Grace Offends Human Fairness: Through the parable of the vineyard workers, we are reminded that salvation is a generous gift from God, operating on an entirely different economy than human merit, entitlement, or comparison.Conclusion: The session wraps up with a poignant reflection question for the audience: "What is your view of God right now?" A small view of God leads us to trust ourselves, judge others, and seek comfort, whereas a big view of God empowers us to live boldly by faith, expect trials, and generously extend grace to others.

He warns of inevitable resistance: they will face opposition from culture, religious leaders, and even family members, as allegiance to Him can divide households and bring persecution. Yet, Jesus promises divine help—the Spirit will speak through them in moments of trial—and calls for wise, innocent endurance, urging believers to flee persecution when possible not for self-preservation, but to reach more people with the gospel.Ultimately, Pastor Karl challenges the church: a faith that costs nothing accomplishes nothing. The true disciple pledges exclusive allegiance to Jesus, accepting the responsibility to live as radical image-bearers of Christ in the world, no matter the personal price. Even miracle-workers may hear, "I never knew you; depart from me," underscoring that salvation demands an intimate, mutual relationship: truly knowing Jesus and being known by Him, not superficial confession or religious activity without heart surrender and obedience.Pastor Karl illustrates this with the parable of the wise and foolish builders: Everyone hears Jesus' words, but only doers build on the rock. In his 1937 book The Cost of Discipleship, Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote one of the most profound pieces of literature on grace. This sermon kicks off a series of sermons on the book. In this week's message, Joshua Brown teaches about cheap grace, why we have sold it to the masses, and how to return to costly grace.

Last week, we delved into the days leading up to Jesus' crucifixion, examining His entry into Jerusalem as the Bridegroom. Today, we continue our journey as we explore the events of Tuesday, where Jesus encounters a group of religious leaders known as the Sadducees. These skeptics attempt to challenge Jesus with a hypothetical scenario, but little do they know that Jesus is about to dismantle their flawed assumptions with His authoritative grace. My favorite part is probably a little later in our episode, when we explore the significance of the anointing of Jesus by Mary of Bethany, connecting it to the Passover and Jesus' imminent crucifixion. This matchless, true story from Scripture emphasizes the power of pouring out our praise and worship for the Lord, just as Mary did, sustaining us through difficult times. Join us as we uncover the depth of Jesus' teachings, the beauty of His identity, and how He ultimately utilizes challenging moments to test and refine our faith. MORE DETAILS ABOUT THIS EPISODE I sure hope that you've been enjoying our recent episodes diving into the events leading up to Jesus' crucifixion. Today, we start by exploring Jesus' interactions with the skeptical Sadducees and the valuable lessons we can glean from them. We begin by examining the flawed assumptions of the Sadducees regarding resurrection and eternal life. The Sadducees' story of the woman married to seven brothers is not a realistic scenario, even by their own standards. The Sadducees use this story to challenge Jesus and convey their skepticism about the concept of eternal life. But let's not be too quick to judge the Sadducees, because we, too, often enter situations with preconceived assumptions and may even further our own agenda by criticizing others' beliefs. This passage emphasizes the importance of looking beyond our own biases and being open to the truth that Jesus presents. We then continue our journey through the gospel of Matthew and find ourselves in Matthew chapters 24 and 25, which discuss future events, known as eschatology, surrounding Jesus' second coming. While these prophecies point to a future generation of Jews and their role in the end times, at the same time some of these prophecies have already been fulfilled. There are still many yet to happen. Our readings today emphasize the message of watchfulness and perseverance that Jesus imparts to believers. We will ponder insights from parables such as the 10 virgins, the parable of the talents, and the parable of the goats and the sheep, illustrating the urgency and importance of being prepared for Christ's return. As we continue in this holy season leading up to Easter, let us remember the importance of seeking truth, remaining watchful, and allowing Jesus to test and refine us. Meet Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the Christian so strong in his faith that he went directly against Hitler and the Nazi party, and it cost him everything. Bonhoeffer believed grace is too precious for us to waste. He wrote, "It is costly because it costs a man his life, and it is grace because it gives a man the only true life. It is costly because it condemns sin, and grace because it justifies the sinner. Above all, it is costly because it cost God the life of his Son...and what has cost God much cannot be cheap for us.”

Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a Protestant Minister at the time of Hitler who opposed him and paid with his life.
