Mike Ferguson in the Morning 12-19-24 Darrell Jones from the Herzog Foundation talks about how Christian schools around the country reacted to the tragedy in Madison, WI, along with school safety and security issues, school choice, and the Herzog Tomorrow Foundation. The Lion newsletter showcased a few Christian schools with exemplary safety standards in light of the Wisconsin shooting. One school is in the St. Louis area. Missouri school on leading edge of creating safe environment as Christian schools respond to Wisconsin shooting. Christian school leaders around the country were mostly calm following a deadly shooting at a Wisconsin Christian school Monday, saying it led them to pray and consider their own preparedness for such situations. In conversations with several school directors, The Lion learned of various security measures Christian schools have already implemented, including new, cutting-edge innovations. Westminster Christian Academy in Town & Country, Missouri, even monitors an anonymous tip line for students and provides wearable panic buttons for staff. The tip line has been in place since 2018, the year Tim DeWitt, a retired Air Force police officer, became the school’s head of security. Americans continue to support school choice post-election, surveys show. As lawmakers in many states gear up for new legislative sessions in January, polling once again found strong support for school choice measures among American voters. On Thursday, yes. every kid. released a new survey of 1,000 voters and school parents who broadly agreed about the need for more flexibility and parental rights in education. 54% of respondents believe the current K 12 system is too inflexible; 62% agree that more family control would benefit all students; 63% support universal access to public schools; 68% support open enrollment policies; 60% support education tax credits; 63% support education savings accounts (ESAs), a popular form of school choice; And 71% of the respondents who support ESAs also believe they should be universal and not limited by income or other factors. There's still time for Missouri taxpayers to redirect 50% of their Missouri tax liability to the Herzog Tomorrow Foundation so we can give more scholarships to students. Thornton Township Supervisor Tiffany Henyard was the only one to show up for a scheduled meeting of the board of trustees Tuesday night—with others saying they are worried for their own safety. The most notable difference at the Tuesday night meeting was that everyone entering the township building in South Holland had to go through security. It is because of lack of security that the trustees opted to not attend Tuesday night—leaving Henyard to make her own address about a variety of topics. Henyard entered the room to a nearly vacant board table. She gave the clerk a hug, but every other seat next to them was vacant. "Due to the fact that we do not have a quorum, there will not be an actual voting meeting," Henyard said. The reason the trustees did not show up, they argue, is due to meetings that have gotten out of control. "It was about to get physical," trustee Chris Gonzalez said of a recent meeting.

In this episode Gretta Fenner (Managing Director, Basel Institute on Governance) and Daniel Eriksson (CEO, Transparency International) talk to Liz Dávid-Barrett (Centre for the Study of Corruption) about the links between corruption and national security issues. The episode follows from the Munich Security Conference where Daniel and Gretta raised the issue of corruption as a key policy concern. The group discuss the new global context of heightened insecurity and the implications this has for those working to counter corruption. Liz also asks Daniel and Gretta about "strategic corruption", defined in the US Strategy on Countering Corruption as "when a government weaponizes corrupt practices as a tenet of its foreign policy". This is a term which has gained significant policy attention. It however raises questions as to whether using the term involves anti-corruption campaigners "picking sides" in this new context of global insecurity .

Follow Up 00:57 C2C Event Recently Justin was down at a 2gather event Google's Cloud headquarters near Moffett Field in Sunnyvale. So to those new listeners who heard Justin there and just couldn't get enough, welcome! We're happy to have you. Want to see what events are coming up, and hopefully near you? Check out the lineup here. General News 08:25 Why companies are leaving the cloud A recent study by Citrix, is saying that 25% of organizations in the UK have already moved half or more of their cloud-based workloads back to on-premises infrastructures. The survey questioned 350 IT leaders on their current approaches to cloud computing. 93% of them had been involved in a cloud repatriation project in the last three years. Surveyed said their reasons for moving from the Security Issues, High Project Expectations and unmet expectations, with most saying the cost was the biggest motivator, which definitely makes sense to us. In general this isn't my experience when talking to listeners, or folks at the recent C2C event; there's always a few companies that probably shouldn't have moved to the cloud in the first place, but those numbers don't pan out to us in who we're talking to. We're interested in listener feedback here – have any of you been involved in a repatriation project? 09:55 Ryan – “I think it’s kind of the same thing that happened in reverse a few years ago, where it’s like all the companies are moving to the cloud. The same reports were, you know, 50 % of companies are moving other entire workloads into the cloud. And now it’s sort of the pendulum swinging the other way.” AI is Going Great (or how ML Makes all Its Money) – ChatGPT gets Reveries 12:37 Memory and new controls for ChatGPT ChatGPT is adding a new “memory” feature; “remembering” allows you to ask the bot to remember things you have chatted about with ChatGPT in the past. So things like you love to travel, you have a daughter, etc.
Defense and veterans policies will play a role in the debate over who should serve as commander-in-chief.
