Clogher Valley Free Presbyterian Audio Ministry

The sermon presents Apollos as a gifted yet incomplete believer whose eloquence and deep knowledge of Scripture were transformed by humble discipleship under Aquila and Priscilla, who corrected his incomplete understanding of Christ's redemptive work. Though well-versed in the teachings of John the Baptist and skilled in rhetoric and biblical scholarship, Apollos lacked personal faith in Christ until he was taught the full gospel of salvation through the Spirit. His subsequent ministry in Corinth, marked by powerful public defense of Christ from the Scriptures, demonstrates how God uses even flawed individuals when they are open to correction and growth. The narrative underscores the vital roles of encouragement, humility, and partnership in the body of Christ, illustrating how every believer—regardless of background or gifting—contributes to the advancement of God's kingdom. Ultimately, Apollos' journey calls the congregation to examine their own faith: are they merely knowledgeable in religious matters, or do they truly know Christ personally and live with fervent devotion?

With the church at Corinth becoming arrogant and prideful after Paul left, he writes to them making fun of their attitude and he contrasts it with himself and the other apostles as being made a spectacle to the whole world by God. He says they are like a Greek play in the local theater, out there for the whole cosmos to see. But then he compares them to prisoners of war which is rough, opposite of what the church at Corinth is like. He could possibly be referring to The Lachish reliefs which were recently found and put in a British museum. They are carvings in Ninevah showing Sennacherib defeating Judah and taking prisoners back to Ninevah. You can read about it in 2 Kings 18-19. Paul is telling the church to learn some humility and quit the division that is going on between them.

The church at Corinth was concerned with who baptized them, which minister of the gospel they liked the best, and this was stirring up jealousy, strife, contention, arguments, and all of this was leading to division. Paul explains to the church that he, along with Peter, Apollos, and any other teacher that came to the church to speak, is nothing. They are all laborers that have a job—to plant and water seed. That's it. That's all we can do! We plant seed, we water seed, but we cannot make seed produce fruit! Only God can do that! Therefore, he is telling the church in Corinth, these people you are dividing over are not important at all. The one who is important is Jesus and you should be focusing all of your time and energy on him!

Jeffrey Mercier knows what it's like to rebuild from the ground up. In this powerful episode of Live Well, Earn Well, Jeffrey—founder of ARC Develop LLC and known online as Orator of Divinity—shares how he went from addiction, chaos, and self-destruction to becoming a men's transformational coach who helps men heal deep father wounds, reclaim their identity, and live with discipline, purpose, and integrity. We talk about why so many men feel lost, angry, or checked out… and how unhealed wounds, shame, and a lack of strong male role models show up in families, relationships, business, and leadership. Jeffrey breaks down what personal responsibility really looks like, why you're not responsible for where you started—but are responsible for what you do next—and how learning to "fail well" became one of his greatest skills as an entrepreneur. If you work with men, love a man, or are a man who's ready to stop running from your past and start building a future you're proud of, this conversation will give you both hope and practical perspective. In this episode, we explore: Why father wounds and absent role models quietly shape identity, choices, and behavior How men often try to fill an inner void with money, status, numbing, or distraction The difference between reacting from instinct vs. living with intention and purpose What personal responsibility actually means—and how it becomes the turning point Jeffrey's journey through addiction, failed businesses, and ego… to servant leadership The power of strong male mentors and why young men desperately need them How coaching and community can help men step out of shame and into strength     Connect with Jeffrey (Orator of Divinity): Instagram & YouTube: @OratorOfDivinity Facebook: Jeffrey R. Paul was dealing with a lot of stuff with the church at Corinth but one thing in particular he was wrestling with was the local philosophers. These philosophers were engrained in the Corinthian culture, especially with the rich. These philosophers would come to town with their fancy speeches trying to persuade young men to become their followers so they could teach them their ways and they too, could sound educated and impress the crowds. They would charge the rich families a fortune to send their children to their school. Paul says to the church at Corinth, “I came to you with a simple thought...the gospel, and I let the Holy Spirit do his thing.”

During the trial of Caelius, Cicero launched a devastating character assassination, branding Clodia the "Palatine Medea" and accusing her of prostitution and murder. Southon emphasizes that because women were barred from speaking in court, Clodia was defenseless against these public insinuations. Cicero even edited his own speeches before passing them to history to ensure his version of events remained the dominant narrative, regardless of the truth of his claims. (8)

Paul tells the church at Corinth the power is in the cross of Christ. He says to the Greeks the cross is foolish and they refuse to believe while to the Jews, the cross is foolishness and they seek a sign to prove that it is true. This is nothing new for this was going on when Jesus was there among them performing miracles. There are so many people today trying to gain power, doing whatever they can to climb the ladder to get power. All they have to do is look to the cross and the gospel yet, they reject it. Sure they will climb the ladder and have power, even a lot of money, but like Jesus said, “What is your soul worth? You can gain the whole world and lose your soul.” Then what? When we take our last breath, none of that power will help us. When we cross into eternity, the only thing that will matter is Jesus and whether we had a relationship with him or not.

Drafted by Republicans, he served four terms as Governor of Maine, focusing on economic reconstruction and railroad expansion. However, his private life was marred by constant pain from his internal war wounds; he often had to work lying down and could not sit erect. This physical suffering, combined with his absences, strained his marriage to Fanny, who struggled with depression and the isolation of their life during his political years.1863 GETTYSBURG

I greet you in Jesus' precious name!It is Saturday morning, 29th November 2025, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We go straight to the Gospel of John 7:44-46 (Amplified Version): ”Some of them wanted to arrest Him (that's Jesus), but no one laid hands on Him. Then the guards went [back] to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, “Why did you not bring Him [here with you]?” The guards replied, “Never [at any time] has a man talked the way this Man talks!” Oh, what an orator! You know what an orator is? I looked up the Oxford dictionary - "a person who is good at public speaking”. Well, who was the greatest orator of all time? His name is Jesus Christ! When the High Priest's soldiers were told to go and arrest Him and they heard Him speaking, they couldn't touch Him. They said, ”We have never ever heard a man speak like this before.”I've got a book, it's called ”Speeches That Changed The World”, and it's got the most famous speeches, right from the beginning, right up until now, all kinds of speeches, good ones, bad ones, ugly ones. We just think of Abraham Lincoln. He said, ”Government of the people, by the people, for the people.” Then we look at Winston Churchill during the Second World War, he said, ”Blood, toil, tears and sweat. We shall fight on the beaches, but we will never give up.” Prime Minister Nehru, at the Independence of India said, ”At the stroke of the midnight hour, India will awake.” Then we think of John F Kennedy. He said, "Ask not what your country can do for you. Rather ask what you can do for your country.” But I want to tell you about my friend, Jesus Christ. He spoke to me, almost audibly, through a man, not even a preacher, we're talking about laymen. They came to our little church and started to tell us about Jesus, and it was like my eyes were opened for the first time and Jesus said, ”Come to me, all of you who labour and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart and you will find rest for your souls”Today, listen to the greatest speaker who has ever lived upon the earth. He saved my soul. He can save your soul today if you will open your spiritual ears and listen to what He wants to tell you.Jesus bless you and have a wonderful day.Goodbye.

In this webinar, Winston Brady, Kellie Scripter, and Matt Ogle conducted a model seminar for teachers over the opening chapters of Quintilian's "On the Education of an Orator." They presented and model best practices for seminar teaching and the kinds of habits, disposition, and overall love of learning teachers need to encourage in their students. That way, students and teachers alike can get the most out of reading these significant texts.Quintilian lived from 35 to 100 AD and wrote an influential treatise on education, the aptly-titled "On the Education of an Orator." The work is one of a precious few on education and teaching from the ancient world and covers a wide variety of topics to equip a Roman boy to become an orator, a student "not (merely) blameless in morals only" but also equipped with "every excellence of mind."The work is subsequently ideal for classical educators to read to remind ourselves of the goals of classical education and how we can bring out the very best in our students.

In this gripping episode of "History For Weirdos," we dive into the shadowy world of espionage during the American Civil War to spotlight a figure whose audacity and heroism remain largely unsung: Abraham Galloway. Born into bondage but never shackled by it, Galloway's daring escape from slavery was just the prelude to a life of defiance, espionage, and unwavering fight for freedom. As a spy for the Union, Galloway ventured deep into Confederate territory, risking everything to bring critical intelligence back to the North. But who was this enigmatic figure, and why has history largely forgotten his extraordinary contributions? Beyond his exploits as a spy, Galloway emerged as a formidable force in the fight for civil rights, becoming one of the first African Americans elected to the North Carolina legislature during Reconstruction. This episode not only uncovers Galloway's pivotal role in shaping the outcome of the Civil War but also celebrates his enduring legacy as a pioneer in the struggle for equality. When the United States was founded in 1776, its citizens didn't think of themselves as “Americans.” They were New Yorkers or Virginians or Pennsylvanians. It was decades later that the seeds of American nationalism—identifying with one's own nation and supporting its broader interests—began to take root. But what kind of nationalism should Americans embrace? The state-focused and racist nationalism of Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson? Or the belief that the U.S. Constitution made all Americans one nation, indivisible, which Daniel Webster and others espoused? Today's guest is Joel Richard Paul, author of Indivisible: Daniel Webster and the Birth of American Nationalism. We look at the story of how Webster, a young New Hampshire attorney turned politician, rose to national prominence through his powerful oratory and unwavering belief in the United States and captured the national imagination. In his speeches, on the floors of the House and Senate, in court, and as Secretary of State, Webster argued that the Constitution was not a compact made by states but an expression of the will of all Americans. As the greatest orator of his age, Webster saw his speeches and writings published widely, and his stirring rhetoric convinced Americans to see themselves differently, as a nation bound together by a government of laws, not parochial interests. As these ideas took root, they influenced future leaders, among them Abraham Lincoln, who drew on them to hold the nation together during the Civil War.

The qualities that made Franklin Roosevelt great weren't things that he was born with but arguable the things that he had to learn in the hardest years of his life. Many thought of Roosevelt as the quintessential political natural. But the essential Roosevelt traits – his strategic ability, his gifts as an orator, his understanding of suffering and his own ability to ease it – were all born in the seven years he spent trying to recover from the effects of polio. To understand what made FDR a great president in a time of cascading global crises, you have to look at the lessons he took away from the greatest crisis of his own life.Today's guest is Jonathan Darman, author of “Becoming FDR: The Personal Crisis That Made a President.” We explore his searing struggle with polio, and how he emerged from illness with a strength and wisdom that propelled him towards one of the most consequential and ambitious presidencies in U.S. history. FDR's bout with polio transformed him into a leader with the compassion and courage to lead and motivate Americans through the Great Depression and World War II.Before polio, FDR was a handsome, vain, shallow politician who expected that things would always come easy to him because, up to then, most things always had. “He had a youthful lack of humility,” said his friend (and future Labor Secretary) Frances Perkins, “a streak of self-righteousness and a deafness to the hopes, fears, and aspirations which are the common lot.” Getting polio and losing the use of his legs at age 39 upended his plans for a future that had always seemed certain. It forced him to develop new skills – oratorical presence, strategic thinking, a sense of timing. It also helped him discover what suffering is really like and his own unique ability to ease it in others. “I would like to think that he would have done the things he did without his paralysis,” Perkins later said, “but . . . I don't think he would have unless somebody had dealt him a blow between the eyes.”FDR's experience taught him the practical necessities that people most require when they are experiencing adversity. For FDR, these necessities included clear, honest, detailed communication about the path ahead and ways to accurately measure progress; support systems that foster a sense of dignity, purpose and community; experts who provide advice but also promote a sense of partnership and autonomy in one's own recovery; and the ability to sustain optimism while also staying focused on what is achievable and real
