This week we're taking a break from the evolving civic situation in the U.S. to shine light on global stories in education that you may have missed.Nepal's National Teachers' Strike Lifted: Teachers and Students in Nepal are resuming classes more than a month after teachers began demonstrating across the country in protests that included clashes with police over issues of teacher pay, sick leave, grading systems, and other issues. Negotiators had faced setbacks after several rounds of contentious negotiations with the country's teacher unions. Educators have been turning up the pressure on the Nepalese government to enact legislation directed by the country's 2015 Constitution that transfers control of the nation's schools to regional and local authorities.“AI tools are going to do to students' critical thinking skills what social media has done to their attentive skills.”AI in Global Classrooms: National Experiments in China and Estonia: Prompted by emerging policy statements on AI use in U.S. classrooms, we take a look at how other countries are faring as the pressure to adopt AI tools and lessons increases with the ubiquity of AI products. In China, AI in schools is almost old news; we'll take a look at their aggressive stance on implementing the technology and compare it to that of Estonia, which has recently announced a partnership with OpenAI for the use of a custom version of ChatGPT for education within its public secondary schools.Ashlie Crosson Named National Teacher of the Year: The Council of Chief State School Officers has announced the 2025 recipient of the National Teacher of the Year award. This year's winner is Ashlie Crosson, an English teacher and media & journalism advisor at Mifflin County High School in Pennsylvania. Congrats, Ashlie!Discussion QuestionsHigh stakes make schools a precarious place to “move fast and break things,” but there are sometimes costs to falling behind. What is the appropriate pace of educational change? When we worry about being “left behind” in the race to adopt artificial intelligence tools in our schools, have we considered the net impact of AI, or are we focused on individual benefits and risks? As we adopt more AI tools, do we risk learning becoming “artificial”?What does it mean to “personalize” the educational experience? For a full list of episode sources and resources, visit our website and click on Archives.

House and Senate members are back in session this week to continue negotiations on a state budget for the fiscal year that begins July first. The owners of Restorative Roots Recovery want to continue operating recovery houses in northeastern Pennsylvania, but they're concerned about the Trump administration's federal funding cuts. Lydia McFarlane from our friends at WVIA reports from the only licensed male recovery houses in Luzerne County. The Eagles visited the White House Monday to celebrate the team’s Super Bowl victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. Speculation about who would and wouldn’t attend the celebration had been going since the date was announced last month. Nick Kariuki with WHYY's Billy Penn was in Washington D.C. for the event. “And I think that's what reading is… It's a personal interpretation of the story, and it may not be the same as somebody else's. That's the whole idea of a good teacher. There should be different interpretations, and sometimes a student will come up with something that I never thought of.” —Sharon M. Draper  Give a story to twenty kids, and you might get twenty different takeaways. Some will catch the details you didn't even notice. Others will pull out meaning that wasn't intentionally placed, but rings true all the same. Sharon M. Draper writes for everyone and fiercely advocates for students' right to read for themselves.Sharon knows the capacity of a book to transport and transform kids; she was the kid who maxed out her library card every Saturday at the Cleveland Public Library. She then became the teacher who read aloud to even the most skeptical students, and the writer whose bestselling novel "Out of My Mind," which was adapted into a film for Disney+ and remains requisite reading for many middle schoolers year after year. A two-time Coretta Scott King Award winner, Sharon is the author of "Stella by Starlight," "Blended," "Tears of a Tiger," and many, many more.In this episode, "Good Luck, They're Yours: Sharon Draper on Giving Students Room to Read," Sharon discusses what it means to trust readers, how her students helped guide her first book, and seeing her stories banned in classrooms. We also talk about church music, spiked lemonade, and how she ended up with a special library card that gave her access to the library's adult section, even as a child. When we asked Sharon to come up with a reading challenge, she was reluctant to give us a list of must-reads. Maybe that's not surprising, given her past frustrations with inflexible required reading lists. In true teacher fashion, she flipped the assignment and gave us a lesson plan. This week's Beanstack featured Librarian is William Schaller, the middle school librarian at Hoffman Middle School in Houston, Texas, for the past seven years! White House officials say 139,000 unauthorized immigrants have been deported in President Trump's first 100 days. A new CBS News poll shows 56% of Americans approve of Mr. Trump's plan to deport immigrants who came to the U.S. illegally, a key promise from the president. However, his overall handling of immigration has slipped to 49% approval. In President Trump's first 100 days, tariffs have been at the center of his economic policy. Goods made in the U.S. make up 10% of the country's total gross domestic product, which the president hopes to change. CBS News' Weijia Jiang has more on how businesses are being affected. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem told "CBS Mornings" co-host Tony Dokoupil that she's "very confident" the people arrested for stealing her purse are undocumented migrants. "From the information that has been shared with me so far in the investigation," Noem said, "these are career criminals." Speaking at a Michigan air base today, President Trump is expected to ease tariffs on automakers just weeks after imposing them, as tensions rise with Canada's newly elected liberal government. On Monday, prosecutors in Karen Read's retrial called a forensic cellphone expert who testified about when John O'Keefe's phone likely stopped working. The expert also testified that O'Keefe, who was Read's police officer boyfriend, likely never made it inside a home for a party, potentially hurting the defense's argument. Only on "CBS Mornings," English teacher Ashlie Crosson of Mifflin County High School in Pennsylvania is honored as the 2025 National Teacher of the Year for her impact on students and journalism program leadership. This week I have the opportunity to sit down with TLC 2025 keynote speaker Juliana Urtubey, the 2021 National Teacher of the Year, to explore what it really means to create schools where joy and justice aren't just ideas — they're lived experiences.Juliana's story is compelling. As a bilingual, first-generation immigrant, her journey into education has been deeply personal, and that lived experience shows up in every part of her practice.Throughout our conversation, Juliana talks about how her background has shaped not only how she teaches, but why she teaches. She emphasizes the central role of community and reflection — two elements we know are foundational for authentic learning and growth. Her "Choice and Just Framework" is all about reimagining the classroom as a space for collaboration rather than compliance, where students are seen, heard, and valued. What I found especially powerful is Juliana's unwavering belief that classrooms can be places of both rigor and joy — that justice and belonging aren't add-ons, but essential. If you're an educator looking to build inclusive, affirming environments where every student's strengths are honored, this conversation offers not just inspiration, but real insights you can act on.Thank you for being a part of our community. Feedback: We love hearing from you! Join host Juliana Urtubey, NBCT, on this episode of 3Ps in a Pod as she connects with Sarah Brown Wessling, NBCT, an Iowa-grown educator who is as passionate as ever about what she does and finding ways to make deep connections. In this second episode of our series “More Than Mentoring,” Sarah explains how she collapses the space between mentor and teacher in order to be in a collaborative relationship with her mentees.  Sarah Brown Wessling is a high school English teacher and the director of the National Teacher of the Year program, which gives her the opportunity to work with the state teachers of the year. She is a fierce advocate for the profession and a mentor who embodies curiosity and kindness. Sarah pushes us to explore our teaching identity and to examine how we mentor teachers to ensure we aren't telling teachers how to establish a teaching identity but supporting them in discovering their own teaching identity through reflection. She also explains why and how she crafts invitations for learning and how that impacts trust, autonomy, respect, and community.  Sarah and Juliana talk deeply about developing relationships and how limiting our idea of mentoring to specifically timed meetings can limit those relationships. Mentors, whether working with students or adults, should consider establishing connection points that allow for rolling and continuous conversations. Sarah coaches us to be the most interested person in the room and ask questions that will support growth. She shares that questions are like “pulleys” and, when we are genuinely curious, questions pull us closer.  Don't forget that Sarah reminds us that listening is leadership and a gift. Often those we are listening to have the answer in themselves and just need the encouraging nudge of hearing their words back to them to know they are seen and that they are moving in the right direction. Dr. Henriksen shares valuable insights from her research and personal experience about nurturing creativity in both educational settings and daily life."Creativity is something that's fundamental and core to who we are as people. But we often do have to kind of fight with ourselves to make sure we're leaving some time for that."Understanding CreativityDr. Henriksen challenges the common misconception that creativity is limited to artistic pursuits or special talents. She emphasizes that creativity is accessible to everyone: "If you look across the breadth of most creativity studies, it's really something that we all have access to in different ways as human beings." Creativity in EducationDr. Henriksen discusses the tension between standardized testing requirements and fostering creativity in schools. She shares insights from her study of National Teacher of the Year award winners who successfully integrated creative approaches while achieving strong academic results.Nurturing Creativity in ChildrenFor parents looking to support creativity, Dr. Henriksen recommends:* Recognizing that children are naturally creative* Supporting their existing interests and creative passions* Praising the creative process rather than just the outcome* Providing diverse experiences and encouraging safe risk-taking* Fostering a growth mindset about mistakes and learningThe Mindfulness-Creativity ConnectionDr. Henriksen shares how mindfulness can enhance creativity, noting, "The ability to kind of suspend judgment... that ability of reframing or looking at things with fresh eyes is a really key part of creativity."Practical Takeaways* Make time for creative activities, even if they don't serve an obvious productive purpose* Practice mindful awareness to support creative thinking and overall well-being* View mistakes as learning opportunities rather than failures* Consider creativity as essential to human nature rather than just a luxury* Be mindful of where you direct your attention in our distraction-filled worldInterested in purchasing Explaining Creativity: The Science of Human Innovation? A recent survey found that nearly a quarter of middle school students and a third of high school students feel they don't belong. This conversation explores the concept of belonging uncertainty and its impact on students' well-being and academic success. The guests discuss the importance of creating a sense of belonging in schools and offer strategies for addressing this issue. They emphasize the need for adults to have conversations about identity, race, gender, and sexual orientation with students, and to validate their experiences. Small interventions, such as assigning buddies to new students and using value-affirmation activities, can also help reduce belonging uncertainty.
