Seit 2012 sprechen Frank und André im GlotzCast über die ganze Welt der Filme. In der 200. Ausgabe geht es u.a. um den diesjährigen #Japanuary, also die jährliche Film-Challenge, die dazu anregt, verstärkt japanische Filme zu konsumieren und zu besprechen. Außerdem: Aktuelle Kino-Hits, warum der neue "28 years later"-Film zu floppen droht und das Comeback von "Wetten Dass?!"

Podcast über die Montags (OV) Sneak im Metropolis in Frankfurt am Main. Wir lieben nicht nur das Kino, sondern auch das Heimkino. Auch wenn es nicht immer Podcasts dazu gibt, Filmabende haben bei uns wenig überraschend Tradition. Besonders spannend ist dabei wie man einen solchen Abend filmisch zusammen setzt. Mehrere Teile von oder eine komplette Filmserie wie Star Wars, ausgewählte Werke eine Regisseurs oder Darstellers oder wie immer an Halloween mit Horror, mehrere Filme eines bestimmten Genres. In Double Features widmen sich Malte und Helena genau dieser Herausforderung. Das Besondere dabei? Wir suchen jedes Mal unabhängig voneinander zwei Filme zu einem bestimmten Thema. Also Filme die nicht offensichtlich zusammengehören, zwischen denen man jedoch eine inhaltliche Brücke schlagen kann. Dem Aufruf von Schöner Denken folgend wollten wir als notorische Japan Fans dieses Jahr gerne einen Beitrag zum Japanuary leisten. Mit einer Aufnahme am 31.01. und einer Veröffentlichung im Februar dürft ihr gerne urteilen ob uns das gelungen ist. Inhaltlich haben wir beide einfach Filme mitgebracht, die wir uns unbedingt zeigen und euch vorstellen und empfehlen wollten. Es dauert nicht lange, bis man vergisst, dass man einen Animationsfilm schaut – so greifbar und lebendig sind die Figuren, so perfekt sind die „Kameraeinstellungen“ und so real ist die Stadt Tokio. Düster und komisch, spannend und immer schneller erzählt Satoshi Kon die Geschichte von drei Obdachlosen. Drei gescheiterte Figuren, die ein Baby finden und sich auf die abenteuerliche Suche nach den Eltern des kleinen Mädchens begeben. Dabei kommt es immer wieder zu magischen Zufällen und urkomischen Situationen. Aber das hier ist kein harmloses Weihnachtsmärchen: Spielsucht, Alkoholismus und Selbstbetrug sind genau so wenig zu übersehen, wie Jugendbanden, die aus Langeweile mit Stahlrohren auf die Obdachlosen einprügeln. Cooler blaugrauer Thriller-Look, Geheimagenten, Killer, Yakuza, schöne Frauen, Schauplatz Tokio und Gary Oldman als Star – das war der Speck, mit dem ich mich habe fangen lassen. Also Bluray gekauft und im Japanuary geschaut. Bei RAIN FALL handelt es sich um ein westliches Drehbuch, nach einem westlichen Roman, von einem westlichen Regisseur inszeniert. Das Ergebnis: Ein Reinfall! Jason-Bourne-Versatzstücke, dazu eine Portion In-the-Mood-for-Love für Arme. Nichts an diesem Film ist organisch oder authentisch, Tempowechsel aus der Hölle und schlecht choreographierte Kampfszenen. Und mit dem Potential von Gary Oldman wusste der Regisseur nichts anzufangen. Man kann förmlich die Linien und Narben sehen, an denen die verschiedenen Klischees und Stereotype zu einem Film zusammengenäht worden sind – ein Film wie aus Dr. Frankensteins Labor: Es bewegt sich, aber es lebt nicht. Fünfter und letzter Film im Japanuary2025: TOKYO-GA von Wim Wenders ist eine Wallfahrt zum heiligen Ozu – einerseits mit Schwächen, andererseits mit großartigen Begegnungen und Interviews. Thomas hat im Podcast Lieblingsgast Lucas Barwenczik vor dem Mikrofon.Wim Wenders hat sich 1983 nach Japan aufgemacht – auf der Suche nach dem Tokio seines großen Regie-Idols Yasujiro Ozu. Dessen stille Filme mit klarer Form sind weltweit bekannt. Ozu beschäftigte sich stark mit Familienbeziehungen und den schwierigen Veränderungen Japans nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg. Mit Veränderungen hat Wenders in TOKYO-GA aber so seine Probleme: Er fremdelt unübersehbar mit dem Boom-Japan der 1980er Jahre – zu laut, zu bunt, zu modern, zu schnell, so gar nicht wie in Ozus Filmen. Dabei bleibt er überraschend oberflächlich, spricht nicht mit gleichaltrigen japanischen Kolleg:innen oder anderen Japanern.Aber er führt zwei beindruckende und berührende Interviews: mit Ozus Kameramann Yuharu Atsuta, der sein ganzes Berufsleben mit Ozu verbracht hat und Einblicke in Ozus Inszenierungsarbeit gibt – und mit Chishu Ryu, dem großartigen Schauspieler, der in fast allen Ozu-Filmen vor der Kamera stand und über die Maßen bescheiden ist. Allein für diese beiden Gespräche lohnt sich der Film.      This week Japanuary comes to a close with three films by the prolific master Takashi Miike.     Leo is a boxer climbing in the middle of a great win streak. When his doctor tells him he has an inoperable brain tumor and only a short time left. Kase, an ambitious yakuza, and Ōtomo, a corrupt cop, plan to steal drugs and frame Yuri, a trafficked young woman. When Leo hears Yuri call for help, he figures he has nothing to lose and intervenes. Things spiral from there. A thrill ride through alleys and sporting good store massacres, First Love.     Manji, an ageless immortal drifting through under a traumatic loss, is hired to be the bodyguard for Rin, an orphan on a quest for revenge. Rin's father was murdered by the Itto-ryu, a group of samurai assassins seeking to bring all schools of combat together under them, and their leader Kagehisa Anotsu. This live action adaption of a successful manga and anime series is also Miike's 100th directorial effort, Blade of the Immortal.     It has been a decade since Iwao sacrificed his eldest son to settle a dispute with a rival gang. Now younger son, Riki, is getting revenge. Riki also happens to be the head of a gang of startlingly young assassins, who have the leaders of his father's gang squarely in their sights.  Buckets of blood flow, killer darts are fired from undergarments, preteen gunmen, games with unusual balls, and a biker who like a good scrap- Fudoh: The New Generation.      Join us, won't we?   Episode 345- Takashi's Castle

     This week Japanuary 2024 kicks off with a pair of films about bold, strong women who refuse to compromise to their oppressive societies and the idiots they love.     Kinta is put in charge of his Yakuza gang's pig farm and dreams of the large paydays that were vaguely promised. Haruko, his girlfriend, works as a waitress and dreams of getting away from their port city that only lives on the whim of the nearby American Navy base. When Kinta's bosses push him to be the fall guy in a murder and Haruko' mother pushes her to be the paid mistress of an American business man. Shōhei Imamura's breakthrough work and a masterpiece of the Japanese New Wave, Pigs and Battleships.     On Jeanne's wedding night, the local baron and his courtiers brutally violate her in a ritual deflowering. That night she begins to see visions of a phallic spirit that offers her power and her fortunes rise until they lead to ever increasing clashes between Jeanna and the ruling class. Mushi Production's final entry in their Animerama series of adult animations with gorgeous watercolors designed by Kuni Fukai, Belladonna of Sadness.     All that and Dave sings a jaunty tune, Kevin closes the books on last year, and Tyler unfurls his hoard of Japanese erotic cinema. What's up Dream Warriors! It's finally time to wrap up Japanuary and get back to our usual chaos of just watching whatever the hell we want! To end the month and our first Villain Faceoff of 2023, we're watching a lesser known Kaiju movie called Gamera: Guardian of the Universe! One of us thoroughly enjoys this one and one of us is very much on the fence, but we can both agree it's a ridiculous and fun movie. The faceoff didn't quite end how we expected so we have to go to desperate lengths to find out who wins based off of our format, even though we know who actually would if these 2 went at it. What's up Dream Warriors! It's time for part 2 of our Japanuary and we're coming at you with Brooke's pick of Pulse from 2001 (not the critically shit on remake)! This was a first time watch for both of us and we were very divided on this movie, although Brooke did begin to lay the foundations of Marc coming around on it. There was a good discussion regarding the mental health aspect of this film and a point that Marc didn't really pick up on with a first watch. It has been mutually agreed upon that we'll be giving this a second and possibly even a third watch in order to fully grasp everything that was laid out in front of us. Next week we'll be discussing a movie that won't require so much thought and picking apart, as we'll be discussing one of the 500 Godzilla movies (which one has yet to be decided).
