Does anxiety or darkness drive you to create? Is creativity the ultimate catharsis? For musician Pete Doherty making art has, at times, been a matter of survival. In this chat with Fearne, Pete explains why taking drugs was less about trying to escape, and more about what he was trying to find. Now he's stopped taking drugs, how does he unlock and express his creativity differently? Pete also confirms that ‘addict' is the right word to describe his behaviour, but that our attitude towards addiction needs to change. Fearne and Pete catch up about the early days of The Libertines, and what Pete labels as ‘the chaos and risk of youth'. He describes how he was sold on the enticing mythologies of a rock n roll lifestyle, but is now much more comfortable living quietly in rural France with his family and dogs. For contributions to #2 of Pete's ‘On Strap' fanzine please post to: 'ON STRAP' FANZINE c/o The Heavy HorseHôtel le Rayon VertRue Général Leclerc76790 EtretatNormandieFRANCE Pete's fifth solo studio album, Felt Better Alive, is out May 16th. On this episode of the podcast we interviewed John UV and Larry Bleachmouth of the Crunchface Fanzine. Crunchface was a fanzine based in Akron , OH that was a great chronicle of the scene at the time . Some will say it was a game changer an had a style and attitude absent from most of the zines at the time. John and Larry's fanzine was recently combined into a book and is available through FVTVREWAVE. Check this out and order the book.

After a week off, the Dudes are joined once again by Donnie to continue Halloween coverage with BRAINDEAD, aka DEADALIVE, the Peter Jackson gorefest classic. Is this a comedy? Is this a horror? Is this the grossest movie of the 90's? All these questions and more will be answered.

We have made it through another year of podcasting and to celebrate we dive into something that has been talked about few times on this show. Almost 50 years ago a fanzine was created by a group of friends. This fanzine was called Outlooks it featured interviews some of comics top talent including Neal Adams, Len Wein, Marv Wolfman and more. It also featured reviews, opinions and artwork from some of the great talents of the time. One of Outlooks creators was our own Joe Peluso but also joining us is returning guest and another part of the Outlooks creative team Jim Chadwick. We hope you enjoy this episode and thank you for being a listener.
Did you know that Sam Raimi did a weirdo Superhero-meets-universal monster type movie in 1990 called DARKMAN? Well the dudes watched it and are here to talk about it, and they're joined by the third dude JOSH and day one friend of the pod DONNIE. Plus, the dudes watched a lot of other flicks and they'll talk about them all, including SPOILER FREE talk about Alien: Romulus.

Throughout the 1980s, Tim Anstaett ran The Offense, an influential, prolific, jam-packed fanzine out of Columbus, Ohio, where he still lives. In the 1990s, Jay Hinman began the underground zine Superdope fanzine out of Seattle, and after a hiatus, picked back up on zine publishing in the 2010s with Dynamite Hemorrhage, which set its stall with a 68-page debut issue. For the last few years, Jay has also been running the Fanzine Hemorrhage web site and newsletter, offering 200 reflective reviews (so far) of select music fanzines (and occasional magazines) from his enormous personal collection. The Offense is one of the few zines Jay has reviewed twice, writing that it “would have been my favorite mag in 1982 had I'd known it existed.” So for this episode of the Fanzine Podcast, podcast host Tony Fletcher brings the pair together for the first time.Over a one-hour conversation, Tim and Jay talked about their early entry points into punk and fanzine culture, hand-written first issues, why they each abandoned advertisers and distributors, their love of 4AD Records in general and the Cocteau Twins in particular, Jay's cult heroes the Flesheaters, their fave zines of all time, and the best letter they ever received.Read more about this episode, and get links to various items discussed – from zine downloads to bands to TV shows and where to get Tim's books – at https://tonyfletcher.substack.com/p/midweek-update-51-the-american-in ... Already as a teenager, Nico discovered his fondness/preference for producing electronic music. In the process, he didn't commit to any particular genre. Only the German techno scene caused him to specialize in techno production. During this time, he, among other things, acted as a DJ in various clubs in his hometown. After some years, he had the impression that he hadn't developed further, and thus, he decided to try electro music. Nico noticed very soon that it was the right challenge for him, and so ELEKTROTECHNIK emerged in 2017. Now he was able to process his emotions and feelings, which didn't leave him unscathed due to current topics. Since then, ELEKTROTECHNIK has put all his energy into the production of electro music. It's definitely been worth it so far because there have been multiple releases on different labels, such as NoteRecordings, Tigerweeds, Fanzine and A.Traction, where he has already released 5 EPs. Happy Star Wars Podcast Day! I'm happy to be participating with a brand new Fandom History Highlight. There was recently a viral post going around of a letter...a fanzine in 1981 stating that they would no longer make their zine after seeing Empire Strikes Back. Those who saw the post were commenting about how nothing ever changes. "No one hates Star Wars like a Star Wars fan," said one commenter. I wanted to dive deeper, to get the full story of why these fanzine editors didn't like Empire, why they had the strong reaction. Was it really supporting a long held negative notion about Star Wars fans? Or does the context change the narrative?Check out all the resources used in my research here (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1A242BKJF0PxFvXvFRR9dAO1ngZ-TgrLT1rNZ5OeVJSU/edit?usp=sharing) and special shout out to fanlore.org for their work in preserving fan history!Follow along with Kara and the IALW Podcast on Instagram at https://instagram.com/intoalargerworldproject?igshid=MzRIODBiNWFIZA==Support the project and Kara's zine on PatreonIf you want to tell YOUR fandom story, send an e-mail to intoalargerworldproject@gmail.com "Beauty Flow" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

In this new episode of Bradbury 100, I explore FUTURIA FANTASIA - the fanzine that Ray Bradbury produced when he was a teenage science fiction fan. The first issue of Futuria Fantasia, published when Ray was eighteen years old, catches him just before he heads off to New York for the first-ever World Science Fiction Convention. In that first issue, he is very much focused on "Tecnhnocracy", a movement which promised to turn science fiction into political reality. The Story of the B-52s: Neon Side of Town (Palgrave Macmillan, 2023) is the first critical history of one of the most legendary and influential bands in American popular music. Locating The B-52s in the intellectual climate of their hometown of Athens, GA and following the band from New York's downtown scene in the early 1980s to their upcoming farewell tour, the book argues that The B-52s are much more significant political and musical influences on American society than their reputation as a silly party band suggests, and that their ongoing commitment to values including cooperation, mutual support, and using disruptive fun as a form of social change are an antidote to the neoliberalization sweeping both Athens and the rest of the Western world. For example, the book shows how the band synthesized influences from the modern artists displayed at the University of Georgia art museum, early queer activism on campus in the 1970s, and their experiences as queer people living through the AIDS crisis to create music that continues to be artistically and politically influential today. The authors are active members of the Athens, GA music scene, and the book includes original interviews with a range of number close to the band. Scott Creney is author of the work of creative nonfiction Dear Al-Qaeda: Letters to the World's Most Notorious Terror Organization (Black Ocean). They have written about music, books, and film for Clash Music, The Fanzine, Collapse Board, and Ablaze!, among others, and contributed six entries to 101 Albums You Should Die Before You Hear.
