In this episode, Cindy Esliger talks about the social window, the fleeting time that occurs during the first few weeks in a new environment, when people are more open to connection and bonding. The social window won't last forever, so it's important to take advantage of it to build relationships, establish influence, and form a supportive network. What is the best way to use the social window to our career advantage, and what should we expect while trying? Cindy explains the process. The social window offers the easiest time for us to engage in networking. There is a fleeting openness in it that creates a low-stakes environment for relationship building. Cindy shares five ways to make the most of the opportunity: 1) Be proactive, not passive, 2) Join group activities, 3) Leverage shared hardships, 4) Focus on quality over quantity, and 5) Follow up. Cindy discusses being intentional about the social window by deciding what we want to accomplish and forming a plan. Having goals will help prioritize our efforts when meeting new people. She suggests reframing our perspective to see introductions as a career investment instead of as a series of awkward moments. If we don't take advantage of this time, real consequences can follow. Cindy identifies three of the most common: 1) Feeling out of place, 2) Missed career opportunities, and 3) Undermined confidence. In this episode, Jaya brings forward a challenge that many of us can relate to - leaving conversations feeling undermined or devalued. She struggles with how to maintain her power and self-worth when people dismiss, invalidate, or fail to recognize her contributions. Her core questions include:How do I keep my power when dealing with people who undermine or devalue me?What language can I use to defend myself? How do I navigate situations where I freeze in response to subtle invalidation? Why do some people always take a contrarian point of view, and how can I respond? How do I handle accusations of being selfish when I set boundaries or withdraw?Key Takeaways for ListenersShift Your Perspective - Stop seeing these moments as something being done to you and instead as data about the other person's patterns and needs.Break the Victim Cycle - Seeing yourself as prey in a predator-prey dynamic keeps you in freeze mode. Recognizing others' behaviors as their habitual strategies helps reclaim your power.Practice Self-Connection - Instead of seeking validation from someone who won't provide it, turn inward and self-attune: What am I feeling? What do I need?Ask for What You Want - If someone is dismissing your feelings, redirect the conversation by explicitly asking them to focus on your experience rather than rationalizing the other person's behavior.Recognize Their Needs - Many people default to giving advice or taking a contrarian stance as a way of meeting their own needs - to feel helpful, competent, or insightful. Seeing this can help depersonalize their behavior.Exit With Grace - If someone is Monopolizing the conversation or invalidating you, set a boundary: "I just realized I need to get going." No justification is needed.Selfishness vs. Self-Connection - True self-care benefits everyone. When you act from self-connection rather than obligation, you model healthy relational dynamics. We Discuss: 1:01 Opening thoughts3:05 I feel undermined and I freeze. How has the prosperity gospel influenced purity culture, and what does that mean for parenting today? The connections might surprise you. Purity Culture, much like the prosperity gospel, promises rewards for adhering to specific behaviors, but it often leads to disappointment and shame. And all too often in the church, parents apply this same type of thinking to their children. Parents assume that they will be rewarded with God-honoring, God-fearing children if they teach their children all the right things and parent the Biblical way. Like with the Prosperity Gospel and Purity Culture, the emphasis is on the outcome, not your child's relationship with God. In this thought-provoking episode of "Christian Parent/Crazy World," Catherine engages Dr. Lina Abujamra in a candid discussion about the harmful effects of Purity Culture in Christian communities. They highlight how Purity Culture parallels the Prosperity Gospel by creating unrealistic expectations and measuring spiritual worth through outcomes rather than genuine faith and grace. Episode Highlights: Purity Culture and Prosperity Gospel: Lina Abujamra draws parallels between purity culture and the prosperity gospel, noting how both promise material or relational rewards for specific behaviors. While purity culture emphasizes sexual abstinence with the promise of perfect marriages and fulfilling sex lives, the prosperity gospel promises material wealth and success for faithful followers. Misplaced Expectations: Both movements often set up unrealistic expectations, leading to disillusionment and shame when life doesn't unfold as promised. This results in individuals feeling unworthy or questioning their faith when they don't receive the anticipated rewards. Misogynistic Undertones: Lina and Catherine criticize the misogynistic tendencies within purity culture, where women often bear a disproportionate burden of maintaining purity. Object lessons like the chewed gum or wilted flower are used to shame women, implying that they lose their worth through sexual activity. Biblical Misinterpretations: Both purity culture and the prosperity gospel teachings divert from Biblical truths, focusing more on human efforts and rewards than on God's grace and the transformative power through a relationship with Christ. Impact on Young Believers: Catherine and Lina discuss the generational fallout from purity culture, noting how younger Christians are increasingly rejecting outdated, shaming shaming messages. This shift highlights the need for a more grace-filled, genuine approach to faith that centers on a deep, personal relationship with God. Key Takeaways: - Parents should teach their children that faith isn't about earning rewards through good behavior, but about nurturing a genuine, loving relationship with Christ. - Rejecting the false promises of purity culture and prosperity gospel can prevent the deep disappointment and shame that arise from unmet expectations. - A grace-filled approach to faith that acknowledges personal struggles and imperfection can lead to more authentic spiritual growth and fulfillment. - Both purity culture and prosperity gospel distort the Gospel's core message by equating spiritual worth with specific outcomes, rather than the inherent value found in a relationship with Jesus. Guest bio: Dr. Lina Abujamra is a distinguished pediatric emergency room doctor, author, speaker, and the founder of Living With Power Ministries. Known for her dynamic and heartfelt approach, she offers practical biblical insights to help people navigate life's challenges with faith and resilience. Her most recent book, Don't Tell Anyone You're Reading This: A Christian Doctor's Thoughts on Sex, Shame, and Other Troublesome Issues, offers a candid look into her sexual struggles and the grace that brought her freedom. In this episode, we explore the inspiring journey of Qoria (formerly Family Zone), a company born from the vision of four dedicated parents determined to make digital spaces safer for children. Facing off against tech giants indifferent to online child protection, Qoria has emerged as a global leader in digital safety. We delve into the industry's complexities, including government funding for technology that doesn't adequately protect families and how Qoria champions interoperable solutions against restrictive practices by companies like Microsoft. From early boundaries to overt parental controls, we discuss why starting protective measures early makes a difference, empowering parents to safeguard their children's digital lives. Tim Levy, Managing Director of Qoria, shares a deeply personal and moving story. The cyberbullying and subsequent suicide of his niece's best friend left an indelible mark on him. He realized that children were navigating a digital world that was perilously unsafe. Motivated by a desire to protect his own kids and others, Tim joined forces with his close friend Crispin Swan, also a telco veteran. They were soon joined by Ben Trigger and Paul Robinson.Together, they asked a fundamental question: Why can't we protect our children in their digital lives as well as we can in their home lives? This question sparked the creation of Qoria. Their vision was to develop a suite of technology solutions that would empower parents, schools, and children to collaborate in ensuring digital safety. They sought to bridge the gaps left by siloed approaches, where schools, parents, and social and gaming platforms operated independently. They believed our children deserved better. The Birth and Growth of Qoria:In 2015, Family Zone was born. With a big vision, a recently launched consumer offering, and no money, they took a bold step by going public. Family Zone was listed on the Australian Stock Exchange the following year.Tim reflects on their journey: "Since then, we have been incredibly lucky to be joined by some amazing businesses, trusted advisors, and loyal investors, all of whom share our passion and commitment for tackling what is clearly one of the most pressing problems of the modern world."All tech is not safe for children in 2024 Telegram, Reddit, Google, Apple, Microsoft, Snapchat, Facebook, Whatsapp, Google Docs, Facebook, Instagram, Tor, Google Drive, Google Mapshttps://qoria.com/our-storySupport the showSubscribe and support the podcast at https://www.buzzsprout.com/367319/supporters/newLearn more at www.profselenabartlett.com

LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 30, 2024) – After finding great satisfaction in writing his first popular press book, “Vote for US: How to Take Back Our Elections and Change the Future of Voting,” Joshua Douglas was motivated to pursue a similar endeavor for his second book. Douglas, a professor at the UK J. David Rosenberg College of Law, sought advice from a trusted advisor about his new idea, which focused on using bipartisan solutions to improve our elections and potentially circumventing the need for Supreme Court involvement. His advisor suggested that this concept should be the conclusion of his book, proposing instead that Douglas explore why he views the Supreme Court as problematic and why a comprehensive election reform is necessary. The outcome is Douglas' second book, released on May 14th, titled "The Supreme Court v. The Voters: The Troubling Story of How the Supreme Court Has Undermined Voting Rights." In this book, Douglas delves into significant voting rights cases—some lesser-known and others more familiar—to examine the pivotal moments that have profoundly affected our elections and the nation. Through clear and approachable writing, Douglas recounts each case, sheds light on the enduring electoral challenges we face, and underscores the significant influence the Supreme Court has had in creating a compromised electoral system. On this episode of Behind the Blue, Douglas shares what attracted him to the cases discussed in his book, highlights unexpected details readers may learn about the Constitution's treatment of voting rights, and offers ideas for reforms that could lead to meaningful improvements. The National Party insists there has been no conflict of interest in David Macleod formerly chairing the committee considering the contentious fast-track bill. The New Plymouth MP received $10,000 from a donor with shares in a company hoping to benefit from the legislation. Macleod was yesterday stood down from his role as chair of Parliament's Environment Select Committee for failing to properly declare donations to his election campaign. Political reporter Katie Scotcher reports.

But despite being so ubiquitous in American culture today, the meteoric rise of bottled water isn't by coincidence -- and your average bottle and average tap have more in common than you might think.

Gaslighting is a term that's used a lot because it is a prevalent form of undermining and manipulation that often exists in professional environments. Why do people employ the use of gaslighting? How can we recognize it? And what long-term impact does it have on us? Cindy dives into the explanations and advice surrounding gaslighting. Gaslighting can take various forms, from dismissing or trivializing our concerns to denying facts or events that have happened. People use gaslighting to maintain or advance their own position in the workplace and it's effective because it sows doubt in the target and disempowers them. Cindy explains how gaslighting works to erode confidence and details the ways it can cause cumulative stress and an emotional toll that can contribute to mental health issues. Cindy's advice for counteracting gaslighting partially involves conducting a self-assessment that builds belief in ourselves that is independent of the opinions of others. Relying on external validation can open the door for gaslighting to be effective. Cindy's five tips and strategies for building that belief are, 1. Self-reflection, 2. Constructive feedback, 3. Setting personal goals, 4. Self-compassion, and 5. Developing our skills. She shares warning signs, advice for empowerment, and ways to restore lost self-confidence in this necessary and important episode. In a high-stakes presidential election year, in partnership with the Newt and Jo Minow Debate Series at the Northwestern Pritzker School of Law, Open to Debate is taking a look at more than a decade of the Citizens United Supreme Court case. The 2010 landmark decision that ruled the free speech clause of the First Amendment prohibits the government from restricting independent expenditures for political communications by corporations, including nonprofits, labor unions, and other associations, changed the landscape of political spending in the U.S. This gave rise to Super PACS and an increase in election campaign spending. Since then, there have been questions about whether the decision has harmed our democratic process. Those who support the decision argue it upholds free speech, allowing diverse voices in the political arena, and broadens the range of discourse by enabling groups to freely express their views and support candidates or policies. Those against it argue that it allows a disproportionate influence from corporations and special interest groups, and leaves the voices of ordinary citizens overshadowed by the financial resources of a few, eroding the principles of equality and fair representation. With this context, we debate the question: Has Citizens United Undermined Democracy? This debate is presented in partnership with the Northwestern Pritzker School of Law as part of the Newt and Jo Minow Debate Series. It will be recorded live in person on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, at the Thorne Auditorium at Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law in Chicago, Illinois. Arguing Yes: Francesca Procaccini, Assistant Professor of Law at Vanderbilt University Law School; Ciara Torres-Spelliscy, Professor of Law at Stetson University Arguing No: Floyd Abrams, Senior Counsel at Cahill Gordon & Reindel; Eric Wang, Partner at The Gober Group, pro bono Senior Fellow at the Institute for Free Speech Learn more about your ad choices. You've heard of the glass ceiling, of course. You may have bumped your head on it - or even smashed through it. But have you heard of the glass cliff? This is the phenomenon where female leaders are much more likely to be given the opportunity to step into leadership roles within businesses that are already in a prolonged period of poor performance. And therefore, set up for organisational failure. Well, the wondrous Sophie Williams (author of Anti-Racist Ally and Millennial Black) is the global expert on this phenomenon and it's what her latest book - The Glass Cliff: Why Women in Power are Undermined and How To Fight Back - is all about. She's on the podcast this week being magnificent; making us a little angry and lot more informed. Brace yourselves and have a listen... For today's discussion we were delighted to welcome back our good friend Robert Bryce. Robert is the author of six books (his most recent being "A Question of Power: Electricity and the Wealth of Nations"), host of the Power Hungry podcast, and a former journalist with more than 30 years of experience reporting on the energy sector. He is a frequent contributor to the energy discussion and his Substack is linked here. Robert has just released his latest docuseries focused on power titled "Juice: Power, Politics, and the Grid" (available to watch here). The series officially debuts today, January 31st, and we were thrilled to visit with Robert to discuss the vitally important examination this docuseries brings to light around the state of power grids both domestically and internationally. "Juice: Power, Politics, and the Grid" is a five-part docuseries with 20-minute episodes titled "Texas Blackout," "Undermined by Enron," "Green Dreams," "Nuclear Renaissance," and "Industrial Cathedrals." In our conversation with Robert, we touch on Canada's recent nuclear power developments, the challenges and legacy of Enron and Enron-type thinking in today's electricity market, the importance of government involvement in supporting nuclear energy, the consequence of electricity being treated as a commodity rather than a service, and the crucial role of reliability in the grid. Robert shares his perspective on the impact of permitting delays, regulatory issues and land use conflicts, the difficulties of building infrastructure, including high voltage transmission lines, the need for long-term bipartisan support for nuclear energy, and how the "anti-industry industry" affects energy policy. We also discuss policy as a reliability risk, industrial consumers (i.e. Dow, Microsoft) becoming more interested in nuclear (see recent Microsoft news here), NGO influence, the need for balanced priorities among decarbonization, affordability and reliability, and more. We want to congratulate Robert for the launch of "Juice: Power, Politics, and the Grid" and for his contributions to help change the conversation. It was a fantastic discussion! To kick us off, Mike Bradley highlighted the upcoming FOMC meeting, continued bullish equity market sentiment, rebound in crude oil prices, and broadening out of Q4 energy subsector reporting in the coming weeks. Wednesday's FOMC Rate Decision meeting looms large, with most expecting the FED will continue to pause interest rates. Equity volatility is still very low and equity market sentiment remains very bullish. On the commodity front, global crude oil prices continue to rise and the biggest surprise for crude oil markets this week was Saudi Aramco's decision not to proceed with plans to increase their maximum sustainable capacity up to 13mmbpd, which weighed heavily on the consensus positive sentiment towards internationally levered oil service equities. Brett Rampal flagged Canada's recent announcement to refurbish the Pickering nuclear plant, extending its operational life by several decades, and showcasing the ability of groups, advocates and the nuclear industry to execute large-scale refurbishment projects efficiently. As mentioned, Robert previously joined COBT on Jan. 5, 2021 (episode linked here) and first on Aug. 11, 2020 (episode linked here). Our COBT episode with Meredith Angwin, author of "Shorting the Grid," is linked here from June 8, 2022. As is almost always the case, this past week was a busy one with many things happening i

Earlier this month police in Delhi raided the homes of several prominent journalists in connection with an investigation into the funding of news website NewsClick. Officials are reportedly investigating allegations that NewsClick got illegal funds from China - a charge it denies, the case is currently in the Indian supreme court. Are the raids an attempt by the government to "muzzle" free speech, as some activists say - or simply a straightforward police investigation into the funding of news website Newsclick? Critics say the harassment of journalists, nongovernmental organisations, and other government critics has increased significantly under the current administration. In addition to this, Prime Minister Modi's premiership has been dogged by persistent allegations over his political party's anti-Muslim stance. Has Modi's re-definition of India as a Hindu nation intensified discrimination against minorities? India is known as the world's largest democracy - over one billion people are eligible to vote in its general election in 2024. But is democracy now under threat in India?
