In many situations, assumptions equate with a certain level of trust - by assuming something, we're placing some confidence or assurance in it. However, when it comes to the ways of the human heart, assumptions can be deadly. Where it involves the core relationships between ourselves and others or ourselves and God, assumptions can literally destroy trust and create distance between us and those we care about most. If we don't learn how to grow our own curiosity and make room for alternative story lines, we can damage connections in ways we would never dream or desire. Today's episode walks you through the importance of having an open mind instead of jumping to conclusions, especially where it involves somebody with a difficult past or mental distress. Understanding how to ask more questions instead of thinking you have it all figured out will save you a world of pain moving forward. Join Hackaday Editor-in-Chief Elliot Williams and Managing Editor Tom Nardi for a review of all the tech that's fit to print. Things kick off with an update about the Hackaday Prize and a brief account of the 2022 Vintage Computer Festival East. Then we'll talk about an exceptionally dangerous art project that's been making the rounds on social media, a smart tea kettle that gave its life so that others can hack their device's firmware, some suspiciously effective plant grow lights, and the slippery slope of remote manufacturer kill switches. We'll wrap things up with some thought provoking discussion about personal liability as it pertains to community repair groups, and a close look at what makes synthetic oil worth spending extra on. Check out the links over on Hackaday.
Federal investigators in St. Petersburg are hot on the trail of another potentially offensive work of art. This latest culprit is a painting by Kirill Miller depicting a crowd of people carrying portraits of rotting, dead-eyed ghouls. Wounded members of the public say the piece, titled "The Living and the Dead," mocks the "Immortal Regiment" -- an annual march staged in many cities across Russia on Victory Day where participants carry portraits of ancestors who fought in World War II. Miller says his painting predates the Immortal Regiment tradition, which emerged less than a decade ago, but state officials seem keen to police this apparently unforgivable assault on the feelings of veterans and their descendants. Since the 1970s, armed with a 16mm camera and his curiosity, filmmaker and artist Charlie Ahearn was a pioneer chronicler of the nascent days of hip-hop and street culture in New York City. He soon migrated to movies including the super 8 kung-fu film The Deadly Art of Survival (1978) and the seminal Wild Style (1983) which documented the excitement of graffiti art and rap music and is recognized as the first hip-hop movie. Not limited to film, Charlie has also published books and created silkscreen paintings. A new solo exhibition, Scratch Ecstasy, is an exhilarating summation of his talents across mediums. The exhibit is currently running at New York's P.P.O.W. Gallery through June 24, 2017.
