For some children and young people, the traditional school system has already failed them - sometimes more than once. What they need isn't a better curriculum. When schools stop doing things *to* students and start doing things *with* them, everything changes. For many neurodivergent children, reading isn't just difficult - it's frightening. And without the right support, that fear can follow them well into adulthood. How She Built a Client List Enterprise Brands Still Have Not Left Brooke's first two major clients came from a speaking appearance she almost did not take. She hated being on stage but agreed anyway. She closed Brother International and Miele from that first talk, and immediately made speaking her primary lead generation strategy. Nine years later, those clients are still with the agency. That zero churn across the social care practice is the result of a positioning decision made early: social is a revenue channel, not a content channel, and every client relationship is built around proving that. Getting on bigger stages required a longer game. Brooke spent years speaking for free, asked her network exactly how they were getting booked, and eventually took advice to write a book. The book cost around $25,000 to produce and self-publish. It opened stages that had been closed before. Social Media Marketing World followed because the book got in front of the right people and gave the organizer enough confidence to put her on stage. The ROI was not immediate. It compounded across years of bookings, consulting fees, and speaking revenue that now functions as a separate income stream while still generating agency leads. Your Differentiator Has to Be an Outcome, Not a Vibe Brooke is direct about what does not work as positioning. Saying your agency is a people-first agency, that you care more, that you have great culture: none of it separates you in a room where everyone is saying exactly the same thing. She spent years telling content marketers they were wrong, walking into rooms full of people who measured social by follower counts and publishing frequency, and saying the right metric is revenue from social. That took a stance. It made some people uncomfortable, and that discomfort was the signal she was in the right territory. The lesson she draws from her own experience is not that you need to be contrarian for its own sake. It is that your differentiator has to connect directly to a business outcome your client already cares about. Her agency's tagline is Conversation Not Campaign. That is a positioning claim with a revenue argument underneath it. If you cannot articulate what outcome your positioning produces for the client, you do not have a differentiator yet. You have a personality. Where She Is in the Founder Evolution Framework and What It Costs Her Fourteen years into building B Squared, Brooke is somewhere between Architect and CEO and honest about what that means in practice. She still runs most things. She knows it is holding back growth. She also knows that the identity piece is real: when you have built something for over a decade and your name is synonymous with what the agency delivers, stepping out of that role is not just a structural decision. It requires a different relationship with your own sense of contribution. What she articulates clearly is the tension every founder at this stage knows. She does not want to be the bottleneck anymore. She also has not yet handed the systems over to someone who can own them at the level she would. The move at this stage is not to wait until someone earns total trust before stepping back. It is to build the systems, put the right person in charge of them, and let the fender benders happen so the team develops the capability to solve problems without routing everything through the founder. The alternative is staying indispensable in a way that caps everything the agency could become. Stop Hesitating and Treat AI with Curiosity Brooke runs social media and paid media services. She is clear-eyed about what AI is doing to both: content that used to take weeks to produce is now a matter of seconds, and ad copy that required real craft is being generated faster and often better than agency teams can match manually. That is the honest read. The response she chose is not to protect what exists but to figure out where AI creates opportunity she was not positioned to capture before. The Gartner stat she cites is worth repeating: people who use AI to help them sell, sell 3.7 times more than those who do not. Brooke is a speaker, a consultant, and a sales-driven founder. That number is an opening, not a threat. The agencies that are struggling right now are the ones that treated the last two years as a window to observe and decide. The window is closing. Curiosity and willingness to play with new tools before mastery arrives is not optional. It is the trait that has always separated the founders who build something lasting from the ones who stay comfortable until the market moves without them. Dale has written another thought-provoking paper - and again he's recorded it too, so you can take it in without having to work through 34 pages of reading. He unpacks the quiet but profound shift hidden within the proposed move from four areas of need to five areas of development. The SEND register has long been used as a catch-all for children who need help - not all of whom have genuine special educational needs. The reform is set to separate those two groups, with major implications for children, families, schools, and SENCOs. This paper explores the four distinct populations affected by the changes, what the removal of Cognition and Learning as a category really means, why mental health is being repositioned as a universal concern, and how the familiar SEND vs non-SEND data comparison is about to become meaningless. Crucially, Dale argues that this reform is not about removing support - it's about making sure the right support reaches the right children, honestly described. Today is Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP) Awareness Day, and to mark the occasion we're sharing an episode focused on raising awareness of this rare condition. In this conversation, Nicky Muller - a former trustee of FOP Friends and mother of Isla, who has FOP - joins Dale to share practical insight into supporting children with rare conditions and to tell Isla's inspiring story. Nicky explains that FOP causes the body's soft tissues to progressively turn into bone, often after flare-ups triggered by injury or sometimes viruses. She highlights how unpredictable this is, and how it affects daily life - particularly movement, risk management, and schooling. A key focus is Isla's recent transition to secondary school where they discuss difficulties around inclusion, PE participation, breaks/lunchtime, and the emotional impact. Nicky highlights the importance of school-wide awareness and an inclusive culture. Bright Futures' research estimates that around 270,000 young people (age 5–24) miss 20% or more of their education each year due to long-term illness. The consequences for qualifications, employment and wellbeing are severe - for example, 79% of 18-24 year‑olds who are out of work due to ill health only have qualifications at GCSEs or below, compared with 34% of their peers. These young people don't just lose learning: prolonged absence damages social connections, confidence and everyday school experiences. "Returning to normal" needs careful planning, not a simple reinstatement of lessons. Josh Pelled, CEO of Bright Futures UK and a two-time cancer survivor, founded the charity based on his lived experience of missing significant portions of his education. The needs around SEND in schools are increasing - both in numbers and complexity of needs – and many schools are struggling with the best way to support their learners effectively. They want to do the best for their students, but the DfE provides very limited guidance on supporting learners with SEND. Did you know that common infections, like strep throat, can cause a neuroinflammatory response affecting the brain? Today we're raising awareness of difficult to diagnose and often misunderstood conditions – Paediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS) and Paediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections (PANDAS). Tina Coope, a former teacher and parent whose daughter experienced sudden neuropsychiatric symptoms, explains how PANS and PANDAS present, why they're often missed, and what schools can do to support affected children. I'm excited to share this week's episode, which I've been eagerly anticipating! Like many parents, screen time is a contentious topic in my household. Screen time is one of the most common concerns raised by parents, schools and professionals, yet much of the public conversation is polarised, guilt-inducing or overly simplistic. Families are often left feeling blamed, anxious or unsure how to respond when screens become a source of conflict or distress. As we approach the end of 2025, we want to take a moment to express our heartfelt thanks to you - our wonderful listeners! About Dr Susie Nyman Dr Susie Nyman is passionate about discovering how children learn and supporting them in ways which enable them to succeed. She was appointed as a Biology teacher at The Sixth Form College Farnborough in 1995, and subsequently as Curriculum Manager for Health and Social Care where she has worked ever since. Susie strives to raise students' achievements and support them in ways which enables them to succeed. She works with her students deploying a range of innovative and Multi-sensory teaching techniques to assist their learning including her 'Equality and Diversity Tree' and famous puppets! Additionally, she has provided training to PGCE students at Kingston University, and in a number of local schools and colleges on teaching strategies. Since February 2017, Susie has presented seminars on 'Multi-sensory Techniques' at The Learning Differences Conventions in Australia, Richmond College, The Helen Arkell Centre, Bell House, The Oratory School, The National Education Show and The Tes SEN Shows in London and Manchester. With the holiday season upon us, festivities often revolve around food, which can be particularly stressful for families with fussy eaters - something I can relate to with my 7-year-old son at mealtimes. Eating is essential for our health and well-being, yet it can become a source of anxiety for many families. In this episode, Dr Joanna Grace, sensory engagement and inclusion specialist, shares her personal journey as a fussy eater and highlights that sensory issues often relate more to texture than taste. "The emotional tension is there because you really, really love that child and you want them to eat." In our latest episode of the SENDcast, we tackle an important topic that often gets lost in the debate over terminology: the practical aspects of differentiation and adaptive teaching. Too much discussion focuses on what to call these strategies, and not enough on how to effectively implement them. Today, Sara Alston, an experienced SEND and Safeguarding consultant, joins Dale in the studio to look at the 5 phases of the lesson and how to implement adaptive teaching strategies across them: "There are two key elements; 1. Involving, engaging and supporting all the children in the class and 2. it's about not working teachers into the grave." About Samantha Ryan I am a neurodivergent mother, informal SEND advocate, and author of SEND Help! and A Parent's Guide to SEND Life and Law (although my day job is Global Process Owner working in Finance process and systems for ITV). My son is autistic, PDA and probable ADHD. He hit burnout at school in March 2024 and was left with trauma after being restrained during a mental health crisis. He has been out of education since that fateful day. I have been fighting for support and continue to battle through the SEND support system. I spent a year as co-admin helping to grow the Facebook group SEN Parent Support Group which was setup by Andrea Dixon-Boldy in February 2024 and was at 19,000 members by the time I left the group in May this year. Over that time, I did my IPSEA SEN law training for parents, created hundreds of resources breaking down SEN processes, designed and delivered training to hundreds of parents and offered parent-to-parent support alongside our amazing team of volunteers. I'm thrilled to announce that the series director, Céin McGillicuddy and his creative partner Andy Kinnear, have joined Dale on the podcast to discuss their brand-new pilot show on ITV – Play Time! Play Time features six neurodivergent comedians visiting a primary school and are challenged, in the course of one school day, to create and perform an original stage play that's based entirely on the ideas of a group of 6 to 8 year old school children, many of them from the school's SEND department. Céin and Andy share their behind-the-scenes experience of creating Play Time, their inspiration for the show and why they feel it's important to make inclusive shows like this. Positive representation of SEND in mainstream media, such as Play Time, helps normalise these experiences and reduces the sense of 'other' often associated with SEND. In this week's episode, Dr Sue Jennings, a leading expert in neuro-dramatic play and drama therapy, joins Dale to explore Neuro-Dramatic-Play (NDP). Sue explains that NDP is an attachment-based approach designed to help children, particularly those with negative early experiences, build connections through play. She emphasises the critical role of early attachment, noting that it begins even before birth and is essential for healthy emotional development. Sue shares her incredible stories having worked across over 30 countries, including her time living with a tribal community in Malaysia. Dale and Sue explore three main types of play: rhythmic play, which promotes calm and connection through structured activities; messy play, which encourages exploration and experimentation, vital for cognitive and social development; and dramatic play, allowing children to express emotions and process experiences in a safe environment. With ADHD awareness month upon us, we wanted to discuss the important topic of 'the experiences of girls in school with diagnosed/undiagnosed ADHD'. When a doctor or professional asks for details about when, why and where your child's meltdown occurred, unless you have the most incredible memory, it's unlikely you'll be able to remember the finer details. Triggers, timings, environments are all helpful in understanding a child's behaviour, but how can you keep track of them? What's the difference to you between an ideal customer profile and a buyer persona? A lot of people use those terms interchangeably, but they may or may not mean the same thing. What's your take? In that sense, they are the same. The nuance—at least the way I break them out—is an ideal customer profile covers awareness and consideration, whereas a buyer persona covers purchase and the stages beyond that. The challenge I see in B2B marketing is many people create buyer personas, which is great, but there are assumptions baked in that this person already fully understands the problem and that you can solve it for them. If you're using your buyer persona to do a content strategy—to create content or evaluate your marketing—you've already skipped over awareness and consideration. You're at the buying stage now. When we beta-tested our ideal customer profile service, our friend Brooke Sellis from B Squared gave us her buyer persona playbook to compare against the ICP we built. That's where we saw the disconnect—her playbook assumed everyone was already in the pipeline and knew the problem. Our ICP analysis is meant to help marketers approach people who may not even know there's a problem yet. You create content that resonates so when they *do* identify the problem, they enter your buyer's journey. The ICP gets to them before that. The challenge with buyer personas is they focus too much on someone already knowing what's wrong and looking for a solution. In marketing, 99% of the time, they don't know there's a problem—or they know but don't know how to solve it. Christopher S. Penn – 02:50 Let me put on my annoying CMO hat: “I only care about buyers.
