CW: This episode contains discussions of alcoholism and cinematic violence including animal cruelty. The writer, comedian and musician Patrick Marlborough returns to the podcast from Perth, WA to discuss Wake in Fright (1971), the landmark Australian film by the late Canadian director Ted Kotcheff. One of only two films to be shown twice in the history of the Cannes Film Festival, and influential in shaping both the Australian New Wave and Ozploitation genres, Wake in Fright was acclaimed around the world but outraged local audiences with its brutal and merciless depiction of Australian toxic masculinity, violence, and alcoholism.Patrick gives us some insight on how Wake in Fright captures some of the ugliest aspects of the Australian national character, and we discuss how Kotcheff's Canadian-ness was an asset for his outsider's view of this world, the amazing supporting performance by Aussie comic screen icon Chips Rafferty in his final role, and how this great film was nearly lost forever. This Christmas movie is devoid of all comfort & joy, as we follow an English teacher who loses all his money gambling and is forced to survive in an unforgiving small town in the outback with aggressively friendly and generous locals. Let it FLOW: Wir reden über Bong John-hos MICKEY 17. Adieu. Rocket Beans wird unterstützt von Ben and Jerry's & fritz-kola Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Welcome to the show Jason Lytle from Grandaddy who even though isnt a horror fanatic has chosen a film with one of the most horrific scenes in it ever filmed, to my mind. Ted Kotcheff's Wake In Fright. Australia is huge, you can get lost, both physically and mentally.Grandaddy Jason Lytle
"Lived it, breathed it, bled it". Ok Dr. Anna Broinowski. Filmmaker, satirist, educator, documentarian-cum-influencer and pop-truth sceptic, she's in the studio. We celebrate the release of her memoir 'Datsun Angel' by putting everyone in the hot seat. Sydney, to North Korea, to New York, to Tokyo, back to Sydney University and ultimately to Canberra - we talk subjects as vehicles, driving as site of debate, ugly A*stralian guys, Jen's nerves, vocabulary, delivering film masters on a skateboard, and how creativity is mothering. So many parallel mothers. Taste is vulnerability. One execrable hazing dorm. Datsun Angel is available in soft back through Hachette described as a Wake In Fright for Chicks. Ted Kotcheff's 1971 dust-covered, sweat-drenched Aussie Christmas thriller, WAKE IN FRIGHT, is our feature presentation this week. Kitty Green's new ROYAL HOTEL takes the rural Australian bar-culture setting of 1971's WAKE IN FRIGHT and explores how placing two young women in the role of outsider changes the threat level. We start this week by parsing the film's micro- and mega-aggressions, and whether those inflicting them are capital-B Bad men, or just regular men wrapped up in bad power dynamics. Then we bring WAKE IN FRIGHT back in to consider how both films are on some level about the intertwined desires for identity and acceptance, as well as alcohol's deleterious effect on both. Kitty Green's new THE ROYAL HOTEL follows two women stranded amid the oppressive masculinity of a rough-and-tumble Australian mining town, a purposeful gender subversion of Ted Kotcheff's 1971 Australian cult classic WAKE IN FRIGHT. We begin our two-week journey through the fringes of civilization with a trip to WAKE IN FRIGHT's “the Yabba” to discuss how the film's more harrowing elements, including its infamous kangaroo hunt, play in a context of sheer lawlessness, debate whether it feels like a representative Australian film, and try to decipher the strange allure of “two up.” And in Feedback, we consider a couple of listener-submitted contenders for our informal and always-expanding list of the greatest sci-fi of the 21st century. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about WAKE IN FRIGHT, THE ROYAL HOTEL, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. On this episode, Andrew talks with the filmmakers behind one of the most anxiety provoking films of the year: Birdeater. Jack Clark and Jim Weir are co-directors, with Jack writing the script for this story about a bachelor party that takes horrifying and wild turns. Part thriller, part character piece, always intense, Birdeater is a film that owes its existence to the legacy of the classic Aussie film: Wake in Fright. In the following discussion, Jack and Jim talk about the influence of Wake in Fright on their film, while also touching on their desire to explore modern masculinity. The pair also talk about the troubles they faced in making the film, and the genuine possibility that they might not have been able to finish production on it. There's a truly unsettling nature to Birdeater, yet it's delivered in a masterfully captivating manner. Birdeater screens at the Melbourne International Film Festival on August 12, 14, and 16, before heading to Cinefest Oz on Saturday 2 September. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

"Good heavens! It's Evans!" Jon Auty from Behind The Stunts returns this week to discuss the 1972 fish-out-of-water comedy film Sunstruck, starring Harry Secombe as Welsh schoolteacher Stanley Evans. His romantic intentions towards a colleague stymied by a beefier rival, Stanley sees a poster offering jobs to British schoolteachers in New South Wales. Stanley applies, imagining a life of sun, sea and Sheilas, but reality brings him back to earth with a bump. Posted to remote Kookaburra Springs Stanley soon discovers that a new life Down Under is not all it's cracked up to be, with irritants including mozzie bites, beer-swilling barflies and an obnoxious child called Stevie... however, a burgeoning romance and the chance to win a national schools singing competition restores Stanley's sense of purpose. It's an interesting and gently humorous film featuring some fine Australian acting talent and Secombe acquits himself well in a rare leading role. Jon and Tyler have a lot of fun talking about it - we decide it definitely ISN'T suitable as part of a double bill with Wake In Fright (1971) - tip the hat to Network DVD (RIP) & remember the time that Baldrick met John Wayne. ALSO: LISTENERS' QUESTIONS! Feedback from listeners is always important and the opportunity to interact is something we at Goon Pod Towers are keen to do as much as possible! A few hours before recording the Sunstruck episode Tyler asked people on social media if they had any questions about the podcast, the Goons or comedy in general. There was a good response and unfortunately not enough time to answer everybody but maybe in the future we'll do an entire show of listeners' questions - let's see how this goes down. Extreme Animal Cruelty Content Warning: this movie contains one of the single most despicable scenes of actual violence against animals either of us have likely ever seen in cinema. Kangaroos are shown being shot, struggling to escape, and slowly, painfully dying. There is a shot of a pile of severed kangaroo upper torsos that the camera lingers on. Do not watch this movie if that is the kind of thing that will upset. It upset John and it upset Josh. It's a really good movie in all respects, other than the depiction of inexcusable animal cruelty. Yes, we know the arguments about why it was a good thing, or whatever. When not discussing that element, we have a good ol' time talking about this lost film, which some might call the greatest Ozploitation movie of all time. John and Josh disagree about whether or not this qualifies as a “horror movie,” which leads to one of (but not THE) our most disparate rating results in our show's history. I know you concerns yourselves with that sort of thing, and even read this at all.
Duncan and Lex have known each other for years, and when it comes to movie taste, they think they know each other pretty well. Didn't I Blow Your Mind This Time puts them to the test. Each episode one picks a film that the other hasn't seen in the hopes of blowing their mind.In this first episode, Duncan kicks off Season 1 with a forgotten cult classic from 1971... Wake In Fright, directed by Ted Kotcheff (North Dallas Forty, First Blood). Rescued and remastered in the '00s, this harrowing story of one man's descent into hell (aka the Australian Outback) has gained new appreciation in the last decade. For Lex, it had stayed on his "I'll Get To It One Day" list for way too long. Will this boozy, brawly, kangaroo-killin' nightmare flip Lex's lid? Duncan sure as hell hopes so, mates... We avoided it for years, but it's time to get acquainted with Taylor Lautner. So let's be honest: did NEW MOON confirm every negative preconception we had about the third wheel in the Twilight love story? Or were we surprised by how much he added to the saga? And what do we make of Edward's puzzling disappearance from most of the movie? Are we excited to watch ECLIPSE? Warning: Welp we did it twice in a row and we didn't even realize it. We're so sorry… but, horror!! Cody unknowingly selected a film of ill-repute (but wide acclaim) from the poisonous, everything-will-kill-you-including-the-booze-land of Australia, 1971's WAKE IN FRIGHT. The film, while not as wildly torturous as Cannibal Holocaust, still features a scene about 4/5ths of the way through wherein many kangaroos are hunted and killed. The filmmakers claim that this was filmed on an already established and legal hunt (the kangaroos are apparently like deer in America, requiring a hunting season) but that still doesn't make the events portrayed any less shocking. Not to mention one particular moment where a character literally fights and kills a kangaroo with his hands and I struggle to see the ways in which that falls under the legal claims the film makes but what have you… The film is wild and very interesting and we have some very (we think) interesting things to say about it. But sweet god… there is only beer in Australia. So tune in for more of your typical shenanigans, including the introduction to Cody's burgeoning excitement over having seen THE NORTHMAN, and stay for our in depth talk of some more challenging horror! 00:00 - 22:00ish Intros – Discrepancies between men's and women's pleasure products during the week we learned that Roe v. Wade was likely fucked (fuck you, Republicans), Cody's pre-exhaltation at the alter of The Northman (stay tuned for this episodes long series where we wait for Austin to go see the flick), Curtis talks about the Dwayne Johnson that he used to love, and Vin Diesel and his reign over the Fast franchise. 22:00ish - 51:00ish What we watched this week: The Omen (1976), The Conjuring 2, Hereditary, Martyrs (2008), Livid, Mayhem, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, The Batman (yes, again for Curtis and FIVE MORE TIMES FOR LUCAS), THE NORTHMAN (twice for three of us), The Survivor, Jackass Forever (Austin & his dad), The Night House, The Brood, The King's Man, Death on the Nile, In the Tall Grass, The Gift (2015), and Lethal Weapon. 51:00ish - 1:43:00ish - WAKE IN FRIGHT 1:43:00ish - End - What's our next movie?

Brush up on your two-up and watch out for them kangaroos (oh, God, the kangaroos!) because we're heading Down Under to discuss Ted Kotcheff's famed "lost film" Wake in Fright (1971)! Joining us are A Nightmare on Fierce Street co-hosts Sharai Bohannon and Trent Reese!First thing's first: this film has a 10-minute-long sequence featuring Cannibal Holocaust levels of real-life animal violence (it's the kangaroos), so major content warning for that. Consider yourself warned.Anyway, after a brief musical theatre tangent, we discuss the film's journey from novel to film to lost film to restored masterpiece before going all-in on its portrayal of masculinity. It all leads up to a discussion of a gay sex scene that, quite frankly, we were shocked to see!Plus, shirtless Donald Pleasence (nips o' plenty), one spicy hotel receptionist, a very serious conversation about Bloody Marys and (the ultimate question) is Janette a slut? Would you expect anything less from the director of Weekend at Bernie's?Questions? Comments? Snark? The 1970s going into the early 1980s are generally regarded as a purple patch of Australian cinema – The Australian New Wave. Film makers had financial support. Audiences wanted to see their own backyard on the big screen (before bloody cultural cringe set in again). There were films that focused on T&A and machismo, there were a lot of period pieces, and there were tales of crime. The films weren't always successful, but there was a spirit about them that's still exciting. Audiences recognised themselves in film (although they denied it when Wake In Fright came out). So, where does Oz: A Rock 'n; Roll Road Movie (aka 20th Century Oz) fit in? Where does an adaptation of The Wizard of Oz that sees Dorothy as a groupie who dreams she's on a highway headed for the big city to see a concert featuring The Wizard with a surfer, a mechanic and a biker as her company actually stand in the canon of local 70s cinema?Welcome to Love That Album episode 149.Why am I starting the blurb for a music discussion podcast with a description about movies? Especially in reference to a film that's already been discussed on the See Hear Podcast (episode 33...hint hint)Well, the film has a soundtrack, you see......Previous LTA interview subject Sarah Carroll and her son George Carroll Wilson are both huge fans of the film. I invited them onto the show to talk about the soundtrack. Of course, you can't really discuss a soundtrack without reference to the film itself. We also had a lengthy discussion about the Australian music scene of the period, the history behind the key players involved with the music and the film (Ross Wilson and Chris Lofven), and of course the music itself and how it worked in the context of the story.BUT WAIT....THERE'S MORE.....One of the exciting thing about the soundtrack of Oz is that it features the debut of a band that became very big in the late 70s, Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons. This episode features an interview with ex-Falcon Wayne Burt who wrote their songs for this film. I was rapt to speak to someone in the thick of it from the period. My huge gratitude to Sarah, George and Wayne for making this such a fun show to record. You can find out more about Sarah at https://www.sarahcarrollstarparade.com/George's music is available at Bandcamp https://pollyman.bandcamp.com/musicUntil Umbrella chooses to re-release the film on DVD / blu-ray, it's on Youtube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATiiOGg_ZyQ….and you can search out the See Hear episode with myself, Bernie, Tim and the Projection Booth's Mike White discussing Oz downloading from https://seehearpodcast.blogspot.com/2020/05/see-hear-podcast-episode-33-oz-rock-n.htmlDownload this episode of LTA from Spotify, Stitcher or iTunes (search for “Love That Album podcast”)....or wherever you prefer getting your podcasts.Love That Album is proudly part of the Pantheon Podcast network.
