The Story of the B-52s: Neon Side of Town (Palgrave Macmillan, 2023) is the first critical history of one of the most legendary and influential bands in American popular music. Locating The B-52s in the intellectual climate of their hometown of Athens, GA and following the band from New York's downtown scene in the early 1980s to their upcoming farewell tour, the book argues that The B-52s are much more significant political and musical influences on American society than their reputation as a silly party band suggests, and that their ongoing commitment to values including cooperation, mutual support, and using disruptive fun as a form of social change are an antidote to the neoliberalization sweeping both Athens and the rest of the Western world.  For example, the book shows how the band synthesized influences from the modern artists displayed at the University of Georgia art museum, early queer activism on campus in the 1970s, and their experiences as queer people living through the AIDS crisis to create music that continues to be artistically and politically influential today. The authors are active members of the Athens, GA music scene, and the book includes original interviews with a range of number close to the band. Scott Creney is author of the work of creative nonfiction Dear Al-Qaeda: Letters to the World's Most Notorious Terror Organization (Black Ocean). Interview with William The Conqueror

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing William The Conqueror over Zoom video! Acclaimed UK band William The Conqueror released their new album Maverick Thinker on March 5th through Chrysalis Records. The first single, "Quiet Life," is a charming, slow-building lament that broadens out like a rolling landscape with a fuzz and crunch that gets toned down for something altogether more reflective.   Of the new single, frontman Ruarri Joseph stated, "With 'Quiet Life,' we wanted to step outside the sound of the trio and build some walls, add some layers for this one. It's a trippy, fuzzy wander down someone else's memory lane, so we went cinematic." Maverick Thinker was recorded out in LA (alongside producer Joseph Lorge) at the legendary Sound City Studios right ahead of last year's March lockdown, and put the band behind the glass and treading the same carpet as Nirvana, Johnny Cash, Neil Young, and Fleetwood Mac. A cursory listen to this new record suggests they might well have inhaled the spirit of them all. But to compare them with the greats does the West Country's William The Conqueror a disservice for they sound unlike any of the above. These are slinky, swampy rock 'n roll songs, razor sharp, dripping with the blues and an oft sardonic vocal delivery by Ruarri, the band's songwriter chief and lead vocalist. Written in the English countryside, it's made for sticky basement bar room stages where they dare to come alive with a vision of bigger rooms and broader stages. Taking that zest to tape has lost none of that fervour. William The Conqueror first began teasing new music last year with “Wake Up,” a gorgeous slice of laissez-faire college rock that sits somewhere in a disorganized melee between Pavement, Speedy Ortiz, and Built to Spill. The Times named it an Essential Track and called it an “agreeably low-slung piece of alt-rock.” It was followed by their previous single “Jesus Died A Young Man,” a song the band described as a rejection of “bad teachers and good faith.” Clash Music called it “guitar pop of real depth and nuance.” Across ten tracks, Maverick Thinker introduces this British band to a wider audience who crave something with a little darkness around the edges and melodies that reverberate for weeks. It's part three of a trilogy that really doesn't require prior knowledge of parts one and two, but should whet the whistle to investigate backwards into a tight back catalogue where the songs do all of the talking. At the tail end of 2020, William The Conqueror also quietly launched a self-titled podcast series. Written and narrated by Ruarri, it's an audio book about a fictional, yet part autobiographical, musician trying to make ends meet, trying to be seen and to be acknowledged, and trying harder still not to care. It's funny, wise, daft, endearing, and often melancholy. Charmingly naïve and wincingly relatable, it's a fun listen, and whilst it's not devised as an accompaniment to the music (nor vice versa), it's a fine package by a fiercely creative group. Canadian indie-rockers Tokyo Police Clubhave released their first album in four years, 'TPC' viaDine Alone Records. The celebrated Canadian outfit has garnered support from a myriad of tastemaker publications such as Pitchfork, Billboard, Huffington Post, NPR, Noisey, Clash Music, Paste Magazine and Consequence of Soundas well as BBC Radio 1presenter Zane Lowe,BBC Radio 1's Phil Taggart and Alice Levine, BBC Radio 6's Steve Lamacq andShaun Keaveny and The Late Show with David Letterman. On top of this, the quartet has played hundreds of venues, including massively acclaimed festivals Glastonbury Festival, Coachella, Lollapalooza, Bumbershoot, Reading and Leeds Festival, Roskilde Festival, Rock am Ring, and Bonnaroo. In 2012, the band joined indie legends Foster the Peopleon the North American portion of their album tour along with songstress Kimbra. Tokyo Police Club wrote their brand new album, 'TPC', in a beautiful old church in rural Ontario, staying together and working on the songs while bonding in the countryside. When the songs were done, the band went out to Los Angeles and recorded them up in the California sunshine with Rob Schnapf, who also produced Tokyo Police Club's 2010 LP 'Champ', as well as many other seminal music releases, including albums by Elliot Smith, The Vines, FIDLAR and Beck. Tokyo Police Club have come back with a renewed energy for 'TPC', pulsing with equal parts attitude and sensitivity. From anthemic numbers like 'DLTFWYH'and 'Hercules'to honest self-reflections in 'Simple Dude' and the poignant 'One Of These Days', this band is showcasing its maturity and undeniable skill like never before, presenting a mature album that is honest, raw and fun its core. With a renewed energy and a can-do attitude, Tokyo Police Club showcase the new skin they're in with 'TPC'. The brand new video release for 'Simple Dude'hits the nail on the head when it comes to the soul-searching nature of Tokyo Police Club's new album; created using film negatives shot by bassist and vocalist Dave Monks during the recording of the new album, lyrics and imagery were then scratched directly into the film negatives and then animated by talented videographer Anne Douris. The result is a simple yet powerful series of visuals tinged with nostalgia, centred on feelings of intimacy and closeness, which we all need and sometimes long for; "My hands, your hands, I've been feeling lonely. Your touch, my touch, I feel the rush. And I've been waiting for it!" The release of Tokyo Police Club's'TPC' album will mark an important moment for this group of musicians, as it almost never came to fruition. Tokyo Police Club drummer Greg Alsop explains, "The feeling that we were so close to breaking up gave us the freedom to enjoy each other more, to enjoy making music together ... If we're not doing it for the sake of being a successful band, but just trying to make an album we're happy with, it takes the pressure off. The expectation was just that we'd do something that would make us happy." In the midst of a near-disbanding, David Monksmanaged to convince the rest of the band that they should not go out without a fight, and not without taking the time to write new music and, importantly, to really enjoy the process. "I think there's a lot more optimism and a lot less confusion now," says Monks. "That's why we called the record 'TPC'. It was a whole process of looking at the band and deciding what it is. There's an excitement and optimism. Let's just let it exist."

A little while ago, not many people outside of a small Scottish town had heard of singer songwriter Michael Forsyth. That changed when his second album ‘Stop For the World' reached number one in the UK iTunes Singer Songwriter chart and began climbing the charts in America, Lithuania and Nepal with similar success, all through word of mouth. For Michael Forsyth, its only ever been about the music. A prolific writer, he is already working on a follow up album to ‘Stop For the World' and his new single ‘Escape the World' is the first track to come from that. An anthemic and accomplished slice of indie pop mixed by celebrated LA based producer Danny Saber, ‘Escape the World' is immediate in its appeal and looks set to further extend Michael's evergrowing fan base as it picks up glowing reviews and playlistings around the world. Mark Millar caught up with Michael for a chat.   This weeks featured band are Empathy Test. Empathy Test are back with double A-Side ‘Demons / Seeing Stars', the first taste of the forthcoming debut album. Since releasing their stunning debut EP, ‘Losing Touch', the enigmatic duo have impressed with their brooding cinematic electro pop sound; winning both critical acclaim and a legion of dedicated fans worldwide. Their music has seen radio support with KCRW, BBC Introducing and XFM and features with MTV, Clash Music, Earmilk and PopMatters amongst others. Isaac Howlett and Adam Relf formed Empathy Test after discovering a mutual love of eighties sci-fi soundtracks, nineties guitar bands and underground dance music. With echoes of CHVRCHES and Purity Ring, their sound has been described as Future Pop, Dark Wave and numerous other variations along similar themes. Get in touch: podcast@xsnoize.com
