An Interesting Interview with My Principal: Meet Jonathan Dyal

This episode of The 10 Minute Teacher was a lot of fun. Not only did I get to interview my principal, Jonathan Dyal, but my film class, the "Sherwood Showstoppers," filmed the interview. (I'm so proud of how much they are learning!) After a tweet I sent out in October 2023, George Couros and Allyson Apsey invited me to write a chapter about Jonathan in their book What Makes a Great Principal: The Five Pillars of Effective Leadership out this year. (You can listen to my earlier interview with George about what truly makes a great principal and the five pillars shared in the book.) Principal Dyal shares his philosophy of walking the halls frequently to stay connected with teachers and students, emphasizing his proactive rather than reactive philosophy. We talked about his strategies to build trust with teachers and how he uses observations positively. (I like his philosophy of observations; that is what the tweet was about in the first place.) He also discusses how he builds positive relationships with students in a way that improves student culture. This is a unique interview in that I see this firsthand and know the positive results it has when principals leave their offices, walk the halls, and spend time in classrooms. This approach is powerful, and it works! Show notes and transcript: https://www.coolcatteacher.com/e866 Disclosure of Material Connection: This episode includes some affiliate links. Tom Mullaney talks about concerns with: The Eliza effect—where people attribute human characteristics such as trust and credibility to text-generating computers—can be dangerous when combined with the biases and inaccuracies inherent in large language models. It is vital for educators to understand this as we talk about AI with students. There are concerns about using AI as "guest speakers" even for something seemingly "harmless" like "the water cycle." Concerns with humanizing AI. Discussing the "On the Dangers of Stochastic Parrots" paper by Dr. Emily M. Bender et all which discusses the ethical issues and harms of large language models, including bias and environmental racism. Debunking the myth that AI will have values and beliefs. Practical applications of AI in the classroom The challenges of citing generative AI in the classroom. Why it is vital to teach about AI's ethical implications and encourage critical thinking with the use of AI in the classroom. In a world constantly demanding excellence and innovation, it is easy to overlook a fundamental truth: the way we treat each other has profound implications on our productivity, motivation, and overall well-being. So many educators juggle dual responsibilities of nurturing young minds and meeting their own family's needs. This balance is particularly challenging for many women in education. Creating environments where everyone is valued is vital to strengthening our schools. Dr. Tracee Perryman, author of Elevating Women Leaders: Stories of Strength, Survival, and Success, discusses the importance of understanding and addressing women's unique needs and motivations. Interview With Daniel PackardPermanent Anxiety Solutions: Living Without Anxiety#Anxiety #PermanentAnxietySolutions #DanielPackardHi, and welcome to the show!On today's show I have the pleasure of welcoming founder and CEO of Permanent Anxiety Solutions Mr. Daniel Packard to talk about anxiety and how his organization has engineered a solution that helps thousands of people overcome this often debilitating disorder.Daniel Packard is a U.C. Berkeley Mechanical Engineer and CEO of Permanent Anxiety Solutions whose research company engineered the world's only permanent anxiety solution program where you only pay at the end of the program, once you have clear, measurable results.Daniel's passion for inventing and results came from his father. As a child growing up in Berkeley, CA, Daniel's father (who was a scientist and inventor) told a 10 year old Daniel two things that stuck with him for the rest of his life. His dad told him 'If something isn't working, invent something better.'  And 'If you want to really make people's lives better...results matter.'After staying in an abusive relationship too long, Daniel ended up with severe anxiety and PTSD. After spending 10 years and $100,000 trying to solve his anxiety he learned that a trillion dollars is spent globally on mental health, but not getting people in pain permanent results. Remembering what his dad told him, that 'results matter' and because he was trained in engineering school to know how to engineer solutions to complex problems, Daniel took a stand against the mental health industry and started his own research company with the goal to see if it was possible to reverse engineer a process from scratch that could solve anxiety permanently in a short period of time.Daniel and his team were not therapists or doctors or psychologists.  They were not traditional experts, they were outsiders. Because they were outsiders they were open to discovering what the experts had missed. Daniel and his team made the huge breakthrough discovery that even though the experts say anxiety is a problem of the mind, the research revealed anxiety is actually a problem of the body.Based on this discovery Daniel and his team spent a total of 8 years, working with over 3000 people (from 5 continents) to develop, test and perfect an innovative 6-week program that in just 6 weeks solves all forms of anxiety permanently with an industry leading 90% success rate. This 6-week program called Nervous System Reset has helped hundreds of individual clients but also over 3000 people at over 300 companies and universities all over the world. Including the South African government which asked to make Nervous System Reset a part of the national mental health curriculum.Based on his mission to take a stand against the mental health industry which takes people's money and doesn't deliver permanent results, people who join Nervous System Reset only pay at the end of the process once they have clear, measurable and permanent results.  Daniel's company is the only one in the world to offer a permanent anxiety solution with backed up results. This is because Daniel passionately believes what his dad told him years ago, which is that if you really want to make people's lives better...results matter. To learn more about the topics discussed, contact Daniel directly, or to access Daniel's complimentary 45 minute training to learn an innovative technique for feeling less anxious, click the link below.Disclosure of Material Connection: This is a “sponsored post.” My Future Business is disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255: “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.”

ViAs we start this year, each of us is in different circumstances. I rebel against anyone with a "one size fits all" plan that works for everybody. Each of us has a different approach to life and planning. As I do my planning, I spend time learning from others. You can also plan your year in a new way as I share what I do. Over the past twenty years, I've created an annual planning system that works well for me. For the first time, I've put together a podcast sharing how I plan my year, along with some free forms you can use to plan your year. In this podcast, I include 28+ questions I ask myself each year. How I used two one-page forms to review last year, and I plan to change everything this year. A "time budgeting" spreadsheet that helps me make a big-picture time budget for the year. I also describe how I modify and improve my plan for the year as I grapple with life's hard questions. You can download these forms at www.coolcatteacher.com/annualplan. I will also send these to subscribers in my following newsletter after the release of this show. Show Sponsor: Edge U Badges - Edge U Badges from Forward Edge is a fantastic micro credentialing program for teachers, administrators, and school staff. In this program, you can earn contact hours or graduate credit. With the ISTE Seal of Alignment, this program is approved by many districts as a flexible, personalized way for teachers to learn and grow. They will work with you to help your district accept your transcript for licensure renewal hours. Edge U Badges has former teachers review every single badge within 1-3 business days of submission, and no badge is ever denied without very specific feedback on what you can do to resubmit successfully or positive feedback on successful submissions. This is a program that I'm reviewing for my own renewal that comes up this year and I'm excited about their micro-credentialing system, which is why I'm recommending it to you!  Use the code COOLCAT for $20 off a premium account.   Disclosure of Material Connection: This is a “sponsored podcast episode.” The company who sponsored it compensated me via cash payment, gift, or something else of value to include a reference to their product.
