Cardy, Matt, and Dale have all been playing Doom: The Dark Ages and enjoying slicing demons in half with its buzzsaw of a shield. They also react to the new GTA 6 trailer and bring their latest theories to the table, as well as shouting out the snackable silliness of Promise Mascot Agency, the surrealism of The Rehearsal, slickness of Andor, and brain-breaking nature of The Devil's Plan. First things first: You won't get sick from touching a bag of S'noods! We're also coming at you with custard oatmeal, holiday mash-ups, and the many sides of the TikTok creator fund. We have a lot of thoughts about S'noods, their origins, and the sweet kugel flavor. Custard oatmeal is the new breakfast of champs around here. In 2007, Erica first tasted that literal slice of heaven known as a custard slice from a bakery chain in south Wales called Jenkins. It is two slices of rough puff pastry with a thick set heavy custard in between and icing on top. It's a variation of the original French dessert known as the Mille-Feuille (Napoleon Pastry). In this episode, we take Erica back to her first experience of it and her continuing love for it. Have you ever had a custard slice?

Like many activists, Peter Egan found his cause by chance. When a labrador named Custard collapsed outside the Downton Abbey actor's house, his wife jumped into action, taking the animal to a vet, and eventually the family adopted the dog. For Egan, this moment opened his eyes to the crisis of surplus pets in the UK, and it served as his initiation into advocating for animal rights. Peter Egan joined host Jay Ruderman to discuss the great number of organizations and animal rights causes he supports, from Saving Suffering Strays, to Animals Asia, to Animal Equality UK. They discuss a campaign to protect stray animals in Turkey that Peter is involved with, the ways that animals care for their well being, and the many ways Peter's personal relationships with animals shape and international activism shape each other. Erin is a cookbook author, recipe developer, and baker extraordinaire. She started baking as a young girl and put her skills to the test at the Culinary Institute of America. She's now published three award-winning cookbooks, all on baking, and hosts the binge-worthy series Bake It Up A Notch for Food52. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Food Network, Bon Appetit, Food52 just to name a few. In this episode of That Was Delicious, Brooke and Erin discuss everything you need to know about making fantastic homemade pie from scratch, including best practices for prepping and baking pie dough, rookie mistakes that people make when baking pie, some of Erin's favorite recipes (and her favorite pies for beginners), plus a healthy dose of encouragement for anyone who may be new to pie baking (spoiler alert: you got this!). Key Takeaways [04:18] Erin's love of pies started with family traditions and bonding moments with her grandmother over pie-making. [08:29] The communal nature of pie makes it an excellent opportunity to bring people together; it is inherently a "shared experience." [12:45] The "Sturdy Pie Challenge" is Erin's way of teaching proper pie-baking techniques to help achieve a stable, sliceable crust without sacrificing tenderness and flakiness. [15:52] The importance of par-baking (partially baking a crust) and blind baking (fully baking a crust) for achieving a sturdy and crispy pie base. [20:00] Chilling dough and understanding the role of butter temperature in achieving a flaky pie crust. [27:45] Allowing pies to cool at room temperature is essential for the pie to properly set and achieve the desired texture, even if patience is required. [35:29] Custard and cream pies are great starting points for beginners, as they are simpler to master compared to fruit pies. [45:55] The joy and creative fulfillment that come from baking, especially making pies, which Erin encourages everyone to explore. Notable Quotes (06:17) “Pie is really meaningful to me on multiple levels, and I've always wanted to spread the gospel of pie.” – Erin Jeanne McDowell (09:35) “When in doubt, chill it out.” – Erin Jeanne McDowell (32:04) “Don't be afraid of a deeply golden brown crust. There's a big difference between deeply golden and burnt.” – Erin Jeanne McDowell (45:30) “Baking in general is like muscle memory, and the more you do it, the less scary and more automatic it becomes.” – Erin Jeanne McDowell Resources Watch Erin's @food52 series, Bake It Up A Notch! In this episode, we sit down with Nicole Dannehl, the founder and visionary behind Nikki's Custard, a woman-owned, family-run business that launched in February 2022. Nicole's journey spans from Illinois and Iowa to Wisconsin and finally to Pennsylvania, where she has lived since 1993. Growing up in the Midwest during the 70s, she cherishes sweet memories of biking to local ice cream shops, which inspired her lifelong love for frozen desserts. After moving to central Pennsylvania, Nicole and her family noticed a lack of the nostalgic frozen custard they had enjoyed back home. This led to the creation of Nikki's Custard, where they aim to bring that Midwestern joy to their community with a modern twist on the classic "Mom & Pop" custard shop experience.Nicole is passionate about using high-quality ingredients and offers both traditional custard and non-dairy options, honoring her vegan family members. Nikki's Custard partners with local businesses to create unique offerings, such as custard-cookie sandwiches and fresh fruit sauces, reflecting her commitment to supporting the community. In this episode, we explore Nicole's entrepreneurial journey, her dedication to family and community, and her mission to create an inviting atmosphere for every customer. Join us for a delightful conversation filled with warmth, creativity, and the love of frozen treats!

The custard shop – with one on Chippewa and one on South Grand – has been in business for nearly 100 years and running the business for much of it was Ted Drewes Jr. He died earlier this week at the age of 96. St. Louis Magazine food writer Cheryl Baehr and listeners share their memories.
