Should voters have to prove their competence? How do balance ethics & efficacy in the world of politics? Dr. Jason Brennan is a Flanigan Family professor at Georgetown Business School who agrees that democracies outperform most historical alternatives, but suggests that some form of Epistocracy (meaning the rule of the knowledgeable) could be worth experimenting with. In other words, the more of an informed voter you are, the more weight your vote carries.  He covers why democracy may not be as bullet proof as we believe, what the practical applications of epistocracy could look like, education's disappointing impact on informed voting & the right and wrong way to become a more informed voter. This episode originally aired on April 15, 2024 If you liked this episode, you'll also like episode 136: VIRTUE SIGNALING. From the "Inshallah" controversy to spreading unconfirmed viral claims, we're exposing the dangerous influence of celebrities who fail to do their homework. Seattle is facing a tough decision: delay or defer vital transportation projects to fund anti-ICE signs. This move raises questions about the city's priorities and financial management. According to an article in The Center Square, the city might have to put off much-needed infrastructure improvements. This decision is sparking controversy, especially among residents who rely on these transportation projects. The potential delays could impact commute times, accessibility, and overall economic growth in the region. Critics argue that the funds could be better allocated to address more pressing issues like homelessness or public safety. The situation highlights the ongoing debate over immigration enforcement and the role of local governments in addressing federal issues. This situation is a symptom of a larger problem of mismanagement and misplaced priorities in Seattle.

This one's pretty straightforward: we're talking about virtue signaling — that thing where people post their “good deeds” or hot takes online mostly to look good or feel important. We get into why it feels like everyone has to say something about everything these days, how filming charity for views can actually make the whole thing feel kind of gross, and why St. Joseph's quiet, private life is honestly the better way. We cover: - How even priests catch themselves wanting to look holy online. - How silence and just doing your job for God beats all the noise. - That viral clip of Shia LaBeouf saying he'd just kiss Jesus' feet and nothing else — raw faith or virtue signaling? - The trap of judging the people closest to you while preaching to strangers on the internet. ––– 00:00 Hospital Visit Story 02:01 Pride and Hidden Motives 03:35 St Joseph and Silence 06:33 Social Media Noise 12:57 Charity for Views 16:23 Judgment at Home 18:24 Priesthood Not Politics 21:53 Wonder vs Curiosity 27:37 Mother Olga Hidden Works 29:15 Old Internet Nostalgia 31:33 Shia LaBeouf's Honesty 34:27 Saints Who Struggled 36:00 Embracing the Fight 38:35 Shia LaBeouf Clip 41:33 Meeting Jesus Today 46:03 Tacos and Party Game 53:11 Chaotic End ––– ▶️ Video version of this episode: https://youtu.be/7aw2sHO8GhM

Is Europe's defense investment wave real, or is it simply venture capital wrapped in a Ukrainian flag? The debate featured Nicholas Nelson, General Partner at Archangel Ventures, and Sebastian von Ribbentrop, Founding Partner at Join Capital. At stake is more than narrative. It is about capability, returns, sovereignty — and the structural future of European capital markets.Until recently, defense investing in Europe was controversial. Many institutional LPs avoided the sector. ESG mandates were interpreted narrowly. Defense was often softened under the label “dual-use.” Russia's invasion of Ukraine changed the landscape. Defense budgets rose. Political rhetoric shifted. Venture capital began flowing into the sector at unprecedented levels. But the central question remains:Is this a structural capital reallocation — or a short-term momentum trade? The debate crystallizes around one fault line: defense-first vs dual-use.Nicholas argues Europe's hesitation to embrace defense-first investing is both strategically and financially misguided. Defense-only startups, he contends, have historically outperformed. Dual-use often dilutes focus by forcing two distinct go-to-market motions. Real capability requires designing directly for the warfighter — not adapting commercial products later. In his view, dual-use in Europe often functions as a reputational hedge rather than a strategy.Sebastian counters that dual-use is not compromise — it is risk management. Advanced technologies can serve both industrial and defense customers without duplicating entire teams. Diversified revenue reduces concentration risk. Non-dilutive defense contracts can substitute late-stage equity rounds in a region where growth capital remains thin. And Europe's comparative advantage may lie less in building vertically integrated primes — and more in dominating high-precision subsystems. As the conversation escalates, it moves beyond product strategy into a deeper structural issue: scale capital. Even where early-stage defense investment has improved, later-stage funding remains limited. Several leading European defense startups have relied heavily on US or Middle Eastern growth capital.Which raises uncomfortable questions:Can Europe build independent defense champions without foreign growth capital? Will its strongest companies inevitably “pick a flag” as they scale? Is fragmentation across 30+ procurement regimes Europe's structural disadvantage?Without coordination at scale, even strong early-stage ecosystems struggle to produce global champions. What's covered:00:30 Framing the question — structural shift or narrative trade?02:00 From taboo to trend — ESG optics and the Ukraine inflection point04:15 Defense-first vs dual-use — the core strategic divide07:30 The defense-first case — focus, procurement alignment, and capability building11:00 The dual-use counterargument — diversification and risk management14:30 Subsystems vs primes — where Europe's advantage may lie18:00 The growth capital gap — reliance on US and Middle Eastern funding21:00 “Picking a flag” — sovereignty vs scale23:30 Procurement fragmentation — 30+ regimes and scaling friction26:00 Final takeaway — Europe's defense future depends on capital conviction and coordination

Ep. 370 - Virtue Signaling vs. True Virtue

The Living Waters Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 25, 2025 60:44 Transcription Available

True virtue becomes visible only when the desire to walk faithfully before God outweighs the instinct to manage appearances for others. Ray, E.Z., Mark, and Oscar examine how virtue signaling has become a modern way of seeking approval, noting that the human urge to belong often pressures believers to display moral outrage or spiritual discipline without genuine conviction. The guys explain that people have always looked for safety in groups, and that this instinct can quietly influence the heart, even in Christian settings. The guys discuss how social media amplifies this struggle by rewarding the performance of virtue. They point out how easy it is to post a Bible verse, a devotional highlight, or a polished quote without allowing those truths to shape character. Christian leaders carry an added weight because their online presence serves as a form of shepherding, and the guys worry that many settle for shallow guidance rather than deep spiritual engagement. Mark recalls receiving a negative review simply for quoting someone unpopular, and the guys use that example to show how expectations can override thoughtful reflection. The guys turn to resisting the lure of appearances and returning to the steady work of communion with God. Virtue comes from God's own righteousness, justice, and truth, and the guys emphasize that Christians need to slow down, detach from screens, and develop habits that shape the heart rather than the image. They encourage believers to reflect on whether frequent posting influences their behavior or simply reveals what already exists beneath the surface. The more people disconnect from quiet spaces, the easier it becomes to slip into spiritual performance rather than genuine spiritual depth. They suggest taking small steps, such as dedicating the first moments of the day to reflection rather than scrolling. In closing, the guys stress that holiness is demonstrated not through public declarations but through consistent, humble acts of repentance and love. They warn against overcorrecting by trying too hard to avoid virtue signaling, which can distract from the gospel. Instead, they urge believers to show real love, confess sin promptly, and accept correction without defensiveness. They remind listeners that the true mark of a Christian is a heart focused on God's approval rather than human applause. The difference between virtue signaling and true virtue is the motive; when believers seek the Lord's approval above all, it will change how they live, respond, and quietly grow.Send us a textThanks for listening! Many believers confuse the appearance of virtue with its substance. Ray, E.Z., Mark, and Oscar explain how virtue signaling arises from fear, peer pressure, and the desire for approval, showing how social media rewards superficial displays of spirituality. They clarify that true virtue cannot be created through posts or outrage but develops through taking time, studying Scripture deeply, and allowing God's righteousness to transform motives. They warn that when believers seek visibility, they risk drifting from the quiet work of communion with God and settling for habits that enhance their image rather than strengthen the soul. The guys point out how easy it is to share spiritual content without letting it take root, leading to performance rather than genuine transformation. They encourage Christians to confess sin promptly, seek God's approval above human applause, and establish daily routines that shape the heart. In doing so, believers learn to live with sincerity, depth, and a consistent pursuit of true virtue.Send us a textThanks for listening! You're listening to American Ground Radio with Louis R. Avallone and Stephen Parr. This is the full show for November 3, 2025. 0:30 We unpack the controversy out of Dearborn, Michigan, where Mayor Abdullah Hammoud told a Christian resident he was “not welcome” in the city after objecting to a street being renamed for a man who once praised Hezbollah. We break down the mayor’s remarks, the misuse of the term “Islamophobe,” and what this moment says about free speech, civic respect, and the growing confusion between disagreement and hate. 9:30 Plus, we cover the Top 3 Things You Need to Know. According to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, the Federal Government spent less money in 2025 than it did in 2024. Some details are finally coming out about the alleged Halloween Terror Plot in Michigan. The FBI filed a 73 page complaint in court against 2 men under the age of 21 and a teenager. Tomorrow is election day in several states across the country.New York City will be selecting a new mayor, and most polls say communist anti-semite Zohran Mamdani will win easily. 12:30 Get NSorb from Victory Nutrition International for 20% off. Go to vni.life/agr and use the promo code AGR20. 13:30 We take a hard look at what it means to be American in 2025 — and whether today’s immigration policies are helping or hurting the nation’s civic fabric. From nostalgia for Ellis Island to sharp criticism of mass resettlement policies, assimilation and shared civic norms — including pledging allegiance to the Republic — are non-negotiable for national unity. 16:00 The American Mamas are back together! After a wild stretch of floods, car troubles, and chaos, Kimberly Burleson rejoins Teri Netterville for a candid and fiery conversation about boundaries, truth, and common sense in a world that seems to have lost all three. In this episode, the Mamas share a surprising story about a massage appointment gone wrong — when “preference” meets “policy” and customer comfort gets dismissed in the name of virtue signaling. They also unpack Glamour UK’s controversial “Women of the Year” cover featuring transgender models and ask: how far can society bend reality before it breaks? If you'd like to ask our American Mamas a question, go to our website, AmericanGroundRadio.com/mamas and click on the Ask the Mamas button. 23:00 We dive into actor George Clooney’s surprising reversal — admitting that Democrats made a mistake pushing Joe Biden aside for Kamala Harris during the 2024 election. 26:00 We Dig Deep into another glaring example of failure under the Biden administration — a 54% surge in SNAP (food stamp) spending, now topping $120 billion a year. We unpack new revelations from Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, who says an internal review uncovered thousands of cases of EBT card fraud — from duplicate benefits across states to payments to the deceased. Even more alarming? Twenty-one states — nearly all Democrat-run — refused to share their data, with several even suing the federal government for asking where the money went. We contrast the left’s “compassion equals more checks” philosophy with a conservative vision of empowerment and accountability. True compassion lifts people up rather than locking them into dependence. 32:30 Get Prodovite from Victory Nutrition International for 20% off. Go to vni.life/agr and use the promo code AGR20. 33:30 After nearly forty years in Congress, Nancy Pelosi is reportedly preparing to step away from politics — announcing she won’t seek re-election in 2026. We reflect on Pelosi’s legacy — from her two Trump impeachments and dramatic moments on the House floor to her role in deepening partisan division. 36:00 Plus, the U.S. Navy has manager 273 nuclear reactors over 6,200 reactor-years and 177 million miles — all with zero accidents, zero injuries, and zero environmental pollution, and that's a Bright Spot. 40:30 Violence continues in Chicago. Over Halloween weekend alone, at least 23 people were shot across the city. As President Trump calls to deploy the National Guard to restore order, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and federal courts have resisted — even as the Supreme Court signals growing concern. The people of Chicago will continue to suffer so long as they continue to vote for Democrats who hate Donald Trump. It's time for somebody to step up and say, "Whoa!" 42:30 And we finish off with Scott Johnson, a STEAM teacher at Red Cross Elementary in Kentucky, whose creativity and compassion changed a young boy’s life. Cracker Barrel is just the latest company that just can't seem to keep its list of virtues up to date for its virtue signaling campaigns. But what is this virtue signaling and why are companies getting behind the transgender insanity with such enthusiasm? Why would they risk the health of their companies to keep a small fraction of the transgender community happy? We dig into Chat GPT's worldview of existentialism, and define insanity biblically.
