Bullying has become a national issue. But what do you do if the school bully is your child's teacher? Bullying is starting to get national attention and be taken more seriously than in days past. While the mean girls, the taunters, tormentors, the physical abusers, and the excluders are very real threats, so too are educators who abuse their power over the very kids they are supposed to protect. When teachers verbally and even physically abuse kids, the abuse is often blatant and rarely called, "bullying". Reinforcing the false notion that only kids, not the grown-ups in charge are bullies.   Is this a product of nonexistent school reform? Does the system have the proper resources to control this problem?  Leading authority on educational policy, Clete Bulach uses his book - Creating a Culture for High Performing Schools: A Comprehensive Approach to School Reform and Dropout Prevention - to discuss the issue of school bullying and what can be done to get it under control.

A lot of teachers are unhappy in their profession and approximately 50% of students do not want to go to school. That’s what Dr. Clete Bulach concluded from his interviews with teachers and students from every school district in the state of Georgia. Dr. Bulach is a retired Ohio school superintendent and an associate professor emeritus at the University of West Georgia. He began writing a book about a school climate and culture that creates an atmosphere where kids would want to go and where teachers would love to teach them. He found that there is only one school in the state that is like that school, and it’s a school culture where the kids control their own behavior. Dr. Bulach says you’ve got to stop correcting misbehavior. If you change that and get the kids to control their own behavior, you have changed the culture and climate of the school. Love the show? A question that philosophers have been asking themselves for centuries has been why do people behave the way they do? The first reason they come up with relates to schools because school is all about human relations. Dr. Clete Bulach, retired professor and author, says that all human beings have five basic needs – safety or to be alive, happiness, power, care, and purpose, and you can see all of these needs interplaying at school. You cannot live a life without getting your basic needs met, and kids whose needs are not being met can turn to alcohol, drugs, suicide or other resources to fill a temporary vacuum. Dr. Bulach reiterates the significance of being a servant leader that takes into account the needs of the people they are serving because your leadership determines whether these needs are being met. We're going to talk about one of the things that everyone really wants to run away from conflict. Dr. Clete Bulach boils that down to a commonsense approach to Four Techniques to Keep You from The Conflict. And each one of them has a win or lose. When there's a conflict you can win, lose and you can lose, lose and you can win, win, The secret of being a good leader is knowing when to take on the conflict, when wait till another time to take it on. The competitive style. When we win you lose tends to be disruptive? The win,win in a win, win you try to find out what the other party wants. And you try to give it to them, so they can win also, in a win, win you try to find out what the other party wants. and you try to give it to them, so they can win also. When you can't find a win when you go to lose, lose and that's compromise When you compromise you have to give up something, you give something up and the other party has to give something up also in order to get the deal done. In Lose, lose you get something right so lose, lose compromise is a valuable tool in dealing with conflicts, if you can't get to a win, win you go to a lose, lose right and it's not it's not that everyone you lose and actually you lose and to win. Yes, you're losing something to get something you wanted. The other one the most intriguing one is avoidance, when do you avoid a conflict? Listen to the podcast in its entirety and you will really from Dr. Clete Bulach wisdom in this area of conflict. Steps to Make Schools and Society a Better Place Schools are no longer safe havens for children. Violence has become part of the fabric of our society. It is pervasive on television, in sports, music, video games, and even in our schools and workplaces. Students cannot learn in an unsafe environment. A welcoming environment is particularly important for those students who are struggling in school and need extra support. How did our school get to this point? Where did our society go wrong? Leading Authority on Educational Policy Clete Bulach uses his book “Creating a Culture for High Performing Schools: A Comprehensive Approach to School Reform and Dropout Prevention" to discuss the tragic school shootings that have plagued our education system and what can be done to prevent them. Clete Bulach answers the following questions: * How can we make our schools and society safer? * What causes the mass school shootings? * Which of life’s five basic needs is most likely to cause a shooter to act? * What are the major causes for low test scores and high school dropouts? http://www.westga.edu/~cbulach/
