I continue my conversation with tribal Judge Victorio Shaw. Humbolt County, on the northern California coast, is known as the place where the name Bigfoot originated and is the home of Murder Mountain, which took its name from serial killers who fled here. The 2018 documentary by the same name explores how Humbolt is the county in the United States with the highest rate of missing persons. But it does not touch on how many of those people are Indigenous. North of Murder Mountain lies the Yurok Reservation, where 33-year-old Emmilee Risling, a University of Oregon graduate and accomplished tribal dancer, disappeared in 2021. We are joined by her cousin, Judge Shaw, to discuss Emilee's case and broader solutions for the challenges of creating a just world for Indigenous people.Listen to our first episode with Victorio:https://silverliningshandbook.com/2025/05/13/145-north-of-murder-mountain-with-judge-victorio-shaw-part-2-of-2/For more information on Emmilee's case, check our the feature in The New York Times, "Whose Searching for Emmiliee Risling?":https://www.nytimes.com/2025/05/14/us/missing-persons-emmilee-risling.html?smid=nytcore-android-shareContact me at silverliningshandbookpod@gmail.comCheck out the Silver Linings Handbook website at:https://silverliningshandbook.com/Check out our Patreon to support the show at:https://www.patreon.com/thesilverliningshandbookJoin our Facebook Group at:https://www.facebook.com/groups/1361159947820623Visit the Silver Linings Handbook store to support the podcast at:https://www.bonfire.com/store/the-silver-linings-handbook-podcast-storeVisit The True Crime Times Substack at:https://truecrimemessenger.substack.comThe Silver Linings Handbook podcast is a part of the ART19 network. On August 10, 1977, the NYPD arrested David Berkowitz for the Son of Sam murders that had terrorized New York City for over a year. Berkowitz confessed to shooting sixteen people and killing six with a .44 caliber Bulldog revolver, and the case was officially closed. Journalist Maury Terry was suspicious of Berkowitz's confession. Spurred by conflicting witness descriptions of the killer and clues overlooked in the investigation, Terry was convinced Berkowitz didn't act alone. Meticulously gathering evidence for a decade, he released his findings in the first edition of The Ultimate Evil. Based upon the evidence he had uncovered, Terry theorized that the Son of Sam attacks were masterminded by a Yonkers-based cult that was responsible for other ritual murders across the country. After Terry's death in 2015, documentary filmmaker Josh Zeman (Cropsey, The Killing Season, Murder Mountain) was given access to Terry's files, which form the basis of his docuseries with Netflix and a companion podcast. Taken together with The Ultimate Evil, which includes a new introduction by Zeman, these works reveal the stunning intersections of power, wealth, privilege, and evil in America—from the Summer of Sam until today.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Season 3 Part 2 of the Travels With Randy Podcast is here! The Oregon And California Coast And The Stars At Death Valley Part 2 of Randy's yearlong adventure finds him headed south on 101 from Washington into Oregon and then into California. The weather was very poor in Oregon and so Randy didn't see many opportunities to stop and take scenic pics. He'll try the Oregon coast again some other time. California, though, was a completely different matter. Randy travelled down the entire Cali coastline over several days, marveling at the beauty of the northern Cali Redwoods and the creepy Humboldt County winding roads and scenery (see Murder Mountain on Netflix ) . He then visited Bubba and Mrs. Bubba's favorite places, Mendicino and Little River. He continued to follow the coastline down past San Francisco and San Jose and Monterey to the Lompoc area and Vandenberg Space Force Base. Randy then turned Snuffy east and drove across the state to Death Valley, where he experienced the most incredible night sky he's ever seen. Finally, Snuffy came to rest near Camp Pendleton, where Randy will stay and work for a while until it's time to head to Spring Training! A 50-year-old man had ritual sex with a 12-year-old girl while adult women assisted. And everyone was cool with it. That's just part of the bizarre story told in Netflix's Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey and the exploits of its prophet, Warren Jeffs. Keep Sweet's Fascination It's the story of a renegade Mormon group that still practice polygamy. Vigorous polygamy, especially the type that lets old men bang young women and, occasionally, girls. It's the kind of thing that disgusts, but it also arouses, at least at some level. Sex sells for a reason. Keep Sweet did, its IMDB rating currently sitting at 7.3 with 11,000 reviews (Netflix's Murder Mountain, which enjoyed the endorsement of Joe Rogan, sits at 6.8 with 3,200 reviews). But I don't think sex is the only reason Keep Sweetfascinates. I think it fascinates because, although everyone understands the sex part, they can't understand how an entire culture could allow such a thing to occur. If It Doesn't Fit, Put It on the Shelf The docuseries tries to explain it, but every interview or explanation came down to the same thing: it's how these people were raised. It was the only thing these people knew. They were raised in a polygamous culture that celebrated their prophet. If the prophet told girls to do something—or someone—they did it/him. If something didn't make sense, they were told to “put it on the shelf.” And just as the lechery of old men resonates with all men at some level, this kind of rationality resonates too. These girls who submitted to sex with old men, the parents who gave their consent the women who participated in the erotic ritual: they acted rationally. It's All Rational That's the real dirty secret in the docuseries and another reason why, besides the sex, it fascinates. We're all capable of such a thing. Not because of our nethers. But because of our brains. Show notes here

To accompany Murder at Murder Mountain, I am releasing five deep dive episodes which delve into the history of the early 19th century Ireland in greater detail. These will be released between the main episodes. This is deep dive looks at the pre-Famine catholic church. While religion was very important during Ellen Kennedy's childhood, the catholic church emerging from centuries of repression was a very different organsation than it is today. In this podcast Salvador Ryan, professor of Ecclesiastical History in Maynooth, discusses religion and wider spiritual beliefs in the decades before the famine. He also explains why rituals surrounding pattern days and ancient holy wells (also mentioned in episode one) were frowned on by the church hierarchy. Greg sits down with us today to talk about his experience working the infamous “Murder Mountain” area in Northern California. It's famous for two things. Growing weed and people that disappear. We also discussed his other work experiences and life in general as a first responder. In part two of my discussion with Kristen Seavy from the Murder She Told Podcast we talk the disappearance and eventual discovery of the remains of her childhood friend Danielle Bertolini, as well as the Humboldt Five. Detailed description below. Description of original episode on Murder She Told: My childhood friend's disappearanceThe story that I have for you this week is the story of my childhood friend, Danielle Bertolini. She and I grew up together in my small hometown of Newport, Maine (population 3,200). We were friends and classmates in elementary and junior high, and I fondly remember her unapologetic and spunky personality. At 23 years old, in 2014, she went missing in Fortuna, California in Humboldt County.Today, she is known as one of the Humboldt County Missing Five. Danielle's mother's heartrending interviewFor years I followed her case on Facebook through the family's updates, seeing and sharing their pain. This is a story that's been in my heart for a long time, but I just didn't know how to tell right. But when I reached out to Danielle's mother, to talk to me, on the record, about her daughter's tragic disappearance and death, she agreed. We sat down at my dining room table, and we had a surprisingly intimate and tough conversation about Danielle's life, and her death. The majesty of the redwoods and the darkness that lurks withinDanielle moved across the country to a beautiful area called Humboldt county, home of some of the tallest trees in the world, the giant redwoods. The beauty of the trees is juxtaposed by the ugliness of the crime and the proliferation of drugs in the area.Alder Point, California, a small town in Humboldt County, is flanked by a famous peak dubbed “Murder Mountain” where many have gone missing and many have died. Murder Mountain initially got it's nickname after serial killer couple Michael Bear Carson and Suzan Carson hid out there after murdering 26-year-old Clark Stephens in 1982, seeking refuge in the trees while police tried to nab the perpetrator of their crimes. But it stuck because of the sheer number of people who disappear and are found murdered in Humboldt County.Drugs, lies, murder, and a search for justiceDanielle's life was transformed by the loss of her son Xavier. She left behind her life in Maine, where she had constant reminders of her trauma, and went to find a fresh start in California amidst the redwoods. But California wasn't the answer she was looking for, and Danielle fell into the wrong crowd and was using heavily. Before her disappearance, she trapped and trying to find a way out.One year later, a human skull is found washed up on the bank of the Eel River, and is ultimately identified as Danielle's.Join the fight! A petition to prioritize this caseI have started a petition on change.org to dial up the pressure on this case. Danielle isn't the only person to go missing under the same circumstances. There is a person of interest and there is evidence. Justice is so close. Help the family get the closure that they deserve.SIGN THE PETITIONhttps://www.change.org/p/humboldt-county-district-attorney-justice-for-danielle-bertolini-and-sheila-franks?utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=custom_url&recruited_by_id=5b2baae0-2626-11e6-b7a5-3be3a030e21aA very special thanks to Billie Jo Dick for sharing her daughter's life story and memories with me.If you're holding onto any information or think you might know something about the murders of Danielle Bertolini and Sheila Franks, I urge you to submit a tip to the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office Anonymous Tip Line at (707) 268-2539.Connect on Instagram (@MurderSheToldPodcast) for photos from this episode and more.Murder She Told Danielle Bertolini Pt One: https://www.murdershetold.com/episodes/danielle-bertoliniDanielle Bertolini Part Two ft. Documentary filmmaker and director, Joshua Zeman, returns with a brand-new doc, “The Loneliest Whale: The Search For 52,” available now in theaters and on demand (https://bleeckerstreetmedia.com/the-loneliest-whale). It's a departure from his typical true crime stories (aka “Cropsey,” “Murder Mountain,” “Sons of Sam”), and instead embarks on an expedition to find the one rare whale in the ocean that sings at its own frequency (52 hertz), and why scientists believe this whale has lived its whole life in complete solitude! Josh explains how one kickstarter campaign got the ball rolling on this journey, how and when actors Leonardo DiCaprio and Adrian Grenier of “Entourage” fame got involved, and what it was like to spend 7 days on the ocean searching for and tagging whales. He recounts some of their open sea adventures, how the story evolved into more than just the “Search for 52,” and some of the unexpected help they encountered along the way.

The Son of Sam case grew into a lifelong obsession for journalist Maury Terry, who became convinced that the murders were linked to a satanic cult. Author Maury Terry becomes convinced that serial killer David Berkowitz did not act alone and tries to prove that the web of darkness behind the Son of Sam murders goes deeper than anyone imagined -- and his investigation costs him everything. The hunt for the "Son of Sam" captivated the world in the late 1970s, but the story behind one of America's most notorious serial murderers is all but forgotten -- until now. While the arrest and conviction of David Berkowitz brought the nightmare to an end for many New Yorkers, for journalist and Ultimate Evil author Maury Terry, the real mystery was just beginning. Terry, convinced Berkowitz had not acted alone, would go on to spend decades attempting to prove that the web of darkness behind the murders went deeper than anyone imagined -- and his pursuit of that elusive truth would eventually cost him everything. Filmmaker Joshua Zeman (CROPSEY, MURDER MOUNTAIN) draws on archival news footage, conversations with the people closest to the investigation, and Terry's own words and case files to tell a cautionary tale of a man who went down a rabbit hole and never came out. But was Maury Terry just chasing ghosts -- or are the true Sons of Sam still out thereSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. On this week's episode, Alex, Calvin, and Caitlan seek a formal definition of True Crime, identifying the strategies, rhetorical and otherwise, that have elevated the genre and its diverse sub-genres to the realm of cultural obsession. Our hosts discuss what distinguishes True Crime from “untrue” crime shows or other types of “true” content related to crime. They then explore how medium structure, genre features, and various narrative techniques are employed to captivate and motivate consumers of True Crime—particularly in new media that draw on audience participation to push their reporting forward. Our hosts go on to analyze how “new” True Crime - like the podcast Serial or the docu-series Making a Murderer - takes its audience behind the curtain of the criminal justice system, and how these media combine a creative approach to storytelling with a journalistic search for truth when presenting cases of public interest. How does a sharp focus on evidence gathering raise public consciousness around the miscarriage of justice? Our hosts also begin to untangle the ethical implications for those producing and consuming True Crime. When popular series cash in on the public's morbid fascination for sensational stories, does this decision serve to unethically commodify our consumption of tragic events? As our hosts discuss their favorite True Crime productions—as well as those that they find more problematic—they probe the critical potential of the genre. Can rigorous reporting open up the dialogic space for alternative narratives in unsolved cases? Can certain genre tropes, like exposing coerced confessions, work in the service of social justice? Ultimately, what can True Crime do, and what is it currently doing, to affect our politics and public culture?Works and Concepts Cited in this EpisodeBoudet, M. (Host). (2013). Toby Ball returns to discuss the clashes between two sets of sixties ideals and one implacable system, capitalism, in the latest podcast. We led off with Netflix's six-part series on the changing times in Humboldt County, CA, Murder Mountain, and its heady blend (so to speak) of true crime and subcultural documentation. How does it stack up with Josh Zeman's other projects? Did it need another couple of episodes to follow the fates of "trimmigrants"? And should the series have arranged a certain poignant meeting? Later, we contemplated 2003 Oscar-nominated The Weather Underground and the simultaneously corny and resonant message of the Weathermen here in 2019, plus the utility of bombing, well, utilities, and why the film seemed to avert its eyes from the group's biggest mistakes. Not sure "bombs, joints, and naked carpentry" is quite as catchy as "sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll," but grab your toolbelts and a lighter and let's find out in The Blotter Presents, Episode 83.
