Host Jenny engages with Lia Haberman, a creator economy expert, to unpack the role of influencer marketing in higher education. Fresh off a visit to the White House, Lia shares insights into the evolution of the creator economy, how influencers shape audience engagement, and actionable strategies for integrating influencer marketing into university communications.Key TakeawaysInfluencer Marketing vs. Creator Economy: Understand the difference between influencers promoting brands and the larger ecosystem enabling creators to thrive. Why Higher Ed Needs Influencers: Institutions can leverage influencers, including students, alumni, and faculty, to amplify messages authentically.Building Relationships with Influencers: Collaborate with influencers through budget-friendly approaches like campus events, content partnerships, or passion-driven projects.Start Small and Local: Many influencers with niche audiences, such as professors or student athletes, can create meaningful connections without hefty price tags.Stay Current: Keeping up with newsletters, books, and conferences helps higher ed marketers navigate the rapidly evolving influencer landscape. What Is Influencer Marketing?Lia Haberman defines influencer marketing as a brand's collaboration with influencers to promote its products or services to their audiences. She explains that this is a subset of the broader creator economy, which encompasses the platforms, tools, and businesses supporting influencers. While influencer marketing has evolved from simply posting product ads, its role remains vital in creating relatable and impactful connections. For higher ed, influencer marketing means leveraging students, alumni, and faculty to act as relatable amplifiers for the institution's messaging. Haberman notes that while traditional marketing can feel impersonal, influencers offer a genuine voice, fostering trust and engagement. Why Higher Ed Should Embrace InfluencersHigher education is notoriously slow to adopt new trends, but Lia emphasizes the benefits of integrating influencer marketing into university strategies:Reach Gen Z and Gen Alpha: These demographics trust influencers and prefer authentic, peer-led communication over institutional messaging.Evolve Beyond Celebrities: Influencers today include professionals, experts, and niche creators, making the strategy accessible to universities with diverse audiences.Build Relatable Content: Influencers excel at creating compelling content that resonates with their audience, often outperforming traditional advertising.Lia encourages institutions to think locally, identifying influencers within their community, such as star student-athletes, faculty with niche audiences, or alumni with strong online presences.Finding and Collaborating with InfluencersWhen it comes to sourcing influencers, Lia suggests the following:Social Listening: Observe who your students engage with online. Tools can help, but even manual research—like monitoring social media interactions—yields insights.Personal Outreach: Sliding into DMs with genuine compliments or proposals can open doors for collaboration.Creative Compensation: Not all partnerships require big budgets. Consider offering speaking opportunities, awards, or aligning with the influencer's passions to add value. For example, a university might work with a prominent alumni influencer to create content showcasing campus life. The collaboration doesn't have to break the bank—highlighting shared values or giving access to unique resources can be enough.Influencer Marketing on a BudgetHigher ed marketers often face budget constraints, but Lia stresses that great partnerships are still possible. Micro-influencers or creators with smaller, engaged followings can be affordable and impactful. Additionally, repurposing influencer-created content for institutional social media channels can stretch limited resources.Institutions can also look internally for influencers. Professors with expertise, athletes, or even enthusiastic students can act as authentic voices for the university. Lia highlights examples like Stephen Nedorazek, an Olympian and Penn State student whose collaboration with the university has amplified its reach.Staying Informed in a Rapidly Evolving SpaceLia recommends staying current through newsletters, books, and conferences. For beginners, she suggests resources like her own newsletter, In Case You Missed It, as well as other thought leaders like Rachel Karten and Lindsay Gamble. Regularly attending events like VidCon or VidSummit can also provide inspiration and insights into the latest trends.Guest Name: Lia Haberman, Creator Economy Expert | Advisor | EducatorGuest Socials:LinkedInXInstagramBlueskyTikTok Guest Bio: Lia Haberman is a distinguished Creator Economy expert and author of the best selling ICYMI newsletter — a must read for anyone in the social marketing space. She's been tapped for her social media and creator insights by brands such as Google, Robert Half and AT&T, she was invited to attend the first ever Creator Economy Conference at the White House in 2024, and has led live creator workshops for clients such as YouTubers Colin and Samir, Macy's and Riot Games. She teaches social media and influencer marketing at UCLA Extension; has created custom lectures for visiting students from Zhejiang University, SKEMA Business School and ESIC University; and was asked to speak to a delegation as part of the U.S. Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program at UCLA.

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Four years later, as the country prepares for President-elect Trump's second inauguration this month, Kara talks to Haberman about initial actions he'll likely take on immigration, tariffs and TikTok; which of his controversial cabinet picks could pass muster in Congress; and whether tech billionaire Elon Musk will have an all-access pass to the West Wing. The second Trump administration hasn't started, but it's already proving chaotic, disturbing, and downright bewildering. (Not unlike the first!) Trump's picks for key staff and cabinet positions display a discordant, if not altogether surprising, mix of ideologies, experience, and scandalous baggage. (Indeed, one of his picks, Matt Gaetz for Attorney General, withdrew from consideration between the time we recorded our interview and when we recorded the intro.)For this episode, we're focused on Trump's national security team, which is shaping up to be divided against itself: neoconservatives like Marco Rubio (State) alongside quasi-isolationists like Tulsi Gabbard (Director of National Intelligence) alongside bellicose TV personalities like Pete Hegseth (Defense). To make sense of it all, we're joined by Curt Mills, a longtime foreign policy reporter and executive director of The American Conservative.  A semi-enemy, Curt hails from the paleoconservative school of foreign affairs, which prioritizes realism and restraint. (That is to say, he's not thrilled about Rubio...) Based on Trump's appointments thus far, we ask Curt to assess, from his perspective, the relative strength of various factions of the Trump coalition: Will Trump listen to the warmongers in his midst? Will he side with the America Firsters? Or will he ignore everyone and just make some deals? Listen to find out.  Further Reading: Curt Mills, "What a Trump Cabinet Might Look Like," The American Conservative, Oct 18, 2024.— "What Trump Could Do in Foreign Policy Might Surprise the World," NYTimes, May 13, 2024.Patrick Smith & Peter Alexander, "Police report details alleged sexual assault by Trump's defense pick Pete Hegseth," NBC News, Nov 21, 2024. Baker, Haberman, Swan, "Gaetz's withdrawal follows revelations in a sex-trafficking inquiry." This week on Ring of Fire! According to “Trump whisperer” Maggie Haberman, Donald Trump isn't harboring any delusions about Matt Gaetz's chances of being confirmed as Attorney General, and she claims that he's admitted in private that the odds are below 50% right now. But he's not giving up, according to Haberman, and he is on the phone with Republican senators constantly begging them to get Gaetz through. A federal judge appointed by Donald Trump has blocked an overtime pay rule from the Biden Administration that would have guaranteed overtime pay for more than 4 million salaried workers across the country – and millions more would have been eligible next year. The rule has been stalled as employers were trying to prevent having to pay workers for their time, and now millions of people will be forced to work longer hours without any overtime. Members of the Trump transition team are currently discussing plans with Republican members of Congress to expand the 2017 tax cut package that mostly went to wealthy Americans. In order to pay for this extension, they are discussing cuts to social safety net programs like Medicaid and SNAP benefits. To put that another way – They are going to take money AWAY from poor people so that they can give themselves and their donors a fat tax break. Marjorie Taylor Greene is bitter about the election for some reason, and she's now at the point of saying that Democratic governors are possibly committing “treason” by enacting plans to protect their states from Trump's policies. She said that she's still open to the idea of a “national divorce,” which she claims would be horrible for Blue States. The stats don't back that up, and Red States would be the ones to suffer the most. All that, and much more, on this week's Ring of Fire Podcast!

This week I published an audio essay about what I think is unique about Donald Trump as a personality and political figure and the dangers he poses if he gets a second term in the White House. But I wanted to go deeper on this topic with someone who knows him much better than I do.Maggie Haberman is a senior political correspondent for The New York Times and has traced his evolution over the decades in her 2022 book, “Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and the Breaking of America.”In this conversation, we discuss what Haberman agreed and disagreed with in my essay, the forces that shaped Trump's ideas of politics and power as a real estate developer in New York City, what she thinks he wants from a second term (including his desire for revenge), how his inner circle has changed since his time in office, what he might do if he loses and more.Note: This conversation was taped before Trump's former chief of staff John Kelly went on the record saying that Trump meets the definition of a fascist and confirming that the former president made admiring statements about Hitler.Mentioned:“What's Wrong With Donald Trump?” by Ezra Klein“Trump's Speeches, Increasingly Angry and Rambling, Reignite the Question of Age” by Peter Baker and Dylan Freedman“Trump Leans On Creative Bookkeeping to Keep Up in Cash Race” by Shane Goldmacher and Maggie HabermanBook Recommendations:Kamala's Way by Dan MorainRomney by McKay CoppinsAmerican Carnage by Tim AlbertaThoughts? Bill Walton would often state that he was the luckiest man in the world. Every time he would say that with his infectious energy I'd smile, and I bet you would too. He looked at life through an incredible lens and one that was optimistic and oftentimes inspiring.Heading into my 16th year of putting a headset on as a broadcaster, I too feel like Bill often did. Over the course of time, I've stood next to Steve Physioc, Kevin Calabro and for the better part of the last decade, Ted Robinson. How lucky have I been to have been given a PhD by those three in the school of broadcasting!? Let alone having Lewis Johnson, Samantha Ponder, Jill Savage, Cindy Brunson, Ashley Adamson and more on the sideline. It's been an absolute joy and it's an understatement to share how each of those gifted professionals have impacted millions of sports fans, and myself. This week brings a new season with a new crew, a new logo, and a new network. I'll be in a familiar setting - overlooking Autzen Stadium in prime time on Saturday night and next to me will be a guy I've known for the last 12 years, Guy Haberman. What's so special about Guy is that he truly loves sports broadcasting, having recorded himself calling games as a child. On Saturday night, he will also be living a dream, perched a few hundred feet above a majestic field amid a standing-room-only crowd. Additionally, Guy is a selfless friend, loving husband and extremely talented broadcaster. While the viewer usually only see's the TV crew on air, what makes a unit special is the time off the airwaves. Guy and I have called a few games together in our careers and we've made Week 1 games our speciality in places like Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City and others. But the best part has always been the week leading up to it – the countless calls, the meals while driving to and from the stadium and even the final stop at a FedEx to print out our materials. It's a dream, all of it. And this fall I'm so thankful to have Guy as the next guy I get to learn from and celebrate the game with.In advance of our first game together on the Big Ten Network I had to have him on the Y-Option podcast, presented by our founding partner 76, to learn about his origin story and how he explores the craft of play-by-play.Hope you enjoy our conversation as Guy, Rhett Lewis and myself are so looking forward to bringing you college football this fall.Enjoy Week 1 and what should be another magical ride alongside the sport we all love. For more insights around college football through the lens of the West Coast, go to y-option.comThis episode was executive produced by Jim Thornby and edited by Victor Ren.This podcast is a Best Coast Media production. SERIES 2 EPISODE 177: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: A lawyer yelling "you're a liar" at a witness does not make him a liar, despite what Anderson Cooper says. The storyline before the Trump Trial began was: If Michael Cohen keeps his cool when Todd Blanche screams at him, he'll prevail. He did it, and yet the networks rushed to ignore it. Prosecutors have already said they'll only need about an hour of re-direct of Cohen next Monday, meaning that's all the time they expect to require to polish him back up. They are still winning - plus there is still the wild card that in his perpetual over-confidence Trump may testify. And yet that's not where I start because sometimes the most important story and the most interesting one are not the same thing. The primary sidebar takeaway from Cohen's testimony was based on a poorly worded tweet that the author, Ron Filipkowski, deleted. “Cohen testified that his main media contacts to get positive stories run about Trump were Maggie Haberman, Katy Tur, and Chris Cuomo." Except Cohen DIDN'T say that. He was asked if he had good relationships with reporters. Haberman? "Yes," he replied. Tur? "Yes." Cuomo? "Yes." I am thus in the position of defending - in part - the transactional Haberman, my appalling ex, and the ridiculous Cuomo.  Having said that, they are all imperiled because of what Cohen DID say.  Plus we have a really great punchline to the day in the courtroom in which a would-be Trump Insurrectionist learned that loyalty to him is a one-way street, even if the only thing you wanted was a wave. B-Block (29:43) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Exactly what American journalism needed: Chris Cillizza has authored a "Mission Statement." It is even more hilariously self-unaware than any actual article he's ever written. C-Block (51:44) FRIDAYS WITH THURBER: A lot in this episode about the media, so let's hear from Thurber and how they tried to turn him into a radio star and instead turned him into a nervous wreck: "How To Relax While Broadcasting."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

SERIES 2 EPISODE 175: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44): Dumboesque Senator Tommy Tuberville has gone on the Newsmax propaganda channel and revealed the obvious: the Speaker, the Senators, Congressmen, (one) Governor and one political jock-sniffer (Ramaswamy) who've stunt-attended Trump's New York trial are there to help Trump evade Judge Merchan's Gag Order. Merchan must bring them into court, put them under oath, and get their testimony as to what Trump demanded that Mike Johnson, Cory Mills, J.D. Vance, Tuberville, Doug Burgum, and Ramaswamy do to help him get around the Judge's order. Then find Trump in contempt because the gag order ALSO precludes him from telling others to attack witnesses or the judge's family for him. Also, thanks for Ramaswamy for the funniest Freudian slip of the trial, in which he accidentally called Trump a "sham politician." MEANWHILE: A day ago I asked The New York Times to give us a "Walter Cronkite" moment and instead it gave us a Judith Miller Moment. Introduced into evidence yesterday? Texts from Michael Cohen to Maggie Haberman from 2018 reading “Big boss just approved my responding to complaint and statement. Please start writing and I will call you soon." What she wrote presented Cohen's (and Trump's) lies about Stormy Daniels and the payoffs as facts. She wrote it the same day and came back and wrote it again the next day. There is a difference between facts (Cohen texted me) and the truth (WHAT Cohen texted me isn't true and I didn't bother to try to find out or even caveat the lies - and Haberman and The Times have to go. As they fired Judith Miller for disseminating George W. Bush's "Saddam WMD" lies so they must fire Haberman - the same Haberman who two days ago dismissed Cohen's testimony as "hearsay" and who is still writing Times leads on this story TODAY. B-BLOCK (40:47) WHY The Times needs to give us a Walter Cronkite Moment. C-BLOCK (64:39) GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

WE NEED A "WALTER CRONKITE MOMENT" FROM THE NEW YORK TIMES - 5.14.24

Countdown with Keith Olbermann

Play Episode Listen Later May 14, 2024 38:03 Transcription Available

SERIES 2 EPISODE 174: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: We need a Walter Cronkite moment from The New York Times. The New York Times needs, one day – one day soon, one day now – to devote the entirety of the front page – to a headline, and an editorial, signed by the publisher Sulzberger and the editor Kahn and the key columnists and correspondents – headlined “TRUMP IMPERILS DEMOCRACY” and sub-headlined “YOUR LIFE AT STAKE.” We need a Walter Cronkite moment from The New York Times and when Trump went to a Philadelphia area seaside resort called Wildwood, drew maybe 10,000 cultists, lied and had the Republican mayor lie and say it was 80,000, complained that immigrant students don't speak English and immediately afterwards said something like “Borden-in-riv-iv,” said something else like “carry doubt-ite-by-rite,”claimed the president between Ford and Reagan was named Jimmy Connors, said the Chinese were preparing to invade Beijing (their own capital), insisted the entire country was grateful that he killed Roe-V-Wade, thanked – by name - the Supreme Court justices who gutted it, suddenly invoked the fictional cannibal character Hannibal Lecter, seemed to praise him, claimed the character was dead, and got the name of the movie wrong, and then insisted all immigrants are Hannibal Lecter – and all of that was after he was introduced by some immigrant who called him “President CHUMP"... the New York Times story, by a sixth-stringer named Michael Gold, mentioned… none of that. This was what Editor Joe Kahn's writer told consumers of the most influential news organization in America, quote: “After a long and often tense week in his criminal trial in Manhattan… Trump… took part in a time-honored ritual enjoyed by countless New Yorkers in need of a break: He went to the shore.” Oh ho ho, how clever. The Times instead lets Maggie Haberman dismiss as “hearsay” Michael Cohen's first-hand recounting of what Trump told him about ‘not being on the market for long' if Melania dumped him and if Haberman doesn't know the legal definition of “hearsay” get rid of her. And the Times made room for an op-ed bashing Joe Biden by Mark Penn, a dishonest right wing pollster who has been posing as a Democrat for at least 20 years. In Court: “Michael Cohen calmly describes Trump's hush money instructions,” reads the headline in The Washington Post. The SUB-headline quotes Trump: “Just do it.” That's what the prosecution needed out of Cohen. And it needs it again out of him today. AND whenever the cross-examination begins. It needs him making more self-abnegating jokes about ‘angry, even for me.' It needs him testifying as he did yesterday: that he was there in Trump Tower, days before Trump was sworn in as president, with Allan Weisselberg, reviewing a handwritten document plan to repay Cohen for the Stormy Daniels hush money and how they would hide it. And that Trump said “smart individuals” had told him, Trump, to pay the $130,000. And that Trump told him he knew if the Daniels story got out it would be a disaster for the CAMPAIGN. And it needs him producing one outstandingly sleazy quote from Trump per day on the stand, like when Cohen asked Trump about the impact on his wife MELANIA if the story got out and Trump said “don't worry. How long do you think I'll be on the market for? Not long.” B-Block (22:54) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: California Assembly Bill 2265 and what it can do to save dogs - and save shelters the horrible cost of killing them. (24:27) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: An update on the back story to the "This Is SportsCenter" commercial I did with soccer's Alexi Lalas, in which I reprised John Belushi's moment in "Animal House" in which he smashes the guitar against the wall. The update? The DVD with the outtakes literally fell off a shelf here yesterday. Enjoy. C-Block (40:35) GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Matthew Haag of The New York Times writes: “Defense lawyers for Donald J. The lawyer, Keith Davidson, spent hours on the stand describing how he received the $130,000 payment for the woman, Stormy Daniels, from Mr. Trump's longtime fixer, Michael D. Cohen, and the mad scramble that ensued when the story got out anyway. The cross-examination quickly turned hostile: Mr. Trump's lawyers sought to cast Mr. Davidson as a shakedown artist who took aim at celebrities including Tila Tequila and Charlie Sheen, while he fought back by suggesting they were using loaded language like ‘extortion' to stigmatize legitimate settlements.” During his opening monologue Rich notes that during testimony, Davidson said he did not consider the payments from Trump to be “hush money.” You can read more here: https://www.nytimes.com/live/2024/05/02/nyregion/trump-hush-money-trial/trump-trial-keith-davidson-testimony?smid=url-share 3:30pm- Does anyone else think former Trump attorney Michael Cohen simply sounds bitter because he wasn't selected for a prestigious position in the Trump Administration in 2016? 3:40pm- Drum Roll Please: Rich will be at Mulligan's Shore Bar in Wildwood on Saturday May 11th from 5pm to 7pm for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's big campaign rally in Wildwood, NJ! 4:05pm- Listeners call-in and offer their opinions on the Trump “hush money” trial—but Rich gets sidetracked when he starts receiving compliments! 4:30pm- Former President Donald Trump spoke with the press briefly after court concluded on Thursday. Instead, the rule creates a pocket veto for fossil fuels and public works while rubber-stamping green projects. Permitting reform for we, but not thee… The Administration's new rule ignores the law by making it easy to kill projects that progressives oppose… Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer promised West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin he'd take up permitting reform in return for supporting the Inflation Reduction Act. The Manhattan DA has a meaningless business-records misdemeanor wrapped within a theory about an alleged Trump conspiracy to defraud the voters by denying them disparaging information before the election and obscuring, after the fact, the payments that were used to do so. Bragg is accusing Trump, in effect, of stealing the election. If this is the standard by which we judge elections, we need to go back and conclude that Bill Clinton wasn't elected legitimately in 1992, either. The Arkansas governor's political operation was, in part, an elaborate conspiracy to keep women who alleged to have had affairs with Clinton quiet. Hillary Clinton was an active participant in the schemes. And so, by Bragg's logic, this Democratic power couple—dominant in the party for a decade or more and still honored today—comprises election thieves.” You can read the full article here: https://www.nationalreview.com/2024/04/remember-when-bill-clinton-stole-the-1992-election/

Sports announcers and 49ers Youtuber Guy Haberman had vocal cord surgery and now sounds like Patty + Selma. I find his current predicament fascinating. He insists the subject of announcer voice issues isn't interesting. We start talking 49ers around the 52 minute mark, for people who are into that sort of thing. Topics include:* What does a vocal cord surgery do for a broadcaster?* Which sports announcers qualify for Top 5 “All Pipes” Team* Do New York announcers have the best accent for the job? Do Midwesterners have the worst?* Why did the elite duo of Guy + John Middlekauff break up? * Is Brandon Aiyuk going to be traded? * My crazy contrarian NFL takes* Does the NFL have a good understanding of which positions actually matter?* Who should the Niners draft?* How good is the talent around Brock Purdy? Better than what the Lions have around Goff? * Why paying your QB big money is no death sentence * Oh, and subscribe today!House of Strauss is a reader-supported publication. Countdown with Keith Olbermann
TRUMP JUST STARTED THREATENING THE SUPREME COURT - 1.4.24

EPISODE 2 SERIES 100: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) I misunderstood the first salvo. I completely missed the second. But when the third one exploded yesterday, it finally dawned on me. Trump - using milquetoast seemingly benign surrogates, has already begun to threaten the Supreme Court and especially his three appointees that they had better find in his favor in the "presidential immunity" and 14th Amendment Disqualification cases - or else. Alina Habba delivered a message on Fox yesterday clearly designed for Justices Barrett, Gorsuch, and Kavanaugh, warning them not to try "so hard to look neutral (and) make the wrong call" and that the only "American" verdicts would be those in Trump's favor. This echoed what Maggie Haberman reported last week (and Habba was nice enough to reveal she and Haberman are friends). And it puts in a new light Christina Bobb's boast Tuesday that it doesn't matter even if Trump IS guilty of insurrection: the people will decide who's president. It is muted, but it is a threat of violence and MORE insurrection, being delivered against the Supreme Court. B-Block (16:48) IN SPORTS: ESPN and ABC and Disney have quite the conundrum. Its new supposed savior of the sports network, Pat McAfee, failed to retract, or even apologize for, a statement by football's Aaron Rodgers implying that Jimmy Kimmel was on the Jeffrey Epstein "list." Kimmel already threatened to sue - and that was before the fake screenshots started, and before McAfee said that since Rodgers was only "talking shit" it's not like what he said mattered. Me? I think Kimmel should sue but even better, he should do what Chick Hearn did when he was fed up with his rookie sidekick Al Michaels on the broadcasts of the 1967-68 Los Angeles Lakers. I'll explain. (23:55) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Oh good, we have a SECOND extramarital sex scandal inside the "Moms For Liberty" pro-fascist group. Congressman Troy Nehls reveals the Republicans don't give a damn about whether or not there are a million migrants crossing the border, or none. It's a stunt. And are we sure C-SPAN meant to promote its coverage of the "End of Fist Session" of Congress? C-Block (29:30) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: It is now nearly 17 years since a veteran Senator from Delaware asked me to lunch to pick my brain on how when I spoke angrily I seemed righteously indignant, but when he spoke angrily he seemed...angry. I think he's mastered it now - and we need him to be righteously indignant AND angry in the 300 days ahead.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
