AABP Executive Director Dr. Fred Gingrich is joined by Drs. Al Martens and Nick Mayer from Waupun Veterinary Services in East Central Wisconsin. We are also joined by Katelyn Belding, a third-year student at Iowa State University who participated in a summer internship program at Waupun Veterinary Services. Our guests discuss the importance of externships for exposing students to cattle practice, providing experiences for them, making connections for future employment opportunities, and is a way for veterinarians to give back to the future generation of cattle veterinarians. We discuss the differences between an externship, which is intended to be a shorter experience, and an internship, which at Waupun Veterinary Services is a longer summer program that provides a stipend for the student.  Students often face obstacles in gaining these experiences. This can include lack of a network to identify opportunities, financial barriers to participate, and locating housing. Practices that are interested in hosting students should recognize these barriers and work to address them. Our guests also discuss identifying a person in your practice to manage the externship and internship program. Waupun Veterinary Services also provides a pay incentive to veterinarians in the practice when they have students with them to encourage them to take the time to teach the student. It is also advantageous to introduce students to other veterinary opportunities in their community, such as industry and government-employed veterinarians that work with the practice. It is also suggested to have an intern at the practice develop a project, and Belding describes her project that she completed on her internship.  The AABP Foundation provides funding for students to attend externships. The AABP Foundation also provides externship grants for students enrolled in Historically Black Colleges or Universities (HBCU) through a grant from the Boehringer Ingelheim Cares Foundation. Students interested in attending practices in Wisconsin and are current or potentially future residents of Wisconsin can apply for the Wisconsin Rural Opportunities Fund (WROF) grant. Find all externship grant funding opportunities under the Students menu of the AABP website at https://aabp.org.

Michael Fassnacht has built a career on taking risks, thinking ahead, and, above all, showing up. As the Chief Growth Officer and President of Chicagoland at Clayco, one of the largest design-build firms in the country, he has a front-row seat to the future of real estate and economic development. But his path to this leadership role was not a straight shot. It was shaped by international experiences, deep civic involvement, and a willingness to step into the unknown.Growing up in Germany, Michael's early years were defined by curiosity and ambition. After spending time in Africa as a missionary, he returned to Europe to begin his professional career with Lufthansa. The corporate world introduced him to high-stakes decision-making, but it also reinforced a critical lesson. Success is not just about talent. It is about showing up and putting yourself in the right rooms. His move to the United States was driven by something deeply personal, his wife. With their future together in mind, he left Frankfurt and started fresh in San Francisco. There, he launched one of the first SaaS companies in the marketing tech space, an endeavor that proved both challenging and rewarding. Five years later, after successfully selling the company, another opportunity knocked. This time in Chicago.Stepping into a leadership role at one of the world's most renowned advertising firms, Foote, Cone & Belding, Michael quickly became a key figure in Chicago's business landscape. His civic engagement grew as well, leading him to serve on various boards, including the Chicago Public Library Board and the Civic Consulting Alliance. These roles eventually led to a pivotal call. Mayor Rahm Emanuel asked him to help pitch Chicago for Amazon's HQ2.That bid, while unsuccessful, ignited something in him. The process of selling Chicago to the world opened his eyes to the broader impact of economic development. It was not just about business. It was about shaping a city, creating opportunities, and building a legacy that outlived a single project. That realization led to his time as Chief Marketing Officer for the City of Chicago and later as CEO of World Business Chicago, where he played a crucial role in driving investment and innovation. Now at Clayco, Michael is bringing his global perspective to real estate development. With projects that span manufacturing, data centers, and life sciences, the firm is quite literally building the future. But beyond the numbers and high-profile deals, his approach remains deeply personal. Mentorship, leadership, and the philosophy of showing up.“The most important advice I give young people nowadays is show up,” he says. “Leave your bedroom, leave your house, leave your apartment. You have to go to meetings, you have to go to events. You have to meet people face to face. You have to show up with your work, with your writing, with your thinking, with your voice.”This mindset is not just advice. It is how Michael has built his career. Whether in boardrooms, on construction sites, or in civic leadership meetings, he understands that no amount of preparation can replace the value of being present. It is a lesson that applies across industries, from aspiring entrepreneurs to corporate executives looking to make an impact. For those looking to follow in his footsteps, Michael emphasizes one more thing. Maintaining emotional independence from work. “You cannot give power over your emotional well-being to the corporation you're working for,” he says. Dedication is important, but so is the ability to step back, reflect, and ensure that success does not come at the cost of personal fulfillment.Through all his ventures, from pitching billion-dollar investments to shaping the next generation of leaders, Michael Fassnacht remains a student of life. Always learning, always building, and always showing up.

Breaking Walls

At 7PM eastern time over Mutual Broadcasting's flagship WOR, The Mysterious Traveler went on the air. Written and directed by Robert Arthur and David Kogan, The Mysterious Traveler debuted on Mutual December 5th, 1943. Maurice Tarplin played the title role with a good-natured malevolence. The traveler mostly narrated from an omniscient perch. He rode a phantom train by night. The opening signature was the distant wail of a locomotive whistle, fading in gradually until the rumble of the train could be heard. David Kogan and Robert Arthur had met in Greenwich Village, New York, partnering on Mutual's Dark Destiny. After it was canceled, they came up with the Mysterious Traveler concept and prepared three sample scripts. Norman Livingston bought it for WOR. As independent producers, they were paid a flat rate for the whole package. Any money they saved by using the same actor in multiple roles went into their own pockets, so they used the best character actors in New York. Kogan also directed the series. On Easter Sunday, episode 19, “Beware of Tomorrow,” aired just as a gloomy dusk descended upon New York. Opposite The Mysterious Traveler, The Jack Benny Program signed on live, coast-to-coast at 7PM from WEAF in New York and at 4PM from KFI in Los Angeles. By April of 1944, Benny's writing team consisted of Sam Perrin, Milt Josefsberg, John Tackaberry, and this man, George Balzer. By the spring of 1944, General Foods had been sponsoring the program for ten years, first with Jell-O and then Grape Nuts Flakes. Benny's ratings had quietly been slipping since 1941. At the end of this season, his contract with General Foods was up. There was tension between the two parties because Benny had helped save Jell-O from going out of business. Benny had full control of his show. NBC also guaranteed his Sunday time slot for as long as he wanted it. This position allowed Benny to sell his program to the highest bidder. George W. Hill, the President of American Tobacco, wanted Benny's show. His chief account executive was thirty-six-year-old Pat Weaver, the future president of NBC. Benny's management team quietly held a sealed auction for sponsorship on February 24th. A surprise winner was announced: Ruthrauff & Ryan, agency for American Tobacco's Pall Mall cigarettes, bid twenty-five thousand dollars per-week for three thirty-five week seasons. The weekly money was payable to Benny for all payroll and production costs. They also included an additional two-hundred-thousand dollars over the three years for marketing and promotion. American Tobacco also agreed to pay for any network and carrier line charges. The advertising community was stunned. The Easter Sunday program was Pall Mall's audition. In the end, this would be the only Jack Benny episode to have a Pall Mall commercial. Pat Weaver and George W. Hill knew no one would take Ruthrauff & Ryan's bid for Pall Mall seriously. Had Foote, Cone & Belding, American Tobacco's agency for its top cigarette, Lucky Strike, entered the fray, the attention would have driven up the price. The last Benny show sponsored by General Foods was June 4th, 1944. Benny took out a full page ad in Variety thanking General Foods for ten years of sponsorship. In August, he left on a three-week USO tour of Australia and the South Pacific. On August 28th, American Tobacco announced that Pall Mall's sales didn't justify a twenty-five thousand dollar per week expenditure. Lucky Strike would sponsor the show. The following week they announced a comprehensive, multimedia ad campaign. It was estimated to cost over a quarter million dollars. Lucky Strike would sponsor The Jack Benny Program beginning October 1st, 1944.

In this episode, Kurt Belding from Western Obsessions TV shares his journey of transitioning from a corporate job to hunting full-time. He discusses the challenges and rewards of archery elk hunting and the importance of setting realistic expectations. Kurt emphasizes the value of finding your own hunting style and not being swayed by others' opinions. He also highlights the mental toughness required for hunting and the importance of training for longevity. Kurt and Whitney also discuss the physical and mental preparation required for elk hunting. They emphasize the importance of endurance and mental fortitude. They also debunk the misconception that rucking with heavy weights is the best training method for elk hunting. Instead, they highlight the need for a holistic approach to fitness, focusing on mental health and overall well-being. They discuss the value of setting short-term goals and the benefits of consistency in fitness. They also explore the concept of doing hard things and the continuous learning journey in hunting. Takeaways: Transitioning to hunting full-time requires a leap of faith and a willingness to pursue your passion. Setting realistic expectations is crucial for enjoying the hunting experience. Finding your own hunting style and not being swayed by others' opinions is important for personal enjoyment and success. Training for mental toughness is just as important as physical fitness when it comes to hunting. Physical preparation for elk hunting requires strength, endurance, and mental fortitude. Rucking with heavy weights is not the most effective training method for elk hunting. Fitness should be viewed as a means to improve mental and physical health, rather than solely for aesthetic purposes. Consistency in fitness is key to long-term success and overall well-being. Setting short-term goals and focusing on day-to-day progress can lead to greater success and satisfaction. Doing hard things and pushing one's limits can lead to personal growth and increased confidence. There is no true off-season in hunting, as there are always opportunities to learn and explore different hunting experiences. The 17 HMR is old enough to vote! We have been shooting the 17 HMR for 21 years. We talk with Justin Aamodt who has probably heard more 17 HMR fired than any other person alive. Justin and his wife, Nikki, are the owners of Diamond A Guides, based near Crane, Oregon, where they help control the population of the Belding's ground squirrel, otherwise known as the sage rat – keeping the alfalfa safe for livestock. Every spring we go to rat camp and almost everyone uses the 17 HMR to the tune of 500 rounds per day per person. If you want to support free speech and good hunting content in the Internet Age, look for our coffee and books and wildlife forage blends at https://www.garylewisoutdoors.com/Shop/We recommend our latest book Bob Nosler Born Ballistic. James Belding: Tokenized was built with blood, sweat and tears

CoinGeek Conversations

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 3, 2023 22:15

For James Belding, the co-founder and CEO of Tokenized, the launch of his desktop app just days ahead of the London Blockchain conference in June was the fruit of years of work, ever  since he appeared at a CoinGeek conference with his self-funded team in Toronto in 2019. Described as a “self-custodial and enterprise-grade digital wallet …for issuing, managing and holding digital assets including Bitcoin SV”, Tokenized boasts an elegant interface, an easy sign up process and an impressive range of functions.Sure, it's taken a while, James admits, but that's because he wanted his product to be more than just “the hundredth wallet that wasn't that good and that didn't distinguish itself at all from anything else.”Tokenized's distinction lies in the wide range of what James calls “instrument types” that it supports. So in your wallet, you can have an eclectic mix, including bonds, tickets, coupons and loyalty points as well alongside fiat currencies. Despite the name of the business, James plays down the tokens themselves, partly because he thinks people have a distorted idea about them from the hype around dodgy NFTs. The tokens are just “tiny, tiny pieces of the puzzle,” he says. “You just make a token on chain. Maybe it's a five, or twenty percent improvement over current things”. It's the rest of what blockchain can do that is key to what he wants to achieve with Tokenized: “the real unlocking of value - and where all the hard work is - in the smart contracts and all the implications that arise from those”. On this week's CoinGeek Conversations, James talks about the journey from initial idea to product launch, and explains why he thinks users will agree that Tokenized was worth the wait: “We really put our blood, sweat and tears into it to make it as compelling as we could, as simple as we could. But right now anyone can download the app and they can use it as what we think is probably the best Bitcoin wallet or even crypto wallet in the whole industry.”Part of that claim rests on the thinking that James and his team have put into security. By reducing Tokenized's own custody of assets, they have put their users in a more direct relationship with the blockchain: “we saw a non-custodial approach [allowing] users to connect directly with the DLT [digital ledger technology] as intuitively very compelling from a security point of view.”That has an additional benefit when trying to sign up customers, big business especially: he can tell them that they don't need to put their faith in Tokenized being around forever - although he is confident it will be! But if the company were to disappear, the Tokenized protocol, which is open source, would still exist and continue to operate, and users could access their assets through alternative interfaces. “I think that resonates very well” in discussion with potential customers, James says. “It's a really powerful message and we get a lot of positive feedback for it.”So what are the prospects for signing up big business users? James is cautiously optimistic: “we're in active discussions with a lot of big players that are getting their heads around it. I wouldn't say we're at a stage where one of the biggest players is ready to drop everything, but we're basically at the point where I think a bunch of pilot projects are going to start rolling out quite soon”.

He recently joined me to discuss his latest book Angel of Ambition. Meet Glenn Kaplan Glenn is the NY Times bestselling author of Evil Inc. and Poison Pill. Glenn's experience being orphaned at a large publishing house. Why his ability to write believable female characters is a key ingredient to the recipe of his success. Dukes Review: Cale Yarborough returns for some reason and he's a better actor than many other guest stars! Mr. Belding (Dennis Haskins) from Saved by the Bell gets to be a star, finally! This is his third appearance on the Dukes, but first as a bad guy. More notably, and most importantly though, Al White (think "Jive Talk" from Airplane!) returns to Hazzard to play the role of another bad guy. Al White can do no wrong!  Unfortunately, even though Cal Yarborough is here....this rest of this episode only does wrong. Lotsa wrong. Lotsa horrible horrible wrong. This episode features not 1, not 2, not 3, but 4 miniature General Lee stunts….and….AND….a two wheel ski stunt. I can rationalize the cost savings of not jumping real cars dammit, but putting a car up on two wheels? That's like - $30 in tires at this point and $50 for Buzz Bundy to work his magic for 5 minutes. But, I digress. Anyway, here's the plot. An orphan is sick, he's huge Cale Yarborough fan and though we've never ever seen him before (and we'll never see him again) he's super close to the Dukes and they get Cale to come and cheer him up. These damn miniatures. Not even the awesomeness of Cale Yarborough, Mr Belding, and Al White can overcome that. 6 Corndogs. (Note: Season 7 Corndogs have ⅓ o ½ the value of other seasons Corndogs.)
