Prost
In today's episode of the Atheist Experience, JMike and Secular Rarity tackle fallacies, logic, and questions of ontology!Sura in India believes that because religion exists with stories, there must be supernatural things such as beings. Would these supernatural beings exist without religions? Once you wiggle the terms of supernatural beings with wiggle room, the more meaningless these wiggly terms become.Arec in Norway is questioning if it is fair to criticize people who use faith rather than reason when there is no other answer. Why do you think it is important that people play by the same rules when having these conversations? We like to have reliable ways to get to conclusions, and that does not include the use of faith. Keep investigating this and call us back with what you find. Rajin in NY wants some science based reasoning for the lack of god's existence. Logic and science are terms that should be used separately. Why is it that in all possible worlds, god has to exist? If god has to exist from all points of view, what is the point of talking about it? What does “something from nothing” even mean? The Motte-and-bailey fallacy describes the method many theists use when trying to prove god. Why should we accept “nothing” as a possibility?Rostaman in Mexico describes how none of us have access to ontology because it belongs with metaphysics. Categorizing beliefs can make us feel like there is substance, but why use labels and terms if the meaning can be explained?JMike has to bail so Scott Dickie takes over for him to talk with Dave in India who believes that science has not been fully discovered and therefore we don't know what that means for our soul and body. How does the lack of our understanding or ability to prove things through science prove that magic happens? Is god causing the things we don't understand or are these things themselves god?Tom in MS has some thoughts about the Catholic Church and how things have historically not changed when having different popes. If god can do everything, wouldn't he be able to choose the next pope? The actions over the millenia are a good indication of what will change with each pope. Dee in IA has some questions about a logic problem that is apparently not solvable. Some of these logic problems are weird and reading up on them by diving head first can be super cool. Unfortunately, we don't have access to the physical foundations of the universe. Sometimes we need to look in the direction Occam's Razor points to. Thank you for joining us this week! We will see you next time!Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-atheist-experience--3254896/support.

Avsnitt 276.

Dr Jay and Al Fadi continue with three more historical problems with the Quran: 1. The Al Aqsa mosque( Sura 17: 1), which Muslims believe that Mohammad ascended into heaven from, was built in 710 AD, and Mohammad died in 632 AD. 2. The chain mail that is mentioned in Sura 24: 10-11 that King David wore around 1000BC ,was not invented until 200 BC. 3. The reference to the crucifixion in Sura 7: 121-124 during the time of Moses and Pharaoh in 1400 BC and Joseph 1800BC (Sura 12 :41). The crucifixion was invented 1300 years later. Yet the Quran denies the crucifixion of Jesus in Sura 4 : 157 ; this is a theological and a historical problem.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Dr Jay and Al Fadi discuss the refutations to Dan Brubaker book: Corrections in Early Quranic Manuscripts. one of the refutations is by Hythem Sidky who writes a book responding to Dan's book. Dr Jay and Al Fadi also talk about the historical problems of the Quran, they give an example from Sura 20 : 85-87,95-97, where it talks about a Samaritan who lived in the time of Moses and helped the Israelites build the golden calf. The problem with that story is the time period ; Moses lived in 1400 BC and the Samaritan did not exist until 722BC. In conclusion; having even one mistake in the Quran proves that is not divinely preserved. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Noor Meditation: Anxiety and Sura Duha by Bilal Elsakka
Continuing last week's discussion, Al Fadi and Dr Jay Smith say that Ibn Mujaahed chose the seven Kira'at in the tenth century. The criteria for choosing them was popularity. Hafs differ from the other Kira'at by 93 thousand dots and vowels. Therefore the preservation claim does not stand the test. They give several examples between the Hafs and Warsh: 1. Sura 2:184 ; Al miskeen and Al masaakeen; the first is singular noun and the second is the plural form of the noun. 2. Sura 3:146; the words kaatala (fought) and kutila (killed). These differences have huge theological and practice implications. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Dear listeners What a journey this podcast is!It started as a reading of the Quran to be recorded for life sadakah jareeyah. Then it turned into coaching life lessons /reflections on everyday living and now it's a companion a soul mate
Se formó un escándalo en el edificio por tirar los arbolitos de Navidad.
Dr Jay and Al Fadi continue the comparison between the upper and the lower layers of the Sana manuscripts of the Quran with the 1924 Hafs edition of the Quran. They point out differences that changes the meaning of the text; for example Sura 9: 9 in the lower layer of the manuscripts states" the way of Allah while the Hafs Quran of 1924 says 'His way". Another difference in the upper layer as an example is Sura 7: 76 "you directed vs he directed" They point out that most of the differences have to do with the diacritical marking which did not exist until the 8th century. Even with the upper layer of the manuscripts there was no standardized Quran yet. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Dr Jay Smith discusses the book that Dr Asma Hilali wrote on the Sana Palimpsest manuscripts. He talks about the conclusions that she came up with by comparing it to todays Hafs Quran; she says that there are seventy variants in sixty three verses. She also believes that it is a student text. Jay says that that shuts down the idea of the preservation of the Quran which both Muslim and the Quran claim ( ie Sura 85: 21,22). Then Jay and Al discuss some of the differences as examples. Then they ask the question : Is the Quran perfectly preserved? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Al Fadi and Dr David continue to disprove the myth of the perfect preservation of the Quran. In this episode they go to a book called Fadaelle Al Quran; in Sura 33 there is only 73 verses left of 200 original verses; the reason is that a sheep ate it according to Ayesha who had the only copy of the sura. According to Muslims the Quran was preserved by memory. in Sura 87: 6,7 Allah allows Mohammad to forget some suras that He wills. In Hadith Al Bukhari 50:38,39 Mohammad claims that Allah caused him to forget some verses.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Mohammad married Ayesha at age 6 and consummated the marriage at age 9. The Quran allows marriage of prepubescent child (Sura 65:4). And since Muslims believe that Muhammad was an example for mankind; therefore Islam allows child marriage. In order to justify that; the Muslim Da'wa team lie about girls being married as a child in the Bible; Mary is one example. They find unreliable Catholic apocryphal sources. Al and David discuss this matter in more details.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week we'll meet Pastor Luis Sura. This Franklin, Tennessee pastor says that he has been volunteering since before he knew what the word meant, and now he does so in an official capacity. While he holds a part-time job as an assistant pastor, he also runs the nonprofit Better Options TN, which was founded in 2016. Better Options TN has several initiatives, including mentoring and ESL classes, but its main focus is helping people find housing, filling a big need in the community. Pastor Sura explains that there are many places to get help with clothes or food, but this is one of the few organizations that offers assistance with rent and finding housing. Although it is a huge time commitment, Pastor Sura loves his volunteer work. He says that it is essential for people to volunteer with something they love doing.“When you love what you do,” he says, “even when they don't pay you, you enjoy it.”This podcast is brought to you by Doing Good, a 501c3 nonprofit. www.doingggood.tv. Navarātri is never quite complete until we all get together and chant the Mahiṣāsura-Mardinī Stotram! This hymn is sometimes attributed to Adi Shankarācharya (as many, many hymns in the Sanskrit tradition tend to be) but it is also sometimes attributed to Rāvana, the antagonist of the Ramāyana! I like the second account much better for reasons I get into in the beginning of this discussion! After discussing the "bhāva" of this song (and making a case for "rajas in the service of sattva" while we're at it), we discuss Rāga Bhairava and some music theory before taking a stab and singing the hymn together. I made many, many mistakes and my rendition: I hope you can forgive me! Also, I made a mistake in saying Raga Bhairavi is a "night time rāga". Actually it's considered the "queen of the morning rāgas" but since I worship Mā usually at night and since I hear it most around then and also since it is sometimes used to close out a musical performance (which for me usually ends at night), I somehow made the association between this Rāga and the nighttime. Whoops, pardon the misinformation! All my mistakes are entirely mine and everything that I have said that is helpful is by the Grace of Guru! Whenever we think of the Goddess Durgā, the image that almost invariable comes to mind is of Her standing on her lion of Dharma with Her right foot, stepping on a buffalo with Her left foot and, spear in hand, stabbing the mustachioed villain-turned-devotee through the heart, an otherworldly smile on Her beautiful face. This image of Mā is called Mahiṣāsura-mardinī (The Slayer of the Buffalo Demon) and it is the central story of the Devī Māhātmyam in the sense that it is (a) literally, in the middle of the text, the "Madhya carita" and (b) most commonly referenced in Śākta literature and iconography. There is just something so very compelling and so very ancient about this image! We see parallels in the image of Archangel Michael stepping on the head of the serpent with sword or spear in hand. What exactly is being depicted here?In this video, we chant Chapters 2-4 of the Devī Māhātmyam to enter into the gory and lurid story in which this scene appears. As we chant and read out the translations from Swami Jagadishwaranandaji, we also offer some commentary and explanation exploring the deeper, subtler meanings of the narrative. This was arguably the "main event" in our celebration together online! In the coming Monday evening satsangh, we will chant the Mahiṣāsura-mardinī Stotram together, Mā willing!Jaya Jaya He Mahiṣāsura Mardini Ramya Kapārdini Śaila Sute! Today you will have a total Atheist Experience as the one and only Shelley Segal treats us to the best start to the show ever! Jim Barrows and JMike walk us through what does and does not matter when providing evidence just before learning there are holograms in our brains! Shelley provides a beautiful concert to conclude our show. Nick in WI believes that he has found god in the same way he would find a specific car in a car lot. If you were to search for god, what reason would you have to think god exists before you start searching? Why would we care about the characteristics if this god has not been demonstrated to exist? How do you explain a Christian foundation's findings that say prayer has no more effects than a placebo? What does “spiritually alive” mean? Considering the history of the Cananites, how did they get from polytheism to theism? Why blame god for something that is part of you and wanting to know as many true things as possible?Mac in CA has the argument from perennialism to prove god and is described as god has been contacting humans through history. The sound trailed off into underwater territory. Sura in India says there is a strong force that is driving all religions. All religions attempt to explain things we have no control over is a more reasonable explanation than adding a supernatural god to the equation. Why postulate a god for natural phenomena? How do the percentages of people that believe something have any bearing on the truth?Oliver in FL wants to know what science or LGBTQ has to do with atheism and atheists use faith for not having evidence for god. By your definition of faith, what am I believing in as an atheist that I can't substantiate or confirm? What is the entailment for when we continue to ask for evidence? Why would Einstein saying anything get us to believe in this useless god of Spinoza?Angus in NE, Jesus Mythicist asks what the hosts think of Yahwey or Yesua never saying anything. The same thing can be said of The Hobbit or other stories. What does what someone says prove anything about their existence? Dave in India asks the hosts if they would consent to the point that there is a hologram in their brains. How would that point to god? Personal experience does nothing to move the needle here. How does your brain making you see stuff get us to god? Under what circumstances should we assume the supernatural is real? Why would you believe our lives as atheists are meaningless? That was awesome wasn't it? Thank you for hanging out with us this week! Question of the week is: Why did god really go no contact with people?Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-atheist-experience--3254896/support.
