This episode is sponsored by Piano. Check out the new report from The Rebooting and Piano that examines how revenue leaders at publishers are taking a "total monetization" approach.Deirdre Lester is no stranger to how sports brands can influence culture. She served for four years as the CRO at Barstool as it grew well beyond its roots in sports banter to develop several revenue streams. At Teton Ridge, Deirdre sees a similar opportunity in the niche of Western sports like rodeo. Teton Ridge is betting big on Western sports and lifestyle — acquiring The Cowboy Channel, building original programming around rodeo, and elevating events like the American Rodeo into marquee sports properties. It's part media company, part sports IP owner, and part entertainment studio, with the aim of modernizing a tradition-rich category while keeping its authenticity.Deirdre and I talk about what it takes to grow in a time of constant industry change, and why she believes Western sports are not just having a cultural moment, but building into a lasting movement.
Herein we talk about the reboot, and then get down to the important business of discussing some pithy, useful GM tips.

Tucker Carlson has made headlines this week after escalating a major feud with President Donald Trump, as reported by AOL, following Carlson's sharp criticism of Trump's recent support for Israeli military actions in Iran. In his latest newsletter, Carlson accused Trump of being “complicit” in the deadly strikes, arguing that years of arming Israel placed the former president at the center of those events. Trump quickly fired back to reporters, dismissing Carlson's influence and saying, “no one is paying attention to the former Fox News host or his concerns about Israel's military action in Iran.” Trump challenged Carlson to get his own television network if he wants to be heard by a wider audience.Carlson's newsletters and social media channels continue to drive conversation on the American right, especially on foreign policy, where he positions himself in direct opposition to the neoconservative establishment. Responsible Statecraft highlights how Carlson has openly feuded with conservative commentator Mark Levin over Iran, accusing Levin of trying to push the U.S. into another Middle East conflict. Carlson's opposition to foreign military interventions has become a defining feature of his messaging, and his posts about Levin's lobbying against Iran have reached millions online, underscoring his continued ability to shape debate in Republican and populist circles. In terms of his current ventures, The Rebooting reports that Carlson has leaned fully into alternative media, bypassing institutional news outlets to build a parallel media infrastructure online. He's been using his highly followed platforms to promote not only his political commentary but also a lineup of sponsor-driven content, ranging from tobacco alternatives to prepper kits and various direct-to-consumer products, reflecting a business model increasingly common among right-leaning independent media figures. Carlson is also known for both interviewing and being interviewed by influencers from across the political spectrum, further cementing his role as a central figure in the new populist information landscape.Reactions to Carlson remain polarized. Supporters praise his anti-establishment stances and willingness to challenge Republican orthodoxy, while critics, including traditional conservatives and Trump loyalists, view his attacks on neoconservatives and on Trump's foreign policy as divisive. The ongoing public debate between Carlson, Trump, and right-wing figures like Mark Levin illustrates how deep the internal divisions have become within conservative media and politics. No significant legal actions or new professional troubles involving Carlson have surfaced in the past few days. However, the broader implications of his feud with Trump and his increasing isolation from both the mainstream right and his former Fox News colleagues suggest that Carlson's influence—while substantial in certain online communities—may be growing more niche, even as it remains fiery and impactful. Thanks for listening to the Tucker Carlson News Tracker podcast. Shin Yu Pai was already a published poet and museologist when she entered a contest by the Pacific Northwest's National Public Radio to pitch an idea for a new podcast that focused on Asian Americans. Around seventy people submitted concepts, but NPR picked Shin Yu's. That propelled her into the very formulaic world of NPR podcasts. She learned quickly, and her show became a huge hit in that region. But after three years, she was told that it had come to an end. Shin Yu found ways to identify and process her grief, and then decided to reboot her podcast with the help of an independent production company. But now, unfettered by NPR's way of doing things, Shin Yu is bringing much more of her own voice and perspective to Ten Thousand Things, the award-winning podcast about modern-day artifacts of Asian American life.

Wing Vasiksiri, investor and ecosystem builder, returns to unpack the recent political upheaval in Thailand, the shifting startup landscape, and how these dynamics intersect. He and Jeremy Au explore the Prime Minister's suspension, the ripple effects of leaked diplomacy, and what these events signal for foreign investment and local sentiment. They also discuss the country's cannabis policy reversal, new crypto tax breaks, and the comeback of early-stage incubation. Wing introduces “Project Thailand,” a new public resource and investor-backed report aiming to support Thai founders by mapping out the entire ecosystem. Their discussion offers a real-time pulse check on Thailand's path toward stability, growth, and tech-driven innovation. 00:22 PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra suspended after leaked audio call with Cambodia's president: The clip revealed her use of informal language and criticism of Thailand's military, which sparked a political backlash. Her comments raised concerns over national loyalty, leading to her suspension and a cabinet reshuffle that further destabilized the coalition government. 09:45 Seven Thai PMs in ten years erode investor confidence and stall economic reform: The pattern of court removals, protests, and reshuffled coalitions makes it harder for Thailand to project long-term policy stability. Investors hesitate to back sectors like infrastructure and data centers, where long planning cycles are incompatible with unpredictable governance. 15:10 Thailand cuts capital gains and crypto taxes to zero from 2025 to 2030: In contrast to Singapore's stricter stance, this move signals a bid to attract crypto entrepreneurs and capital inflows. Wing suggests the tax break may position Thailand as a regional hub for blockchain innovation, while Singapore's ban on token sales drives founders elsewhere. 19:01 Recreational cannabis re-criminalized despite 18,000 dispensaries nationwide: The sudden policy reversal now requires medical prescriptions for purchase and forces dispensaries to register under stricter controls. Wing explains how this ties to shifting political coalitions—particularly the exit of pro-cannabis Bhumjaithai—and hints that further policy flip-flops could follow. 24:07 Wing launches Project Thailand and updates startup report with MVP: The open-access Notion resource maps investors, accelerators, universities, and service providers to help Thai founders navigate the ecosystem. The new report shifts from data-heavy charts to a stakeholder-based framework, offering specific ideas for universities, corporates, and government bodies to strengthen startup formation. In 1979, one of two nuclear reactors at the Three Mile Island power plant near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, suffered a partial meltdown. The second reactor was shut down 40 years later for economic reasons. Now, work is underway to restart that second reactor to produce electricity for a single customer, Microsoft. To learn what it takes to restart and ensure the safety of a nuclear power plant, and to explore the role of nuclear energy in a mix of renewable resources, we've invited back Dr. Elmer Lewis, professor emeritus of mechanical engineering at Northwestern University. Dr. Lewis is the author of the books “Nuclear Power Reactor Safety” and “Fundamentals of Nuclear Reactor Physics,” and he will soon publish his latest book, “Renewables or Nuclear, Which Should Lead in Curbing Climate Change?”

Estonia is a nation of 1.3 million people, situated in a dangerous neighborhood on the Baltic Sea. It gained its independence early in the 20th century, only for the Soviets to take the country by force. Estonia gained its independence again in 1991, and has since become one of the most digital-native countries in the world. How did a nation with a feared secret police become so open to the government digitizing data on every one of its citizens? And why did other former Soviet Republics not follow in the same way? Those questions and more are at the center of Joel Burke's new book, “Rebooting a Nation: The Incredible Rise of Estonia, E-Government and the Startup Revolution.” The nation has outperformed across the board, and Joel takes a full look at the unique institutions and cultures that led to such success.Joining alongside host Danny Crichton and Riskgaming director of programming Laurence Pevsner, the three talk about the early years of Estonia's existence, why Skype was such a watershed for the nation, why privacy has a very different meaning in Estonia than elsewhere, why eGovernment can actually be even more private than our existing data systems in the United States, and finally, why Estonia's government has so deeply embraced the private sector.

What if trauma isn't just in your head, but in your cells, your gut, your immune system? In this electrifying conversation, Jerome Myers is joined by Dr. Don Wood, the founder of the Inspired Performance Institute and creator of TIPP, a neuroscience-based program for trauma resolution. What begins as a deeply personal story about saving his daughter's life turns into a profound revelation: most of what we treat with pills could be solved by healing the mind. If you've ever been told to just “manage” your anxiety, stress, or diagnosis, this episode is your wake-up call. [00:00 – 12:00] Trauma Is the Root, Not the Symptom “Medication is like giving tissue for a runny nose, what caused it?” Trauma often underlies anxiety, addiction, and even autoimmune disease Dr. Wood's daughter's Crohn's and lung disorder stemmed from childhood trauma, not just biology [12:01 – 22:00] The Brain Isn't Broken, It's Protecting You The subconscious runs 95% of your daily life and doesn't understand time Emotional triggers (or “activations”) are unresolved calls for action “Anxiety is your mind trying to solve something from years ago, now.” [22:01 – 32:00] The Science of Reprocessing Memory Traumatic memories are stored in high-def; the solution is to reduce their intensity “We don't erase memory, we reclassify it. So your brain sees it as past, not present.” Healing isn't about forgetting; it's about removing emotional dysregulation [32:01 – 42:00] It's Not Just About Therapy, It's About Resetting Traditional therapy relieves the trauma; TIPP reprocesses it safely and quickly "I don't need the whole story, just the trailer.” The mind must feel safe before it can heal [42:01 – 49:00] Resilience is Built on Safety, Not Hardship “You don't toughen a boxer by beating him before the fight.” A stable home builds resilience; trauma erodes it before life begins The system needs to feel safe to learn, grow, and repair [49:01 – End] Why He Didn't Stop After Saving His Daughter “We could've stopped. But we felt a calling.” Dr. Wood uses TIPP to help veterans, athletes, CEOs, and kids “Your mind and body are designed to heal. Trauma just gets in the way.” Key Quotes: “The mind and body are designed to heal. What's interfering with it—in most cases, at least 80%—is unresolved trauma.” - Dr. Don Wood “You can't sabotage yourself. Your brain's a survival brain. It's protecting you.” - Dr. Don Wood Connect with Dr. Smith! Website: http://www.inspiredperformanceinstitute.com/ LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/drdonwoodphd Ready for your next chapter? The media industry has spent the last decade talking about its own decline — but where is it actually headed? This week on Mixed Signals, Ben kicks off a special three-part crossover with Peter Kafka of Channels and Brian Morrissey of The Rebooting. In part one of the conversation, the three discuss the future of media bundles, why everyone seems to be canceling and re-subscribing to streaming services, and whether Substack's business model is sustainable. They also talk about selling ads as a solo operator, the false nostalgia for cable, and whether journalism is better — or just lonelier — outside of institutions. To hear parts two and three of the conversation, head to Channels and The Rebooting. What can we learn from Estonia? It's not a question you hear often — the nation of under two million residents doesn't mean much to many. But for good governance advocates, it's long been a touchpoint for its “e-government” model. The New Yorker wrote in 2017 that, “apart from transfers of physical property, such as buying a house, all bureaucratic processes can be done online.” Wired called Estonia “the world's most digitally advanced society.” On its “e-Estonia” site, the country itself brags, in a mod font, “We have built a digital society and we can show you how.”The Estonian model has a lot going for it from the perspective of a citizen. For example: Taxes take a few minutes to file, you can see every time the government looks at your data, and you never have to give the government a piece of information more than once. And it makes governance easier: the bureaucracy is leaner, information is shared across agencies, and data is more secure. But how much of this model could be adopted here in the US, or in the rest of the West? And how much is reliant on a cultural and societal context we just don't have here? To get answers, I talked to Joel Burke, author of the new book Rebooting a Nation: The Incredible Rise of Estonia, E-Government and the Startup Revolution. Joel is an American who worked with the Estonian government, and I learned a lot from his book. For the full transcript of this conversation and others, visit www.statecraft.pub. Rebooting Tech Culture: How to Ignite Innovation and Build Organizations Where Everyone Can Thrive by Telle Whitney Amazon.com Drive a more innovative, inclusive culture that welcomes all talent. Many technology leaders believe in having more women and people of color in technical and leadership positions throughout their organizations. In truth, though, they just fall back on exclusionary behaviors, like revering the typically male "lone genius" who is essential to their innovative future. Why the disconnect? According to Telle Whitney, cofounder of the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing, while tech leaders may want to talk about inclusivity, few actually change their cultures to dismantle the unwelcoming environment, fearful that doing so will compromise innovation. Women and people of color pay the price, facing exclusive and even hostile workplaces. They're held back from professional growth and, in many cases, choose to leave the industry altogether. But there is a solution. In Rebooting Tech Culture, Whitney argues that the same values at the heart of innovation—creativity, courage, confidence, curiosity, communication, and community—can also foster a culture that's welcoming to all employees. Drawing on more than fifty interviews with tech executives and a survey of a thousand people in tech, she shows how these "six Cs" can power real change in technology organizations, creating workplaces where anyone can be successful and where innovation thrives. Today, every company is a tech company. By understanding how to apply these values and reinvigorate their cultures, leaders will learn how to eliminate the behaviors holding their teams back from true belonging, growth, and innovation. About the author Telle Whitney is a senior executive leader, an entrepreneur, and a recognized advocate and expert on women and technology. She has over 30 years of leadership experience and was named one of Fast Company's Most Influential Women in Technology. She is a frequent speaker on the topic of Women and Technology. She is an accomplished technologist who spent twenty years in the semiconductor industry in Silicon Valley. Telle has been called “a pioneer for the promotion of women technologists” and “one of the most inspirational leaders I have ever known.”

The landscape for digital publishing is shifting. At the center of this is Google search, the backbone of the open web. Google's embrace of "AI mode" last week was a sign that it will overhaul its approach to search with vast implications for publishers. Earlier this month, I spoke with Dotdash Meredith CEO Neil Vogel for the keynote session at the Media Product Forum, an event put on in NYC by The Rebooting and WordPress VIP. Neil laid out the pragmatic playbook Dotdash Meredith is using to thrive in a shifting landscape.

#358 In this episode, Guy interviewed Adam Butler about his transformative journey with dimethyltryptamine (DMT) and other psychedelics. Adam shared his story of hitting rock bottom, battling alcoholism, and experiencing an awakening that transformed his life. They discussed the misconceptions about happiness being tied to external factors and how psychedelics helped Adam explore and confront his inner demons. Adam explained the unique aspects of DMT, its profound impact on mental health, and how it's different from other psychedelics. He also talked about his book, which serves as a guide to understanding and using DMT for personal growth and healing. The conversation delves into the broader implications of psychedelics for consciousness, mental health, and spiritual awakening, emphasizing the power of self-exploration and inner work. About Adam: Adam Butler is a psychedelic philosopher and passionate DMT psychonaut focusing on mental health, neuroplasticity, self-exploration, and the extreme limits of human potential and ability. Combining an academically trained intellect, empathetic heart, and life-hardening experiences, Adam has found his niche in helping others overcome the fear associated with PTSD, depression, sexual repression, and addiction. By incorporating psychedelic compounds with deep meditation, lucid dreaming, and tantric practices he has changed from being an over worked, over-weight, stressed-out alcoholic asshole into a balanced, healthy, and sober friend and mentor to many. I spoke with Anonymous Banker, an M&A advisor with a front-row view into the market for buying and selling digital media companies. Needless to say, it's a buyer's market.AB breaks down the market for digital publishing assets – broadly those with page-based models – into three types of buyers:HarvestersCAC jockeysVanity projects/rich person playthings“If you're a publisher with a mostly ad-supported site, odds are your business will be worth less next year than it is now,” he said. Deals are still getting done, but the buyers are different. These are no-name PE firms above ice cream shops in the outskirts of Miami. We go through the list, which ranges from Valnet to Static Media to Savage Ventures to Regent. The playbook is to buy undervalued media properties, slash costs, and milk the programmatic revenue with hyper-lean models that rudely dispense with the nostalgia of “when the going was good.”“Any content they invest in has to be ROI positive within 30 days,” AB said. “You'll never see them spend $20 million hoping advertisers show up. Those days are done.”Other topics we covered:How AI uncertainty is creating overhang that depresses valuations and makes long-term modeling nearly impossibleWhy the most resilient media businesses are lead-generation machines or conversion front-endsWe debate whether the Chernin Group content-to-commerce thesis was wrongHow Substack's recommendation engine is the most efficient user acquisition channel in mediaWhat kinds of content investors still believe in (hint: high-intent verticals, not general news)Check out The Rebooting's new media product research reportSign up for The Rebooting's Online Forum on May 21 at 1pmET featuring a case study on how Recurrent migrated its CMS across a portfolio of sites without disruption
What is now a San Francisco tourist hotspot was once a notorious prison for hardened criminals. Trump wants to turn back the clock and make Alcatraz into the isolated prison for the worst offenders that it once was. If that leaves, you scratching your head, some other things he said over the weekend will too. The president questioned whether he has to follow the constitution. He told the press he would not rule out taking Greenland by force and he says there will be a 100% tariff for foreign films in America. We will talk politics with author Jared Yates Sexton and iHeart TV and radio political analyst Gary Dietrich.
