Pass the Baton: Empowering Students in Music Education, a Podcast for Music Teachers
In Episode 90, Theresa and Kathryn are joined by Chris Gleason for a thought-provoking conversation about grading. Chris challenges traditional notions of grading and assessment, offering compelling stories and practical strategies for shifting from compliance-based systems to student-centered, intrinsic learning environments. With humor, wisdom, and years of classroom experience, Chris explores what it means to foster agency, curiosity, and deep reflection in music education—and why students' growth can't (and shouldn't) be reduced to a number or letter grade.Whether you're brand new to the concept of ungrading or already dipping your toes in these waters, this episode is sure to get you thinking deeply about your own classroom practices. Chris reminds us that meaningful learning comes from relationships, relevance, and reflection—not from points, charts, or checklists. Tune in for an honest, encouraging, and energizing discussion that will leave you inspired to rethink assessment and empowered to make bold changes that truly benefit your students. Free Florida is in the midst of a fight over where the Red State is headed: Deeper Red or Turning a Distinct Shade of Blue. The legislation that allows Governor DeSantis to run for President without resigning contains multiple poison election pills which could be forced down the throats of the Conservative majority of freedom-loving residents of the Sunshine State. In short, if we don't fix this electoral Trojan Horse now, then Florida could go full Marxist – just like California. It's our first ever podcast "swap" episode! Brad and Erin were recently asked to be guests on the podcast "Beyond Artless", a music education podcast hosted by Chris Gleason, Peter Haberman, and Phil Ostrander. Since basically nobody listens to their podcast (for good reason, the hosts themselves admit) we decided to help promote their show by streaming the complete episode here in our feed. If you're enjoying Band in Minnesota, please leave us a rating or review in your podcasting app - and be sure to subscribe to "Beyond Artless" as well. The description of their pod is below: “Beyond ArtLess" with Chris Gleason, Peter Haberman & Phil Ostrander is a podcast that explores the friendships and the community that exists in and outside of the arts and arts education. In each episode of Beyond ArtLess, one of the hosts reveals his mystery guest to the other two. What comes next is a fun-filled conversation revealing the joy of friendship and the artlessness of the hosts. Unlike most successful classrooms, this show is not well planned and probably not worth your time. Chris Gleason (Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, formerly Patrick Marsh Middle School, Sun Prairie, Wisconsin) Phil Ostrander (University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire) Peter Haberman (Concordia College, Moorhead, MN)
Eric Songer (Chaska Middle School West) is one of the state's most prominent band directors! He joins us to talk about his passion for teaching popular music through a variety of (for lack of a better term) "modern band" emphasis in his teaching. His school features a variety of bands including rock, hip hop, country and bluegrass, and much more. He teaches lessons in DJ technique, songwriting, music history, theory, and more. Of course, he also directs concert bands and jazz bands, too. According to Songer, this is the future of music education and his vision is being embraced by more and more teachers and schools in our state and around the country. ALSO: Our "What's On Your Stand?" session features the music of band composer Chandler Wilson. PLUG: We got a preview of the new Beyond ArtLess podcast with Chris Gleason, Peter Haberman, and Phil Ostrander, and we recommend it! LOOKING AHEAD: We have great episodes coming soon! We will be doing at least two episodes at/about the MMEA Midwinter Convention and also have an upcoming episode about the challenges of teaching in small, rural schools. Thanks for being a supporter!
“Nobody's gonna know. They're gonna know.”If you've been on TikTok in the past year, you're most likely familiar with these two sentences, first drolly uttered in a post by TikTok creator Chris Gleason in 2020. The post has become a hit and has been viewed more than 14 million times. But the sound is more famous than the video. When uploading a video to TikTok, the creator has the option to make that video's audio a “sound” that other users can easily use in their own videos — lip-syncing to it, adding more noise on top of it or treating it like a soundtrack. Gleason's sound has been used in at least 336,000 other videos, to humorous, dramatic and sometimes eerie effect. The journalist Charlotte Shane delves into the world of repurposed sounds, exploring how TikTok and other apps have enabled, as she writes in her recent article for The Times, “cross-user riffing and engagement, like quote-tweeting for audio.” She also considers “what makes a sound compelling beyond musical qualities or linguistic meaning.”While “brainfeel” may be an apt buzzword for the sensation audio memes elicit, Ms. Shane writes, it is more than a mere trend: We have entered the “era of the audio meme.”This story was written by Charlotte Shane and recorded by Audm. Gina is joined by an everyday husband, dad, fund manager, and introvert who is also a neighbor on mission. Chris Gleason has been following the Lord since he was a child, but something happened when he was 8 years old that caused him to say that he would never share the Gospel with anyone ever again. That is until about 7 years ago when he blindly agreed to go to a 3DM training event that he says, "floored him." Chris' story is one of God breaking into his life in such a powerful way that he ended up experiencing the redemption of his 8-year-old self and was given a powerful ministry of "presence" in his suburban neighborhood where he is seeing spiritual fruit as he allows the Holy Spirit to lead him and his family on mission.Featured Resource: On-Ramp Huddles. www.3dmovements.com/huddles
Chris Gleason talks to me about educational purpose and autonomy during the quarantine, and how students can effectively practice (even if they don't have an instrument at home). Patrick and Rich (Endurance Nation Coaches/Founders) have the opportunity to travel to all of the North American Ironman (TM) races throughout the year and meet a ton of Endurance Nation members. But many of our members -- though they train and network with each other virtually -- only know each other as email addresses, forum names and signatures, rarely getting the chance to connect in the real world. We thought it would fun for us, the Team, and our listeners to interview our athletes. To put a name, a voice and a face to an email address/forum handle and learn more about each other! So without further ado...Meet Chris Gleason (Chris G), an EN OG (original gangsta) with us since almost Day 1. You'll find Chris outside Albany, or in airport on business travel, or stalking the IMLP course during training camps in the summer.
