The Bangkok Podcast | Conversations on Life in Thailand's Buzzing Capital
In a year-end wrap up, Greg and Ed discuss their favorite shows of the year and some plans for the podcast in 2025. Ed begins by waxing rhapsodic over his early year interview with David Cluck, Hollywood assistant director who has been based in Bangkok for the last 10 years or so (S7, Ep. 6-7). The flow of the interview was aided by the fact that David and Ed are friends, but Ed points out that it's rare to sit down with a friend and discuss their career in depth. As a film nerd, Ed (and Greg) enjoyed David's experience and insider storytelling ability. Greg then brings up our episode on Bangkok in your 20s vs. Bangkok in your 50s (S7, Ep. 29). Greg enjoys having pearls of wisdom about living in Bangkok that only come from having lived in Thailand so long, and Ed appreciated the way the city's pros have changed for him from the early days to his (now) fifty-ish lifestyle. Next, Ed mentioned his other favorite interview show, with Ron Weaver, ‘American-Thai Guy' (S7, Ep. 11-12). Both Ed and Greg enjoyed Ron's personality and insights, and the fact that his experience as an African-American guy gave him a different take on expat life in Thailand. Greg's next favorite episode was the one on ‘Expat Math,' our attempt to understand Bangkok with various theories and equations (S7, Ep. 16). There's no denying Bangkok's chaotic nature, but that doesn't mean it's completely random, and the guys enjoy trying to wrap their heads around the City of Angels and come up with some guiding principles. Ed's last favorite episode was his take on Bangkok vs. Hong Kong (S7, Ep. 24). As someone who doesn't travel all that much, Ed enjoyed being able to experience the iconic city and weigh it against his home. Greg wraps up the favorites by bringing up our show on ‘The Limits of Mai Pen Rai,' (S7, Ep. 40). Both guys agree this might be their ‘angriest' episode, but defend the right to put their foot down when it comes to inaction to solve problems that result in horrible tragedies, especially when they're in the service of improving safety for everyone. Last, Greg and Ed discuss their plan to use the last week of every month to air an old show, rather than putting out a new show every week. The truth is the guys need a breather to help them brainstorm new material, but also think listeners would benefit from listening to many of the old gems from previous years. Don't forget that Patrons get the ad-free version of the show as well as swag and other perks. We also sometimes post on Facebook, you can contact us on LINE and of course, head to our website (www.bangkokpodcast.com) to find out probably more info than you need to know.

As we approach Halloween, BOO!, it is only fitting we talk about FEAR, the fear of FAILURE *gasp* the horror, I know. This week I have the third installment and a fixture of this show, Edward Lynn, as the guest. He is a nurse by profession, but most importantly he has a deep passion, love, and calling to help others not just physically but mentally in growth and recovery. The fear of failure is much like a disease of the mind that affects everybody to different degrees. It's analogous to a cancer that infects the mind, and when left untreated can spread and become very destructive to our psyche. Many times it immobilizes people completely or other times it shows in dangerous micro or even overt aggressions. Both Ed and I get REAL AND RAW while we examine our journeys with understanding how we have processed failure and things we learned to help overcome the fear of it. The journey is difficult but with a willingness to grow and self reflect there is a light at the end of the tunnel for us all. Let's get there together! "The brain is an organ sculpted by experience." In this episode we sit down with Dr Ed Tronick, a pioneer in the field of child psychology and Dr Claudia Gold, a pediatrician expert and advocate for the study of parent-infant mental health. We've delved into the importance of early experiences before but in this episode we look specifically at one of the most powerful paradigms in child psychology, the Still Face Paradigm, which Dr Tronick discovered. Both Ed and Claudia make powerful arguments for why being able to move from states of mismatch and repair is vital when developing healthy relationships and how this need for repair is wired into babies right from birth. We also discuss how this paradigm relates to trauma and resilience; and how mental health, development and attachment are so closely related.

About the Hearing Matters Podcast The Hearing Matters Podcast discusses hearing technology (more commonly known as hearing aids), best practices, and a growing national epidemic - Hearing Loss. The show is hosted by father and son - Blaise Delfino, M.S. - HIS and Dr. Gregory Delfino, CCC-A. Blaise Delfino and Dr. Gregory Delfino treat patients with hearing loss at Audiology Services, located in Bethlehem, Nazareth, and East Stroudsburg, PA. The Lehigh Valley’s First Ear Mold LabIn this episode Blaise Delfino interviews Bob Holbroook and Ed Graham of ProtoCAM Additive Manufacturing in Allentown, Pa. Both Ed and Bob have extensive experience in the additive manufacturing field. (Additive manufacturing is more commonly known as 3-D printing.) Ed has been with ProtoCAM since 1996 after graduating from college as a polymer engineer. Bob owned his own injection molding company and began working at ProtoCAM After selling his business. ProtoCAM was Bob’s prototype, so his background combined with Ed’s engineering skills made for the perfect match. Together with CEO of ProtoCAM, Ron Belknap, the three have a total 75 years of experience. An Idea Meets Manufacturing Blaise met Ed and Bob at a conference where Blaise was giving a talk on Fader Plugs, the world’s first adjustable, mechanical ear plug, which he invented and patented. The ProtoCAM employees immediately wanted to get involved. They offered to help Blaise with the manufacturing of Fader Plugs. Prototyping BeginsBoth were excited to get involved in the project, however, Bob was hesitant about making the fine parts inside the Fader Plugs and their biocompatibility. However, they were able to overcome the anticipated problems and move forward. The filter was the start of ProtoCAM’s relationship with Fader Plugs. After several design iterations, Bob and Ed realized this was something that had never been developed before. Neither of them knew much about audiology in general, so it was a huge learning experience for everyone. After three iterations of the filter, it was recommended that the filter size be decreased. They did manage to decrease it by 67 percent; however, it did not function correctly. Turn-Around TimeThis technology will enable a turn-around time of only a couple of days. This is important because those that need Fader Plugs are construction workers, musicians, people with hyperacusis, or anyone around continual noxious noise. It is important to get people into Fader Plugs as soon as possible so they can preserve their hearing. New Lab is IntroducedAs a result of the partnership between Fader Plugs and ProtoCAM, the first ear mold lab ever in the Lehigh Valley has been introduced. This is groundbreaking. It is also something that ProtoCAM CEO Ron Belknap has always wanted to do: manufacture a product from start to finish. A Contribution to Society ProtoCAM is excited to be helping others maintain their hearing health. They are also very dedicated to their customers, in this case Fader Plugs, and want to manufacture only the best, highest quality goods. Also knowing that the entire product was invented and manufactured in the Lehigh Valley is thrilling.
“On the one hand, the cabinet minister has to understand that nature of the civil service role and the role of the permanent secretary as a leader alongside you… “But I think the permanent secretary also has to respect that the cabinet minister is not necessarily someone to be shaped in content or style to the previous way of doing things.” In this special episode, Sir David Bell and Ed Balls explore the minister-permanent secretary relationship. The two joined forces in 2007 at what was the Department for Children, Schools and Families – David as permanent secretary and Ed as secretary of state. They discuss first impressions and how they built a coherent team and vision together based on chemistry, trust, and openness, with plenty of fun thrown in there too. But it wasn't all plain sailing. From who gets an ICU bed to volunteering for a vaccine trial, ethics in the time of COVID is a complicated business. “Sometimes we fall into the trap of thinking that life is mostly ethically neutral unless we come across some catastrophe or other, or some really difficult moral choice. But when we look more closely - and this I think is what COVID has done - we realise that our values and our beliefs about the world, and what’s important, and who’s important, are making themselves present all the time.” Dan Fleming is the head of Ethics and Formation at St Vincent’s Health - so he’s been kept plenty busy this year. He speaks with Natasha about pandemic ethics - pandethics, if you will - including who gets prioritised when health resources are scarce, quality-adjusted life years, and what happens when a vaccine becomes available. Natasha also speaks with Ed O’Neill, an oncology researcher at Oxford University - who also put his hand up to be one of the first guinea pigs in the world for a COVID-19 vaccine trial. Both Ed and Dan draw on a particular ethical framework for the choices they’ve had to make in this pandemic year - one that conceives of people as made in the image of God, and centres on love of neighbour. “The neighbour to whom one is called first is the neighbour who's forgotten by everyone else. So today we might talk about priority populations, or poor and vulnerable groups. Different commentators use different language, so they might talk about the forgotten ones, or those who live on the underside … A unique feature of this framework is every person has the same value, objectively speaking. Every human person is enshrined in a special dignity. And that calls on us to think about, okay, well, in the context in which we find ourselves, whose dignity isn't being ensured? Whose dignity is not being served by our current context?”

We sat down with Ed Accura and Danielle Obe of the Black Swimmers Association to discuss how swimming can truly move toward being more inclusive. ***We did experience minor technical difficulties during this recording, and you will see Coleman/Braden's frames come in/out of the screen. However, don't let distract you from the important messages that Ed and Danielle deliver throughout the podcast.*** 1:11: Ed kicked things off with his journey of making the film "A Film Called Blacks Can't Swim", which has its worldwide release on Amazon June 26. The movie was one of the projects that spearheaded the founding of the BSA, and what inspired Danielle to seek out Ed and work with him. 18:20: Danielle is no stranger to trying to make the aquatic community more inclusive of Black and Minority Ethnicities (BME). She started her own company, My Nemes, with a mission "To provide a SIMPLE HAIR SOLUTION, one that gives the BME community the confidence to START ENGAGING in recreational aquatic activities". 26:41: Both Ed and Danielle give insight as to how the aquatic community can make changes so that the BME community feels included and encouraged to participate, and how the current Black Lives Matter movement in the USA and worldwide has affected their cause. The Drinking Partners welcome Jerry Dickinson, a constitutional law and property professor at the University of Pittsburgh and candidate for the Pennsylvania’s 18th Congressional District. Both Ed and Day are smitten with Professor Dickinson from the opening introduction and offer a ringing endorsement: he has an “electable face.” Speaking on the importance of defending democracy and being a champion for the people, Mr. Dickinson shares his own personal story, one that began in the Pittsburgh foster care system. Now, he seeks to be a “transformational leader,” one who will not accept corporate PAC money and supports grassroot movements. Listen in for a real conversation about policy and plans and a comprehensive discussion on how Mr. Dickinson wants to make certain that no residents of the 18th District are left behind. Stay tuned until the closing minutes to hear his 30-second elevator pitch and his favorite form of potato. To learn more about Jerry Dickinson, visit his website: www.jerrydickinson.com.

Both Ed and Day are thrilled when Justin offers to co-host in exchange for chicken. We chat to new podcast host and podcast friend Ben Brace on his new DWG Podcast, plus we talk Landscape architecture, what its all about and how the podcast is. here's abit from their website.."The DWG podcast aims to explore themes of research, education and practice, ideas of place, health and wellbeing, landscape's role in mitigating climate breakdown and biodiversity loss, re-wilding, green infrastructure and societal issues through the lens of landscape.Ben and Ed met way back in 2004 whilst studying Landscape and Garden Design at Writtle College University and have remained good friends ever since. Their careers have taken very separate but at times interconnecting paths, with both for example, having moved to Australia for a time and ending up working for different offices of the same company. Both Ed and Ben are Chartered Landscape Architects and have been working in the landscape industry for over a decade.Edward's career in landscape was sparked growing up on his family farm and following his qualification in Landscape Architecture he has gone on to explore the industry from the perspective of everything from commercial master planning to niche residential spaces. Throughout his career he has remained true to his roots valuing the local and sustainable and has gone on to build a landscape architecture practice that centres around these principles. He and his practice are also interested in landscape's role in health and wellbeing and much of his design work centres around these concepts. He is interested in the idea that good landscape design can be both sustainable, healthy (for person and place) and unequivocally beautiful all at the same time.Ben has been involved in the Horticultural industry since childhood. His passion for plants was forged whilst working on his parents market stall, selling plants and flowers to the folk of Romford. This led to him studying for qualification in Horticulture before embarking on his landscape journey at Writtle. Alongside his firm grounding in all things green, he is also interested in ideas of place and locality, specifically within food production and agriculture in the urban/peri-urban realm." See more at www.dwgpodcast.co.ukThanks so much for the support on this podcast.. Even if you share to just one mate this week id be so thankful! Nice one. much loveLee

He has been a police officer since 1981 and was previously employed in the cities of Boynton Beach, FL and Ft Lauderdale, FL. Among his other duties, he has written and administered grants dealing with high risk youth and their parents. Additionally, Ed has served in the capacity of a Beat Officer, Patrol Supervisor, Juvenile Investigator, Homicide Investigator, Domestic Violence Investigator, and the Police Department’s Director of the Employee Assistance Program.Jerry Williams has been a police officer for 33 years. We’re back after a nice break for the holidays and ready to get back to being insightful and unfiltered. In this episode we talked about the concept of “programming as craft” with Chris and Ed having a great discussion about what should follow after the phrase “programmers need to learn empathy.” Ed also released some music, and is donating all the proceeds to OSMI. Chris was sad that he did not get the opportunity to re-record the vocal tracks from some of Ed’s older material in his own signature vocal style. Chris also talked (not so briefly) about the new laptop he bought and the security measures he decided to take with it. Do these things!
