Since 1996, one Sunday in November has been designated the "International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church." It is a significant remembrance for us. David Barrett, formerly of the Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board, is one of the foremost authorities on the state of Christianity in the world today. In his book Our Globe and How to Reach It, he says that more Christians have been killed in the 20th century than in the 19 previous centuries combined. Exact statistics are hard to determine, but continuing into the 21st century, worldwide, even on the low end of estimates, tens of thousands of Christians are killed every year for the Christian faith . . . in places like Pakistan, Sudan, North Korea, China, Indonesia, and Iran. We are commanded in the Bible to "Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body" (Heb 13:3). There are great benefits in considering, with both mind and heart, that the church elsewhere is suffering. First, it makes us bolder to share our faith with others (Phil 1:14). Second, it broadens our perspective concerning what God is doing in our world and how He is doing it. Third, it sobers us about our own faith, reminding us that we are in a deadly war and must live disciplined lives (2 Tim 1:8; 2:3). SCRIPTURE: 1 Corinthians 3:3b-9, Colossians 4:7-18“There is one church in Annapolis–one church in the world–and we are a door among other doors into it. If we're going to actually be a contributing part of the entire church's success, we have to start thinking radically about what it means to be a part of the whole. We have to lean in to what makes this door distinctive and effective in its particular and unique context...and we have to lean out over to the side to make sure that the doors next to ours are able to succeed, that they are able to deeply and truly believe they aren't on their own.”DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:What have your experiences been with rivalries–either real or perceived–between churches? Where do you think rivalries come from?What would happen to tensions or “rivalries” in your own life if you were able to let go of the desire to be the “hero” in the story?Why is it important for churches to “talk to each other”? Jesus on Politics Matthew 25:31-40 31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. 34 Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.' 37 Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? 38 And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? 39 And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?' 40 And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.' 1. Matthew 7:13, 21 (ESV) **Politics in the Nation and the Church:** - Many assume the worst of others' motives. - Many fight (seemingly at all costs) for their cause or candidate. - Many assume the worst if their cause/candidate doesn't win. - Conversely, many assume all is good if their cause or candidate does win. - Many have cast off charity, kindness, and the benefit of the doubt. - Many (perhaps most) have lost sight of the main thing — Jesus and His kingdom. 2. Jesus' kingdom politics is others-oriented (25:35-40). 3. In Jesus' kingdom politics, Jesus is King (25:31).

Did Christ intend that this power should be exercised by the apostles alone? No, Christ intended that this power should be exercised also by their successors, the bishops of the Church. (Acts 1:24-25) 147. Did Christ give special power in His Church to any one of the apostles? Christ gave special power in His Church to Saint Peter by making him the head of the apostles and the chief teacher and ruler of the entire Church. (Acts 2:14) 148. Did Christ intend that the special power of chief teacher and ruler of the entire Church should be exercised by Saint Peter alone? No. not exercised by Saint Peter alone, but Christ intended that this power should be passed down to Peter’s successor, the Pope, the Bishop of Rome, who is the Vicar of Christ on earth and the visible head of the Church. 149. Who assist the bishops in the care of souls? The priests, especially parish priests, assist the bishops in the care of souls. (Acts 14:22) 150. Who are the laity of the Church? The laity of the Church are all its members who do not belong to the clerical or to the religious state. 151. How can the laity help the Church in her care of souls? By leading lives that will reflect credit on the Church, and by cooperating with their bishops and priests, especially through Catholic Action. (I Peter 2:12) 151a. What is Catholic Action? Catholic Action is the active participation of the laity in the the Church under the guidance of the hierarchy. 151b. In what ways can the laity participate actively in the apostolate of the Church?
