Join John and Bill with special guest Jeff Greenstein of the smash hit I Dream of Cameras to talk about everything Leicaflex. Everyone connects the names Leitz and Leica with rangefinders, from the classic Barnack to the modern M-Series. And while that is what Leica is known for, they also saw that SLRs were becoming popular in the 1960s and decided to throw their hat into the ring. In 1964, they released the Leicaflex, an SLR based around their own R-Mount. The program dates back to 1955, when Ludwig Leitz was urged by Walther Benser to develop an SLR, as Benser believed SLRs would become popular. The Leicaflex was followed by the SL in 1968 and the SL2 in 1972. A technology-sharing partnership with Minolta in 1971 led to the introduction of the R-Series of Leicaflexes, starting with the Leica R3 in 1976. The R4 in 1980, the R5 in 1987, the R6 a year later, and then the R7. The 1990s brought a radical redesign of the R-Series with the R8 and R9. The entire series ended in 2009. The one thing to look out for is the R-Mount lenses; these come in several categories. One Cam lens works only with the original Leicaflex. Two Cam lenses are good for the SL and SL2. They will work on the R3, but you need to do stop-down metering. Three-Cam lenses are the cream of the crop, as they work flawlessly on the R3 through R9 and the SL/SL2. There's also the R-Cam for R3-R9 only, and the R-ROM for R8 & R9 only.

East Coast Radio's chief news editor, says the US Israeli war against Iran is only temporarily suspended and questions whether the ceasefire will last. He notes that optimism on Friday after messages suggesting Iran had opened the Strait of Hormuz and President Donald Trump thanking them reversed over the weekend, with renewed threats to close the strait and Trump warning he could destroy Iran's power infrastructure. Brent crude is trading around $95 a barrel, implying petrol could rise about R2.50 in May, though a possible continued R3 levy reduction could keep petrol flat; diesel is expected to rise about R8 per litre, or about R5 if the levy continues.

South Africans are facing an impending and massive R8-a-litre fuel price shock when prices are adjusted next month. This spike is a direct consequence of the prolonged war in Iran, which has driven the Rand cost of oil up by 40%, jumping from R954 to R1,328 a barrel. The higher oil price - now above $80 a barrel from below $60 a week ago - is significantly impacting global inflation expectations, triggering nervous trading on Wall Street overnight. Also in Today's Daybreak: Global and local markets are under pressure, with the JSE down 0.75%, mainly due to a 2.5% fall in resource stocks. The Rand opened at R16.60 against the US dollar. Gold and Bitcoin remain steady at $5,150 and $71,250, respectively. SA's Geopolitical Tightrope: ANC Top Seven member Nomvula Mokonyane visited the Iranian Embassy in Pretoria to sign a condolence book for the assassinated Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Professor Edward Minnie discusses how this brings South Africa's delicate position on the war into sharp focus. Iranian Succession & Trump: Donald Trump is insisting on being involved in the selection of the new Iranian leader and strongly opposes a "North Korean style" succession by the Ayatollah's son. However, the FT's Tehran correspondent reveals that Mojtaba Khamenei has already emerged as the leading candidate in highly confidential initial voting. Investment Strategy Insights: Piet Viljoen discusses his worldwide flexible 'Cockroach' fund. He shares his protective strategy of holding a high exposure to previously inexpensive energy assets to guard against unpredictable global events. He also unpacks Warren Buffett's approach to geopolitics and explains his allocation to cryptocurrency.

What truly changed at Le Mans when the 2000s began—and why did teams abandon open cockpits just as speeds stayed sky high? We invited author and photographer John Brooks to walk us through the decade he chronicles in Le Mans: The Official History 2000–2009, and his trackside vantage point delivers a rare blend of technical clarity and human detail. From Audi's R8 and R10 TDI era to Peugeot's blistering 908, we explore how diesel power, aero efficiency, and rule changes made reliability the ultimate performance edge.John pulls back the curtain on the engineering trade-offs that redefined endurance racing: the gains in safety that came with closed cockpits, the pit stop calculations that win 24-hour fights, and the unsung collaboration between European operations and American squads like Champion Racing. He also shares how he inherited the official history project from the legendary Quentin Spurring, why the 2000–2009 window stands on its own, and how writing the story with his own photographs turns a coffee-table book into a time machine. We keep the wrenches turning beyond the track. Jeff breaks down the easiest cars to work on—Toyota Corolla and Camry, Kia Rio, Chevrolet Silverado, Honda Accord, and Mazda MX-5—spotlighting accessible engine bays, abundant parts, and weekend-friendly maintenance. Then we climb into the 2025 Chrysler Pacifica, a thoughtful family hauler with stow-and-go versatility, a smooth 3.6L V6, available AWD, and cabin tech that keeps everyone calm mile after mile.If you're searching for Le Mans history, Audi vs Peugeot, prototype safety, and real-world car advice in one place, you're home.

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 14, 2025 20:04

In Part 7 of the JADEC Tour, Rob Tanner and Tony Mormino dig into one of YORK's latest innovations — the R8 compressor. Built to offset capacity losses from the transition to low-GWP refrigerants, this open-drive centrifugal design helps deliver up to 3,000 tons of cooling with an added efficiency boost from a unique economizer cycle. You'll hear how this innovation came to life in JADEC's labs, what it means for YORK's YK product line, and why even a few percentage points of efficiency can change the game in large-tonnage chillers.

¡a ver cuántos conoces! 1. Mercedes-Benz 130 (1934).

For this, the 68th episode of the World's Number One Open Source Film Photography Podcast, the gang invited our friend and film photographer Johnny Martyr to share with us his love of Leicas.  As is the case any time the topic of cameras made by everyone's favorite Wetzlar based company is mentioned, the Force™ beckons our own resident Leica Master, Dan Tamarkin, who also joins us on our first ever April Fool's Day episode! What is real and what is fake?!  Are Johnny and Dan really here or did Mike just find a really convincing AI voice generator?!  NO ONE KNOWS! Helping Anthony, Paul, Theo, and Mike differentiate between reality and imagination, are returning callers Bob Rotoloni, Mark Faulkner, Patrick Casey, Raymond Nason, and first time callers Alan Peres, and Brock's Garage! Starting off the episode, Johnny talks a bit about his business, shooting film and digital with his wife and what kinds of customers would hire a film photographer.  Of all the reasons someone might want a professional photographer, there is one type of gig that people tend to favor film more, but what is it?  Johnny also talks about how when he first got started, his customers struggled to differentiate his film shots from his wife's digital shots, so he sought out ways to come up with his own style. For the second episode in a row, Leica R SLRs have captivated the Camerosity Crew, and Paul, Mike, and Dan discuss all of Leicas different SLRs, and what they like about each one.  Mike recently shot three different Leica SLRs and clearly loved one over the others, but which one was it? Have you ever struggled loading film into bottom loading Leica screw mount (and similar) cameras?  Does trimming the leader to the necessary length cause you heartache and slow you down too much?  If so, Johnny has found a new type of take up spool that works in most screw mount Leicas (and copies) that greatly simplifies loading film into these cameras without having to trim the leader.  Enter Ausgeknipst, a small German company who 3D printed a new design that both Johnny and Mike have tested. Finally, Mike shares his thoughts on a camera he thought would make a good April Fool's Discussion because of how well it "fooled" the community upon its release, but strangely, he ended up liking it way more than he thought he would.  But what was it? As always, the topics we discuss on the Camerosity Podcast are influenced by you! Please don't feel like you have to be an expert on a specific type of camera, or have the level of knowledge on par with other people on the show. We LOVE people who are into shooting or collecting cameras, no matter how long you've been doing it, so please don't consider your knowledge level to be a prerequisite for joining! The guys and I rarely know where each episode is going to go until it happens, so if you'd like to join us on a future episode, be sure to look out for our show announcements on our Camerosity Podcast Facebook page, the Camerosity Discord server, and right here on mikeeckman.com. We usually record every other Monday and announcements, along with the Zoom link are typically shared 2-3 days in advance. For our next episode, rather than discuss a certain brand or type of camera, we thought it would be fun to discuss an entire decade worth of cameras, and what better decade to start in, but the 1970s!  Get out your hair picks, put on your bell bottoms, and spin up some Kiss records and call in to share with us your favorite 1970s cameras! We will record Episode 69 on Monday, April 15th at 7pm Central Daylight Time (-5 UTC), 8pm Eastern Daylight Time (-4 UTC), and Tuesday at 10am Australian Eastern Standard Time (+10 UTC). We look forward to hearing from you! In This Episode Johnny uses a converted 1930 Leica Model C converted to a III / Mostly uses the Leica M6 TTLs for most shooting in low light Shooting the Leica M6 With and Without a Meter / Paul does not like the Leica M3 Johnny and Mike met over a Konica III article, while he got noticed on a humorous M6 article People should shoot their own way and not try and impose on others Dan subscribes to Johnny's blog / Dan and a few others do not like the M3 viewfinder Paul prefers the M6 over the M6 TTL as it has more diodes Johnny also shoots with a Nikon FM2n and F2SB, but does not like the F3 / Anthony loves his FM2n Johnny had a shoot with Bill Clinton while he was working hybrid Clients don't really care if shooting film or not, they like the photos There is a market for film shooters / Mark had hired Johnny for his wedding Johnny moved to black and white to distinguish from digital / The has been more interest in film at weddings Dan has seen more people wanting to get in film / Most people won't know a Leica from a ratty old camera Wedding photographers get nervous seeing a Leica shooter Anthony wishes Johnny had shot his wedding / Theo's wedding photographer ran out of film Alan brought his Leica IIIf to Dan to have it CLA'd The Leica R virus has spread through the Camerosity hosts / Dan rarely sells R cameras but the lenses are in demand Dan caused Paul to buy 2 M10s / The M10 might be the last great Leica Paul tested the 7Artisans lens and it surprised him in quality People should like lenses because of their “flavor” / Each of the older Leica lenses is unique Paul suggests the Leica SL2 is a good starter in the SLR range Mike has fallen in love with the SL2 in 5 hours, didn't take to the R8 Theo though thinks the R8 is his favourite SLR he shoots Dan thinks the R8 is ungainly, the R3 is good for pounding nails The R6.2 is the pinnacle of the R series / Paul got a great haul of R equipment Some people wanted the Camerosity shirts off Mike and Paul's back!
