Think: Goosebumps if it was rated R and had a fog machine on overtime. We talk monsters, mullets, and why you should never sketch by candlelight in a horror movie.

The discussion examines why having "a million monsters" often creates noise rather than signal, and explores how constraint and focus can lead to more impactful creative projects. The episode draws from the tension between Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in Marvel Comics history to illustrate the difference between creative execution and editorial vision. It explores how the elevator pitch mentality from Hollywood applies to personal artistic projects, using Star Wars as an example of how one clear core idea can anchor an entire universe. The argument centers on the principle that artistic projects need a single, easily communicable hook that people can understand and share, rather than an overwhelming collection of interesting elements.—Chapters00:00 Intro01:06 Welcome02:23 The Million Monster Problem06:11 Why Clear Signal Beats Creative Chaos16:29 The Stan Lee vs Jack Kirby Lesson28:52 Pick One Idea and Go Deeper35:40 The Analytical Takeaway37:41 The Simple Takeaway37:48 The Practical Takeaway40:39 The Philosophical Takeaway44:11 Outro—The Visual Scholar Podcast is designed to help you demystify the world of Art, Productivity, and Creativity. What does it take to stick with one creative project for more than a decade—and still feel inspired by it? Michelle Fung has been immersed in The World of 2084 since 2015. What began as a vivid dream in a coffee shop became a sprawling, interdisciplinary art project imagining five futuristic nations and their cultural, ecological, and political identities. In this conversation with host Alyson Stanfield, Michelle shares how she builds these imagined worlds through woodcut painting, animation, books, and research—and how her commitment hasn't wavered in 10 years. She talks openly about the tension between conceptual satisfaction and selling work, and how she uses long-term planning to stay focused. You'll also hear how she transitioned from printmaking to a unique “woodcut painting” process that honors her love of carving and visual storytelling—and how she separates money-making projects from money-burning ones without losing joy.

This is The Thirty Ninth Episode of the Visual Scholar Podcast - With Tim Mcburnie. Let's talk about how creative restraint can actually help your art project! Below is in Automagically generated summary so you can check out the content and also to help with search functionality! --- Often, we think unlimited options and total creative freedom are what we need, but in reality, constraints and creative restrictions are essential. Without them, projects can lose focus and fail to materialize into something great. By imposing limitations on ourselves—like deadlines, budgets, or specific genres—we can spark our creativity and produce more interesting work. I discuss how starting with simple, even generic ideas can lead to unique and innovative outcomes. Working with others and adhering to briefs has often pushed me to develop better solutions than when I had complete freedom. Adding constraints helps define our projects and challenges us to think more deeply, turning vague concepts into tangible creations. I encourage you to consider how constraints have affected your own creative process. Reflect on times when you've felt inspired versus when you've faced a blank page with infinite possibilities. By embracing limitations, we can unlock our full creative potential and bring our ideas to life. --- 00:00 Intro02:31 Welcome04:55 The Problem With an Infinity of ideas12:00 The Utility of Simple Ideas18:54 How To Apply Constraints24:56 The Analytical Takeaway26:40 The Simple Takeaway26:57 The Practical Takeaway29:58 The Philosophical Takeaway33:26 Out! From MPR News, Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art. Their recommendations are lightly edited from the audio heard in the player above. Want to be an Art Hound? Submit here. Rustic gallery glamFood writer Amy Thielen of Park Rapids recommends a gallery space in Detroit Lakes with a show that opens Thursday for the peak summer season. The gallery, run by ceramicist Ellen Moses, is called Art Project 605. Visitors can see the abstract landscape paintings and drawings of Jennie Ward of Lake Park. Entitled “Love Song in the Chaos,” the show will be up through Aug. 2. Thielen offers this background: Ellen moved back from New York City during the COVID time. I feel like we gained in the North Country — we gained a lot of very cool people who moved back up north, where they are now working remotely. She and her wife Lori O'Dea bought a storefront. In the back, it's Ellen's studio: She makes plates, cups and 3D sculptures. In the front space of the storefront there's a gallery, and [Thursday night] a show opens by Jennie Ward, an artist who lives a little bit further west in Lake Park.Jennie's paintings are really interesting. They're very beautiful. They're abstract expressionist landscapes. The colors are big, swaths of thick paint; she's a great colorist. I'm very excited for this work. I think everybody in town will love it. It's a beautifully renovated storefront: a beautiful, clean, minimalist working space. It reminds me of a corner in a bigger city, like New York or Chicago.— Amy ThielenGlobal grooves galaPadma Wudali is an amateur musician who plays the veena, a South Indian classical carnatic instrument. The concert is a fundraiser for a new Cultural, Arts and Heritage Center.Padma says: Maithree is a band of Minnesotans who collaborate with classical music, both Western and Indian. So it to me it's not about them diluting any of their art forms, but rather stepping into each other spaces to create amazing music. The music that we will get to hear is Indian, classical Irish, Turkish melodies all seamlessly blended together and various compositions.Shruthi Rajesekar is the youngest member, and I'm super excited to see her work be represented by this group. Amanda describes the events leading up to next weekend: There are workshops and jam sessions. There's also this really awesome event called the 48-Hour Band Challenge. They basically invite musicians who are interested to put their names in a hat. New bands are formed by picking names out of the hat, and then those new bands have 48 hours to write a song together and then perform it. It's a way for musicians to find each other, workshop together, learn, practice, vibe!— Amanda H. Malkin
Michigan State University Professor and Olympian Kelly Salchow MacArthur is once again part of the Olympics, this time leading a community art project. Through the Olympian Artists program, Salchow MacArthur participated in a workshop series creating mixed-media collages with children from two community centers in Paris, France. Her workshop series, from Oct. 23 to 28, 2023, was the first community project in the Olympian Artists program leading up to the Olympic Games Paris 2024. The program, managed through the Olympic Museum in collaboration with the International Olympic Committee, provides artistic explorations into athletics as connected with culture and creativity. Salchow MacArthur was a member of United States National Women's Rowing Team in the 2000 Olympics hosted by Sydney, Australia, and 2004 Olympics hosted by Athens, Greece. From Assata Shakur to Leonard Peltier, social movements have lifted up political prisoners as revolutionary examples and fought protracted, often decades-long campaigns to secure their release. Now, a new collection from AK Press, Rattling the Cages: Oral Histories of North American Political Prisoners, gathers the experience and wisdom of some 30 political prisoners in one place for the first time. Eric King and Josh Davidson, the editors of the project, join Rattling the Bars to discuss their new book and the urgency of the fight to free political prisoners.Josh Davidson is an abolitionist who is involved in numerous projects, including the Certain Days Collective, which publishes the annual Freedom for Political Prisoners calendar, and the Children's Art Project with political prisoner Oso Blanco. Josh also works in communications with the Zinn Education Project.Eric King is a father, poet, author, and activist. He is a political prisoner serving a 10-year federal sentence for an act of protest over the police murder of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, in 2014. He is scheduled to be released in 2024. He has been held in solitary confinement for years on end and has been assaulted by both guards and white supremacists. King has published three zines: Battle Tested, Antifa in Prison, and Pacing in My Cell.Studio / Post-Production: Cameron GranadinoHelp us continue producing Rattling the Bars by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer.Sign up for our newsletterLike us on FacebookFollow us on TwitterDonate to support this podcast

Hear more from Griff Williams on the process of making his documentary "Tell Them We Were Here," what the stories of artists in the Bay Area can tell us about the struggles of artists universally, why artists choose to stay in places like it despite the high cost of living, sustaining Gallery 16 for more than 30 years in San Francisco by prioritizing community over capital, and valuing artists over art. - Find links to resources mentioned throughout the episode here in our show notes: beyondthe.studio - Submit to our Listener Spotlight: Listener Spotlight Follow us on Instagram at: @beyondthestudio @nicolemariemueller @closecallstudio Intro and Ad Music: Suahn Branding: David Colson
In our latest episode, Scott talks with Josh Davidson (@certaindays) co-editor of "Rattling the Cages," about his new oral history of political prisoners in North America. Josh, along with co-editor Eric King, has put together over 35 interviews of political prisoners and former political prisoners. From members of the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Front to whistle-blower Chelsea Manning to members of SHAC and the Earth Liberation Front, the book dives into life on the inside for people with radical politics. We hope to capture a bit of that in the interview. Today we discuss why we feel so comfortable on the air that we forget people are going to actually hear our nonsense. We talk about the serendipity of Susie's birthday and the incredible Arnold cake Adam got her. Sarah explains why people are returning too much stuff, but really they're just buying too much stuff. We theorize about the giraffe with no spots born at a zoo, and Sarah wonders if it's a cry for help. We hear about an organization that finishes the art projects that people leave behind when they die and why stolen memes helped Susie see the good in the world behind the keyboard anonymity. Plus, Sarah reveals what really happened when a man recently told her to smile and we are livid.Join our Candy Club, shop our merch, sign-up for our free newsletter, & more by visiting The Brain Candy Podcast website: https://www.thebraincandypodcast.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/braincandypodSusie's Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/susie_meisterSarah's Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/ImSarahRiceSponsors:Get 20% OFF @honeylove by going to https://www.honeylove.com/braincandy! #honeylovepodHead to head to https://laundrysauce.com/braincandy and use promo code BRAINCANDY at checkout for 15% off!Use our CoPilot link https://go.mycopilot.com/braincandy to get a 14-day FREE trial with your own personal trainer!Get an exclusive 20% off your first order when you visit https://thrivecausemetics.com/braincandyMore podcasts at WAVE: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/artist/wave-podcast-network/1437831426See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
