Despite living more solidly in the psychology domain, Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS) as a treatment for oppositional behaviors is increasingly moving into the mainstream. But does its attempts to change behavior patterns make it behavior analytic or something else? Fiore, PhD, is Director, Cognitive Sciences Laboratory, and Professor with the University of Central Florida's Cognitive Sciences Program in the Department of Philosophy and School of Modeling, Simulation, and Training. He maintains a multidisciplinary research interest that incorporates aspects of the cognitive, social, organizational, and computational sciences in the investigation of learning and performance in individuals and teams. His primary area of research is the interdisciplinary study of complex collaborative cognition and the understanding of how humans interact socially and with technology.Dr. Fiore is Immediate Past President of the International Network for the Science of Team Science, and Past President for the Interdisciplinary Network for Group Research. In 2018, Dr. Fiore was nominated to DARPA's Information Sciences and Technology (ISAT) Study Group to help the Department of Defense examine future areas of technological development potentially influencing national security. He has been a visiting scholar for the study of shared and extended cognition at École Normale Supérieure de Lyon in Lyon, France (2010), and an invited visitor to the internationally renowned interdisciplinary Santa Fe Institute (2013). He was a member of the expert panel for the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development's 2015 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), which focused on collaborative problem-solving skills. He has contributed to working groups for the National Academies of Sciences in understanding and measuring "21st-Century Skills" and was a committee member of their "Science of Team Science" consensus study, as well as a member of the National Assessment of Educational Progress report on "Collaborative Problem Solving".Dr. Fiore has been awarded the University of Central Florida (UCF) prestigious Research Incentive Award four times to acknowledge his significant accomplishments, and he is recipient of UCF's Luminary Award (2019), as recognition for his work having a significant impact on the world, and UCF's Reach for the Stars Award (2014), as recognition for bringing international prominence to the university. As Principal Investigator and Co-Principal Investigator, Dr. Fiore has helped to secure and manage approximately $35 million in research funding. He is co-author of a book on “Accelerating Expertise” (2013) and is a co-editor of volumes on Shared Cognition (2012), Macrocognition in Teams (2008), Distributed Training (2007), and Team Cognition (2004). Mike is Executive Director of Matthew House Refugee Centre which provides temporary shelter and settlement services for Refugee Claimants. On this episode, Sadie and Gavi are once again joined by Dr. Shoshana Fagen, who lends her considerable expertise to the discussion of the ubiquitous and infamous fundamentalist parenting book/child abuse manual, "To Train Up A Child," By Michael and Debi Pearl. The techniques recommended in this book have been used by fundamentalist families like the Duggars for decades. Together with Shoshana, they examine how truly horrible and harmful this book is, and what healing from this sort of upbringing might look like.TW: In general we talk about a lot of potentially triggering topics on this show, including but not limited to suicide and mental health, racism, misogyny, PTSD and PTSD symptoms, child abuse, mental, physical, and sexual abuse, and spiritual abuse including guilt, shame, and fear. In most episodes we'll mention at least a few of these topics, but we try very hard to avoid graphic detail unless it's relevant to the story we're telling, and we do our best to give the audience a heads-up before going into detail on any of these topics. This Entire Episode carries a trigger warning for child abuse, specifically, hitting, spanking, hitting with implements, what implements are recommended to hit your child, how to break a child's spirit. We will of course be validating survivors of such abuse, talking scientifically about why it's not okay, trying to use language that's less triggering, but it is the topic of the episode. Joyce's guest in this episode is Suzi Spencer, alternative high school teacher in Salem. Collaborative problem solving has been used in Suzi's school for the last few years. Suzi defines collaborative problem solving as a situation where all involved parties are asked for their perspective, all perspectives are honored, and the parties come up with solutions together. Collaborative problem solving is proactive instead of reactive and in a school setting, seeks to avoid punishment. It can also be used in adult relationships, as it works with all ages. Suzi describes the three steps involved: empathy, define the problem, and invitation. This last step is where the parties generate realistic solutions together. After choosing to leave her dream job as a private school administrator in NYC, she founded  The Flawless Foundation - whose mission is to revolutionize the way the world perceives brain health and promote prevention and holistic wellness.  Janine's work-legacy is about changing lives and giving back, first as a teacher, then school administrator, and now in mental health.  She focuses on motivation and feedback, providing resources, changing people's lives, and giving them resources. The Flawless Foundation has developed a robust intern program and Janine loves to connect with people, collaborate and create change. Those who work with Janine always feel supported and are amazed at her boundless energy to make change happen in the realm of mental health. During his tenure, the church has grown in membership and has achieved new stability and direction. Under his leadership, the PVCOC has begun a number of initiatives to educate members on topics such as sexual addiction, personal financial management, and parenting. Prior to his work with PVCOC, Sajjan was with the Boston Church of Christ and has worked as a missionary in New Delhi, India; Sofia, Bulgaria; and Tirane, Albania. He has experience providing premarital counseling, marital counseling, and pastoral counseling with congregations of diverse ethnicities, addressing areas such as grief, sickness, and recovery from trauma.Rondey Allen, LICSW is licensed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as an Independent Clinical Social Worker. He has extensive experience in a variety of settings concerning youth and families at risk. He administered group and individual therapy in DYS treatment programs with violent and sexual offenders. He performed intensive clinical case management and outreach in Boston's C11 Police district to high-risk youth. He was an outreach clinician for MSPCC in the Springfield Area and Clinical Director for the River Valley Academy, a special education school in the Holyoke area. He is currently a clinical consultant and trainer for the Westover Job Corps Center.He is trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Family Systems Therapy, and Collaborative Problem Solving.
