Transaction Capital's position as South Africa's second-best wealth creator for shareholders (behind Capitec) over the past decade fell in a heap this month as the share price collapsed from R30 to under R10. A pre-results profit warning last Monday (13 March) triggered selling that accelerated as rumours took hold, resulting in the shares falling precipitously to a low of R8 on Thursday. The fact that CEO David Hurwitz sold a large chunk of his shareholding in December fuelled Mr Market's righteous indignation. In this candid interview with BizNews founder Alec Hogg, the embattled company's bruised CEO cuts to the chase, providing context and explaining why the company has aborted a significant stock issue (to buy more of WeBuyCars) because it believes the shares have fallen too far. It may well have been a case of buy on rumour, sell on fact for traders as Transaction Capital's share price fell 5% in the wake of the release of its financial results for the year to end September – that despite a 24% earnings rise and a 35% hike in the dividend payment. CEO David Hurwitz is unperturbed, projecting 20% plus growth into the forseeable future, the exponential expansion driven by exceptionally performing WeBuyCars (now 43% of group profit) and the debt collection and BPO division Nutun. In this results day interview with Alec Hogg of BizNews, Hurwitz multi-tasks his way to explaining why the future remains bright for the highly rated group – despite Mr Market's negative initial reaction to the published figures. German conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler (1886-1954) was one of the towering musical giants of the 20th century, a man whose near mythical reputation is arguably better known than his actual recordings. This year has seen a number of reissues of his recordings, the most signifcant of which is Warner Classics's 55 disc boxset featuring many previously unpublished recordings. For this special episode of the podcast we invited critics Rob Cowan and David Hurwitz to discuss the relative merits of Furtwängler's art, and how these legendary recording hold up in the cold light of 2021.Rob Cowan is one of the UKs best loved authorities on classical music, having written for Gramophone managazine for many years, and also hosted long-running radio shows on Classic FM and BBC radio 3. Based in New York, David Hurwitz is the co-founder and executive editor of ClassicsToday.com, and in 2020 launched his very popular YouTube channel on which he regularly posts video reviews and discographical surveys.

This week I held something of a cultural exchange programme with writer, vlogger, and musician David Hurwitz. Known to many from his reviews website *Classics Today*, the lockdown prompted David to start his very successful YouTube channel earlier this year, which has been gaining a global following ever since. On the show David chooses five of his favourite pieces of British music, I return the compliment with five American classics and we have a discussion peppered with David's inimitable no-nonsense approach and personal anecdotes. It's a highly entertaining show and a great way to end this first season of The Presto Music Podcast. Keep subscribed wherever you get your podcasts though, as we'll be back in the new year with more stimulating chat with the experts. Thankyou for listening to the first 10 episodes, and please do get in touch if there are any subjects or guests that you would like to suggest, at info@prestomusic.comYou can listen to the podcast right here on this page, or click on the links in the player (via the symbol of the box with the arrow coming out of the top) to find it in Apple, Spotify, Stitcher and other popular podcast apps, where you will be able to subscribe and receive notifications when new episodes become available in the future.
As a young boy, Richard Strauss went on a hiking trip to an Alpine mountaintop. Years later, his final tone poem would be inspired by this trip, the death of his dear friend and colleague Gustav Mahler, and the philosophies of Frederic Nietzsche. This piece was the focal point for several aspects of his life, and once he reached the summit of his career, he could return what felt most natural to him, home.
