Today, we have a great episode with Andrew Chan from Atas Ventures.Surprise surprise…we're continuing the conversation about the climate tech vibe shift, climate tech 3.0, climate risk…whatever you want to call it. However, our conversation with Andrew Chan of Atas Ventures is a little bit different. Andrew has, from the very beginning, thought about climate investing from first principles, placing profitability and tangible impact at the core of his strategy. He refers to this next wave as "Climate 3.0," an evolution beyond traditional impact investing towards applied technologies like robotics, IoT, and advanced energy solutions. Our conversation today focuses on these themes, including how venture capital can meaningfully intersect with antiquated industries such as mining, agriculture, and manufacturing to drive both profits and genuine environmental outcomes. Andrew also shares why the venture capital playbook may need to evolve, emphasizing smarter portfolio construction, disciplined investing, and leveraging real-world experience to build lasting companies.Overall, it's an amazing episode and we're really excited to share this with you.Sidenote, we recorded this remotely while Andrew was traveling—he joined us from Bangor, Maine. It's baseball season! To commemorate this happy time of year, Ted made an audio recording of an essay that he wrote in 2014 for a collection called “The Who, the What, and the When” put together by Julia Rothman, Jenny Volvovski, and Matt LaMothe on the theme of historical sidekicks. Adam also contributed, as did Dan Kugler (underground legend for his work co-hosing the Slackers episode) and lots of other cool folks. In Ted's essay, he shares a vignette about Hiroshi Arakawa, the hitting coach of Japanese baseball legend Sadaharu Oh. Every short essay is accompanied by a staggeringly beautiful illustration. The mind-blowing illustration accompanying his essay is by the awesome Paul Windle.
Ashley and Peter sit down and discuss several topics. Everything from CHAT GPT's top 10, Meltzer and the Wrestling Observer names their worst gimmicks, Ricky Saints on Ricky Saints via Busted Open Radio and much more!SIDE NOTE...... As you know, Peter is a huge part of our little podcast. Trey and I look at Peter as a brother. Peter's family could certainly use all of our prayers. Peter's Dad is battling several health issues and has been in ICU for several weeks. I know that Peter would appreciate any and all prayers that you would send their way.
On this week's edition of the Flavors of Northwest Arkansas podcast, we're at Butterscotch in the Bentonville Square- you know the place- part bakery, part bar. We get into that, but first! FOOD NEWS! Applications are open for the Arkansas Food Hall of Fame... The original location of Slim Chickens is closed until summer, we think. We took video yesterday and, well, the original building is gone. Cobblestone Farms in Fayetteville is now reserving 2025 Spring/Summer CSA shares.... The 2nd annual NWA's shortest St. Patrick's Day parade has been announced. We have the particulars. Fayetteville's Spoon Fusion Korea Oh-K Dog on Dickson Street will temporarily close starting today and will re-open the 24th, according to their social media post. (*) Some sad news to report. Popular Fayetteville Food Truck Swag Banh Mi announced yesterday that they'll be closing down in 3 months. We'll hear why from a co-owner. Sam Gibson is the Director of Operations and Bar Manager of Butterscotch Bakery and Bar in the Bentonville Square. He's been there since he helped concept it with longtime friends and owners Sam and Larissa KcKenzie. He'll tell us why it's a bakery and bar, of course, a unique pairing.. Also, how did they wrangle prime real estate on the Bentonville square?!?! We'll hear that story as well. We'll talk about the bakery and what Sam wants to see on store shelves nation-wide from there, and he makes us some EXCEPTIONAL Butterscotch Old Fashions, I can say that it's the best Old Fashion that I've ever had... Sidenote- a bit of explicit language in this one, so plan accordingly. Thanks for listening- listen wherever you get your podcasts, and watch now on YouTube!
On this week's edition of the Flavors of Northwest Arkansas podcast, we head to Crystal Bridges where we talk to Chef Tim Ordway, Associate Director of Culinary Operations at Crystal Bridges & the Momentary... But before we get to Tim, we have food news! The Akira Ramen and Bowl food truck in Fayetteville is adding a brick and mortar location. The quickly popular Stonebreaker Hotel restaurant has new hours Sadly, we have 2 restaurant closures to talk about Chef Tim Ordway started his culinary career like so many- as a teenager working in fast food (Chik-Fil-A, actually), and knew pretty early-on that he wanted to work in food. But it wasn't just for the food aspect. Tim will explain. He credits his college education at Johnson & Wales for giving him a head start in the culinary industry, where he moved up quickly. He became a sous chef quickly in his early 20's at a restaurant where he met his wife. Chef Tim tells us why they moved from Charlotte to Northwest Arkansas. And there are many folks out there wondering why Crystal Bridges has a chef. They have several, and Chef Tim will tell you what all they're responsible for- it's a BIG list. For those that don't know, there are MANY culinary adventures are offered at Crystal Bridges, and that list is about to grow. ***Sidenote- if you haven't seen or heard, we've added video to Flavors and you can now watch on YouTube (just search for Flavors of Northwest Arkansas, or find the link on our Facebook or Instagram).

Happy Thanksgiving and welcome to another edition of the Flavors of Northwest Arkansas podcast. Appreciate you being here. Today, we catch up with Julie Sill. You know her from owning and operating a few legendary Dickson Street spots from back in the day, Common Grounds and the Hog Haus Brewery in Fayetteville. She's back and opening a new spot. More on that in a second. A few quick things first. If you're in need of a free Thanksgiving meal on Thursday, I've posted a list of places that are serving them on Instagram and Facebook. Just look for the Flavors of Northwest Arkansas. Secondly, some very important dates were announced yesterday (Tuesday, November 26th) for any and all beer nerds out there. The good folks at the Ozark Beer Company announced that they'll be releasing their vaunted BDCS during the last week of the year! For those that don't know, that is the Bourbon Double Cream Stout. People come in from out of state for this release. It's been rated World Class by Beer Advocate, it's and it's right here in our own back yard! We'll get a history lesson on it from Lacie Bray and Marty Shutter of Ozark Beer Company. Hear what you'll be able to get and when! By the way, if you want to hear the Ozark Beer podcast, scroll back to April 17th. It has some great stories! Also, head to Ozark Beer Company's social media to see the message from owners Lacie and Andy about the release. Now. Back to the Feral Pig... Julie Sill came to the UofA on a soccer scholarship. A knee injury ended her soccer career, and she needed to figure out what to do next. While she was doing that, she waited tables. She worked her way up. She found a correlation between the restaurant business and soccer, and that's what sucked her in. She'll tell you what that is. She worked her way into management and was soon running a restaurant for someone else. It didn't take long before she had her own restaurant at the age of 21! She'll tell that story and how she got Common Grounds off the ground. Later, she'd own and run the Hog Haus Brewery and wait until you hear the sweetheart deal that she got! Health would force her to get out of the business and head home to Maryland, but Fayetteville pulled her back, and now she's launching a new spot. Sidenote- there are a few spots in here where adult language is used, so beware! We'll hear from Julie Sill, next here on the Flavors of Northwest Arkansas.

This is a big one. We had a little gap in our schedule so Alan & Andrea decided to get all of their feelings about Elliott Smith down in podcast form. We talk about that voice, those melodies, that guitar playing, the time he and Louis theroux interviewed each other for Select Magazine, his creative partnership with Jon Brion and so much more. Sidenote: consider this a kind of reverse trigger warning: we don't talk about any details of Elliott Smith's death or engage in any speculation around it in this episode. In this powerful episode, I speak with my friend, Jason Mogus, a licensed counselor with the Center for Renewed Minds. Jason shares his harrowing journey through 14 years of addiction, the transformative power of faith, and the importance of addressing trauma to heal and find purpose. We talk about the role the big "C" church needs to play in mental health and addiction discussions. We also discuss the negativity around the word, "should" in recovery and in daily life. His story is a testament to resilience, hope, and the vital role of supportive relationships in recovery. Side Note: this episode was recorded back in June of 2022 Bio: Meet Dr. Jason Mogus. If you follow hoops, especially NCAA then you know the name! Episode 135 was fantastic as Mitch chops it up with former Texas Longhorn and Montverde basketball player, Marcus Carr. A Toronto native Marcus found himself following around his big bro @duanenotice at a super early age. Marcus often notes in this episode the importance of having Duane as an example to him. (Sidenote, Mitch slipped up and forgot to ask who Marcus most important people are, however we know Duane would be one for sure!) As a young, talented baller Marcus felt the right move for him was to transfer to Montverde in Florida so he could pursue a D1 path, but also to compete against the best night in and night out. Playing on a top ranked team with multiple future NBA players was an experience Marcus will never forget, in the end leading him to choose PITT for his freshman year. After a rocky season for the PITT athletic department Marcus felt he needed a change and decided to transfer to Minnesota under the guidance of Richard Pitino where he averaged 19ppg. The NCAA deemed Marcus ineligible due to transfer rules (Which are much different now), so he had to red shirt his first year before playing. It doesn't end there as Marcus decided one more time to transfer and head to the prestigious University of Texas to play of the Longhorns. Marcus ended up being a 5th year senior and had two great seasons at Texas, leading them to the NCAA tournament and averaging 16ppg in his senior year. The former Big 12 and Big 10 All-Team player is now in between pro contracts and looking to continue his career overseas. We loved this episode for a variety of reasons and you will too, make sure you tap in and Thank you Marcus for being with us! Singer-songwriter Leyla McCalla and her band (bassist Pete Olynciw, drummer Shawn Meyers and guitarist Nahum Zdybel) join us onboard the Cayamo cruise to go through their incredible, righteous and fun new record Sun Without Heat. It is a Leyla McCalla solo album but no solo artist is an island! Once we saw Leyla perform with her band, with whom she has collaborated for the past six years, we had to get the whole collaborative outfit in on the interview. The sounds on the album are inspired by Afrobeat, Haitian Music, folk music, indie music, Americana music, Brazilian tropicalismo, amongst others. Leyla calls it "a record that is playful and full of joy while holding the pain and tension of transformation." McCalla's liberatory politics find their way into the record, evidenced by the title which comes from a Frederick Douglass speech given six years before the Emancipation Proclamation. Leyla explores her cultural heritage while reflecting the African diaspora using elements of Afrofuturism. She's leaning into a concept that challenges women in music (particularly women of color) of how to free herself from labor that should not be hers and fighting for her right to be joyful in her creative expression. When asked about how these new songs feel through the lens of somatic experience, Leyla says the new music feels different and that she's let go of the idea of perfectionism as a single mom of three kids. A lot of the record was informed by different authors she's read recently like adrienne maree brown (Pleasure Activism) and Susan Raffo (Liberated To the Bone). Leyla's really changing the game in the Americana genre when it comes to incorporating the academic into truly bitchin' music. Sidenote: we really loved hanging out with this crew at sea on Cayamo. They had great vibes, good laughs and also very good outfits. lizzie even recruited Pete to play bass in an impromptu trio while on-board. One of the worst sights you can ever see in the garden is a plant that has been browsed by deer. (Sidenote: we don't love the gentle word “browsed” in this instance. A more appropriate term might be “obliterated.”) If the munching is particularly bad, that perennial, tree, or shrub becomes unrecognizable. And in many cases, this can mean instant death to your prized specimen. With deer pressure increasing from coast-to-coast, we decided it's time to highlight some of our favorite deer-resistant plants. Yes, we're from deer-ridden New England, but rest assured that we've included plants in this episode that will thrive from Texas to Michigan, and everywhere in between. Guest: Karen Chapman is a landscape designer in Duvall, Washington, and the author of Deer-Resistant Design: Fence Free Gardens that Thrive Despite the Deer. Danielle's Plants 'Childhood Sweetheart' hellebore (Helleborus 'Childhood Sweetheart', Zones 4-9) Winter daphne (Daphne odora, Zones 7-9) 'Bonfire' euphorbia (Euphorbia polychroma 'Bonfire', Zones 5-9) Sunshine Blue® blue mist shrub (Caryopteris incana 'Jason', 5-9) Carol's Plants Hiba arborvitae (Thujopsis dolobrata 'Variegata', Zones 5-8) ‘Victoria Blue' mealycup sage (Salvia farinacea 'Victoria Blue', Zones 8-10) Eastern sweetshrub, syn. Evolutionary psychologist, Doug Lisle, PhD and social scientist, Jen Howk, PhD discuss the following listener questions: 1. Can all personality types be equally happy if they apply diligent effort to worthwhile goals? ie all other things being equal, would a low conscientiousness individual be as happy as a high conscientiousness individual if they both applied their version of diligent effort and equally felt they hadn't left 'anything on the table' (despite those levels of effort and results being very different) 2. You have previously characterized men as "pair bonders or not." How has on-line dating changed the CB here for both sexes? 3. I am 51, happily married for 2 decades and have 1 child. We recently had a huge fight regarding whether we have a responsibility to help others. We have a friend who had a messy, complicated divorce and is struggling financially while still fighting her ex in court over child custody and business matters. He is a lying, unpredictable scam artist . As much as I feel sorry for our friend, I would like to keep a distance from this situation. Last time we saw her my husband offered to pay for a lawyer, and an accountant. While we live comfortably, we do not have the money this woman would need to become unentangled. When we got home I started yelling that my husband should not have made this offer because we really cannot afford it and I don't want her criminal ex husband knowing that we are helping her. While my cavewoman instinct was to protect my financial stability, I found it more effective to (over)emphasize the physical threat this could have on me since my husband travels a lot and her ex knows where we live. The fight escalated as my husband accused me of being selfish, uncharitable, and unwilling to help. I said that my time and energy go into taking care of my home and our family. We have already given this friend money and our time over the years. From an Evo-psych point of view, I understand that I feel a threat to my resources (financially and emotionally) as well as safety. My husband does not see this situation at all like I do. Shouldn't a cave-man have the instinct to primarily care for his family (only) and not spread their resources to another man's family?? Sidenote: while my son likes her kids, I would like to avoid any possible bad influence as one is already dabbling with marijuana. So, threat to offspring is another concern... I'm thrilled to share the latest episode of Core Connections with you! I had the pleasure of connecting with my dear friend and owner of vIVid Mobile IV, Amanda Kramme. Next week we'll be dropping an episode about ozempic® that I can't wait for you to hear. I have been going to vIVid Mobile IV for a little over a year and have been experiencing the amazing and rejuvenating benefits on my body and mind. Amanda describes IV therapy as akin to the familiar concept of heading to the hospital or urgent care for a rejuvenating banana bag when you're feeling under the weather. That process is now being brought into clinics and homes. She highlights the absorption rate of nutrients with IV therapy is at nearly 100% compared to the supplements you would grab at your local drugstore with a mere 5-30% absorption rate (depending on gut functionality). This means that you are going to experience the full benefits of IV therapy without the hassle of urgent care or the ER. Sidenote: you'll DEFINITELY want to listen in to discover the secrets of NAD (hailed as the fountain of youth by Amanda) and its transformative effects on the body at a cellular level. She delves into what might hinder you from fully embracing the benefits of IV therapy and shares her recommendations to prepare your body for maximum results. This is a tool that I wish I had access to in 2018 when I was recovering from mold toxicity, so knew I had to open this conversation with the hopes of helping you heal your body and feel your absolute best. If any of this information regarding IV therapy resonates with you or piques your interest, be sure to tune in to this episode for tips and advice on supporting your body and enhancing your overall well-being. Key Moments: [03:17] An explanation of IV therapy and how it can revolutionize your health journey. [04:45] Uncovering the benefits of IV therapy that will boost the function of your body and mind. [07:43] The power of Vitamin C for immune function to ensure your body is prepared for prevention or recovery. [12:41] How IV therapy can combat sluggish cellular function caused by toxicity. [16:28] Understanding NAD and uncovering why opting for it in IV form might just be the key to unlocking a rejuvenated, youthful version of yourself. [21:56] My personal experiences of taking NAD and the effects I noticed with my body. [25:09] Amanda's powerful message for those considering IV therapy. I'm thrilled to share the latest episode of the Jasmine Star Show with you! Not only did I have the pleasure of sitting down with my dear friend and fellow entrepreneur, Lori Harder, I also had the privilege of introducing her as my co-host in a series of upcoming episodes. Over the coming weeks, we'll be dropping new episodes with several other powerhouse female entrepreneurs that I can't wait for you to hear.Lori and I first met at a mastermind event hosted by Lewis Howes. Lori, with her kindness and brilliance, quickly became a close friend and a source of inspiration for me.She emphasizes the importance of building a network and being in rooms that stretch you. One of the best pieces of advice she gives when you're nervous about networking and possibly feeling intimidated by the room you're in is: “It's about how you can serve others, not what you can get from them.” With this mindset shift, you can completely reframe the interactions you'll have and walk away with so much more.Lori candidly shared her struggles of starting a company from the ground-up during the height of the pandemic. Not only does she walk through her journey to raise over $2 million (having NEVER fund raised prior), she shows us how to embrace doing it messy and not letting lack of experience or knowledge stop you from taking action.Sidenote: you'll DEFINITELY want to listen in to learn about Lori's “Freedom Phrases,” which are the BEST way to handle answering questions that you don't know the answer to!She shares her lowest of low moments along her journey when things seemed to be failing left and right and she had to make “the best worst decision.”She felt immense pressure to not disappoint her investors and was fearful of disappointing them, but knew she couldn't continue on the same path and had to make BIG changes. If you find yourself in a similar situation to Lori being paralyzed by the fear of disappointing others after they've shown belief and support in you, be sure to tune in to this episode for tips and encouragement on moving forward and making hard decisions.Key Moments6:14 - Three questions to help you figure out what's next for you and your business.10:41 - Tips for networking in a room of people that intimidate you with their knowledge and achievements.13:33 - Lori's simple hack when you don't know the answer to questions you're asked.15:00 - How Lori successfully raised $1 million in a year by specifically targeting women investors and hand-picking strategic guests for her podcast, leading to referrals and further investments.27:57 - Lori's moment of realization and how she decided to pivot her business. For complete show notes for this episode, visit: jasminestar.com/podcast/episode380
Edward Geyman, founder & CEO of Laneta Tequila, joins us today to explain why his Tequila embodies the philosophy of its name (Laneta means "truth" in Spanish). Joey "Baby Kangaroo" Waknine and Manny "From the Bronx" Blanco are also in studio today, sharing their truths (as well as some laughs). What makes Laneta Tequila Special: Edward Geyman is a fourth generation glassmaker from Ukraine, who used their acumen to design one of the most beautiful bottles of Tequila out there. Look for the flower of life on the bottom of the bottle! Laneta, or "the truth," signifies their mission to create a spirit greater than the category, and for its enjoyers to discover their own truths. The mission for Laneta is to bring friends and family together. Sidenote: it works beautifully in an espresso martini! It's spoooooky season. Eddin goes all out with his costume (wait for YouTube reveal) where he taps into Rory's childhood trauma. Meanwhile, Rory and Mal unintentionally dress in each other's respective colors. Staying on scary news, Dwight Howard is wildin'. We break down this crazy story. Staying on celebrity relationships we discuss Britney Spears calling out Justin Timberlake for blackfishing. Who had the better black era, Justin Bieber or Justin Timberlake? Speaking of posers, Michael Irvin's son made it from gated community to the hood. Sidenote, Tyga is underrated and Pitbull loves climate change awareness. Then we discuss the list of places women said they can't go on a first date and compare that to the list men created. It's time for voicemails with a special call in from music legends from Houston and Massachusetts. Tune in as the guys discuss all of this + more! The Last of Us on HBO is a sci-fi horror based on a fungal pandemic that turns people into mushroom like zombies. So how much of this show is scientifically accurate? Is it a good depiction of fungi and how they work? Is the Last Of Us good as a TV Show compared to a video game. Or is it doing a disservice to mycologists everywhere. Gregory Brown and Mitch Moffit talk all things the science of the last of us, and it will get heated based on the gay episode! lol7:47 - What Did We Learn This WeekChocolate Science and lubrication11:01 - Are Rich People Smarter?STUDYTIME: The Last Of Us20:00This episode is sponsored by/brought to you by BetterHelp. We're home!....well kind of. Eddin is out sick so we recorded this episode from WTF Studios (the house we built) The guys cover their Thanksgiving and reflect on moments with family, while Julian was “alone”. Somehow this leads to a JUICE pyramid scheme conversation. We then pay respect to the legend Hovain. Rick Ross and Meek Mill unite in Philly, which leads to a discussion about Meek's career. Speaking of career's Chris Brown was canceled by the AMA's which spirals into an intense debate about censorship in our culture. Currently, Balenciaga is also on the chopping block (rightfully so). Sidenote: record labels fudge numbers (boom conspiracy solved) Listen in as the guys discuss all of this and more +
