Today, I'm giving you another peek into my classroom, this time, to share tips for getting the most out of your Google Classroom. In this episode, you'll hear 15 better practices when using Google Classroom, from habits to technical tools. The full transcript is available on the show's blog post at: www.coolcatteacher.com/e708 Sponsor - Hāpara Google Classroom is great, but as education standards evolve, there are a few things lacking. Admin teams require better analytics. Students need a one-shot view of their tasks and want everything on one page. And as you know, teachers desperately need better monitoring capabilities. All of this is possible with the Hāpara Instructional Suite that organizes teaching and learning workflows in G Suite and Google Classroom seamlessly. Go to www.hapara.com/coolcatteacher to learn more about how Hāpara can help your school. In this episode, I give you a peek into my classroom. I take a topic that isn't super simple -- databases -- and show how I teach it with 2 simple projects, some game based learning, concrete examples, and how my students all master the topic in five days. While you might not be interested in Big Data or Databases, it is part of your student's future and so it is good to be introduced to the topic. Of interest to most of you, however, will be how I plan lessons. I design ahead for common mistakes, use concrete examples, use formative assessment and don't test but have mastery from all my students. This may sound impossible but it can be done. I hope this helps and encourages you and it also helps show how I reach kids who are at home as well. www.coolcatteacher.com/e706 Sponsor: Planboard & Chalk As we prepare to teach in a blended or distance learning environment, a rock-solid lesson planner is a must. I use a free program called Planboard for my lesson planning. My school uses Planboard with Chalk.com’s curriculum planning tool. This powerful tool links with standards -- and gives us the ability to do some timesaving, efficient reporting and tracking. The best thing about Planboard is I can plan my lessons anywhere - on my Mac, PC or iPad. Wherever I work, my lesson plans are with me. And as I said, Planboard is FREE for teachers. I hope you’ll check out Planboard now! Vicki Davis - Bio Vicki Davis is a classroom teacher and an Instructional Technology Director. She blogs at the Cool Cat Teacher Blog and hosts this podcast. This past year, I turned 50, lost 50 pounds, and ran a half marathon. So much has happened recently. Challenges, ups and downs, and joys. We all have them and so do I. However, the discipline to lose the weight and to run 19.3 miles in 2 days has prepared me for this time in which we live. Schools spend time, resources, and focus on security. Now, that security is moving online. What was once relegated to the IT department is now everybody's business. In today's show, I share four security issues that are on my mind. First, video conferencing security. Second, encouraging parents to conduct a security audit in the content management or learning management system you are using. Third, I talk about increasing awareness of social media manipulation by countries. Finally, I share what I think will be the next attempt to steal information from your students and teachers through spearphishing. Do you realize just how important you are as a teacher? Sometimes people say, “Thank you for all you do” but do they really understand just what I do? I heard this story several years a go from someone dear to me that completely transformed my life and understanding about how remarkable we teachers truly are. My name is Vicki Davis. I am best known for blogging at the Cool Cat Teacher Blog and for my sharing on Twitter where I have 136,741 Twitter as of the day I released this show. I previously hosted the show Every Classroom Matters. In this first episode of the 10 Minute Teacher Show, I’m sharing a story that gets to the heart of who we teachers are. I’ll also share my vision for this show and what you can expect to find every day. The idea behind the 10 Minute Teacher Show is simple: 5-days a week you’ll receive something helpful, informative, or inspiring that you can listen to in less than ten minutes. You’ll hear from the best in the education and get inspired to improve your classroom. In a day when we hear so much negative, this is something I can contribute to the mix that is positive and encouraging. But don’t expect the same thing every day! Each day has a theme! You’ll get: Motivation Mondays with ideas and inspiration to start your week. Tech tool Tuesday with ideas for how to use a technology tool just a little bit better. Wildcard Wednesday is when I share fun, exciting projects from teachers around the world. You’ll find yourself inspired not only by the projects but by the remarkable attitude of the teachers sharing them. - On Thought Leader Thursday you’ll hear from researchers and thought leaders about the big picture trends and learn how to apply them in your classroom today. 5 Idea Friday carries forward a popular idea from my newsletter (see www.coolcatteacher.com/newsletter) to give you five ideas you can apply right now in your classroom. This is a perfect episode to listen to while you’re writing out your lesson plans or co-planning with your teachers. Plus, I’m pulling out all the links and the transcript for you. A full transcript of this show and the show notes are available at www.coolcatteacher.com/podcast as well as details on this month’s giveaway contest to win a MakerBot mini replicator 3D! I use this printer in my classroom and love it! Finally, to celebrate the launch, I’m hosting lots of giveaways for books, software, and technology. The best in the business have partnered with me to make the launch of the 10 Minute Teacher extra special for all of you teachers out there. I’m Vicki Davis, the Cool Cat Teacher, and I’m here to help all of you K-12 teachers out there understand just how remarkable you are and to help you be even more remarkable. Let’s enjoy this journey together!
