I was a teenager when I picked up the guitar, and suddenly, I had the one thing I'd been looking for to craft the songs I'd been waiting to write. -Sarah Blacker This up-close and personal interview was recorded in my living room with a singer/songwriter who grew up down the street. We met when she was a teenager…and a friend of my daughter Colleen's. Years later, Sarah Blacker continues doing what she loves best: bringing comfort and joy to audiences large and small as a dynamic live performer. Heralded by the Huffington Post for her “infectious, well-written songs,” Sarah was named the 2024 Female Performer of the Year by the New England Music Awards. But there's so much more to Sarah's story because she harnesses the healing power of music as a Board-Certified Music Therapist and LMHC or Licensed Mental Health Counselor. Explains Sarah: “Listening to music can open up neuro-pathways. Music is magic. It gets us high. Sometimes, when I'm sitting there with Alzheimer's patients, my mind is blown, and my heart is exposed because I know that music is what unlocked a patient's memory.” A graduate of the Berklee College of Music, Sarah discovered music therapy during a tour of the school and realized that this academic path encompassed everything she had always loved about music. A survivor of life on the road as a musician, Sarah misses the audience but not the grueling schedule of an independent musician. “I lived on Dunkin Donuts for days, all for the love of music and those glorious moments when I got to be on stage, pouring my heart out, trying to connect with an audience.” The daughter of two music lovers, Sarah says that music was always playing at her house. “My dad had the greatest music collection of all time, everything from Paul Simon and Pink Floyd to Tubular Bells, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Seals & Crofts. My mom would make up her own silly songs. It was a creative household.” As a teen, Sarah's musical role models were all- female, including Tori Amos, Joni Mitchell, Fiona Apple and Paula Cole. Learning to play the guitar is what completed Sarah Blacker as an artist. Says Sarah: “It was like opening the gates to everywhere I ever wanted to go.” For an inspiring 24-minute musical journey, just hit that download button. #music #musictherapy #songwriter #singer

Jo and Adam reflect on their recent experience of venturing to a special screening at York Picture House Cinema on Halloween night to watch a film so disgusting viewers have been reported to have left the cinema to be sick. The film is The Substance, and Adam and Jo are here to analyse its satire. Heralded as a satire on female beauty standards, we wonder if it is actually having too much fun laughing at grotesque caricatures of the ageing female body? Is patriarchal capitalism really the target, or is it the vanity of Demi Moore's character for hoping she still had a place in it? Intergenerational conflict is also the theme of our second study in this episode: Ben Wheatley's Generation Z, which announces itself as a 'satirical horror series in which Baby Boomer Zombies eat their relatives' -- but is that really all that is going on? Also, Jo and Adam talk about the role of satire during the American presidential election, and the suggestion that big tech should use AI to label online content as satire.

About the Guest: Georgina Banks is an author and former actress who transitioned into writing to explore and document poignant historical narratives. Heralded as a "first-time writer, longtime storyteller," she published her first book, "Back to Bangka: Searching for the truth about a wartime massacre - A family story," at 40 plus, which uncovers a harrowing war-time story involving her great aunt. Georgina also has a background in applied psychology and runs a consultancy business. Her writings focus on the themes of history, personal reflection, and the feminine experience in war. Her work has brought attention to forgotten and untold stories, inspiring others to explore their family histories and pursue their passions. Key Takeaways: Georgina Banks' book is not just about documenting history; it's about exploring ambiguous loss, storytelling, and familial silence. The thorough research process included examining official war records and family artifacts, highlighting the challenges and dedication involved in writing historical non-fiction. The episode underscores the damaging impact of airbrushing historical truths, particularly around sensitive subjects like sexual violence in war. Georgina encourages pursuing passions and challenging self-critical thoughts, emphasizing the liberating power of reframing fear and ambition. Through personal anecdotes and family history, the episode celebrates women who make powerful pivots later in life, redefining their narratives and achieving personal milestones. Notable Quotes: "I felt very determined to find out what happened because I really felt this... sense of justice... to speak up on my great aunt's behalf." "What do you want to look back on? What sort of life?... I say you really, you want to tap into that and live out of your values and what gives you meaning and joy." "Imagine yourself at the end of your life. What do you want to look back on?... Live out of your values and what gives you meaning and joy." "Punch the critic who's talking to you inside your head. What's the worst thing that's going to happen? You might embarrass yourself. Big deal." "Please do not let fear run your life... I say go for it. Treat it like you don't know if you'll be successful. You've got to do it for the love of it."   Click here to contact Janet & Amelia or ask them a question or click here to contact the She Wasn't Born Yesterday team! Send us a Text Message. On this episode, we tackle a BIG album, the 1967 debut LP by the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Are You Experienced. Heralded by many as the greatest rock guitarist of all time, to many Jimi Hendrix, along with his band the Jimi Hendrix Experience (bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell) seemingly came out of nowhere. However, in reality, Hendrix more than paid his dues, playing in relative obscurity backing a myriad of musicians on the "Chitlin' Circuit," including the Isely Bothers and Little Richard.  Endlessly restless, his stints with these bands was often short lived because he would eventually tire of being in the background and get fired for upstaging the star he was hired to support.  He was finally "discovered" in New York by Chas Chandler (bassist of the Animals) who convinced him to go to England where he finally found the success that had alluded him in his own country. But Are You Experienced  proves Hendrix was more than just an amazing guitarist. It showcases what a gifted singer (if a shy and underappreciated one) and  songwriter he was. It underscores his imagination and creativity in how he used the studio in his quest to find new sounds from his guitar. After its release, Hendrix became a star and would eventually become the highest paid rock musician of the era.  While he would continue to stretch the boundaries of what both the guitar and  the studio could do over his next two LPs, Are You Experienced  is where it all began, and the the music within sounds as innovative and imaginative as it did in the over the five-plus decades since its release. Visit us at www.tappingvinyl.com.

Rapid advancements in technology and science are shaping a new era, with artificial intelligence and synthetic biology, or “syn-bio,” at the forefront. Heralded as the next big leap in science, syn-bio involves redesigning organisms for useful purposes by engineering them to have new abilities. The importance of syn-bio for people and our planet cannot be overstated. It offers novel ways of producing almost anything that human beings consume, from flavors and fabrics to foods and fuels. Today, the combination of syn-bio and AI – two of the most potent realms of science and technology – promises to unravel solutions to our most pressing challenges, including Earth's food and water, the environment and sustainability, bioenergy, and human health care.  One widely recognized trailblazer in syn-bio is Jim Collins, professor of medical engineering and science and professor of biological engineering at MIT. He is also a core founding faculty member of the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University. In the latest episode of the “Ideas to Innovation Season 3” podcast from Clarivate, Collins helps listeners navigate through the exciting but complex landscape of syn-bio. He also discusses what it was like to be named a Citation Laureate 2023 for his pioneering work in synthetic gene circuits, which launched the field of syn-bio. Each year since 2002, the Citation Laureates program from Clarivate recognizes a small group of highly cited scientists and economists whose influence is comparable to that of past and future Nobel Prize winners.

In the session, Carter will explore what it takes to overcome wine media controversy, tell a good wine story about wine, and champion the underdogs until the wine world sits up and takes notice. South of the border, an entire region is rising, electing radical governments and moving towards integration and genuine independence.Today, “MintPress News” speaks to Ollie Vargas about Latin America and just what is going on in the region President Joe Biden called the U.S.' “front yard.” Ollie Vargas is an award-winning journalist based in Bolivia. He is the co-founder of “Kawsachun News,” an outlet reporting in the English language on Bolivia and Latin America. He has also contributed to “MintPress.”Key to the latest drive towards Latin America has been the role of Brazil and, in particular, President Lula da Silva, who has taken it upon himself to lead the Global South to take a more active role in world politics.Brazil is currently the only Latin American member of the BRICS economic bloc. However, Mexico, Venezuela, Argentina, Cuba, Nicaragua and a host of other countries in the region have expressed interest in joining, which could turn the tables and provide balance to the U.S. “rules-based international order.”Another key figure providing pushback to American dominance of Latin America is Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador. AMLO, as he is known, has refused to kowtow to Washington. Indeed, at President Biden's Summit for Democracy in March, he described the U.S. as nothing more than an “oligarch with a façade of democracy.”AMLO has proven very popular in Mexico, thanks to his pro-people policies. These include massively raising the minimum wage and state pensions, allowing tens of millions to live in dignity. All the while, he has kept inflation low. He holds a televised press conference every morning, in which he talks directly with the people. As Vargas put it, “While previous leaders stood above the population, AMLO stands with the people.”AMLO stands, in Vargas' opinion, in contrast to Chilean President Gabriel Boric. Heralded as a new kind of progressive at the time of his election, Boric has failed to maintain his popularity. Vargas explained that, while Boric has some superficially radical positions, he has changed little about the day-to-day existence of the ordinary people.Vargas also talks about the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war on Latin America, about the upcoming elections in Ecuador, and what it was like reporting under the dictatorshSupport the showMintPress News is a fiercely independent. In this episode, Jason and Patrick Heizer speak to Kristina Bostick about the Montgomery County Agricultural Reserve. Directly northwest of Washington DC, Montgomery County is Maryland's most populated county, with well over one million residents. In 1980, the Montgomery County Council made one of the most significant land-use decisions in US history by creating the Agricultural Reserve. Heralded as one of the best examples of land conservation policies in the country, the Agricultural Reserve encompasses 93,000 contiguous acres – almost a third of the country's land. Today, the Reserve comprises hundreds of working farms that produce a variety of products plus trails and parks for public use. Moreover, it provides habitat for wildlife, helps the region meet its clean water commitments to the Chesapeake Bay, hosts educational field trips for schools and is a hub of agritourism, and much more, all within 30 minutes of Washington, DC. Kristina Bostick is Senior Conservation Associate at the Montgomery Countryside Alliance (https://www.mocoalliance.org/). She grew up in Montgomery County (hiking Sugarloaf every year on her birthday) and has returned after a number of years in North Carolina where she earned her Masters in Public Administration and worked on numerous environmental issues, including stormwater mitigation and greening local governments. Kristina values all the ways the Ag Reserve benefits the Chesapeake Bay region but nothing beats the excitement of a weekly CSA box or the first peaches of summer, all grown right here! Patrick Heizer is a simple guy. He is a husband and a father who is a research & development biomedical engineer at AstraZeneca and a permaculture farmer in Frederick County, Maryland. He writes The Counterpoint substack and can be found on Twitter @PatrickHeizer (https://twitter.com/PatrickHeizer). Montgomery Countryside Alliance is a small (but mighty!) nonprofit organization dedicated to the protection of Montgomery County's 40-year commitment to thriving farms - the Agricultural Reserve. Mea Culpa welcomes back Joe Trippi. Heralded on the cover of The New Republic as the man who “reinvented campaigning,” Trippi pioneered bringing politics into the digital age. Most recently, he's brought his campaign savvy to the Lincoln Project where he serves as a senior advisor. With Trump a target of Federal Prosecutors and State DA's, Trippi is targeting the MAGA machine that continues to prop up divisive politics. Lately, his scorn is being directed at Ron DeSantis, who the GOP hoped to dress up as a more palatable Donald Trump but instead got a zombie hall monitor with a mean streak. You can listen to Joe's podcast, “That Trippi Show,” everywhere podcasts are found or see him on MSNBC, CNN and NBC. Today we're going to talk to him about Ron DeSantis, fake campaign ads and of course the 2024 election. Listen closely, this man is the maestro of campaign politics.

Researchers are heralding a breakthrough in the treatment of Alzheimer's: a drug that is the first to slow the destruction of the brain. But it only works in the early stages of Alzheimer's and many people aren't diagnosed until the disease has already advanced. And, one of the more successful mystics in Japan says he's a reincarnated alien from the planet Venus. He's now intent on recruiting more believers in the US.
