John is joined by Yasmin Hirsi and Alex Burns of Our Streets Minnesota for a conversation in reaction to the Minnesota Department of Transportation announcing they will not include interstate removal as one of five options for further study when it comes to the future of I-94. We talk about the "up is down, black is white" analysis MnDOT is using (Urban interstate removal causes more air and noise pollution? Urban interstate removal is more dangerous for people biking, walking, and driving? What?). A recent former commissioner of MnDOT characterized the construction of I-94 this way: “we would never, we could never, build that kind of atrocity today." The historic harms, the racist effect and intent, the ongoing pollution, health and economic impact to people who had no say over I-94's construction or its imminent reconstruction, the flaws in MnDOT's analysis -- are well documented. So how come removal doesn't make the cut for further study? Our Streets Minnesota is asking people to get involved and contact state and local officials: https://www.ourstreetsmn.org/2024/12/20/mndot-plans-on-eliminating-boulevard-options-ignoring-elected-officials-and-community/ Recent coverage: "Little ‘Rethinking' Went into Rethinking I-94" https://streets.mn/2024/12/30/little-rethinking-went-into-rethinking-i-94/ "Rethinking Interstate 94 traffic modeling and the status quo" https://www.minnpost.com/cityscape/2024/12/rethinking-interstate-94-traffic-modeling-and-the-status-quo/ Watch: https://youtube.com/wedgelive Join the conversation: https://bsky.app/profile/wedge.live Support the show: https://patreon.com/wedgelive Wedge LIVE theme song by Anthony Kasper x LaFontsee

Representatives from the state and Minneapolis and St. Paul city councils sent a letter to the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) Tuesday morning asking it to incorporate recommendations to deconstruct a part of I-94. The request was led by OurStreets, an alternative transportation advocacy group. They put out a report last month detailing a proposal to make a seven-and-a-half mile portion of I-94 between Minneapolis and St. Paul a thoroughfare boulevard with more room for parks, houses and businesses. Alex Burns is leading the charge with OurStreets. He joined MPR News host Cathy Wurzer to explain the proposal.
Dave Klepaida was one of the good Samaritans who came to the rescue of Sam Orbovich after his car started on fire during an accident on I-94 in St. Paul.MPR News Minnesota Now producer Ellen Finn spoke with him for our “Thank You, Stranger” segment, a featured dedicated to those we do not know who make our day. Klepaida was driving his truck on its normal route on the evening of April 18 when he saw a car fire. He approached it, and noticed a handful of people were trying to pry the door open. That led him to believe someone was stuck inside. Orbovich had veered off the road and hit a pole. The driver side door was wedged against a freeway guardrail and he was trapped inside, unconscious. Quickly, the entire vehicle was engulfed in flames. People were hitting the window trying to break it open to rescue Orbovich. But, Klepaida knew they would not be successful. “People were using a fire extinguisher to try to break the window, but I knew that is not going to break the window, a car window will not break,” he said. “You can hit it with a hammer, but it is meant to take impact.”Klepaida said there wasn't really time to think as the flames were rising, but then it came to him — he needed a tool in his truck.Click here. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/0MMtb1IJPycHe always carries “the window punch” with him. It is a simple tool that shatters the window. Klepaida quickly broke the car window and helped pull out Orbovich.“We were at the right place at the right time,” he said.Klepaida says he wasn't prepared for how much attention the incident would get. The crash was recorded on a dashcam by Kadir Tolla and soon went viral. But he says despite the attention, it was just another day at MnDOT. “I'm just gonna get right back on my truck and go do my job,” he said.

Whenever you mix snowplows, winter storms, and motorists on the same stretch of pavement everyone needs to be at the top of their game in vehicles equipped for conditions. Most of the time folks get where there headed and the roads get cleared without incident. But, there are times when vehicles get tangled up with a snow plow and the outcomes can be catastrophic. On this episode we've got Jed Falgren, State Maintenance Engineer for the Minnesota DOT who's been involved in some really innovative projects to help reduce the number of interactions between snowplows and motorists from their CAV-Traveler Alert System to reflective materials and lighting. For more information on MnDOT's efforts to reduce crashes with snowplows and other slow moving maintenance operations you can reach out directly to Jed at jed.falgren@state.mn.usSign up for email notifications for future episodes and other communications from AASHTO's Winter Weather Management Technical Service Program at clicking on subscribe on the Talkin' Winter Ops website at TalkinWinterOps.comThanks for listening in and stay safe out there!
