Can you define and defend the doctrine of the Trinity without slipping into heresy? Pastor Jim Osman puts that challenge to the congregation in this exposition of John 1:1 and selected Scriptures.Osman lays out a working definition of the Trinity, that within the one being of God there exist eternally three co-equal and co-eternal persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, then breaks that definition into three pillars. There is only one God. There are three divine persons. Those persons are co-equal and co-eternal. Deny any one of the three, Osman shows, and you land in a specific heresy, polytheism, modalism, or subordinationism.Working carefully through John 1:1 and 2, Osman traces the Greek behind John's language to show that the Word both existed eternally with God and was Himself fully God, distinct in person yet one in essence. He warns against every popular analogy for the Trinity, the egg, the water, the three roles of a single man, showing why each one actually illustrates a heresy rather than the truth. This sermon gives listeners the vocabulary and the biblical grounding to speak accurately about who God is, and sets up next week's look at what the Trinity means for worship, prayer, and assurance. ★ Support this podcast ★

Part 4 In attempting to interpret passages in the Bible which clearly point to a distinction in the persons of the Father and the Son, Oneness Pentecostals obfuscate the meaning of these passages by making an artificial distinction between Jesus' human nature and His divine nature.   In responding to this position, one cannot do so without referring to early Church history.  Does Jesus have a dual nature such that His divine self-consciousness can be distinguished from His human self-consciousness?  When Jesus forgave sins, calmed the storm, and cast out devils, did He do so as God but not as man?  When Jesus grew weary, hungered and thirsted, did he do so as man but not as God?  These questions and more shall be discussed in relation to the doctrine of the incarnation in this fourth teaching.    Download teaching notes (pdf) https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/bethesdashalom/4_The_Doctrine_of_the_Trinity_Pt._2.pdf

Part 3 The doctrine of God as it relates to the nature of His being is no small matter.  The first three centuries of Church history were consumed with this central issue.  In the second and third centuries, men like Praxeas and Sabellius argued that God was singular not only in being but also in person.  Sabellius taught that, like an actor wearing different masks on stage, God likewise assumed different modes at different times to manifest Himself to man.  In the Old Testament, God assumed the role of a Father; in the incarnation, the role of a Son, and in regeneration, the role of the Holy Spirit.  Modalistic Monarchianism was soundly defeated in the early centuries of the Church; yet, over the last one hundred years, this ancient heresy has resurfaced amongst those identifying themselves as Oneness Pentecostals.   In this third teaching part, we begin to examine the Biblical evidence for the doctrine of the Trinity while at the same time looking at early Church history and those heresies which confounded the persons of the Godhead. Send us a textToday, June 15, is not only Father's Day.  It is also Trinity Sunday.  To me, the concept of the Trinity is incomprehensible.  Which is why I am the perfect person to explain it to the rest of you.  This podcast started twenty years ago when one of my Muslim students asked me to explain it to her.  She should have asked me to explain E=MC Square. Oh, I can do that:   "Matter exploded equals energy and this led to the atomic bomb.  Is that right?"  Well, Einstein probably had a bit more to say about it than a struggling human being like me.  The same is true with theology.  If God is incomprehensible then all explanations of God are simply human efforts to put into words that which is not subject to words or even understanding.  If that last sentence upset you, then you may not want to listen to this podcast.  If it intrigued you, then you are invited to spend the next half hour walking through a theological mine field with me.  (And to go to my podcast on Feuerbach, who discussed this concept in great depth).  But as I often told my students, you are probably better off not discussing some of these topics at the dinner table.  We are engaging in an intellectual process.  You know you are not being asked to change what you believe.  Just to understand some perspectives that may be new to you.  Not everyone will be where you are.  There is no reason to upset people with difficult ideas. Are you ready?  Seat belt on?  Here we go.

The Nicene Creed, formulated at the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, is a foundational statement of Christian faith, affirming the Trinity and the full divinity of Christ. It was written to refute the Arian heresy, declaring that the Son is "of the same substance" as the Father. For over 1,700 years, it has united believers across traditions, safeguarded orthodox theology, and provided a clear confession of faith. Today, the creed remains essential for defending biblical doctrine, fostering church unity, and grounding Christians in the unchanging truth of the gospel.

Part 3 Jehovah's Witnesses, like all true Christians of every denomination, are monotheistic in their expression of belief. They, like us, believe in one eternal God.  The point of divergence comes however when they maintain that the singular being of God is without a plurality of persons.  The doctrine of the Trinity affirms that there is one God, eternally existent in three persons, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society deny this truth and aggressively attacks this position in its written literature. In this teaching, we take to task the literature of the Watch Tower and counter its heretical claims with Biblical truth.  For Jehovah's Witnesses, the name of God which it maintains is Jehovah is everything.  But is His name Jehovah?  Does history bear this out? How should the divine name of God (Tetragrammaton) be transliterated?  What if, from the Watch Tower's own Bible, one could prove that Jesus is Jehovah?  We endeavour to answer all these questions, proving conclusively that Jesus Christ is God. Muslims deny that God is triunity , yet in the Quran God is referred to with the plural pronoun" we".  In Sura 2:23,106, Sura10: 94, and Sura 66:12 where  it says that God and the Holy Spirt breathed into Mary.  Also in the Quran it says that the Spirit appeared to Mary in the form of a man.  Muslims can not explain the plurality of God and also his oneness. But Christian do throughout the Bible because God revealed himself that way.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

One of the most important doctrines of the Christian faith is that of the Trinity. The subject of the Trinity is holy ground because it pertains to the nature of the one true God. So we approach the subject with all humility and reverence. But, if you feel a little baffled by the Trinity, join the crowd. History's greatest minds have stood in amazement before a God so great that our explanations cannot contain Him. However, God desires for us to know Him and He has chosen to reveal Himself, His nature, to us through the Trinity. * * * LET'S BE FRIENDS!  HOST: Sarah Turner - Facebook GUEST: Michael Smith - Facebook  * * *  Beltway Park Church: Instagram | Facebook | Twitter | YouTube Beltway Park Church * * *  SHOW NOTES: Healing the Orphan Spirit
