What is art, and who gets to define it? The Convergence x Crossroads: Street Art from the Southwest exhibition at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque provides an entry point to this conversation.  Former National Hispanic Cultural Center curator Rebecca Gomez and street artist Strike have a lot to say about the challenges and contradictions inherent to creating a street art exhibition. By bringing street art into a museum setting, the exhibition challenges stereotypes, blurs the boundaries between gallery art and street art, and invites viewers to reflect on what it means to create art in the face of some of life's biggest challenges.  Mentioned in this Episode:  Convergence X Crossroads: Street Art from the Southwest  Gil Rocha Mexic-Arte Museum in Austin, Texas South Broadway Cultural Center in Albuquerque Murals in Barelas Neighborhood in Albuquerque Illegal? On today's show, things get messy in NFL Week 2 as upsets abound. Most of our top tier Super Bowl contenders, including the Cowboys, the Lions, the Niners and the Ravens all lose to underdogs, but the Bengals had the dubious distinction of losing to the defending champion Chiefs and Mahomes. But the dog show we got early made for perfect viewing, with the unbalanced 10 early/3 late slate, we got to keep up with all of the upsets on RedZone early, then focus on Bengals/Chiefs  late. And now the questions start to pop up; what do we make of an 0-2 Ravens squad, or an 0-2 Bengals, or all of the Rams injury woes, or Dallas getting mollywhomped at home? Plus, passing yards and scoring are down, running yardage is up, are we seeing the newest trend in NFL offenses? We'll look to Week 3 to provide answers. . . So sit back, the NFL season is underway and we're breaking down how it's all unfolding, next on the Roundup Podcast so let's get rolling . . .

On Thursday's show: The Biden administration has announced it's devoting $1 billion to develop clean hydrogen energy. What could that mean for the Houston area, which is expected to be home to a future hydrogen hub? Also this hour: We learn about the extraordinary measures structural engineers had to develop so that skyscrapers could be built on Houston's mushy soil. Joe Colaco, one of the engineers responsible for that -- a man who has worked on some of the world's most recognizable buildings -- explains how it works. Then, it's quickly become an annual symphony tradition – performing a major film score live, in sync with a screening of the movie. The Houston Symphony is doing it with Harry Potter July 14-15 and Star Wars July 28-29. And the Houston Museum of African American Culture and Emancipation Park Conservancy are screening a couple of classic hip-hop films -- Wild Style, Beat Street, and House Party. We talk about those films, the history of hip-hop culture, and Houston's unique place in that culture.

The season one finale takes us right back to the days I spoke about in Episode #1. It's 1983, and my final days living in Germany are upon me, before permanently moving back to the United States. This is the story of one of the last movies I was able to see before leaving, Star Wars Return of the Jedi, and the one I learned I was going to have to miss because of that same move, Wild Style. How much influence that factor had on the Wild Style Soundtrack becoming one of my all-time favorite albums I don't know, but the importance and brilliance of that album still drives me to listen to it regularly to this day. Plus, as a young inspiring MC, the performances of Grandmaster Caz, Prince Whipper Whip, Shock Dell, Rammellzee, and especially Lil Rodney Cee, were monumental. Plus, as an avid fan of the art of DJing, the sounds of Grandmixer D.st, Grand Wizard Theodore, and DJ Charlie Chase, the focus on the turntable on this soundtrack had an additional impact.

Since 1977, legendary MC Busy Bee has been rocking crowds and smoking loud as one of the true originators of hip hop music, style and culture.  He was there for the earliest rap battles and the arrival of blunt smoking, starred in the movie Wild Style and sold loose joints of Acapulco Gold–all a decade before Snoop and Dre released The Chronic. In this interview, we discuss how he's stayed true to hip hop's original mission of bringing "peace, love and unity" through music, how outlaw weed culture and underground hip hop have evolved over the years, and how he learned to grow his own "fire" weed from a bunch of hillbillies up in Northern California. Hey everybody, I'm Greg Sowell and this is Why Am I, a podcast where I talk to interesting people and try to trace a path to where they find themselves today. My guest this go around is Lady Pink. Pink is known for a lot of things: she was an accomplished graffiti artist, she's potentially a hip-hop icon as the lead in the defining movie Wild Style, BUT those are all just origin stories; she defines herself as an artist. I quickly realized that she is a person that knows their purpose and power, so I had better not mess around, but I also learned that she adores kids and gives a LOT of herself and a lot of her time to growing and nurturing them. I love that dichotomy; she's my kind of people. I hope you enjoy this conversation with Pink. How many people would be willing to risk it all to pursue their dreams? Today's guest, Danish artist https://shop.mikael-b.com/ (Mikael B)., packed his bags and flew to LA after selling the graphic design company he started with his twin brother.  In 2014, while Mikael was working as a graphic designer, he created a colorful map to hang in his Copenhagen apartment. That work, “Vibrant World,” went viral after being posted online, spurring global demand for Mikael's prints and providing a launchpad for the artist's budding career. Encouraged by the response, Mikael and his brother sold their graphic design business and moved to LA to focus on art-making—and the rest, as they say, is history. Blending Cubism with Wildstyle graffiti, Mikael began splashing his designs all over LA soon after arriving. Today he works with brands like American Express and Bentley Motors to create eye-catching projects and public murals that brighten the city. He credits his success to his brother's business savvy, describing their partnership as “yin and yang.”  In today's podcast episode, NOT REAL ART founder and publisher https://www.notarealartist.com/ (Scott “Sourdough” Power) sits down with Mikael B. to discuss how the young artist took control of his creative career. You'll get a glimpse into Mikael's creative journey, from Denmark to The City of Angels, and hear about his ongoing commitment to creating work he loves—not just art that sells. We also touch on the role social media plays in Mikael's success, how to embrace the unknown with enthusiasm, and what you can learn from the crossover between fine and commercial art.  Ultimately, Mikael believes taking an extraordinary leap of faith enabled his creative success. The artist shares a powerful and inspiring story about sacrifice, commitment, and vision—tune in today for insight from the intrepid artist. Key Points From This Episode: Mikael's introduction to art-making via graphic design How he felt called to express himself authentically rather than building corporate brands Why he describes his partnership with his twin brother as “yin and yang” The story of how "Vibrant World" went viral and kickstarted Mikael's journey as an artist The role that social media played in enabling Mikael to take control of his own career Some of the sacrifices he had to make in order to get his business off the ground in LA What you can learn from the crossover between the commercial and fine art worlds. How Mikael has been inspired by graffiti and how it has influenced his signature style The value of embracing the unknown and getting out of your comfort zone Strategies from his agency days that Mikael applies to building his personal brand The importance of staying true to yourself: why Mikael paints what he loves, not what sells The dedication and commitment it takes for ordinary people to do extraordinary things How taking this leap of faith enabled Mikael to become a better version of himself Insight into his daily routines and rituals, from regular exercise to meditation and practicing gratitude, and how they contribute to his success How you can benefit from prioritizing self-care as a creative practitioner What's next for Mikael B, including his upcoming solo exhibition!
