After presenting each individual top ten list, they decide upon the official Into the Aether Top Five of 2021. From all of us at ITA, we hope you have a wonderful 2022! We love you, thank you for listening to and supporting the show and for being part of such a wonderful corner of the internet! How do we balance the importance of individual human agency with our understanding of larger socio-economic structures? How do we explore crucial “what ifs” in history? How do we make this stuff accessible to a wider audience? These are the questions central to Daniel Bessner and Matt Christman's new podcast mini-series “Hinge Points”. In this conversation we talk historical turning points, history podcasting, and Marx. Indeed, the conversation seemed to be guided by the famous line from “The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Napoleon”: “Men make their own history, but they do not make it as they please; they do not make it under self-selected circumstances, but under circumstances existing already, given and transmitted from the past.” The same could be said for history podcasts. “Hinge Points” can be found on the “Chapo Trap House” Patreon page and other podcast sites. Matt Christman is best known for his work on “Chapo Trap House”, a political humor podcast. He also posts almost daily vlogs where he reflects on history. He co-authored the Chapo Guide to Revolution with his fellow Chapo Trap House hosts. Matt and I chatted about that book previously on the New Books Network. Daniel Bessner, an intellectual historian of U.S. foreign relations, is the author of Democracy in Exile: Hans Speier and the Rise of the Defense Intellectual (Cornell, 2018) and co-editor, with Nicolas Guilhot, of The Decisionist Imagination: Sovereignty, Social Science, and Democracy in the Twentieth Century (Berghahn, 2019). He currently holds the Joff Hanauer Honors Professorship in Western Civilization at the University of Washington. He is also a Non-Resident Fellow at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft and a Contributing Editor at Jacobin. In 2019-2020, he served as a foreign policy advisor to Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign. In addition to his scholarly articles, he has published in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, and other venues. Daniel Bessner also co-hosts the “American Prestige” podcast with Derek Davison. Michael G. Vann is a professor of world history at California State University, Sacramento. A specialist in imperialism and the Cold War in Southeast Asia, he is the author of The Great Hanoi Rat Hunt: Empires, Disease, and Modernity in French Colonial Vietnam (Oxford University Press, 2018). Who is the most fascinating historical figure that you have never heard of? David Lester and Marcus Rediker make a good case that it was Benjamin Lay. Based on Rediker's 2017 The Fearless Benjamin Lay: The Quaker Dwarf Who Became the First Revolutionary Abolitionist, Lester has created a moving, engaging, and eye-opening graphic novel. Lay embodied inter-sectional resistance centuries before the term was coined. In the 18th century he not only fought against slavery and condemned racism but supported women's rights, criticized class disparities, and promoted the human treatment of animals. Lay was a vegetarian who lived in a humble cave with his beloved wife. He condemned the hypocrisy of the slave owning church leadership. The diminutive Lay engaged in powerful acts of guerilla theater that included smashing expensive Chinese porcelain in the public square and splashing fake blood about a Quaker meeting house. Well-known after his death as a founder of the abolitionist movement, post-Civil War white supremacists marginalized Benjamin Lay. Prophet Against Slavery: Benjamin Lay (Beacon Press, 2021) will revive the memory of this role model of speaking truth to power. David Lester is an author and graphic artist. His work includes but is not limited to 1919: A Graphic History of the Winnipeg General Strike, Direct Action Gets the Goods: A Graphic History of the Strike in Canada, Drawn To Change: Graphic Histories of Working Class Struggle, and The Listener, a graphic novel. He is also the guitarist for the underground duo Mecca Normal. Marcus Rediker is a Distinguished Professor of Atlantic History at the University of Pittsburg and a Guest Curator at the J. M. W. Turner Gallery, Tate Britain. He is the author of numerous books on the history of piracy, the slave trade, and the Atlantic world such as The Many Headed Hydra, The Slave Ship: A Human History, Villains of all Nations, Outlaws of the Atlantic, The Amistad, and The Fearless Benjamin Lay: The Quaker Dwarf who became the First Revolutionary Abolitionist. Michael G. Vann is a professor of world history at California State University, Sacramento. A specialist in imperialism and the Cold War in Southeast Asia, he is the author of The Great Hanoi Rat Hunt: Empires, Disease, and Modernity in French Colonial Vietnam (Oxford University Press, 2018). Hey everybody I'm Ryan and welcome back to Eggs! This week we have a unique episode for you going back in time to feature one of my favorite interviews from the past. Why you ask? For people who didn't catch last week's show, for the next little bit, approximately 12 weeks, we're going to be doing things a little differently. As discussed at length on last week's show, my favorite co-host and yours, Mike, has begun and is now up to his eyeballs in an exciting new adventure. Mike is presently taking part in a super-intensive web development Bootcamp as part of a big career pivot he's exploring. Off-air he and I have talked and he's explained he's presently programming from 10 AM to midnight, between classwork and homework, and recording this show at our regular cadence simply isn't doable for him. That said, we are working diligently to put together some fun programming for you and take advantage of this break in our regularly scheduled program. More on that in the coming weeks, but let's chat about today's drop. Today we are going way back in time to July 2019 for one of my all-time favorite interviews with the author, speaker, and philanthropist, Michael G. Dash. Michaels story is one wrought with ups and downs from drug and gambling addiction to building multimillion-dollar businesses. At the time he appeared in-person on Eggs from our downtown Salt Lake City studio, he was promoting his book Chasing the High which details his story in all of its gritty details all so that those he encounters or works with as part of his F.A.T.E. Program, can learn from his experience.I am really excited to share this show with new listeners who may have missed it, and even more for those OGs who have heard it but could benefit from hearing it again. So, without further adieu, join me in going all the way back to a pre-COVID world, July 11, 2019, for a conversation with Michael G. Dash. Let's go!----Hey everyone, welcome back to a special edition of EGGS. This week we have special guest Michael G. Dash. Michael Dash is an entrepreneur, business owner, author, speaker, coach, and philanthropist available for speaking engagements, both for young people and for active professionals. Michael has had a collection of unique experiences from “chasing the high” with his prior gambling and drug addiction to overcoming adversity when his business partner conspired against him.Despite these challenges, Michael persevered and built a thriving business bringing in $5+ million dollars in revenue each year. Michael's experiences give him a unique mindset that he imparts to audiences to help them lead their best life personally and professionally. In what was the most EPIC interview we ever had or will ever have on this podcast, none other than the CREATOR of Married with Children himself, Michael G Moye, joined us in the nudie bar for 2 hours!  Even the great Alex himself came out of retirement to host this episode with the world's number one expert herself, Annabel!  We talked his career, character direction decisions, and asked a number questions that have never been asked before ANYWHERE:  Why was Al Bundy a shoe salesman?  Why did Al own a Dodge?  What were some character ideas that never made it onscreen?  All this and much more!   We even had a surprise guest appearance by Michael's wife Rose, who depicted the perfect wife Angie in the classic Season 8 episode Scared Single.     One thing we did learn about Michael is that he loves to read comments on YouTube that people write about the show, so please take a moment and leave a comment on that platform if you'd like.  We can't guarantee that he will answer anyone's comments, but we do know that he gets joy from hearing how his work continues to entertain and make people happy.   If you are a diehard fan of this show, you definitely need to tune in and listen, and perhaps listen to this interview twice!  We probably could have asked him about 100 more questions, but we wanted to be respectful of his time, and are extremely grateful that he was so kind and patient with answering all our questions.  So join us in the nudie bar, crack open a Girlie Girl beer, and listen in to the words of God himself, Michael G Moye!

Mary McCormack is one of today's boldest and most versatile actresses, continually challenging herself with roles that often defy Hollywood standards and bring to light the complex lives of ordinary women. The LA Times says, “McCormack has a kind of 20th century sass, a lively impertinence you find in classic Hollywood comedians like Barbara Stanwyck, Irene Dunne and Rosalind Russell.” She has shown her immense talent working in film, television and on stage, and has tackled roles ranging from slapstick comedy to intense drama. Tony-nominated for her role in Broadway's “Boeing Boeing” opposite Mark Rylance, she is also widely known for her four seasons as a regular cast member of “The West Wing" (two SAG Award nominations), as the lead of USA's critically acclaimed “In Plain Sight,” and for her role opposite Howard Stern in Private Parts.  McCormack's recent television work includes starring roles in the ABC series “The Kids Are Alright,” the AMC series “Loaded,” the NBC comedy series “Welcome To The Family” as well as arcs on such shows as HBO's “The Newsroom,” “Scandal” (ABC), Gus van Sant's award-winning miniseries “When We Rise” (ABC), “House of Lies” (Showtime) and the “Will & Grace” reboot (NBC). McCormack will also appear in the new Hulu Blumhouse anthology series “Treehouse.” McCormack can also be seen in the HBO Max feature Unpregnant. In this episode I chatted with Leslie Barnes and Joseph Mai, two scholars of film, about their new anthology The Cinema of Rithy Panh: Everything Has a Soul out with Rutgers University Press, 2021. As a child Rithy Panh survived the Khmer Rouge regime yet lost his immediate family during those awful years. He was fortunate enough to emigrate to France where he studied film and became a prolific director. Rithy Panh is now the most important film maker in Cambodia and in the Khmer diaspora. Committed to mentoring a new generation of Cambodian storytellers, he helped found the Bophana Audiovisual Resource Center which trains young Khmer film makers. The essays in The Cinema of Rithy Panh: Everything Has a Soul cover his diverse offerings but focus on the memory of the disaster of the Khmer Rouge years, as well as the 1976-1975 civil war and the Vietnamese occupation of the 1980s. Rithy Panh also engages the history of French colonialism and the explores social difficulties of workers caught in neo-liberal development projects. Leslie Barnes is a Senior Lecturer in French Studies in the School of Literature, Languages and Linguistics at Australian National University. Dr. Barnes has written Vietnam and the Colonial Condition of French Literature (University of Nebraska Press, 2014). Joseph Mai is an Associate Professor of French at Clemson University. Dr. Mai has published Robert Gay dig e on Guédiguian (Manchester University Press, 2017) and Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne (University of Illinois Press, 2010). With Imperial Nostalgia: How the British Conquered Themselves (Manchester UP, 2020) Peter Mitchell offers a “history of the present”. That is to say, it is not a narrative of how we got to where we are, but rather a sustained reflection on how history shapes and interacts with our current world. Mitchell also engages the uses history for contemporary political purposes. Mitchell argues that memories of empire are at the root almost every aspect of Britain's culture wars. From battles over statues to skirmishes within hallowed Oxbridge halls he argues that imperial nostalgia infects British politics. Dr. Mitchell earned his doctorate at Queen Mary, University of London in 2014. His dissertation was on the India Office records and the historiography of the early modern British Empire. In addition to Imperial Nostalgia, he is the co-author of Ruling the World: Freedom, Civilization and Liberalism in the Nineteenth Century British Empire with Alan Lester and Kate Boehme also with Cambridge University Press, 2021. Peter Mitchell is currently an Oral History and Public Engagement Officer with the University of Manchester working on “NHS: Voices of Covid-19” (funded by the AHRC and in partnership with the British Library Oral History Archive). Personally, I hate the This-Day-in-History genre. Far too often it is some Great-Man-History trope, representing a rather archaic way of thinking about history. However, I love the social media accounts of Working Class History. For the past few years, this anonymous collective have been using FaceBook, Twitter, and Instagram to tell the stories of strikes, anti-fascist resistance, and profiles of people who tried to create a better world. One of the things I love about the project is that it is not narrowly “class based”, in that World Class History engages feminism, LBGTQ+ liberation, and a range of liberation movements. If many of the vignettes are tragic as there are far too many martyrs for social justice, they are always inspirational. Working Class History reminds us that we are not alone in our diverse struggles against the hegemonic power of capital and the forces of reaction. Today I'm speaking with John of Working Class History, a member of this collective of activists. While none of the group are professional historians, they have published a book: Working Class History: Everyday Acts of Resistance and Rebellion with a forward by Noam Chomsky, published by PM Press in 2020. You can follow the work of this anonymous collective on all the major social media platforms. Michael G. Vann is a professor of world history at California State University, Sacramento.
