It's Thursday, and we are so ready for the weekend. So as usual, newsletter editor and our resident foodie Peyton Garcia joins to talk through Denver's hottest food news: first, a Japanese restaurant that claims to be the oldest in the state is closing in Cherry Creek, while a hot new Japanese place called Kumoya is promising to change the game in Highland. And speaking of everything old being new again, we dig into the recent explosion of interest in neighborhood markets, aka bodegas, and ask: can they thrive in car-centric Denver? Finally, we share our picks for your weekend. Bree mentioned past guest Gil Asakawa's excellent book “Tabemasho! Let's Eat! A Tasty History of Japanese in America” and DeVotchka's upcoming shows at The Stanley Hotel. Paul mentioned Rhein Haus (downtown) and Ay Papi (Cherry Creek). Peyton recommended this event for Native American Heritage Month. For even more news from around the city, subscribe to our morning newsletter Hey Denver at denver.citycast.fm. In this episode of Backstage Jazz, we spoke with singer, guitarist, and producer James McAndrew of Denver-based Milquetoast & Co. about the band's upcoming show at Dazzle on Saturday, November 11, and their new album Run Rant Rave. Denver-based Milquetoast & Co. mingles high-intensity indie rock with angular elements of Americana and a melancholic touch. The band's music has drawn comparisons to Morphine, Murder by Death, Jeff Buckley, and even a little DeVotchKa. The lyrics are abundantly self-aware and ironic without watering down the complexity of the human experience. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/backstagejazz/message

DeVotchka has been a mainstay Colorado band for almost two decades. Known for their quirky instrumentalism and playful storytelling, their art has been celebrated beyond concert venues and has dazzled audiences in the theatre and on the big screen. Now, DeVotchKa takes on a new venture: performing alongside the Boulder Philharmonic. To learn more about the momentous collaboration members Nick Urata, Jeanie King, and Tom Hagerman chat with Boulder Philharmonic Executive Director Sara Parkinson ahead of their May 6th show. Also, watch as DeVotchKa performs a few songs from the arrangements spanning their expansive discography including a cover and the famous Little Miss Sunshine Soundtrack.
Sponsored by Rising Tide Tattoo Emporium and Colorado Mushrooms, this episode of Mile High Stash features singer-songwriter Nick Urata of the beloved Colorado band DeVotchKa. Balancing his life as a film composer in Los Angeles and, with DeVotchKa, a household name in Colorado, Nick found time to chat with Mile High Stash about DeVotchKa's upcoming gig with the Boulder Philharmonic and a lot more.
This week on Future Fossils, we sync up with globe-trotting (Singapore-based) futurist Parag Khanna, author of several internationally best-selling books on the shifting landscape of human geography and technological evolution. My acquaintance with Parag dates back all the way to 2011 when I found his Hybrid Reality Institute, and started writing for his BigThink blog, thanks to the writing of Jason Silva — I knew this was a party I couldn't miss, even though I was then, as now, deeply ambivalent about the contours of the futures he and his colleagues were making visible with their rigorous research. This spirit has defined my entire adult life: if you want to help steer something in a better direction, you might just have to get your hands down into the murk and engage with it deeply enough to be in the position to make a difference. So when his agent contacted me about interviewing him about his latest book, 2021's Move: The Forces Uprooting Us, I knew it was an offer I couldn't refuse. But let me be clear that Parag sees things very differently than I do, and I appreciate that about him: he has a keen sense of the risks and dangers of our times but emphasizes the opportunities because the facts are there to support it. If you move around as much as he does, and always has, you get a kind of synoptic view of the planet and the tension between individual destiny and collective momentum comes into a new tuning. Beethoven Bad Boy is finally back! Jae has decided enough is enough, and make some episodes without a co-pilot, at least for now. This long awaited 2nd season will be split into three different, 4 episode mini series, first of which are interviews with his friends who play in rock and folk bands but came to that place from having trained in classical music. This first episode back, he chats to Tom Hagerman of DeVotchKa, the award-winning, 4 person multi-instrumental, indie-gypsy-rock band from Denver, Colorado, who's mellifluous and hypnotic songs like "How it Ends" and "New World" have been heard not only in rock venues and festivals, but also on major motion picture soundtracks such as 2006's "Little Miss Sunshine" (which garnered an Oscar and a Grammy nomination that year) and 2010's "I Love You, Phillip Morris". Jae & Tom talk about everything from his early violin lessons in Colorado Springs to, what it's really like to be on the road touring for 6 weeks, and discuss their most impressionistic classical albums from their teens. This round of "Secrets of Beethoven" harkens back to Beethoven's books of conversations, where the people he was having a conversation with, would write their questions for the composer to read as he could not hear them. Colorado Music Ambassador and Flobots emcee/lead singer Stephen Brackett talks about music as a tool for liberation, working with young people through his nonprofit Youth On Record and the state of music in Colorado with CCO Director of Marketing and Communications (and longtime friend) Gail Bransteitter. From the halls of George Washington High School to leadership of the Colorado arts world, Stephen and Gail have both been dedicated advocates and artists making a difference in our community for decades. Learn more about the Colorado Music Ambassador position and the word of both Stephen and previous Colorado Music Ambassador Shawn King of DeVotchKa. Stephen co-founded the rap/rock experimental band, the Flobots, nationally known for songs like “Handlebars” and “Rise” and their focus on social and political consciousness. Check out their music and mission at flobots.com. Watch for new songs dropping every three weeks in 2021! The Flobots created the Denver nonprofit Youth on Record offering for-credit music classes in music production, poetry and ethnic studies during the school day in high schools and middle schools. Stephen sat on the board for about ten years, acted as board chair for two and stepped off the board to become Director of Special Programs last year. During the interview he mentions the Denver Children’s Home, learn more at www.denverchildrenshome.org. Youth On Record offers free and open to the public, virtual programming five days out of the week. Explore their offerings and sign up at www.youthonrecord.org. About Youth On Record, Stephen says: “What started as an attempt of a band to do more than just soapbox but to actually live our lyrics and create pathways to challenging the power and agency that our songs were about, it actually grew into something that far exceeded our expectations. It has been the best contribution that could have come out of my musical career...That is the thing I’m most proud of.” “We’re using (music classes) as a delivery method for liberation. We’re not teaching music classes for music’s sake, we are teaching music classes so that during the school day, these students have the opportunity to speak their world, their perspective, their view, and to do so with the excellence that the arts kind of require of you.” “When you’re battling perfection, that means that you never win, but the grit that you earn in trying to meet the impossible gives you a kind of resilience that you can then leverage against the rest of your academic day. That’s what I believe when I’m talking about how music can be a great medium for liberation and a great leverage point for somebody becoming a life-long learner.” Stephen has been all over the news in Colorado for more than a year! Check out some of the headlines below: Black History Month Honors Stephen Brackett “Brer Rabbit” - How music gives voice to social justice Nine People to Watch in Denver's Culture Scene in 2021 WE WIN THE DAY BY FLOBOTS (SNEAK PEEK) Flobots co-founder, Denver nonprofit leader named state’s music ambassador B-boy: Someone involved with hip-hop culture, especially a breakdancer Shout out to George Washington High School in Denver, where Gail and Stephen got to know one another and established a love of the arts. Stephen on his influences: “My influences right now are any of the students who are bold enough to get on stage during the talent show. When I see young creatives doing things when they haven’t learned the rules yet, and the kinda stuff they come out with when they are unafraid, is always a humbling lesson for me.” A list of local artists we should know about from Stephen: Adam Stone, formally Indestructible North, now performs as Lucy (music and visual arts) Kayla Marque, singer/songwriter Joseph Lamar, singer/songwriter/producer of various mediums Buntport Theater, self-described as “a wee group of theater-making humans based in Denver. Sometimes there’s a plan A, no plan B, and miraculously plan A works! Such is the case with Nick’s story, part 1 of this “Two for Tuesday” episode. We think it should be called “advice for the left-of-center artist” cause it's chock full of inspirational moments and chance meetings that led Nick toward his dream but- it’s not all puppies and flowers…the conversation also covered the ups, downs and near-critical moments that shaped Devotchka. Then, sought after touring musician Frank Locrasto shares about his solo instrumental record for part 2 of this episode. Derek VanScoten is the producer, guitarist, and Emmy-winning musician behind Cloudchord. In early 2010 he hit the scene as a solo artist, merging live guitar with modern electronic production. Ears caught quickly, and within a year he was playing coast to coast for growing audiences. East Forest unpacks a recent interaction between the two artists where an email thread got wildly embarrassing - they're here to digest the episode. Based in Austin, Texas, he has been actively releasing solo material since 2009. In 2011 he released an official remix of Break Science featuring Talib Kweli, and in 2012 he was a featured guitarist and co-producer on Michal Menert's album Even If It Isn't Right. His album, Hit the Clouds Running, was released on Gravitas Recordings in 2013. DeVotchKa recently released its seventh studio album, "This Night Falls Forever." The record arrives seven years after the Denver band's most recent album, during which the four members pursued various side projects. It features an eclectic range of sounds backed by vigorous string sections. DeVotchKa returned to the CPR Performance Studio to play three songs from the new album. Singer Nick Urata also spoke with Alisha Sweeney about how he found a lost notebook filled with song lyrics and how his work on film scores has influenced DeVotchKa's sound.

Then, after a seven-year wait, DeVotchKa returns with "This Night Falls Forever." Next, response to the Richard Kirk podcast. Also, teens can now call the nicotine quit line in Colorado. Ian Cooke is one of our favorite recurring guests in the CPR Performance Studio. Last month the Denver experimental folk artist made his fifth appearance at CPR's OpenAir to share music from his forthcoming LP "The Flight I Flew." Music from the record will serve as the soundtrack for Celestial Navigation, the new show from Denver dance group Wonderbound opening Oct. 13. Ian Cooke and his band -- featuring Tom Hagerman of DeVotchKa -- played three songs from "The Flight I Flew." Cooke also spoke with Alisha Sweeney about creating an "intimate" vibe on the new LP, writing a narrative that takes place in outer space and what it's like to see his music interpreted through dance.

Listen to the interview here!Tell me a little about yourself and your writing.I’m a 21-year-old British woman, I graduated from King’s College, London last summer with a BA in War Studies and History, and I now work as a Content Editor for Jane’s Information Group.I’ve been writing for about ten years now, in which time I’ve amassed (and lost, sometimes) a lot of terrible juvenilia and, more recently, a novel (The Bone Queen) that I hope to submit to agents early next year. Two years ago I started writing short fiction. In that time I’ve sold stories to several magazines, including Lady Churchill’s Rosebud Wristlet, Electric Velocipede, Sybil’s Garage and Farrago’s Wainscot. I’m currently working on several things: revising The Bone Queen; starting a novel about a war between humans and the so-called “water-people” in an alternate world based on Thailand, told in the form of various texts from the world; and I’m writing some short fiction. Most of my writing tends to the fantastical, with some science fiction in the mix. I don’t apply further labels; I find them a waste of time. Tell me about the story that you've created a soundtrack/playlist for. I tend to have very few songs for a story, sometimes even one, not a whole soundtrack. Rather than give you the one song that I played a lot while writing The Bone Queen, I’ve compiled various songs that have either been mini-soundtracks or inspirations for three pieces of work. The Bone Queen is about the deal that Beth, a gunslinger, gets involved in with a story-figure, Kaili, who requests that she steal a necklace from the Bone Queen in return for the information that the Bone Queen can rid Beth of the angry ghosts following her. Meanwhile another gunslinger, Jeckel, pursues a monster that desiccates towns; and Imi, a Professor of Oral History, pursues an old tale about a man with carpets for skin. It has storytelling magic, a monster made of squares and other fun things. The second piece of work is a short story, “Tattoos of the Sky, Tattoos of the Days,” published in issue 5 of Sybil’s Garage and free to read online. It’s about unhappiness and finding love.Another short story is “An Orange Tree Framed His Body,” which is about an eighteen-year-old boy doing two things: participating in a violent rebellion against the government that’s killing the semi-sentient plumbing of the city, and facing the pattern of suicides in his family. The story is set in an alternate world with fantasy elements, but with a technology level among the elites of the society that includes cloning. I finished the first draft of it in early August; it was a difficult story to write, it pushed at what I’m able to do as a writer, so the first draft was not very good. I’m hopeful that I can edit it into something strong. What is your playlist? DeVotchKa - La LloronaDeVotchKa - Charlotte Mittnacht (The Fabulous Destiny Of)DeVotchKa - TragedyCornershop - We’re in Yr CornerAugie March - The Night is a BlackbirdPatrick Wolf - The StarsSnow Patrol - You Could Be HappyAugie March - Bolte and Dunstan Talk YouthAugie March - The Baron of SentimentLa Llorrona is the song that I often put on repeat to get into the right mindset for The Bone Queen. Something about it contains deserts, open spaces, a hint of the unusual. When not listening to just that song, I put on all my songs by DeVotchKa. Charlotte Mittnacht and Tragedy are two of my favourites. I also listened to Cornershop through some stretches. The Night is a Blackbird inspired the opening of “Tattoos…”; it became the line “The night is a blackbird and it lives on Gemma’s arm.” The rest of the song didn’t do anything for the story, just that opening line. Then, a couple of months after I wrote it, the story was accepted for publication by Sybil’s Garage. If you take a look inside an issue of Sybil’s Garage, you’ll see that every story is presented with a song that it can be read ‘to the sound of…’ I spent the next half a year on-and-off thinking about what song I would choose. Though The Night is a Blackbird had inspired the story, it wasn’t a soundtrack for the story. And I hadn’t listened to anything in particular while writing it. I settled eventually on Patrick Wolf’s The Stars, because the words are appropriate -- there are stars on the wings of the blackbird on Gemma’s arm -- and, the more I listened to the song, the more I thought that its sound suited the story.Snow Patrol’s You Could Be happy -- Now, this isn’t a very deep song. It’s about lost love: nothing remarkable. Except the sound of it, and just some of the lyrics -- You could be happy / I hope you are -- did something in my head, and the song fit with Au’s relationship (not a sexual one) with his father in “An Orange Tree Framed His Body”. The final lines of the song -- More than anything / I want to see you go / Take a glorious bite / Out of the whole world -- inspired how the story ended. I also listened to a lot of Augie March while writing this story; Bolte and Dunstan Talk Youth and The Baron of Sentiment particularly suited it. What does music mean to you? To your writing?Music can be an inspiration, an accompaniment. Music can make me stop and listen, think about something new or something in a different way. It’s something I need in my life, like flavoursome food and the countryside. What kind of music do you like to write to?Music with the right kind of sound. That doesn’t tell you much, does it? It’s hard to explain. I mean how the music feels to me -- something that comes from the notes played, the lyrics sung (if there are any) and how it makes me react in my head. It can be for just one song, or for all of a band’s music. I write to music with a sound that matches the story. If this story was made into a movie, who would you want to do the soundtrack?I would love DeVotchKa to perform a soundtrack to The Bone Queen. Their music is very different to usual soundtrack music -- both orchestral compositions and pop music -- and I’d like that. Their music can be jaunty and whimsical, thoughtful and sad; they’d have no trouble capturing the range of moods in a story.
