In this episode, Oisin Fagan tells his very unique boxing story. After having a successful amateur football career in Ireland, he would be offered the opportunity to move to Oklahoma, USA on a soccer scholarship. After getting his degree he would fall on some hard times which included having to sleep in the back of his car. He would then turn to professional boxing at 30 years of age to make some money. He would gradually begin to see success and claim the Oklahoma State title before returning home to capture the Irish Lightweight title at the National Stadium. Oisin would go on to share the ring with 3 world champions, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, Paul Spadadora and Amir Khan. Oisin never lacked heart and achieved a lot in a short space of time. He is now giving back to the youth by coaching boxing in schools with the IABA.

What did I learn that I can use later? What do I want to avoid? What do I need to work on? Who do I need to get close to - or away from? Am I truly passionate enough about this goal to deal with this pain? Is this simply a minor setback or should I focus my energy in a different direction? Step 5. Go and Do Something Risky and Challenging Again Whatever you want in life, if you truly plan on getting it, if you're serious…you're gonna have to pay for it… …but once you've succeeded, once you can ride a bike or fly a plane or make a million dollar business or have sex with a beautiful woman…once you've learned the skill, you can do it again! Jason Quigley is about to begin The Rebuild – and who better than Andy Lee to guide him back towards the top? After all, Lee knows all about The Rocky Road from world title contender to forgotten fighter. He put every drop of blood, sweat and tears into his career to earn himself a crack at the WBC world middleweight title in 2012 but it all went wrong on a sweltering summer night in El Paso against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. He then had to deal with the devastation of losing his beloved trainer and mentor, Emanuel Steward, and look for somewhere to start again from scratch. Lee found a new coach in Adam Booth and, two and a half years later, pulled off an unforgettable victory when he stopped Matt Korobov in Las Vegas to win the WBO world middleweight belt. Luckily for Quigley, he is not starting from scratch. Lee showed it can be done. In his last outing, Quigley was defeated by Demetrius Andrade for the WBO belt Lee previously held but it was another Irish boxing world title night where everything that could go wrong, did go wrong. Lee had visa issues and couldn't attend. And Quigley's game-plan – to feel his way into the fight and figure out his man – went kerplunk when he suffered a broken jaw in the very first round. He's been clipped since – first by an O'Neills Size 5 – and knows he's good to go. The comeback date has been secured – April 1 at the National Stadium – and the opponent will be Kim Poulsen of Denmark. The Rebuild has begun, as both Quigley and Lee tell Kevin Byrne following a lively press conference at the National Stadium. Kev also catches up with Limerick boxing brothers Paddy and Edward Donovan, who fill him in on their sparring sessions at home and abroad, and Lanzarote-based former Irish pro Jonathan O'Brien, who's now coaching fighters over there. He bemoans the recent state of Dublin boxing but, with a new partnership in Elite Sheer on the scene for the Quigley comeback (and pro debut in Ireland), as well as a Waterford card and a Katie Taylor homecoming on the horizon, there's reason to be cheerful for fight fans in the starved south. For the first time since the COVID-19-induced hiatus, professional boxing returns to the Minneapolis Armory on Sunday, June 27. Headlining the nationally televised card is today's guest on the podcast, David Morrell Jr. A native of Cuba now fighting out of the Circle of Discipline gym in Minneapolis, Morrell turned pro in 2019 after a stellar amateur career. Fighting on the iconic Cuban national team, Morrell won multiple world amateur championships while compiling an eye-popping record of 130 wins and just two losses. Without missing a beat, Morrell won a WBA world title in just his third professional fight, a one-sided decision win over previously unbeaten Lennox Allen. He followed that up with a dominant KO victory over veteran Mike Gavronski of Lockport, Illinois. On June 27, he faces another tough test in the form of Mario Cazares, who is unbeaten in 12 pro fights, including an upset win over former world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. In the following interview, Morrell discusses his upcoming fight at the Armory, his preparation for the fight, and how he ended up in Minnesota after defecting from Cuba, among other topics.
