Keith Morrison has spoken with dozens of inmates over his career, but nothing comes close to his jailhouse interview with Lori Vallow Daybell. Not in sheer strangeness, not in frustration, and certainly not in the way she seemed completely at ease sitting across from him, spinning a story that defied both logic and reality. It took years for Morrison and his team to secure the interview. Letters, emails, and persistence finally paid off when Daybell agreed to sit down with him in Maricopa County Jail. Ninety minutes. That was the time they were granted. And Morrison, a seasoned journalist, thought that would be more than enough. But it wasn't. From the moment she walked into the room, it was clear that Daybell was not there to confess or clarify. She winked at the camera, her demeanor unsettlingly upbeat for someone convicted of the murders of her two youngest children, JJ Vallow and Tylee Ryan, along with Chad Daybell's former wife, Tammy Daybell. She's already serving a life sentence in Idaho, and another trial looms in Arizona for the death of her fourth husband, Charles Vallow. Yet, none of that seemed to weigh on her. Instead, she took control of the interview, redirecting, deflecting, and challenging Morrison at every turn. “Get your facts straight, Keith,” she chided him more than once, as if she were the one in charge of setting the record straight. “I thought we were going to be friends, Keith.” There was an unsettling rhythm to her words, a performative quality, like she had rehearsed these lines in her head long before the cameras started rolling. Morrison, no stranger to manipulative interview subjects, saw right through it. She had an agenda, and it wasn't to tell the truth. It was to tell her truth—the one that lives inside her head, untouched by facts or evidence. The chore, as Morrison described it, was to pull her off that well-rehearsed train track and into a place where reality mattered. But Lori wasn't having it. She danced around questions, throwing out a sprawling, convoluted narrative that he likened to a shaggy dog story—a long-winded, winding tale designed to eat up time and avoid the hard questions. “She's no dummy,” Morrison admitted. “She knew exactly what she was doing.” And what she was doing was making sure the focus remained on the illusion she had created, not on the brutal, undeniable facts of what happened to her children. But here's the thing—Lori Vallow Daybell isn't just delusional. She's charismatic. That's what makes her dangerous. That's what made people follow her. It's easy to think of cult leaders as fringe weirdos, but they're rarely that obvious. They're likable. Persuasive. Charming. Morrison could see it. She smiled. She laughed. She joked. She exuded confidence. She didn't see herself as mentally ill, though multiple evaluations declared her incompetent for trial before she was finally deemed fit. No, in her mind, she is right. And everyone else? They just don't understand. That charm, that ability to manipulate, is exactly how she convinced people to go along with her apocalyptic beliefs, her “vision” of who was light and who was dark. And when people—children included—were labeled dark, well, we know what happened next. By the end of the interview, Morrison was mentally exhausted. She had drained him, just as she had drained everyone who tried to pin her down with the truth. When the cameras stopped rolling, she smiled and told him he'd have to come back if he wanted to ask anything else. He walked out thinking, I never want to do that again. But almost immediately, he knew he would. Because that's what Lori Vallow Daybell does. She lures people in. Even those who know exactly what she is. The two-hour Dateline special will feature Morrison's full interview with Daybell, as well as conversations with law enforcement, legal experts, and her surviving son, Colby Ryan, who has spent years trying to rebuild his life in the aftermath of his mother's crimes. The Law of Lori Exoneration or Delusion Lori Vallow Daybell says she will be exonerated. Not maybe. Not possibly. She is certain. And she's saying this from behind bars, awaiting trial for the murder of her fourth husband, while her current husband sits on death row. If there's one thing Lori has always had, it's confidence—whether it's in her bizarre religious beliefs, her devotion to Chad Daybell, or her ability to deny reality even when it's staring her in the face. This week, she sat down with NBC's Keith Morrison for what's being described as an “extensive and often combative” interview. And if there's anyone who can handle combative, it's Keith Morrison. The full special is set to air on 'Dateline,' where Lori, dressed in an orange jumpsuit and purple handcuffs, tells the world exactly what she wants them to believe. She's going to be exonerated. Not only that—she's seen the future, and in that future, she and Chad are free. She claims Jesus himself showed her this vision when she was in heaven. Now, most people who claim to see heaven aren't sitting in a jail cell convicted of murdering their own children, but then again, Lori has never been like most people. Lori was sentenced to life in prison in 2023 for the murders of her two youngest children, 7-year-old JJ Vallow and 16-year-old Tylee Ryan, as well as for the murder of Chad Daybell's first wife, Tammy Daybell. The details of those crimes were horrifying—JJ and Tylee's bodies were found buried on Chad's Idaho property, their remains showing the unthinkable levels of brutality they endured. Tammy's death, originally ruled natural, was later determined to be a homicide. Chad was convicted of the same crimes. His fate, however, was different. In 2024, he was sentenced to death. The man Lori still refers to as her eternal husband is now waiting for his execution date while she sits in an Arizona jail, awaiting trial for yet another murder—that of her fourth husband, Charles Vallow. Charles had long suspected Lori's descent into religious extremism was dangerous. He tried to get help, to warn people. Then one day, in July 2019, he was shot dead by Lori's brother, Alex Cox, who conveniently died later that same year, taking any potential confessions with him. Lori, undeterred by any of this, is still talking. In the upcoming 'Dateline' special, she's not just giving her side—she's doubling down. It's not a confession, and it's certainly not remorse. It's Lori being Lori. Believing that no matter what happens, she's special. She's chosen. The rules don't apply to her. The special also features interviews with key figures in the case, including Rexburg police detective Ray Hermosillo, Madison County Sheriff Ron Ball, Madison County prosecutor Rob Wood, retired FBI agent Douglas Hart, and journalist Nate Eaton, who has covered the case from the beginning. But the voice that carries the most weight belongs to Lori's eldest son, Colby Ryan. Colby, the only surviving child of Lori's, has watched as the mother he once knew disappeared into a twisted world of doomsday prophecies and murder. And in his interview, he doesn't hold back. He describes how the way his sister was treated, even after her death, was so depraved it changed the way he sees people altogether. And he's right—because what happened to Tylee wasn't just a murder. It was something that defies humanity. This will be the seventh 'Dateline' episode dedicated to Lori and Chad, and if history is any indication, it won't be the last. The fascination with this case isn't just about crime—it's about belief. About how two people could convince themselves they were on some divine mission while leaving behind a trail of destruction. For those who still can't wrap their heads around how any of this happened, 'Dateline' might provide some answers—or at least another look into the mind of a woman who remains convinced she's destined for something greater than a prison cell. 'Law of the land' says she's guilty. 'Law of Lori' says she's getting out. #LoriVallowDaybell #Dateline #TrueCrime #ChadDaybell Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Lori Vallow Daybell says she will be exonerated. Lori Vallow Daybell Requests to Represent Herself in Arizona Murder Trial

Lori Vallow Daybell, widely known as the "Doomsday cult mom," is seeking to represent herself in her upcoming Arizona trial, where she faces charges related to the death of her fourth husband, Charles Vallow, and the attempted murder of her niece's ex-husband, Brandon Boudreaux. According to court documents, Vallow Daybell filed her request to waive her right to legal counsel on October 16, followed by a motion from her public defender on October 21 to withdraw from the case. However, the judge has postponed making a final decision on Vallow Daybell's request until she completes a competency evaluation under Arizona's Rule 11 process, which will determine her mental fitness to represent herself in court. This isn't Vallow Daybell's first encounter with mental health evaluations. In February 2023, a psychiatric assessment revealed that she suffers from a “delusional disorder” strongly associated with “hyper-religiosity” and has an “unspecified personality disorder with narcissistic features.” This diagnosis followed nearly nine months spent in an Idaho state mental hospital to restore her competency before her Idaho murder trial, where she was ultimately deemed mentally fit to stand trial. Her case's frequent delays and unusual twists have kept it in the national spotlight. During her Idaho trial, where she was convicted of murdering her two youngest children, Tylee Ryan and Joshua "JJ" Vallow, along with Tammy Daybell, the former wife of her fifth husband, Chad Daybell, prosecutors presented evidence of the couple's extreme religious beliefs. Testimonies highlighted their shared ideology of "light" and "dark" souls, in which they allegedly believed certain individuals could be “dark souls” possessed by malevolent entities they referred to as “zombies.” Prosecutors argued that these beliefs fueled the pair's actions, asserting that Vallow Daybell and Chad Daybell killed to remove “dark” souls from their lives, paving the way for their future together. Chad Daybell, a self-published author of apocalyptic fiction, is currently on death row following his conviction for the same murders in June. Their intertwined beliefs and relationship reportedly began as an affair while both were active in a “Doomsday cult” that held apocalyptic and extreme religious views. The prosecution in Idaho argued that Vallow Daybell and Daybell used these beliefs to justify their heinous acts, leading to an intense media frenzy and public intrigue around the case. Further adding to the intrigue, a recently released phone call between Vallow Daybell and her oldest son, Colby Ryan, shows her denying responsibility for her children's deaths. In the call, Vallow Daybell claimed that her daughter, Tylee, accidentally killed JJ and then took her own life. “What if Tylee was holding JJ down and trying to get him not to scream and be loud in an apartment? What if she held him down too long and realized afterward what she had done?” she told Ryan, who responded with shock to his mother's assertions. Vallow Daybell also claimed to have “run out” of the apartment upon finding her children dead, suggesting that someone else disposed of their bodies. “I wasn't aware what happened to them after I left that scene,” she added. “Their spirits were gone from their bodies. They were already in heaven.” The Arizona trial, initially scheduled for February 24, 2025, now hinges on Vallow Daybell's upcoming mental health evaluation, which will determine if she is fit to represent herself in court. Vallow Daybell, already serving a life sentence without parole in Idaho, continues to captivate public interest as her legal proceedings unfold, marked by extreme religious beliefs, chilling statements, and mounting legal battles.

Colby tries to understand Lori's belief system and what truly happened to his younger siblings, Tylee Ryan and JJ Vallow. Lori, in a calm and collected manner, recounts her version of events, claiming that Tylee accidentally killed JJ and then took her own life out of guilt. She asserts that she left the scene and allowed others to take care of the situation, denying any involvement in the gruesome way their bodies were found. Throughout the conversation, Lori maintains a detached and eerie calmness, convinced of her divine mission from Jesus and the influence of Lucifer in her life. She claims that her children's spirits visited her, apologizing and assuring her it wasn't her fault. Colby expresses his disbelief in her narrative, highlighting the inconsistencies and the brutality inflicted upon his siblings after their deaths. Despite everything, he ultimately forgives his mother for what she has become - a mother lost to her delusions. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Chad Daybell was sentenced to death on Saturday after a jury recommended the penalty for his convictions of first-degree murder and conspiracy in the deaths of his first wife, Tammy Daybell, and two of his second wife's children, 16-year-old Tylee Ryan and 7-year-old Joshua “JJ” Vallow. The case, driven by elements of power, sex, money, and apocalyptic spiritual beliefs, has captivated national attention. Judge Steven Boyce formally imposed the death sentence after the jury's lengthy deliberations concluded that the death penalty was appropriate. Daybell, who appeared with a blank expression as the judge read the sentence, also received a 15-year prison term for insurance fraud charges. The sequestered jury began their deliberations on Friday afternoon, taking six hours before pausing for the night. They resumed deliberations at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, reaching a verdict by 10:45 a.m. "This defendant exhibited utter disregard for human life," Prosecutor Rob Wood told the jury on Friday, asking them to consider several aggravating factors that warranted the death penalty. Wood emphasized that the murders were committed for financial gain, citing Daybell's conviction for insurance fraud related to life insurance policies that paid out after Tammy Daybell's death. Additionally, both Chad and Lori Vallow Daybell were convicted of grand theft for continuing to collect Social Security benefits for the children after their deaths. Wood further argued that the murders were “especially heinous, atrocious, or cruel, manifesting exceptional depravity.” He described Daybell's actions as a clear threat to society, suggesting that his propensity for murder could continue. "It is your decision whether one or more of these aggravators has been proven. And if it has been, you must decide if, under these circumstances, imposition of the death penalty would be just or unjust," Wood concluded. The jury's decision was influenced by the contrasting portrayals of Daybell. Prosecutors painted him as a manipulative figure whose actions were driven by greed and apocalyptic beliefs. In contrast, the defense sought to humanize Daybell, emphasizing that he still had family who cared about him. The sensational nature of the case, which included claims of apocalyptic prophecies, "zombie" children, and illicit affairs, was highlighted in a 2022 Netflix true-crime documentary, further amplifying public interest. Chad Daybell's second wife, Lori Vallow Daybell, was also convicted last year for the murder of her children and conspiring to kill Tammy Daybell. She is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole and has appealed her convictions, raising questions about her mental competency to stand trial. Authorities believe Tylee and JJ were killed in September 2019, the same month they were last seen. Tammy Daybell was found dead in her Idaho home on October 19, 2019, just weeks before Chad Daybell married Lori Vallow Daybell. During the trial, emotional testimonies from the victims' families illustrated the profound loss and grief caused by the murders.  Colby Ryan, Tylee's brother, expressed his sorrow, saying, "I will never get to see my sister grow up or achieve her dreams. She was robbed of her life, and we were robbed of her presence." Larry Woodcock, JJ's grandfather, described JJ as "a light in our lives, cruelly extinguished." As the sentencing was handed down, the courtroom remained solemn. The decision to impose the death penalty on Chad Daybell underscores the severity of his crimes and the enduring impact on the victims' families. The case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of manipulative and violent behavior masked by extreme beliefs. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? During Friday's session, emotional testimonies from the victims' families were anticipated, aiming to provide the jury with a deeper understanding of the devastating impact of Daybell's actions. These statements are critical as they contribute to the jury's decision on the appropriate sentence for Daybell.    The courtroom heard first from Colby Ryan, Tylee's brother, who struggled through tears to convey his grief. "I will never get to see my sister grow up or achieve her dreams," he said. "She was robbed of her life, and we were robbed of her presence."    Following Colby, Larry and Kay Woodcock, JJ Vallow's grandparents, took the stand. Larry's voice shook as he described the pain of losing JJ, saying, "JJ was a light in our lives, and that light was cruelly extinguished. We will never recover from this loss."    As the day progressed, Tammy Daybell's family shared their anguish. Tammy's sister, Samantha Gwilliam, addressed the court with a mixture of sorrow and anger. "Tammy was a loving wife, mother, and sister. She deserved so much more than to be a victim of such betrayal and violence," Gwilliam stated.    The prosecution highlighted the cold and calculated nature of Daybell's actions, urging the jury to consider the maximum penalty. "Chad Daybell's crimes were premeditated and heinous. The loss felt by these families is immeasurable," said Prosecutor Rob Wood. "Justice demands that he faces the severest consequences."    Daybell's defense team sought to humanize their client, arguing that his life should be spared. "While Mr. Daybell has been convicted, he is still a father and has family who care about him. We ask the jury to consider life in prison without the possibility of parole," pleaded defense attorney John Prior.    The jury's deliberation on whether Daybell should receive a life sentence or the death penalty is expected to be intense and potentially lengthy, given the gravity of the crimes and the emotional weight of the victim impact statements.    Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? In the podcast episode "Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski," retired FBI Special Agent Robin Dreeke discusses the recent testimonies of Chad Daybell's children in his ongoing trial. The children, who previously expressed their belief in their father's innocence, took the stand to defend him. Dreeke compares their unwavering support to that of Alec Murdoch's son, emphasizing the complex emotional ties and unconditional love children often have for their parents, even in the face of serious accusations. He contrasts this with Lori Vallow's son, Colby Ryan, who has openly condemned his mother. Dreeke suggests that Chad Daybell's seemingly normal behavior masked deeper issues, while Lori Vallow's erratic actions made her a more obvious target for blame. The podcast features a clip of Chad's daughter discussing her mother Tammy Daybell's health and her use of colloidal silver, which Dreeke interprets as evidence of conditioning and possible depression. He argues that the children were groomed into Chad's belief system, likening it to a cult. Dreeke highlights the psychological manipulation involved and the tragic consequences of the family's entanglement in Chad and Lori's dangerous ideology.
