Title: Languaging in Hampton RoadsEpisode 14 - Bonus : A Vietnamese Voice of Faith Hosts: Jill Winkowski and Prue SalaskyDate: March 25, 2025Length: 18:13Publication Frequency: Occasional (bonus)In this Bonus episode, we talk to Trung Phan, a pastor at Vietnamese Hope Baptist Church in Annandale, Va. Phan is the youngest of a trio of Vietnamese brothers who lead churches affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention in northern Virginia; all offer services in their native Vietnamese. Like Phan, most of his congregants come from Buddhist backgrounds. This interview is an addendum to Episode 14: Voices of Faith in Hampton Roads, which featured Vietnamese, Korean and Chinese pastors talking about the use of their respective native language in worship services. Phan falls outside our geographic area of Hampton Roads in SE Virginia, but his sentiments echo theirs. He also emphasizes the importance of language in identity and stability for young people. His experience ties in to languagingHR Episode 9: What it Takes to Raise Bilingual Children; in that episode we spoke to multiple immigrants in Hampton Roads about their commitment to having their children learn their native language, its rewards and challenges. Phan, who was exposed to both Buddhist and Christian traditions in childhood, came with his family to the U.S. from the Saigon region in S. Vietnam in 1991 when he was 17. He completed high school and went to night school for IT, a career he has pursued for 20 years. He was called to the ministry in 2005 and attended seminary in Kentucky. His congregation numbers about 80 people, which swells to 150 on special occasions, such as the New Year. He describes himself as a “bridge” between the first generation of older non-English speakers and his American-born children's generation of English-only speakers.Send your feedback and questions to languagingHR@gmail.com. Title: Languaging in Hampton RoadsEpisode 14: Voices of Faith in Hampton RoadsHosts: Jill Winkowski and Prue SalaskyDate: March 5, 2025Length: 48:50Publication Frequency: Fourth Friday (approx) of each monthIn this episode we interview several pastors, all first-generation immigrants, who minister to their flocks in the native language of their country of origin. The interviews are with Pastor Echo Lin from the Shanghai region of mainland China, who leads services in Mandarin at the more than 100-year-old independent First Chinese Baptist Church in Virginia Beach; Father Joseph Nguyen who ministers to two Catholic Vietnamese congregations, Our Lady of LaVang Catholic Church in Norfolk, and Our Lady of Vietnam Catholic Church in Hampton ; and with Luke Do, Senior Pastor of Peninsula Korean Baptist Church in Newport News.(We also talked to Pastor Trung Phan, leader of Hope Vietnamese Church in Annandale, Va. Time and geographical constraints meant we weren't able to include his interview; we will run it as bonus material at a future date.)From our interviews, we learned about the changing role of the church in each community, the importance of language for identity, the generational rifts as assimilation occurs -- and what the future of ethnic-centered churches might be as globalization and technology reduce differences. We did not address the use of traditional liturgical languages, such as Latin, Arabic, Hebrew, and Koine Greek, all of which are represented in Hampton Roads. Nor did we cover the multiple Spanish-speaking churches, by far the largest segment of non-English services in the region. Instead, we focused primarily on Asian-led churches that minister to their communities through the use of the vernacular. In talking to ministers at Korean, Vietnamese and Chinese churches we learned not only about immigration patterns in the region, but also the ealier history of colonization and missionary activity. We learned in many cases that faith was secondary to a sense of community and cultural belonging. Our interest in the topic was sparked by a sign for the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, Mehane Hiwot Abune Gebre Menfes Kidus, in the Park Place neighborhood of Norfolk . We learned that the Norfolk church, started in 2013, is part of one of the most ancient branches of Christianity, part of the Coptic tradition dating back to 300 AD. Priest Teshome Yohannes Feleke presides over a congregation of 200 drawn from throughout Hampton Roads. Services are in a combination of Ge'ez, the ancient liturgical language, and Amharic, Ethiopia's everyday language that evolved from it. (Plug in the church's name to find beautiful chanting on YouTube.) The church is celebrating its renovation with a grand re-opening on March 14/15.We also discovered Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Norge, which once held services in Norwegian. Today the language is no longer used, but the church is the proud possessor of a Norwegian Bible donated by Norway's royal family in 1939. We also learned that Norge is actually the name for Norway in Norwegian, a tribute to its original Scandinavian settlers at the turn of the 20th century! As you can gather, it's a very rich topic and we only scratched the surface of the Babel of languages used in worship in our Hampton Roads region. Please send your questions and feedback to languagingHR@gmail.com

Ep.227 Zohra Opoku examines the politics of personal identity formation through historical, cultural, and socio-economic influences, particularly in the context of contemporary Ghana. Opoku's explorations have primarily been expressed through her photography, which she translates into screen printing. This process has led to a collage art practice that combines hand-stitched embroidery on various pre-dyed natural fabrics. She also incorporates references from West African brass-making traditions into her work, which can be experienced as applications on the textile pieces or as sculptures themselves. While her work relays social commentary and broadly relevant themes around the human experience, each of Zohra's explorations is intimately rooted in personal identity politics. She repeatedly integrates family heirlooms and her own self-image into her visual observations of Ghana's cultural memory. In 2023, she is among the artists exhibited in the 15th edition of Sharjah Biennale ‘Thinking Historically in the Present' (United Arab Emirates), as Black Rock Sénégal Alumni at 14th edition of DAK'ART ‘Forger/Out Of Fire' in 2022 and at 7th Athens Biennale ‘Eclipse'(Greece) 2021. She has exhibited internationally such as the Brooklyn Museum (NYC), The Museum for Photography (Chicago), The Cleveland Museum of Art, High Museum of Art (Atlanta), Kunsthaus Hamburg, Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, Musée de l'Ethnographie (Bordeaux), Guggenheim Museum (Bilbao), Kunsthal Rotterdam, Archaeological Museum of Mykonos, Southbank Centre / Hayward Gallery (London), TATE London, SAVVY Contemporary (Berlin), Palais Populaire (Berlin), National Museum Nairobi, CCA Lagos, Nubuke Foundation (Accra) and RAW Material Company (Dakar). Author David Annandale joins me for the second time to talk about another 1940's horror film! This time we wade through STRANGLER OF THE SWAMP (1946) which is one of the more interesting examples of the output of the smallest of the Poverty Row studios - PRC (a.k.a. Producer's Releasing Corporation). This is a fascinating low budget film that manages to make its lack of resources a virtue by leaning into the creepy fog and mists to hide the set limitations. It's a favorite of both of us and we love getting to talk about it. STRANGLER OF THE SWAMP is actually a remake of a German movie made by the same director a decade before. We start the show by digging into the earlier film to compare the two and delineate their many differences. The American film is much more a horror tale than the 1936 German original with a dark foreboding hanging over the characters living in an isolated village. The 1946 film has the vengeful ghost of a wrongfully accused man stalking and strangling the men responsible for his death and extending his attacks to the male children of the families as well. Having watched this moody little gem repeatedly over the years we were surprised to only now take note of the heroic town mothers the movie presents. While the men flail around trying to find a ‘reasonable' excuse for the horrific events the female population works to deal directly with the problem. We note that this story element might be related to the changing view of women's place in society during the second world war and wonder if this was a conscious choice by the filmmakers. We may never know, but it shows just how intriguing this little film can be and points to how creativity can make a movie endlessly rewatchable. There are always thought-provoking things buried in this swamp to drag out of the muck! Mr. Annandale and I last discussed THE MONSTER MAKER and that episode can be found here. If you have any comments about this film or any other Poverty Row horror film thebloodypit@gmail.com is the place to send them. Thank you for listening!
Music has a way of connecting people, transcending language barriers, and healing the soul. The discipline and dedication required to master an instrument can translate into valuable life skills that go beyond the music classroom. In this episode of Parenting Impossible, Annette Hines spoke with Annie Ray, the founder of the Crescendo Orchestra program, a music class tailored for students with significant disabilities, and Parent Orchestra, which invites parents to join their children in learning music, fostering a vibrant community, and encouraging parental involvement in their kids' musical journeys. Annie passionately advocates for music education as a core subject, emphasizing the need to meet students where they are and tailor instruction to their unique needs. Her approach showcases music's profound impact on students, transcending mere notes and rhythms. The Crescendo Orchestra program is a shining example of how music can transform the lives of young students, providing them with a sense of community, purpose, and hope for the future. In this episode, you will hear: Why emphasizing a student-centered approach fosters a joyful space for musical exploration without fear of judgment. Ways the Parent Orchestra program has built a vibrant community of over 200 parents on a shared learning journey. How music education sharpens cognitive abilities and instills resilience, helping students navigate challenges and embrace imperfections. Ways fellow educators can launch inclusive music programs, advocating for equal access to the transformative power of music education. In the latest episode of The Free Press' podcast, "FreepCast," summer intern Callie Hadler talks about being the new kid covering the biggest story to hit the region in years. Hadler, a journalism student from the University of Minnesota, had only been part of the newsroom for a few weeks when she was told to help cover a story that wound up on the national news: the floods and the crisis at the Rapidan Dam. Hadler, who is from Annandale, also talks with hosts Joe Spear and Robb Murray about why she chose to get into journalism and the challenges her generation face in a world with seemingly unending waves of negative news.
It's Friday, June 28th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Laos officials arrest pastor and 5 Christians On June 22nd, village officials in central Laos arrested Pastor Mum and five other Christians as they prayed in preparation for worship services the next day, reports Morning Star News. Sirikoon Prasertsee, director of Human Rights Watcher for Lao Religious Freedom, said, “The arrests took place on Saturday at Mr. Mum's home. They are currently being imprisoned in Xaibouathong District prison.” After Pastor Mum put his faith in Christ in 2019 upon experiencing God's healing, he established a church that worshipped freely in his home According to Open Doors, Laos is the 21st most difficult country worldwide in which to be a Christian. Please keep Pastor Mum and the other five Christians in your prayers. Biden gave confusing answer on economy Last night in Atlanta, President Joe Biden, the Democrat, debated former President Donald Trump, the Republican, on CNN ahead of the November 5th presidential election. With Jake Tapper and Dana Bash as co-anchors, the set up was unusual. Unlike most presidential debates, there was no live audience. Plus, during the answer of one candidate, his opponent's microphone was turned off which prevented any interruptions. (You can watch the entire 90-minute debate or read the debate transcript through special links at www.TheWorldview.com.) Out of the gate, the hosts asked about the economy. Biden championed the redistribution of wealth and then became confused, reports LifeSiteNews.com. Listen. BIDEN: “What I'm gonna do is fix the tax system. For example, we have 1,000 trillionaires in America, I mean billionaires in America. And what's happening? They're in a situation where they, in fact, pay 8.2% in taxes. If they just paid 24%, 25% -- either one of those numbers -- they raise $500 million dollars, billion dollars I should say, in a 10-year period. We'd be able to wipe out his debt. “We'd be able to help make sure that all those things we need to do -- child care, elder care, making sure that we continue to strengthen our healthcare system, making sure that we're able to make every single, solitary person eligible for what I've been able to do with the, with the COVID, excuse me, with um, dealing with everything we have to do with, uh.. Look, we finally beat Medicare.” Trump claimed that illegals will bankrupt Social Security and Medicare JAKE TAPPER: “Thank you, President Biden. President Trump?” TRUMP: “Well, he's right. He did beat Medicare. He beat it to death and he's destroying Medicare. Because all of these people are coming in. They're putting them on Medicare. They're putting them on Social Security. They're going to destroy Social Security. This man is going to single-handedly destroy Social Security. “These millions and millions of people coming in. They're trying to put them on Social Security. He will wipe out Social Security. He will wipe out Medicare. So, he was right in the way he finished that sentence. And it's a shame. What's happened to our country in the last four years is not to be believed.” Trump speaks out in favor of Abortion Kill Pill Dana Bash asked about the Abortion Kill Pill which 63% of mothers who abort their children use instead of surgical abortion today. BASH: “This is the first presidential election since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. This morning, the court ruled on yet another abortion case, temporarily allowing emergency abortions to continue in Idaho. “Despite that state's restrictive ban, former President Trump, you take credit for the decision to overturn Roe v Wade which returned the issue of abortion to the states.” TRUMP: “Correct.” BASH: “However, the federal government still plays a role in whether or not women have access to abortion pills. They're used in about two-thirds of all abortions. As President, would you block abortion medication?” TRUMP: “First of all, the Supreme Court just approved the Abortion Pill. And I agree with their decision to have done that. And I will not block it. “If you look at this whole question that you're asking is 51 years ago. You had Roe v. Wade, and everybody wanted to get it back to the states. Everybody -- without exception, Democrats, Republicans, liberals, conservatives -- everybody wanted to back -- religious leaders. “And what I did is I put three great Supreme Court justices on the court, and they happened to vote in favor of killing Roe v. Wade, and moving it back to the states. Now the states are working it out. If you look at Ohio, it was a decision that was an end result that was a little bit more liberal than you would have thought. Kansas, I would say the same thing. Texas is different. Florida is different, but they're all making their own decisions right now. And right now, the states control it. That's the vote of the people.” In Psalm 139:13-14, David says to God, “For You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Biden championed abortion, then fell apart President Biden, who has campaigned on his commitment to codify Roe v. Wade into law, took issue with Trump's victory lap over Roe v. Wade's defeat. BIDEN: “It's been a terrible thing what you've done. The fact is that the vast majority of constitutional scholars supported Roe when it was decided, supported Roe. This idea that they're all against it, it's just ridiculous. And this is the guy who says the state should be able to have it. We're in a state where in six weeks, you don't even know whether you're pregnant or not, but you cannot see a doctor and have him decide on what your circumstances are, whether you need help. “The idea that states are able to do this is a little like saying, ‘We're gonna turn civil rights back to the states -- that each state has a different role.' “Look, there's so many young women -- including a young woman who just was murdered, and [Trump] went to the funeral. The idea that she was murdered by an immigrant coming into, they talk about that. But here's the deal. There's a lot of young women to be raped by their, by their in-laws, by their spouses, brothers and sisters. By, it's just, it's just ridiculous. And they can do nothing about it. And then they try to arrest them when they cross state lines.” BASH: “Thank you.” The age of the candidates, and their golf games, were addressed Dana Bash raised the issue of age with both candidates. This is how Trump responded. BASH: “Former President Trump, you would be 82 at the end of your second term. What do you say to voters who have concerns about your capabilities to serve?” TRUMP: “Well, I took two tests, cognitive tests. I aced them, both of them as you know. We made it public. He took none. I'd like to see him take one, just one, a real easy one. Like go through the first five questions. You couldn't do it. I took physical exams every year. I'm in very good health. “I just won two club championships, not even senior, two regular club championships. To do that, you have to be quite smart, and you have to be able to hit the ball a long way. And I do it. He doesn't do it. He can't hit a ball 50 yards. He challenged me to a golf match. I think I'm in very good shape. I feel that I'm in as good a shape as I was 25, 30 years ago. Actually, I'm probably a little bit lighter.” BASH: “President Biden?” BIDEN: “I'd be happy to have a driving contest with him. I got my handicap, which when I was vice president, down to a six. By the way, I told you before, I'm happy to play golf, if you carry your own bag. Do you think you can do it?” TRUMP: “That's the biggest lie that he is a six handicap of all." BIDEN: “I was at an eight handicap.” TRUMP: “Yeah, I've seen his swing. I know your swing. Let's not act like children.” BIDEN: “You are a child!” Presidential historian: “Most disjointed, least substantive, most dishonest debate” Appearing on “News Nation,” presidential historian Chris Stirewalt offered this analysis. STIREWALT: “In the 64 years of presidential debates, I feel pretty confident that I can say this is the worst one that has ever been done. The most disjointed, the least substantive, the most dishonest. I'm sure the only one that involved a debate about golf handicaps, fat jokes, and somebody calling somebody ‘Brandon.' This was a real low watermark. “I will say that no incumbent has ever done as poorly as Joe Biden did. In 1976, Gerald R. Ford got tangled up talking about Poland and Soviet domination of Poland. And it probably cost him a full term as president. It probably cost him that election. “And I'm here to tell you that what Joe Biden did tonight in the first hour of that debate, if he stays in this race, we will look back and say that the strategy by the Biden campaign to force an early debate and put Donald Trump front and center, and get this revved up, was a catastrophically bad strategic choice.” Why two Montana teens gave $100 and $25 to The Worldview Last night, I talked to a 17-year-old named Amos in Montana who gave $25 to help fund The Worldview. AMOS: “The money I contributed came from a job I have for our family business. People hire us to carry off their junk or just stuff they don't use anymore. We take it mostly just to the dump or, if we can, resell it or take to the thrift store. We like to do that too.” Amos told me what he likes about the newscast. AMOS: “I like the updates on the persecuted brothers and sisters around the world. It encourages me to pray for them more.” Plus, he mentioned the greatest moral issue of our time. AMOS: “I appreciate the updates on legislation concerning abortion in the U.S. and around the world. It helps me to pray for good leadership more. So, my prayer is that God's love for life would be upheld in our country.” I also spoke to a 13-year-old named Dahlia who lives in Helena, Montana. DAHLIA: “I like how you add Bible verses to some of your stories that you tell.” She decided to give $100. DAHLIA: “I have been listening to The Worldview for a long time and I would be sad if it stopped. So, when I decided to give some money, one hundred dollars is just what came to my mind.” Dahlia makes money by playing her violin at the Helena, Montana Farmer's Market every Saturday. DAHLIA: “People passing by usually give me tips in my violin case. I play about an hour at a time, for four hours. Over the course of four hours, I usually get around a hundred dollars of tips. And that's what I decided to donate to The Worldview.” In Acts 20:35, “The Lord Jesus Himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.'” 32 Worldview listeners donated $15,977.47 And finally, toward our $84,000 final goal by 5:00pm central this Saturday, June 29th, 32 Worldview listeners stepped up to the plate to help fund our 6-member news team for another fiscal year. It's Thursday, June 27th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Nicaragua has shut down 250 Protestant groups Roman Catholic Churches have faced persecution in Nicaragua under the regime of Daniel Ortega. The dictator is increasingly targeting Protestant churches as well. The central American country shut down over 250 Protestant groups in recent years. Earlier this year, authorities imprisoned 11 Evangelical pastors associated with Mountain Gateway, a ministry that drew thousands to its Christ-centered events. Nicaragua is ranked 30th on the Open Doors' World Watch List of nations where it is most difficult to be a Christian. Israeli Jews are asking for New Testaments Jews for Jesus reports more people of the Jewish faith are seeking New Testaments. The nonprofit offers the New Testament to Israelis for free. The group sent over 1,200 New Testaments to Israelis since the Muslim terrorist group Hamas attacked Israel on October 7th, 2023. Aaron Abramson, the Executive Director of Jews for Jesus, told The Christian Post that the terrorist attack has prompted many Israelis to have spiritual questions. He said, “Israel has prided itself in its ability to defend itself, so [the Hamas attack] was a real blow to that for people. … If you can't put your trust in … a military solution … then where do you put your trust? … And I think that's why a lot of people were starting to sort of dig into those spiritual questions.” In Romans 1:16, the Apostle Paul wrote, “For I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Gentile.” Supreme Court okay with Biden's censorship of Facebook The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 6-3 in favor of the Biden administration yesterday in a social media case. Multiple states and social media users accused the government of pressuring media companies, like Facebook, to censor content about COVID-19 and the 2020 presidential election. Justices Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas, and Neil Gorsuch ruled against the Biden administration. In the dissenting opinion, Justice Alito warned, “If a coercive campaign is carried out with enough sophistication, it may get by. That is not a message this Court should send.” Vermont's crisis pregnancy centers allowed to speak the truth A federal court in Vermont is allowing pro-life pregnancy centers to continue their lawsuit against the state. The centers are challenging a state law that censors their free speech. The law only applies to pregnancy centers, which could face fines of up $10,000 if the state's attorney general believes their advertisements are misleading. Julia Payne with Alliance Defending Freedom said, “Pregnancy centers should be free to serve women and offer the support they need without fear of unjust government punishment. As our case continues, we will urge the court to support the rights of pregnancy centers that provide these critical care services.” 70% of Americans approve of homosexual faux marriage A new survey from Gallup found nearly 70% of Americans believe that faux homosexual marriage should be legal. And 64% believe that sexually perverted lifestyles are morally acceptable. However, support for these issues is plateauing and even declining slightly. This is driven by a drop in support for such lifestyles by Republicans. Forty-six percent of Republicans support such lifestyles now, down from 55% in 2021. The drop in support comes as Democrats have supported sexually perverted lifestyles for children through the schools and medical industry. Low home inventory and high interest rates drives prices higher The National Association of Realtors reports the sale of previously owned homes is down 2.8% in May, compared to last year. Existing home sales are now at a 30-year low. With low inventory and high interest rates, home prices continue to climb. The median home price in May was a record $419,300. That's up 5.8% compared to last year. If you can forgive, you'll be happier The American Bible Society released their latest data from the “State of the Bible USA 2024 Report.” The report found that people who say they are willing to forgive others were more likely to score higher in Human Flourishing which involves happiness, health, purpose, character, and relationships. The report also noted that young people who engage with Scripture score higher in Human Flourishing. Dr. John Blake, editor-in-chief of the State of the Bible series, said, “Not only do [Gen Zers] score higher on the Human Flourishing scale than other young adults who don't read the Bible — but they have the highest score of any generation.” In Proverbs 8:35, Wisdom says, “For whoever finds me finds life, and obtains favor from the LORD.” Why Virginia Worldview listener gave $200 Ginger and her husband Michael in Jonesville, Virginia gave $200 yesterday to help fund the 6-member newscast team for another fiscal year. I called her last night and asked her what she liked about The Worldview in 5 Minutes. GINGER: “I like the very clear, Christian worldview that's presented, the fact that it's just straight news, straight facts, but then you also, by the addition of Scripture and a little analysis, show how Christians should think about these things.” She was encouraged to hear one uplifting story about Tennessee. GINGER: “I really appreciated you presenting the story about the Tennessee governor and his recent signing of the call for fasting and praying for the state of Tennessee. We live near there, but actually go to church in Tennessee. So we know, have a lot of friends and it's been very exciting to ask them. ‘Did they realize that? Do they know that?' I just thought that was fantastic that you presented it because you may be the only news source that shares that.” Ginger also liked the recent human interest story I highlighted about the Katy, Texas couple who discovered a newborn baby girl on the ground who had been abandoned. GINGER: “The story about the couple that found the baby was heartbreaking in one sense, but tremendously hopeful. Life was valued and life was saved in a culture that worships death. I so appreciated that being reported as well.” Ginger urges other Worldview listeners to make a donation today to help us reach our $84,000 goal. GINGER: “If you appreciate the objective news and the Christian worldview then definitely it needs to be supported. It's such a rarity. Now, my one thing would be don't wait to the last minute like I did.” McMANUS: (laughs) “Well, it is the last minute. That's okay, as long as people get in, before the wire.” GINGER: “It is definitely a worthy cause to support Adam. I don't even realize how much work is put into the research and the gathering. There's so much out there. It's so refreshing to have a new source and a news broadcast that I can listen to. I can quickly get the gist of the news that day, but from the Christian worldview that I share. It's refreshing!” 23 Worldview listeners donated $3,105.37 And finally, toward our $84,000 final goal by 5:00pm central this Saturday, June 29th, 23 Worldview listeners stepped up to the plate to help fund our 6-member team for another fiscal year. Our thanks to Rob in Annandale, Virginia, Edward in Burnt Hills, New York, Rich in Roanoke, Virginia, and Paul in Glen Allen, Virginia – each of whom gave $25. We appreciate Augustine in Auburn, California who gave $30, Samuel in Niceville, Florida who gave $37.37, Jeremy and Kristin in Cleveland, Tennessee who gave $40 as well as Colleen in Melbourne, Florida and Joshua in Hortense, Georgia – both of whom gave $50. We're grateful to God for Eli in San Diego, California who gave $58, as well as Eben in Kansas City, Missouri, Kirsten in Drake, Colorado, Corrie in Crawfordsville, Indiana, Amy in Snohomish, Washington, Leslie in Middletown, Delaware, Cory in Morrison, Colorado, and Tamar in Poplar Bluff, Missouri – each of whom gave $100. And we're thankful for the sacrifice of Don in Rogers, Minnesota who pledged $15/month for 12 months for a gift of $180, Michael and Ginger in Jonesville, Virginia, Stephen in Morgantown, West Virginia, and Rick and Barb in Arlington, Washington – each of whom gave $200, Duane in Moriarty, New Mexico who gave $300, and Michael and Jacci in Valley Center, California who pledged $80/month for 12 months for a gift of $960. Those 23 donors gave $3,105.37. Ready for our new grand total? Drum roll please. (sound effect of drum roll) $64,160.53 (audience cheering) We still need to raise $19,839.47 by 5:00pm Saturday, June 29th In order to hit our $84,000 goal, we still need to raise $19,839.47 in just 48 hours. I had hoped that 40 people would be inspired to make a donation yesterday, but only 23 did so. At this point, on this Thursday, we need 60 people to make either a one-time donation or a monthly pledge. I wonder if you might be one of four people to give a one-time gift of $2,000. There might even be someone who would invest $5,000 in this Christ-centered work. Could you be one of 6 Worldview listeners to pledge $100 per month for 12 months, 4 people to pledge $50 per month for 12 months, and 8 people to pledge $25/month for 12 months? Time is ticking. (sound effect of ticking clock) We need your help by 5:00pm central on Saturday, June 29th. Your support enables our 6-member newscast team to thrive. We have three writers – Kevin Swanson, Jonathan Clark, and myself, the researcher, Emily Munday, and the uploaders of the audio on multiple platforms – Rebekah Swanson and Kayla White. Were you touched by what Ginger in Jonesville, Virginia said today about what makes this newscast special? Did you hear what 10-year-old Lukas in Olympia, Washington said yesterday about why he gave $10 of his own money? I need you to step up to the plate. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson Muslims killing Christians in Russia and Nigeria Islam-related deaths have dominated the news over the weekend. Suspected Jihadists attacked Russian Orthodox Churches and synagogues in two cities in Southern Russia, 75 miles apart from one another, killing at least twenty, reports ABC News. In addition, last week, Fulani Muslims stormed a village in Kajuru County, Nigeria with AK-47s. As they shouted “Allahu Akbar” or “Allah is Greater,” they shot up a group of Christians who were conducting a prayer meeting for the community, killing five, reports International Christian Concern. 1,300 Muslims died during pilgrimage to Mecca And, just within the last week, over 1,300 Muslims have died of excessive heat on their pilgrimage to Mecca where temperatures have soared as high as 120 degrees Fahrenheit (50 degrees Celsius), according to the Associated Press. One of the five pillars of Islam is the Hajj, a once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimage to Mecca. They hope it will help with forgiveness of their sins. But Ephesians 1:7 tells us that in Jesus “we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace.” Argentina's food inflation drops from 211% to 0.1% Argentina reports the first week without food inflation in thirty years, and only 0.1% in fifteen days. That's not bad for a nation that was looking at 211% inflation or 4% per week back in 2023. Argentina's new conservative president, Javier Milei, is wrapping up a visit to Europe, in which he referred to the government of Spain bringing "poverty and death" to the country. And, he told an audience that he is defeating the socialists with "the largest fiscal adjustment in the history of Argentina." Trump is angry that Biden has targeted pro-lifers Speaking to the Faith and Freedom Coalition's Road to Majority conference at the Washington Hilton over the weekend, presidential hopeful Donald Trump promised he would take care of the pro-life activists facing prison time “on the first day.” Listen to Trump tell the story of Paula Harlo. TRUMP: “In the Republican Party, we will always support families, babies, life. Very important to the Republican Party. “By contrast, Joe Biden is weaponizing the Justice Department to viciously persecute pro-life activists and Americans of faith. Just last month, the Biden DOJ got Paula Harlow, a 75-year-old woman in poor health, sentenced to two years in prison for singing outside of a [abortion] clinic. Fearing she would die in prison, her husband pleaded with the judge for mercy and even asked to be thrown in prison with his wife. The judge responded by mocking their religion. “Paula is one of many peaceful pro-lifers whom Joe Biden has rounded up, sometimes with SWAT teams, and thrown them in jail. Many people are in jail over this. This is just crazy. We're gonna get that taken care of immediately, first day. “But let's call these brave Americans what they really are. It's persecuted Christians. That's what they are. They're persecuted.” Franklin Graham to Trump: Stop cussing During another of his speeches over the weekend, the former president announced having received a letter from evangelist Franklin Graham, encouraging him to avoid foul language in his speeches. Trump said the evangelist is wrong on the matter. Trump justified an occasional use of foul language for emphasis, but then told the audience he has been “working hard on it.” Ephesians 4:29 is for all of us: “Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.” Supreme Court to examine case banning puberty blockers for minors The U.S. Supreme Court agreed Monday to take up a case which challenges a Tennessee law banning artificial medical treatments for minors who want to change their God-given gender, reports CBS News. About half of the states have placed restrictions on such medical procedures. Biden's transgender plan blocked The flags are on the field on this one. Already, two U.S. district judges have blocked the Biden administration's plan to impose Title IX restrictions on public schools in America in an effort to transgender bathrooms and sports programs. So far, 26 states have joined seven lawsuits concerning the policy which is supposed to go into effect on August 1st. The Scriptures do speak to this moral issue. Deuteronomy 22:5 says, “A woman shall not wear anything that pertains to a man, nor shall a man put on a woman's garment, for all who do so are an abomination to the Lord your God.” Will women be drafted? The U.S. Senate has approved a measure that would include women in the military draft, reports The Hill.com. The provision is not contained in the House version of the National Defense Authorization Act before Congress. And a spokesperson for House Speaker Mike Johnson told Fox News Digital that he is opposed to the inclusion of women in the draft. Presently, according to Pew Research, Israel, Eritrea, Mali, Morocco, North Korea, Tunisia, Mozambique, Norway, and Sweden include women in their selective service program. 2,750 pro-life pregnancy centers vs. 1,603 abortion mills Lifeway Research reports that 16% of Protestant churches support crisis pregnancy centers in the United States. Baptist churches are three times more likely to provide financial support for the pro-life centers than Lutheran Churches. According to the data, 2,750 pro-life pregnancy centers provide $358 million of free services to women across the country each year, according to a Charlotte Lozier Institute report issued last December. By contrast, as of 2020, there were 1,603 facilities conducting abortions in America. Sadly, states are now spending over $200 million annually on abortion services, and the federal government is funding domestic abortion businesses to the tune of $390 million per year. That's about the same amount of money donated each year by private charity to pro-life pregnancy centers. 21 Worldview listeners donated $4,140 And finally, toward our $84,000 final goal by 5:00pm central this Saturday, June 29, 21 Worldview listeners stepped up to the plate to help fund our 6-member team for another fiscal year. We honor the donations of Edna in Marionville, Missouri who gave $75, Brett in Topeka, Kansas who gave $100, an anonymous donor and Grant in Ashland, Kentucky – both of whom gave $200, as well as Mark in Rossville, Georgia who pledged $20/month for 12 months for a total gift of $240. And we are grateful to God for Larry in Union, Kentucky and William in Marshall, Illinois – both of whom gave $250, Calvin in Odessa, Minnesota who gave $300, Max in Macon, Georgia and Lisa in Newport, Washington – both of whom gave $500, as well as Elizabeth in Carol Stream, Illinois and Charles in Waxhaw, North Carolina – both of whom pledged $50/month for 12 months for a gift of $600 each. Those 21 donors gave $4,140. Ready for our new grand total? Drum roll please. (sound effect of drum roll) $58,005.16 (audience cheering) In order to hit our $84,000 goal, we still need to raise $25,994.84 by the end of the week. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Armenian Christian man received 10-year prison sentence in Iran After losing a court appeal in early June, Armenian Hakop Gochymayan received a 10-year prison sentence for allegedly participating in Christian activities in Iran, reports International Christian Concern. Gochymayan and his wife, Elisa, who is of Iranian descent and has family in Iran, were detained near Tehran in August 2023. In a report from Barnabas Aid, the couple was “placed in solitary confinement and subjected to intense psychological torture.” Hebrews 13:3 says, “Don't forget those who are in prison. Remember them as though you were in prison with them. And don't forget those who are suffering. Remember them as though you were suffering with them.” Authorities in Pardis, Iran, arrested the couple, who were in the country visiting friends and family as they dined at an acquaintance's home. Reportedly, the Armenian man had several copies of the New Testament, written in the Persian language of Farsi, and had attended multiple churches during his stay. In an attempt to dissuade conversions, it is illegal in Iran to speak to non-Christians about the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to have Bibles written in Farsi, which is the nation's official language. According to Open Doors, Iran is the ninth most difficult country worldwide in which to be a Christian. Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un sign pact in China's shadow Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un signed a new pact Wednesday that includes a pledge of mutual defense if either is attacked, reports NBC News. The agreement was sealed at a summit in Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea, during a rare visit by Putin to the reclusive nuclear-armed state as both countries face growing confrontations with the West. The BBC noted that the real power in the region was not in Pyongyang, nor did it want to be. Putin and Kim were bonding on China's doorstep. While North Korean artillery would be a shot in the arm for Putin's war effort, swapping missile technology for it would not exactly be a great deal. And Putin might realize it's not worth annoying China, which buys Russian oil and gas, and remains a crucial ally in a world that has isolated him. Pyongyang needs China even more. It's the only other country Kim Jong Un visits. Anywhere between a quarter to a half of North Korea's oil comes from Russia, but at least 80% of its business is with China. Megachurch pastor Robert Morris resigns over moral failure Megachurch pastor Robert Morris, the 62-year-old founder of Gateway Church in Southlake, Texas, resigned after Cindy Clemishire accused him of sexually abusing her over multiple years in the 1980s beginning when she was 12, reports The Christian Post. Morris had admitted that he had engaged in "inappropriate sexual behavior with a young lady" while he was a pastor at another church in his early 20s. But he did not name his accuser or disclose her age at the time the abuse began. 1 Timothy 3:2 and 7 says, “Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach. … He must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil's trap.” In the announcement of Morris' resignation, Gateway Church elders said they have retained the law firm of Haynes & Boone, LLP, to "conduct an independent, thorough, and professional review of the report of past abuse to ensure we have a complete understanding of the events from 1982-1987." In their statement, the elders wrote, “Regretfully, prior to Friday, June 14, the elders did not have all the facts of the inappropriate relationship between Morris and the victim, including her age at the time and the length of the abuse. The elders' prior understanding was that Morris's extramarital relationship, which he had discussed many times throughout his ministry, was with ‘a young lady' and not abuse of a 12-year-old child.” However, Cindy Clemishire claims that in 2007 “at least one elder had specific notice that I was sexually abused beginning when I was 12 years old.” One ripple effect is that the Texas-based Daystar Television Network, one of the largest Christian television networks in the world, has removed all programming featuring Robert Morris. German shot put athlete gives glory to God German athlete Yemisi Ogunleye won the bronze medal in the shot put competition at the European Athletics Championships in Rome with a throw of 61 feet, reports Evangelical Focus. After winning the silver medal at the World Championships in Glasgow in March 2024, she has become one of the leading names in her discipline. After competing, she said, “I gave it my all.” In addition to her sporting career, the athlete also openly talks about her Christian faith and participates in a Gospel choir. On social media she wrote, “Thank you for the many prayers. Is God good? All the time!” Psalm 29:2 says, “Ascribe to the LORD the glory due His name; worship the LORD in the splendor of His holiness.” 8 Worldview listeners donated $3,390 And finally, toward our $63,000 goal by this Saturday, June 22nd – the three-week mark of our month-long fundraiser, 8 Worldview listeners stepped up to the plate to help fund our 6-member team for another fiscal year. Our thanks to Robert in Annandale, Virginia and Augustine in Auburn, California – both of whom gave $25. We appreciate Chad in Moriarty, New Mexico who pledged $20/month for 12 months for a gift of $240 as well as Richard in Wyoming, Delaware, Michael in Houston, Texas, and Bill in Thibodaux, Louisiana – each of whom pledged $25/month for 12 months for a gift of $300 each. And we're grateful to God for Bill in Castle Rock, Colorado who gave $1,000 as well as a husband and wife in Louisiana who donated $1,200. Those 8 donors gave $3,390. Ready for our new grand total? Drum roll please. (sound effect of drum roll) $51,845.16 (audience cheering) Toward this Saturday's goal of $63,000, we need to raise $11,154.84. That means we need to need 5 people to pledge $100 per month for 12 months, 4 people to pledge $50 per month for 12 months, and 8 people to pledge $25/month for 12 months. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Muslim militants killed three Christians in Nigeria Militants with the Islamic State West Africa Province killed three Christian men in Nigeria recently. On June 3rd, the extremists stopped a vehicle in the northern part of the country. They allowed Muslim passengers to leave, but abducted the Christians before killing them at gunpoint. The same Islamic group carried out eight attacks against Christian villages in Nigeria back in January. The incident left 12 Christians dead. This came after the Islamic State called for militants to “kill [Christians] where you find them.” Psalm 116:15 says, “Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of His saints.” Nigeria is ranked sixth on the Open Doors' World Watch List of nations where it is most dangerous to be a Christian. European Central Bank cut interest rates Last week, the European Central Bank cut interest rates for the first time in five years. It's the second major economy to do so after Canada. The European bank lowered rates from 4% to 3.75%. The move came ahead of the European elections as voters face higher prices. Meanwhile, the U.S. continues to keep interest rates unchanged. The Federal Reserve held the rate around 5.25% to 5.5%, the highest in over two decades. The Fed anticipates only one rate cut this year as inflation remains higher than its target of 2% annually. Texas judge v. Biden over sexual perversion On Tuesday, a federal judge in Texas ruled against the Biden administration's attempt to protect students living sexually perverted lifestyles. The U.S. Department of Education had issued guidance, threatening to remove funding from schools that did not accommodate students' so-called gender identity or sexual orientation. The Texas Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton brought the lawsuit against the Education Department. He said, “Threatening to withhold education funding by forcing states to accept 'transgender' policies, that put women in danger, was plainly illegal.” 10 Texas abortions in January Also in Texas news, the state's Health and Human Services Commission reports there were 10 abortions in the state in January. Texas has banned nearly all abortions since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. The pro-life law does allow abortions under a so-called medical necessity exception in life-of-the-mother cases. Since July 2022, 91 abortions have been done under the exception. Before that, elective abortions averaged 2,000-3,000 per month. Southern Baptist policy prohibits female pastors Delegates with the Southern Baptist Convention gathered over the last week for their annual meeting. Delegates considered changing the denomination's constitution to permanently prohibit women from serving as pastors. Sixty-one percent voted in favor of the amendment. However, a 66% majority is required to change the constitution. The Southern Baptist Convention's statement of faith limits the office of pastor to men. However, nearly 2,000 SBC churches have women pastors. Crime down across America The Federal Bureau of Investigation released a report on crime during the first quarter of this year. Violent crime was down 15% compared to the same period last year. Other crime rates also decreased. Reported rapes were down 26%, robberies were down 18%, aggravated assaults were down 12%, and property crimes were down 15%. A third of Major League Baseball has not affirmed sexual Perverse Pride month Many sports teams show their support for so-called Pride month in June. However, about a third of Major League Baseball teams have not shown that support on social media. The Christian Post notes those teams include the Atlanta Braves, Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox, Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Guardians, Houston Astros, Miami Marlins, Oakland Athletics, San Diego Padres, and Texas Rangers. However, many teams still find other ways to show support. The unique communication of African elephants Scientists have discovered that African elephants communicate with each other on an individual basis. Elephants use low-frequency rumble calls to communicate. They're out of range for human hearing but can travel long distances. The new research found the animals even have unique calls to address specific elephants. Biologist Mickey Pardo noted, “The elephants responded much more strongly, on average, to playbacks of calls that were originally addressed to them relative to playbacks of calls from the same caller that were originally addressed to someone else.” Psalm 104:24 says, “O LORD, how manifold are Your works! In wisdom You have made them all. The earth is full of Your possessions.” Newscast listener: “My wife plays The Worldview for the boys.” Last night, I picked up the phone and called Troy in Horseshoe Bend, Arkansas who gave $25 toward The Worldview's month-long fundraiser to finance the 6-member team for another year. I asked him what motivated him to make a donation. TROY: “My wife plays The Worldview for the boys, for their homeschool in the morning. We have eight kids total, but we have four boys at home that she's homeschooling. So, we listen to that every morning with them and just wanted to support another good cause.” Troy listed the ages of his eight children. TROY: “I've got three girls out of the house. They're 27, 25, and 22. And then we have four boys in the house that are 11, 9, one turned 8, and then a 6-year-old. And then we have a 9-month-old girl, also.” He explained the kind of stories he likes the most. TROY: “We like to hear about our brothers and sisters [in Christ] over in other countries instead of just the junk that's on the mainstream media news. We like to hear about people we can be praying for. And my boys get to see that life isn't at all as easy as we have it over here in the U.S.” 18 Worldview listeners gave $3,125 Toward our $57,100 mid-point goal tomorrow, June 14th, 18 Worldview listeners made a donation yesterday online. Our thanks to Jonathan in Hartwell, Georgia, Charles in Sandpoint, Idaho, Troy in Horseshoe Bend, Arkansas, Rob in Annandale, Virginia, and Ann in Austin, Texas – each of whom gave $25. We appreciate Russel in Antioch, Tennessee, Carla in Waverly, Alabama, Janet in Cecil, Ohio, Douglas in Galloway, Ohio, and Kevin in Scottdale, Pennsylvania – each of whom gave $50. We're grateful to Kerry in Parowan, Utah, Diana in Tamarac, Florida, George in Leesburg, Virginia, and Catherine in Spring Hope, North Carolina – each of whom gave $100. And we're thankful to God for Tim in Glen Ellyn, Illinois who gave $150, Danny in Abingdon, Virginia, and Curtis in North Augusta, South Carolina – both of whom gave $500 as well as Larry and Sue in Grand Prairie, Alberta, Canada who pledged $100 per month for 12 months for a gift of $1,200. Those 18 donors gave $3,125. Ready for our new grand total? Drum roll please. (sound effect of drum roll) $26,828 (audience cheering) By tomorrow night, June 14th, we need to raise $30,272 in order to hit our mid-point goal. If you haven't made a donation yet, we could really use your help right now to help fund the 6-member Worldview newscast team for another year. Whether you give a one-time gift of $25, like Troy in Horseshoe Bend, Arkansas, or a monthly pledge of $100 for 12 months, like Larry and Sue in Grand Prairie, Alberta, Canada did, we urge you to do something! It's a trip down memory lane as Jonathan and James sit down with their former student, John Biegel, who is now serving as the lead pastor at Cornerstone Evangelical Free Church in Annandale, VA. John recently authored a book, Offering and Embracing Christ: The Marrow Theology of John Colquhoun of Leith. Less well known than the famous “marrow man,” Thomas Boston, Conquhoun was a faithful Scottish minister and Calvinist whose life and preaching reflected the thought of the Marrow men on offering and embracing Christ. Colquhoun stands out as being especially indebted to Boston and Erskine and this whole stream of Marrow theology in a way that is unparalleled in the Church of Scotland at the time and really sets up what ends up being this evangelical revival in the Church of Scotland in the early 19th century. – John Biegel James and Jonathan are justifiably proud of their former student and commend his book to all, but in particular to anyone who feels the tension between the free offer of the gospel and particular atonement. For the opportunity to win a copy of John's book, thanks to the generosity of our friends at Reformation Heritage Books, enter here. Ben Wadler is a sculptor making pottery under the name Special Vessels. Borrowing forms freely from found and imagined architecture, comic books, video games, psychedelia, erotica, calligraphy, and cake decoration — Ben's pieces evoke a faux history that feels both sacred and silly. Reverent and irreverent. Ben likes to imagine the work serving as the first point of contact with an alien race, and how it would look in the vacuum of space. Until then, Ben listens for distant radio signals on WFMU, emanating from his home planet of New Jersey. Ben studied sculpture at the Royal College of Art in London, at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, and at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York. Ben is currently based in Vienna and Tel Aviv. http://ThePottersCast.com/988
