Back when I was flying a great deal, people would often ask me where I lived, and I would frequently answer with the name of the airline I flew on the most. Now, when I hear of airplane crashes and disasters, it kind of hits me personally. I think it does anybody who has been a frequent flyer. Whether you're a flyer or not, though, there are images of certain airline tragedies that kind of forever imprint on your memory. One of those for me was the ValuJet crash in the everglades. It's been a number of years now, but the entire plane and all its passengers just vanished in the swamp. But to one man, there's another image related to that crash. According to one news report, he used his I.D. to help his friend purchase his ticket for that flight. That friend didn't have sufficient I.D. with him at the time. And the man who bought the ticket watched his friend and all those other passengers boarding. The man who bought the ticket simply said, "I cannot forget their faces." And then he was quoted as saying, "If only there had been some signs of what was going to happen. If only I had known to warn them." I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Getting Passengers Off the Fatal Flight." Now, if anyone had a warning of what would have happened to that fatal flight, you know they would have done everything possible to keep the passengers from going. But seldom do we have such a warning. When it comes to when the people around us will go into eternity, we have all the signs, all the warning we need. God tells us in 2 Thessalonians 1:8-9, "Those who do not obey the gospel of the Lord Jesus will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord." Without the Savior, no one we know is going to be able to get to heaven. That means hell. Now, our word for today from the Word of God, Proverbs 24:11 - "Rescue those being led away to death. Hold back those staggering toward slaughter. If you say, 'But we knew nothing about this,' does not He who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not He who guards your life know it? Will He not repay each person according to what he has done?" See, if you know people on a flight that leads to death, your responsibility is obvious. Rescue them! But if you look around at most of Jesus' followers today, we're not in a rescue mode. There's little sense of the life-or-death urgency about introducing those around us to Jesus. We need to ask, "Do we really believe the people we know will be lost forever if they don't know Christ? Do we really believe they're spiritually dying?" Someone suggested to me recently, they called Christians practical Universalists. Now, in theological circles, a Universalist basically is someone who believes that everyone will eventually make it with Christ or not. Practical Universalists probably don't believe that, they believe, as the Bible teaches, that people must have the Savior to go to heaven; they just don't act like it. They act like the people who think that folks are going to make it without Jesus. Yet the Bible says, "There is no other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved." Without the man who died to pay for our sins, we'll have to pay for them. What about the people you live with, you live close to, the people you work with, you go to school with? You see some of those faces? The Bible clearly teaches that sin has an eternal death penalty and that Jesus and only Jesus died to pay that death penalty. And that we will pay that death penalty for our sins if we don't accept the payment Jesus made because of His love for us. The people around you are on a flight that ends in eternal death and you and I have the information that can save them. Pretty clear, our responsibility, huh? "Rescue those who are being led away to death." Begin to pray daily by name with life-or-death passion for the people around you. Ask God for the words and the opportunity to tell them about your Jesus. You know what God's Word says, and He's the final word. You know where the Christ-less flight is headed. You can see their faces. Be the one who gets them off that fatal flight and onto the one that will take them to eternal life.

fWotD Episode 2650: Existence Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Tuesday, 6 August 2024 is Existence.Existence is the state of having being or reality in contrast to nonexistence and nonbeing. Existence is often contrasted with essence: the essence of an entity is its essential features or qualities, which can be understood even if one does not know whether the entity exists.Ontology is the philosophical discipline studying the nature and types of existence. Singular existence is the existence of individual entities while general existence refers to the existence of concepts or universals. Entities present in space and time have concrete existence in contrast to abstract entities, like numbers and sets. Other distinctions are between possible, contingent, and necessary existence and between physical and mental existence. The common view is that an entity either exists or not with nothing in between, but some philosophers say that there are degrees of existence, meaning that some entities exist to a higher degree than others. The orthodox position in ontology is that existence is a second-order property or a property of properties. For example, to say that lions exist means that the property of being a lion is possessed by an entity. A different view states that existence is a first-order property or a property of individuals. This means existence is similar to other properties of individuals, like color and shape. Alexius Meinong and his followers accept this idea and say that not all individuals have this property; they state that there are some individuals, such as Santa Claus, that do not exist. Universalists reject this view; they see existence as a universal property of every individual. The concept of existence has been discussed throughout the history of philosophy and already played a role in ancient philosophy, including Presocratic philosophy in Ancient Greece, Hindu and Buddhist philosophy in Ancient India, and Daoist philosophy in ancient China. It is relevant to fields such as logic, mathematics, epistemology, philosophy of mind, philosophy of language, and existentialism. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:52 UTC on Tuesday, 6 August 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Existence on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Ruth.
Historically, Universalists, believing humans are good but flawed, railed against the Calvinists, who asserted humans are inherently sinful and depraved. Dr. King told us, “That within the best of us, there is some evil, and within the worst of us, there is some good.” Perhaps it might be more useful to focus on the choices we have.

In our previous episode, we talked about what it means for "every man" to be a liar, and how the one who uses that scripture against others (which is out of context) must include themselves in the "every man." We also examined what it means for God to be justified, and how God is shown to be righteous. Today, we will look at the usage of the phrase "God forbid" in Paul's epistles. Some seem to be under the impression that, just because we are under grace, we are not given commands to live by, or instructions concerning the things we say about God. "God forbid" means exactly what it says. God still forbids some things, even during the dispensation of Grace. And if we pay close attention, we will see how serious these "God forbids" are. Paul is trying his best to keep us from blaspheming - just because a sin is paid for and forgiven, doesn't mean that it's "ok" to do it. We will go further into explaining how the unrighteousness of man actually proves the righteousness of God. And Paul will make his point, in a nutshell, concerning what he has been talking about since the very beginning of this letter. ●Is "God forbid" just a suggestion about "how to think" on certain things? ●What does Paul say that he has been forbidden to glory in? ●How does the unrighteousness of man commend the righteousness of God? ●Is Paul admitting to telling a lie in this passage, or is he referencing slanderous reports? ●What is Paul's point in chapter 3, verse 9? IN THIS SERIES: ●We will see who Paul was talking to and why. ●Why Paul's mention of the "day of wrath" in Romans 2 makes perfect sense in the context. ●We examine who is being spoken about regarding the "remission of sins." ●Look at some things that Paul struggled with in the flesh concerning the law and why he's even talking about the law in the first place. ●Identify where the false doctrine of Sonship Edification puts its roots in Romans 8. ●Look at some verses that Universalists use to support their false "salvation of all" claim. ●Find out what the "faith of Christ" is and what it isn't. ●We will see whether or not Gentiles are "grafted into" that Olive Tree in Chapter 11. ●Go over what we are to be "fully persuaded in our own minds" about when we go through our instructions for living life after salvation. ●Learn more about how and why Gentiles were never under the law. ●Look at how prayer works and how it doesn't work today. ●Look at today's practical application compared to how Paul addresses the Jews in the flesh in this letter. ●Go over the fact that no one outside of Paul's "dispensation of grace" enjoyed eternal security, nor were they saved by grace through faith ALONE, without works. ●Find out the who, how, and why of "marking" others. ●And we'll tie it all up with the Revelation of the Mystery which was kept secret since the world began.

Summary In this conversation, Tim and Keith discuss the topic of universal reconciliation and respond to the claim that it is not a biblical or Christian perspective. They explore various themes, including the historical context of universalism, the views of early church fathers, and the nature of God. They also address the theological critiques of universalism, such as the connection between conditionalism and universalism. In this conversation, Tim and Keith discuss the concept of universal reconciliation and respond to critiques of the belief. They explore the idea of having the mind of Christ and the importance of humility. They address theological and philosophical critiques of universalism, including the claim that it originated from Gnosticism and Kabbalah. They also discuss the problem of grace and how universalists interpret biblical passages differently. The conversation highlights the different hermeneutic approaches used by universalists and the challenges of interpreting Paul's writings. They conclude by addressing verses that seem to support eternal punishment. Takeaways Universalism is not a radical or heretical view, but rather a valid and biblical perspective within the Christian tradition. The early church fathers, including Origen, held views of universal reconciliation, and the label of heresy was not applied until much later. The connection between conditionalism and universalism is not a slippery slope, and each view has its own distinct theological arguments. The theological critiques of universalism can be addressed through a deeper understanding of the nature and character of God. Having the mind of Christ involves humility and the willingness to lower oneself for the sake of others. The claim that universalism originated from Gnosticism and Kabbalah is unfounded and lacks evidence. The problem of grace in universalism is a misunderstanding; extending grace to everyone does not diminish its value. Universalists interpret biblical passages differently, often using apocalyptic hyperbole and spiritual readings. Paul's writings can be interpreted in different ways, but the concept of universal reconciliation is supported by various passages. The message was delivered on Sunday, January 7, 2024, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION "I think a hero is anyone who is intent on making this a better world for all people." — Maya Angelou January 7th I launch our January Sunday Sermon Series called "The Justice League." Superheroes (such as Superman and Batman and Captain America) were invented in the 1930s and 1940s by Jewish immigrants to the USA in response to a time of immense antisemitism around the world. Today, as antisemitism and Islamophobia are on the rise, it is fascinating to recount the origins and impetus for the creation of these superheroes. Almost every superhero's origin story includes experiences of profound trauma and/or rejection. The 21st Century has seen the emergence of the first Muslim-American superheroes. Most notably, is the character Ms. Marvel, a Pakistani-American teenager from New Jersey. Come hear about some of the amazing history and what we can take from it to fuel our own work to make the world a more just and inclusive place. The message was delivered on Sunday, December 24, 2023, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Randy Lewis, Assistant Minister. DESCRIPTION Here we go again. It's Christmas time, and many churches will preach about the promised Messiah, the Child in the manger who is to become the Prince of Peace. In the Christian tradition, we are told that some 2,000 years ago, the angelic choir proclaimed “peace on earth and goodwill to all men.” And yet, year after year, again and again, peace remains elusive and short-lived at best, and goodwill is often overshadowed by self-interest and greed. Join us for the Christmas Eve morning service that will delve into the heart of the matter. Beyond the symbolic birth, we'll explore meaningful actions to foster lasting peace and goodwill. It's time to move beyond relying on miracles or babies to fix our problems. Let's embrace a message that resonates in our actions and is a catalyst for positive change! The message was delivered on Sunday, December 10, 2023, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Randy Lewis, Assistant Minister. DESCRIPTION In the grand scheme of global challenges, wars, terrorism, and humanitarian, economic, and ecological crises, participating in local school board elections may seem insignificant. But as renowned anthropologist Margaret Mead once wisely noted, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." This sentiment underscores the profound connection between seemingly small actions and the potential for significant change. Drawing inspiration from Mead's words, Sunday's message explores the idea that hope is not just a passive emotion but an active force, a tangible product of intentional, collective actions that contribute to the building of a better, more hopeful world for ourselves and future generations. The message was delivered on Sunday, November 12, 2023, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION Stories of nations and groups are passed down between the generations and sometimes create seemingly endless conflicts, like we are seeing in Israel and Gaza. In Oklahoma and across the USA, schools and governments are in conflict about how to tell our state and country's history. How do groups rewrite such stories to come up with a common history that is both true and makes room for a positive future for all? Perhaps more importantly, what is it about the stories you tell yourself, about yourself and others, that keeps you in perpetual conflicts? Often such stories contain our ideal images of what a person should be. We have conceptions of what a person must be like to be lovable, to be successful, to be powerful or to be good. We also have stories about the ideal spouse or partner or the ideal child and family. These are images we pick up that often get in the way of our seeing the true beauty and holiness in the people we love - and even in ourselves .These stories we have about ourselves and others are "real" and powerful in that they shape our lives and relationships. When we realize they're destructive - we need to go back and re-author our stories. What is the story you tell yourself about why you do what you do. Is it time to rewrite any parts of your life story? Should you be seeking a ceasefire to end the casualties created by the stories you tell? The message was delivered on Sunday, October 29, 2023, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION In the book: “Breaking Bread with the Dead” Alan Jacobs is concerned about children watching only stuff that is marketed to and for them, that is “fired like an arrow to their amygdala.” Stuff that was manufactured for their immediate effortless consumption. Rather than pushing them out of their comfort zone, experiencing some ambiguity and thematic density. He also writes about the importance for all of us of engaging the ideas, art and music of people from previous generations as a way of living with less anxiety in the present. One of the major ways that attending All Souls adds value to our lives is by regularly introducing us to ideas and music from the past in ways that improve our lives in the present. This Sunday we will recognize 71 new members who have joined All Souls over the last few months. The following quote from Jacobs' book introduces my theme for Sunday and one of the reasons so many people are drawn to All Souls in these times. "…information overload—a sense that we are always receiving more sheer data than we know how to evaluate—and a more general feeling of social acceleration—the perception that the world is not only changing but changing faster and faster. What those closely related experiences tend to require from us is a rough-and-ready kind of informational triage." Triage—it's a French word meaning to separate and sort—is what nurses and doctors on the battlefield do: during and after a battle, as wounded soldiers flow in, the limited resources of a medical unit are sorely tested. The medical staff must learn to make instantaneous judgments: this person needs treatment now, that one can wait a little while, a third one will have to wait longer, preferably somewhere other than the medical tent. To the wounded soldiers, this system will often seem peremptory and harsh, uncompassionate, and perhaps even cruel; but it's absolutely necessary for the nurses and doctors to be ruthlessly brisk. They cannot afford for one soldier to die while they're comforting one whose injuries don't threaten his life. Navigating daily life in the internet age is a lot like doing battlefield triage. Given that what cultural critic Matthew Crawford calls the “attentional commons” is constantly noisy—there are days we can't even put gas in our cars without being assaulted by advertisements blared at ear-rattling volume—we also learn to be ruthless in deciding how to deploy our attention. We only have so much of it, and often the decision of whether or not to “pay” it must be made in an instant. To avoid madness we must learn to reject appeals to our time, and reject them without hesitation or pity. The message was delivered on Sunday, October 15, 2023, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION Recently, I came across the term "Fundamental Neighborliness." It is said to be a barometer of the soul and an indicator of the attitude of one's heart. Generosity is one of life's greatest joys to be able to share what we have to help someone else to have an opportunity to grow or experience life's possibilities. Even in those times when we feel lacking, being able to share something can bring us alive. Most of us struggle in some ways with generosity. Some are too generous, and some are not generous enough. How can we balance our generosity so that it is a central component of our life's satisfaction and a true expression of our love? The reflection was delivered on Sunday, October 8, 2023, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Randy Lewis, Assistant Minister. DESCRIPTION Gazing at the profound mystery of life, we stand in this present moment, where the everlasting and the transient meet. Our days on this earthly journey are but fleeting shadows, casting a reminder of the impermanence of existence. We realize that time is indeed a precious gift. In the absence of certainty and clarity, how are we to find meaning, hope, and perseverance for our journey? How do we redeem our days and make them count? The message was delivered on Sunday, October 1, 2023, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION People who love the book “To Kill a Mocking Bird” are often shocked and disoriented if they read Harper Lee's second book, “Go Set a Watchman,” when they discover that Atticus Finch ends up a member of the Ku Klux Klan. We don't expect that one of the most noble heroes of American literature has a shadow side. Even more surprising is when they finish the second book and they still like Atticus despite his imperfections. We live in a time of “cancel culture.” Increasingly it seems people assume there is a purity or perfection that people must attain. Today one misstatement or misdeed or old photograph can cause a person to lose their job or get kicked off social media. We want our heroes to be flawless and increasingly we expect that in each other. Yet, people are complex and multidimensional and have the ability to evolve and change. The first week of October is Banned Books Week in America, and Harper Lee's books are being banned across the country. However, I believe that together, they offer us an important lesson in being human. Atticus' daughter Scout and son Jem came of age in “To Kill a Mockingbird,” and perhaps the rest of us have a chance to come of age, in a way, from her second book. In accepting other people's imperfections, we may be able to begin to accept our own. Or perhaps it's the other way around. “Let the one without sin among you, cast the first stone…” John 8:7 SUBSCRIBE TO AUDIO PODCAST: WATCH THIS MESSAGE ON YOUTUBE: SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL: GIVE A DONATION TO HELP US SPREAD THIS LOVE BEYOND BELIEF: or text LOVEBB to 73256 LET'S CONNECT: Facebook: Instagram: All Souls Church Website:
