No doubt Sheep Dog contains important lessons, but is this Bluey at its most simplistic? (Context, text and subtext: Mums just need 20 minutes, dammit!) Kate and Mary wonder what needs more explaining, mullets or shearers (and wonder if there's cutting-room-floor tape of Lucky's Dad singing Click Go the Shears??), delight in the Wendy redemption arc, and get excited about new voice Emily Taheny (just as her genius array of characters on Mad As Hell disappear from Australian screens, sob!) Also, Mary's continued fangirling for Darren Hanlon (here's where it started for her), and all the animals on rotation at Gotta Be Done HQs. ++ Gotta Be Done is ex-journos and Melbourne mums Kate McMahon and Mary Bolling, as we deep-dive every Bluey episode, with plenty of detours into mama life, childhood memories, and everything else we're bingeing, too! Did you know that when Ludo Studio was developing early Bluey episodes, the animatics featured Darren Hanlon songs as holding scores? Gotta Be Done has never seen them (ahem, we'd love to!) but now Gympie's favourite folk troubadour has an official Bluey gig too - as the Alt Energy Dog in S3 episode Sheep Dog! Darren joins Mary in the Gotta Be Done wagon to talk Queensland's biggest cultural exports, little people's favourite songs, his love of Dave McCormack's band Custard, and how his guest role is already delivering playground cred. Also sneaking in are just a few hints of Darren's gorgeous tunes, including House, We All Cope in Different Ways, All These Things, Folk Insomnia, and Lapsed Catholic. Darren had a chat just before he launched his national tour, and ahead of his new album next year - thanks Daz! ++ Gotta Be Done is ex-journos and Melbourne mums Kate McMahon and Mary Bolling, as we deep-dive on every Bluey episode, with plenty of detours into mama life, childhood memories, and everything else we're bingeing, too! Darren Hanlon is a much loved Australian songwriter and musician. You might have seen him on stage if you've ever been to see Billy Bragg, The Violent Femmes, Courtney Barnet or The Lucksmiths. He's learnt a lot from his years of touring and encourages younger artists to find their comfortable space where they want to exist in the music industry. Darren has also received plenty of advice from older artists about how to calm his farm.Thank you to Uncle Jack Charles for the acknowledgement of country.Instagrammers! Kate and Cassie are joined this week by poet and music writer Mark Mordue, singer-songwriter Darren Hanlon and Music Show colleague Andrew Ford; and the books discussed are Taylor Jenkins Reid's Malibu Rising, Kate Sawyer's The Stranding and Helen Oyeyemi's Peaces - with a side serving of music on the page.
Julia speaks with nearly forgotten Australian folk singer Darren Hanlon, reading journal entries from their 2015 US tour with Courtney Barnett. Darren explains Australian terms like "whipper snipper," "school camp" and "schoolies week." A lot of what is said between them is lost in translation, as they struggle to communicate while coming from vastly different cultures and generations. Julia's energy and enthusiasm on this episode is somewhat low, and she will try to do better next time, but she would've been more prepared if Darren had gotten the time of their Zoom call correct.

Matt Hawkins is a Brisbane-based singer-songwriter, whose influences include Paul Kelly, The Lemonheads, The Simpletons, Darren Hanlon, Robert Forster and others. Having played in Brisbane bands for some time, in late 2019, he decided to go it alone! "Bridge of Stories", a song inspired by Brisbane author Trent Dalton's debut novel, 'Boy Swallows Universe', was released early 2020. "Never Too Far", a duet about a couple kept apart by an annoying global pandemic, co-written by Aleta Booth, is Matt's second single.

Seja talks to her guest Darren Hanlon after many scheduling conflicts. They firstly talk deportation and injuries, then about Darren’s childhood and how he started playing in a country/western style dance band at 15 and got kicked out for knee sliding whilst playing Johnny B. Goode. Darren chats about meeting Rik Mayall and Billy Bragg as a kid, to then going on to support Bragg for the first time by pretending to be his manager and showing up to the show on a whim with his guitar. They also talk lyric writing, guitar solos and recording in Nashville, Memphis and New Orleans. Darren’s strange show story is illustrated by Scott Edgar (Tripod) (@scodmanisfine) and can be seen on the HearSej instagram (@hearsejpodcast) or on the HearSej Facebook page.

Peter Reith was a member of John Howard's cabinet from 1996 to 2001. He served as Minister for Small Business, Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations and the Minister for Defence. He's perhaps best known for formulating the GST policy and his roles in the 1998 waterfront dispute and the "children overboard" scandal. Peter's just released The Reith Papers, an annotated collection of his diary entries during his time in government. Here we got to discuss (and occasionally lock horns over) the notion of humanising politicians, the recent Paris attacks, military action in the Middle East, Australia's approach to processing refugees and the role of unions in today's society. Comedian, writer and activist Aamer Rahman jokes about race and detention centres and terrorism and hip-hop and comic books and cultural appropriation. Formerly of the comedy duo Fear Of A Brown Planet (with previous guest Nazeem Hussain), he now tours his stand-up internationally being very funny and very on-point. Here Aamer articulates how the Adam Goodes controversy sums up the issues of Australia's race problem, how he views the impact of his work, cultural appropriation, Iggy Azalea, ethnic faces on TV, Bill Maher, Cornel West and political correctness in comedy. Episode 7 features interviews with two pinball-loving musicians: Australian singer/songwriter Darren Hanlon, and Ed Robertson of the Barenaked Ladies! Both Ed and Darren were touring through Seattle in the same week, and each graciously made the time to sit down with us and talk about their personal pinball histories. And because this is an all-audio experience, we just had to share some of their music with you! Pardon the varying sound quality of the interviews -- we're making it up with four great songs. Hope you enjoy them as much as we do!

Darren Hanlon - Urban folk cornerstone, funny and hearfelt, on travelling the world and settling down at the same time Darren Hanlon had toured the world for a decade and he was looking at recording his next album. "I got disheartened with the whole music process where you record an album and you tour it for three years. It felt like the factory line model of music." In his pocket was a much-thumbed New Yorker article about an expert of field recording who recorded what he found as he travelled. The idea resonated. "I had a plan. The plan was to have no plan." The album's on its way, with a book reflecting on its creation. To tide you over until the release, tentatively announced for February 2015, we have a sterling interview for you. We talk about the Merri River Lungfish, his time living among the stacks at the Blue Guitar book shop, forcing (future guest) Mick Thomas to watch the Goonies, finding the original indigenous Slim Dusty, the success that was Slagfest, and the unexpected success of Elbows in Latvia.
