Join us to celebrate the achievements of Prof. Cathy Elliott. Recorded one day after her inaugural lecture, marking a significant milestone in her distinguished career, Cathy talks about her wild approach to education.Cathy is one of those rare educators who always strives to focus less on grades and more on inspiring her pupils. She has spearheaded ungrading campaigns at UCL, as well as inclusive curriculums and student-led projects on inclusivity, belonging, political philosophy and international relations. She is a co-director of UCL Centre for the Pedagogy of Politics, a co-convenor of the Political Studies Association Teaching and Learning Network, and Vice-Dean Education for UCL Faculty of Social and Historical Sciences. Cathy has made history as our department's first academic on the teaching track to be promoted to Professor. This in itself reflects Cathy's thoughts on education - if we remove some of the boundaries and change some of the criteria , wonderful things might happen (inc. it might be easier for teaching track academics to progress to prof)!Mentioned in this episode:Cathy Elliott. Send us a textThis is the third and final episode in a 3-part mini series about exploring creative education, both as a noun and a verb; new ways of thinking about assessments, grading and ungrading with 3 brilliant educators who work and teach in the spaces of communication, design, creativity, art and art therapy. In this episode, you'll hear from Art Therapist and Educator, Patricia Ki, who brings a rich understanding of therapeutic practice and educational pedagogy informed by her practice to this conversation. She discusses how traditional grading systems are in misalignment with the communities of care art therapists are aiming to foster. Patricia dives into the concepts of individualism and competition that lie at the centre of a colonial education system, as well as the connection between capitalism and traditional grading systems, all of which are in direct opposition to the goal of collective care. I'm all about interesting projects with interesting people! My guest today is Dr. Susan Blum. Susan Blum is Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Notre Dame. She is the author of I Love Learning; I Hate School and My Word!, as well as the editor of Ungrading. Her new book, Schoolishness: Alienated Education, and the Quest for Authentic, Joyful Learning is now out on Cornell University Press. It catalogs in great detail the characteristics of a “schoolish” education, that is, school as a self-contained institution with its own logic, grammar, and rules. One that, ultimately, sets students up for difficult re-entry into the rest of their lives in an unschoolish world. Susan draws upon examples of unschoolish learning from around the world and makes a powerful case for a necessary anthropological perspective that makes the familiar strange and the strange familiar.“If we don't try, nothing will change,” she writes, “It's hard. Hell, it's probably impossible. Schoolishness is probably here to stay, but maybe not all of its elements are inevitable. Entrenched, yes. But inevitable? I don't think so.”Editor's Note: Susan would like to add a quick correction that her current DuoLingo streak is over 1,100 not 11,000. :)Susan Blum's WebsiteWorks mentioned this episode:Susan Hrach - Minding Bodies: How Physical Space, Sensation, and Movement Affect LearningDavid Lancy - The Anthropology of ChildhoodEdwin Hutchins - Cognition in the Wild Hosted on Acast. In this special summer shorts episode, we revisit conversations from the past year to help you gear up for the upcoming semester. Join us as we explore practical strategies and innovative approaches shared by our expert guests.  From episode 13, JoAnn Edmond and Jenn Rose kick things off by emphasizing the importance of a learner-centered syllabus. "Creating tools like a syllabus, which can serve as a blueprint for your course, is crucial," they explain. By utilizing templates and resources from the Center for Instructional Innovation, faculty can design syllabi that not only guide course structure but also foster a community-focused learning environment. This approach, they argue, can directly support institutional goals like improving student retention.  We explore the concept of Ungrading from episode 17 with Drs. Candis Bond and Trent Kays. They describe Ungrading as an "assessment and evaluation approach that favors process over traditional grading," focusing on formative assessment and continuous feedback. By shifting away from the conventional A-F scale, this method aims to enhance intrinsic motivation and promote a deeper engagement with the learning process. "It's a mindset, a philosophy," they assert, encouraging educators to create environments where students can focus on learning rather than merely aiming for a grade.  Finally, from episode 15, Dr. David Joyner discusses the transformative potential of AI in education. He highlights the need to adapt assessments to maintain their effectiveness in the face of new AI tools like ChatGPT. He advises, "We must make certain changes to keep our assessments reliable and effective demonstrations of student understanding." Dr. Joyner also sees AI as a means to elevate educational outcomes, enabling students to tackle more ambitious projects and achieve deeper understanding. His insights are complemented by his publication "A Teacher's Guide to Conversational AI" and a professional certificate program available on edX.  Explore these ideas and more, visit augusta.edu/innovation for full episodes and additional resources.

Welcome to the 100th episode of Overthrowing Education!  On today's episode, I have the awesome privilege of chatting with 5 inspiring high school students – Pauline, Drizzle, Ella, Fahmi, and Katie and their equally inspiring teacher, Stacie Oliver. We mostly talk undgrading. Obviously, this is a topic I am passionate about, and I noticed in the Edu Twittersphere a teacher, Stacie, who was posting about her journey with her students about ungrading. I was impressed not only by Stacie, but also with her students whose work and reflections she sometimes posted. I realized that with all of my episodes, and there are lots of good ones, about going gradeless and ungrading, they were mostly from the teacher's point of view. So, I reached out to Stacie to see if I could have her and her students on to tell us about their adventures in ungrading. And also play The 5-Minute Game Show, of course! I'd love to do this for 100 more episodes, at least and continue bringing passionate, creative and inspiring voices of educators and students, so please subscribe if you haven't yet, and tell friends and colleagues to as well. And if you find yourself wanting an OE mug, t-shirt or tote bag here's the Swag Shop. Check out John Atkinson's clever and funny cartoons including the ones that I used for The 5-Minute Game Show. As I get ready for my 100th episode celebration, I thought it would be great to look back at my very first episode from August of 2019. I featured educator of excellence Jesse Stommel and we discussed Ungrading (of course!).  My show was so different in the beginning, and I've streamlined it quite a bit since my earlier episodes. I originally had a feature called In the Trenches, and my guest on this episode was Leora Smith.   I also had something I called Tirades, Tips and Tools. I don't think this 2-minute segment lasted more than 2-3 episodes. It was a good idea, but kind of redundant.   I initiated my first fauxmercial which is called Grades-Be-Gone and of course, Jesse and I played the first The 5-Minute Game Show based on Two Truths and a Lie. Even though the show has grown quite a bit 98 episodes after this one, I think that for the most part, it holds up. What do you think?

#106 Apparently there is a growing concept of taking away traditional grading systems in schools and colleges, and replacing them with ungrading. It seems that the idea is to engage the student in feedback generating self-reflection on their progress through courses. I don't know much about ungrading, but from what I do know, it doesn't seem viable. Join me in this episode as I explain my thoughts, and feel free to share yours too!

This semester, Cesar and I have been working hard together as doctoral students at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley on our topic of study: ungrading. For those unfamiliar with the term, ungrading is a form of evaluation in which there are no grades or strict metrics; instead, feedback is open-ended and ongoing. It's something we both feel passionate about, inspired to share with others, and determined to explore further. We've been diving deep into this concept - discussing its possibilities and implications - and using our own experience to develop frameworks for educators who might be interested in trying it out. Ungrading has the potential to revolutionize education if given enough attention, which is why we're so excited to be studying it! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/myedtechlife/support

Josh Luckens interviews Dr. Susan Blum, who shares how she uses “ungrading” principles and practices to reinvigorate her role as a college professor and empower her students to be lifelong learners.Dr. Blum is a professor of anthropology at The University of Notre Dame and the author of nine books, including her 2016 publication "I Love Learning; I Hate School: An Anthropology of College,” and her 2020 instant classic “Ungrading: Why Rating Students Undermines Learning (and What to Do Instead),” which she both edited and contributed to alongside higher education experts from across the world.Ungrading is a process of pedagogical inquiry that calls conventional assessment practices into question and continually searches for instructional strategies that work better to promote deep engagement and lasting learning.Dr. Blum shares a constellation of teaching practices applicable to a variety of disciplines that de-center grading and re-center genuine feedback and student growth. In her words: “Students in my classes have shifted their focus from getting good grades to meaningful and authentic learning.”Additional resources:Transcript: View as Word Doc or PDFTLC blog post: Asking the Big Questions in Learning DesignTeaching What You Don't Know by Therese HustonCarl Wieman Science Education InitiativeSyllabus example that employs grading while integrating ungrading principles (from Professor Mark Sample of Davidson University)(August, 2022)

She is also Professor of Anthropology, Fellow, Kellogg Institute for International Studies, Fellow, Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies, Fellow, Institute for Educational Initiatives, Fellow, Eck Institute for Global Health all at the The University of Notre Dame. In this episode, Susan and I explore the connections between “Ungrading” and Universal Design for Learning principles, especially focussing on how “Ungrading” engages students, reduces threats and distractions (yes, grades are distractions to learning) and fosters community. Ungrading can also provide multiple options for action and expression, so we will be covering quite a number of the UDL guidelines today.    At one point in our conversation, you may hear a difference in sound quality on my audio as we had to revert to our backup audio for the last half of the interview.   Near the end of the episode, Susan mentions the book Minding Bodies: How Physical Space, sensation and movement affect learning by Susan Hrach, and indeed I had just interviewed Susan Hrach the day before our recorded conversation.
