Ever wanted to quit your job and join the circus? Meet a man who did exactly that. Jack Lepiarz left his anchor post at NPR station WBUR in Boston, to follow his passion for circus performing. He even made it on “America's Got Talent” in 2022. I've been dying to talk to him about this transition: the highs & lows, as well as what it might say about our relationships with our jobs today. Also, OpenAI just revealed its latest innovation in voice technology. It's impressive, and extremely problematic. Still, I think there might be some hope for the future, particularly in how Gen Z is engaging with information. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/nightlightjoshua/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/nightlightjoshua/support

We're back for 2024, and the pod gets off to a rough start with a (ahem) technical issue.Once we get through that, Marko is impressed with how healthy Ox is looking. He was in the Whitsundays across New Years, he's tanned, looking good, and feeling great. But while the Whitsundays might be paradise, Ox had some weather issues which had an impact on the trip. May have been impacted by Ox drinking 100 beers on a boat. First world problem really.Ox and Marko are feeling old - their bodies are starting to cause some issues. Ox has discovered that he can't get out of bed sometimes, Marko feels sore everywhere, and Third Man has a sore shoulder, or is it a trap? We discuss the challenges of whipper-snipping and how it can be tough on your back. Marko wants feedback, do other people get this? We decide to explore first world problems, and ask Producer Daz to whip up an opener during the podcast...is Daz up to it ?Marko is quite active on the Couple of Blokes social accounts, Ox less so, but Ox has discovered that Marko has been careless and has been clicking follow, inadvertently, on some dodgy accounts. Marko is not convinced that the accounts he is following are dodgy, and believes they are genuine listeners to the pod. Ox disagrees.Producer Daz has come through with the goods with a big opener for First World Problems! Which we then explore. Ox has an issue with supermarkets, specifically the wording of some of their ads. Marko has a new car, and he's unhappy with the maps function and how it works. Cue small violin.Mid first world problems we get a call from family member Tracey, and Ox embarrasses the show by asking Tracey a hugely inappropriate question. However Tracey shrugs it off to pick up Ox and Marko on an error they made to do with Ox's mates dog. And Tracey has a question for Ox and Marko from the old SEN days about a regular caller. Marko and Third Man then have an intervention on Ox over his inappropriate question to Tracey.Back to third world problems. Marko's GPS in the new car. He's not happy with how it looks. On cars, Ox has a third world problem with servos.First show of the year, and we have some feedback from the family. Including one who uses the word arsehat. Great word. Ox believes cops should have the right to use the baton on sovereign citizens when they come across one. Hard to argue, they are genuine arsehats. In feedback we talk about a small Aussie crispy chilli oil company called DC Cartel, their stuff is great. Check it here.Ox tells a great story about Marko mispronouncing colonoscopy in public consistently, very funny. We have a question from family member Adrian with a 'Can We Still Be Friends' scenario. And in an own goal, we forgot to remove the Christmas joke category from the wheel, and so have a Christmas joke in late January. Embarrassing all round.Follow a Couple of Blokes and get involved with the show on social media: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and TikTok, or send a voicemail to Ox and Marko here. Subscribe, rate and review the podcast - and tell a friend about the podcast and help spread the word. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Climbing can be risky, and it's easy to overlook those risks when you've never experienced them first hand. You might hear stories of injuries or even fatalities, but until you experience something first hand you are missing a true understanding of the risks you are taking. Enter Colin Jokisch, a seasoned climber whose world changed after a near-fatal fall on an Arkansas roof crack. Colin's accident gave him PTSD, especially when using trad gear—a sentiment Max and I deeply understand. Like most of us his love for climbing didn't go away. Instead of choosing to quit the sport altogether or to never push his abilities again he pivoted to the art of rope soloing, finding it a safer way to tackle challenging trad lines. Today, we dive into Colin's harrowing experience, the mental, physical, and emotional toll of climbing accidents, and finally we cover the ins and outs of the elusive practice of rope soloing. - New Currency - Ancient and modern - Spencer - The Boys - Press Call - Crucifix - Calling the Whipper in - Arrival

On this episode of Love + Grit, meet two women making a monumental impact on the arts and education. Kimberly McGlonn’s sustainable clothing line and West Philadelphia storefront Grant Blvd sources reclaimed fabrics manufactured exclusively in Philadelphia and supports people who were previously incarcerated — one of the social issues this doctor of philosophy (and Jenkintown Borough council member) is most passionate about. Hosts Laiya, Rachel and Justin also welcome Dyymond Whipper-Young, a Temple University graduate and arts educator who most recently made national headlines for creating the biggest drawing in the world made by one person as part of the Crayola IDEAworks exhibit at The Franklin Institute. Hear more from these two inspiring guests making waves during Women’s History Month and beyond.
Julia speaks with nearly forgotten Australian folk singer Darren Hanlon, reading journal entries from their 2015 US tour with Courtney Barnett. Darren explains Australian terms like "whipper snipper," "school camp" and "schoolies week." A lot of what is said between them is lost in translation, as they struggle to communicate while coming from vastly different cultures and generations. Julia's energy and enthusiasm on this episode is somewhat low, and she will try to do better next time, but she would've been more prepared if Darren had gotten the time of their Zoom call correct.

It is another honor and privilege to have today’s guest on My Top Five Records podcast. Chris “the Whipper” Layton was one half of Stevie Ray Vaughn’s Rhythm section Double trouble. The way he picked his top five records was super cool. Not only did he play with Stevie but he and Double Trouble also joined forces with The Arc Angels and Storyville. Off with their heads! My recent love affair with the whipper snipper #grow
Recorded October 14, 2018 On any given Sunday, Luxun Park in Shanghai is a gathering place for everyone in the nearby residential areas. People come out to enjoy the weather, socialize, and exercise. You can hear hidden Saxophones tucked somewhere in the trees, KTV boxes with a flatscreen and an electric generator on a luggage trolley, several ballroom dance groups, and sometimes even the 'whippers'. Usually a group of men, the Whippers tote long, heavy chain-link whips with a piece of leather or plastic tied to the end that makes the 'crack'. The more experienced the Whipper, the longer and heavier the chain. Swinging these whips require alot of effort and so makes great exercise. On this day, there was a group of 5 -6 men that put on a little show for me. The leader had a really long chain and seemed like the the 'bad-ass' of the group he started whipping with a cigarette in his mouth. As the other men started to join, it was a whipping orchestra as each one whipped to his own tune. The amazing thing was that there was a point that they all started whipping in perfect unison. What an amazing day for recording that was. Recorded with (2)DPA 4061 binaural, SD 302, and WM-6DC.

Stephen Leimgruber and his wife were wrapping up a day at Fortress Wall in Kentucky's Red River Gorge. He wanted to do just one more climb. Some warning lights were flashing: They were tired, it was getting dark, clouds were threatening rain. But, hey, he thought: It's a well-protected 5.8. What could go wrong? Find out what exactly happened, and what Stephen learned from it, in this episode. The Sharp End is presented by Mammut, with additional support from Colorado Outward Bound School and Suunto. I go on a bit of a rant here. Jan is back with another question that got me going! Is Robert Parker still relevant? Let's discuss.

Well, that's what this latest episode would have us believe as Richard and Whipper steer their dead horse relaish* past Janet Reno's wattle, Ally and Georgia conspire to impregnate a client with a prisoner's sperm in the name of nuptials and we see a disturbing number of terrible bridesmaids dresses.
