With careful consideration, this will be the final episode of "Mars on Life." This was a difficult choice, but we have chosen to end our five-year run in pursuit of a new, refined show. Rest assured, we will all return. With returning guest Taylor Mewhiney, the boys return to the topic that started off the show, "American Dirt," as a new book by the author is on the horizon. We also return to "Velvet Buzzsaw" one last time, as well as what's the deal with Jake Gyllenhaal. We look back on what we accomplished, what COVID-19 took from us and what we anticipate for the future series still in development. Thank you to those who stayed with us for these wild times and we hope you continue to listen to us when we return. Goodbye for now, but stay tuned.Social media:Mars on Life: @marsonlifeshow on X and InstagramRyan Mancini: @mancinira (X) and @manciniryan (Instagram)Sebastian Schug: Seabass on YouTubeAndrew Martinez: @andrewomartinez (X)Matt Fernandez: @matt_fern (X) and @thewoodseyninja (Instagram)Artwork by Zachary Erberich (@zacharyerberichart)"Space X-plorers" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

*EDITOR NOTE: This episode was recorded in March of this year, and I am just now editing and releasing it. Glad to be back!* We have a return!!! Kari is back! She returned to the podcast to join me in discussing two movies. The 2022 comedy horror The Menu and the 2019 satirical black comedy horror film Velvet Buzzsaw. Both movies take a critical take on the art world and the culture of high-end dining. Few people enjoyed Velvet Buzzsaw, but I may be among the few who did. The Menu, however, had raving reviews from critics and audiences alike. Bring out fine China, look at some fine art, and remember to Stay alternative. The boys celebrate Ryan's birthday with another discussion on how one accomplishes landing a job with a college degree – or a master's degree and higher, more likely. Hopefully, brushing up on Barbara Ehrenreich's "Fear of Falling" will start to answer more questions for one of our intrepid cohosts who received it. Finally, Sebastian reviews "Velvet Buzzsaw." Nothing says Halloween more like the time-honored tradition of settling in for a scary movie. Kristen Meinzer is a culture critic and host of the podcast "By The Book" and Rafer Guzman is a film critic for Newsday. Together Kristen and Rafer are the co-hosts of the podcast, Movie Therapy, and they joined The Takeaway to give their picks for Halloween movie prescriptions for different occasions. KRISTEN'S PICKS: Movie prescription for a romantic night: Warm Bodies (2013) A zombie romantic comedy. After a highly unusual zombie saves a still-living girl from an attack, the two form a relationship that sets in motion events that might transform the entire lifeless world. Movie prescription for family viewing: Cruella (2021)Cruella isn't specifically a Halloween movie, but it has that Halloweeny goth vibe and loads of fabulous costumes...as well as our lead's fabulous disguise! Movie prescription for satire/comedy lovers: Velvet Buzzsaw (2019) A satirical horror comedy about the art world - from the snobbery to the wealth to all the people who take themselves way too seriously - starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Zawe Ashton, Rene Russo, Toni Collette, Daveed Diggs, Nitya Vidyasagar, Tom Sturridge, Natalia Dyer, Billy Magnussen, Mig Macario, and John Malkovich. RAFER'S PICKS: Date horror movie: Night of the Comet (1984) Little known horror-comedy from 1984. Great valley-girls-versus-zombies premise, fun cast (Dick Rude, Mary Woronov) and a rare Hispanic leading man. Cute, funny, scary and romantic. Joss Whedon cited it as one inspiration for “Buffy and the Vampire Slayer.” Horror movie with the kids: Gremlins (1984) I still love this movie, which I saw as a kid, and I was just delighted by it. During the pandemic, I rented a movie theater for my son's birthday, and this is what we saw. I was really happy to see them jump out of their chairs one minute and then crack up the next. Plus it takes place during Christmas, so it's really an all-fall holiday treat. Best ‘70s horror movie you probably haven't seen: The Brood (1979)Early David Cronenberg, an extremely weird movie about a divorce that leads to the psychic birth of demonic children who roam around killing adults. Great cast, with Samantha Eggar as a kind of queen bee of the demon-spawn, and Oliver Reed as the leader of a 70s self-help cult that goes too far. Cronenberg wrote it following his own divorce, and it came out the same year as Kramer Vs Kramer, hilariously. Roger Ebert called it “reprehensible trash.”

Not quite horror but an interesting movie with a murder mystery feel to it. To be blunt this movie is kind of odd and not what one would expect. However, the acting is well done with a story that is hard to predict. Listen in for our ratings and full thoughts on the movie. Thank you for listening and "Keep Streaming".

Time for the in-depth review of a film Sebastian really needs to see. If the episode title wasn't an indicator, Andrew and Ryan talk at *length* about the 2019 Netflix horror satire "Velvet Buzzsaw." Listeners well know this film by Ryan's countless references to it, but what is it about the movie that's so relevant? Who's its audience? Why bother with it all? What's the deal with Hoboman?" People in 2019 hated it, but it's arguably ingrained in this show's DNA. Come join us down a road filled with humor, critique, camp, homicide and vengeance. However, we highly encourage you watch "Velvet Buzzsaw" before you listen. Also, Ryan took a trip for the first time since 2019! Episode timestamp 12:19 Today, the chart squad felt like trying new things, so we would like to inaugurate a new series of videos in our podcast where we review art related movies. Our inaugural choice? None other than Dan Gilroy's Velvet Buzzsaw! Released in 2019, it is a satirical horror movie about the moral and physical consequences for everyone involved after a blue chip gallery in L.A. decides to sell the work of a deceased artist against his last will. Backstabbing, intrigue, love, deception… Anything can happen behind the scenes of the glamorous art world. However, how much of it is fiction and what is actually pretty realistic? We will let you know this and more in this week's episode! For email enquiries: chart podcastgmail.com Make sure to follow us on our socials! The Ghouls are back with special guest, Simon, just in time for Black History Month! The gang screened HORROR NOIRE: A HISTORY OF BLACK HORROR directed by Xavier Neal-Burgin on Shudder. On this episode, Ghoul Chat discusses the uncomfortable racial undertones, stereotypes and tropes that permeated black history in horror cinema from the early years of BIRTH OF A NATION to the recent GET OUT directed by Jordan Peele. The team reviews what's new in the genre world before diving into the main topic; Alexz, Jeanette and Simon give a quick, spoiler free review of GLASS. No one really cared for the artsy horror show that is VELVET BUZZSAW. Will and Jeanette started watching Netflix's new zombie horror series KINGDOM. Lastly, everyone discusses their latest binges in true crime docs: the appalling ABDUCTED IN PLAIN SIGHT and transfixing and f**ked up TED BUNDY TAPES, along with the backlash of the corresponding trailer for EXTREMELY WICKED, SHOCKINGLY EVIL AND VILE (why is the title this long?)
