Jose singing “I Have Dreamed” from The King and I, Jose and Lea Salonga singing “You Are Beautiful” from Flower Drum Song, “Stay Up Late” by “The Talking Heads,” Jose Singing “A Perfect Hand” from Here Lies Love, and Ruthie Ann Miles singing “Why Don't You Love Me” and “Here Lies Love,” from Here Lies Love. The recent death of legendary Hollywood director Stanley Donen — the so-called “king of the Hollywood musical,” responsible for such classics as Singin' in the Rain, On The Town, Funny Face, Royal Wedding, Charade, and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers — prompts this long overdue reminiscence from our own Reed Martin who in 2006 got to hang out with Mr. Donen while working on a new play at the Magic Theatre in San Francisco written and directed by the great Elaine May who, until his death, was Stanley's partner. Reed tells stories about not only Mr. Donen and Ms. May but remembers the phalanx of bold-faced names who were involved with this production (pictured surrounding Reed, clockwise): Daveed Diggs, Phil Donahue, Marlo Thomas, and Mark Rydell. Featuring the graciousness of the rich and famous; secrets of filming the famous dancing on a ceiling sequence with Fred Astaire; a fantastic story about John Wayne; and the truth of the old saying: you don't always remember what people say but you always remember how they make you feel. (Length 19:57) The post Remembering Stanley Donen appeared first on Reduced Shakespeare Company.
