Außerdem rufen ständig Gratulanten an.

Randall shows Chris some of Hitler's favorite artists, and some of Hitler's own paintings.  *** Download slides here: https://mega.nz/file/VpllnD4D#hy3_24eqWYTHTM3SR3x2XNOACkZ57XmwC5_8kBd1a0I *** Hitler's favorite fine artists according to Albert Speer: 1) Eduard von Grützner 2) Wilhelm Leibl 3) Hans Thoma 4) Hans Makart 5) Carl Spitzweg 6) Arno Breker 7) Paris Bordone 8) Titian 9) Anselm Feuerbach (Nana) 10) Giovanni Paolo Panini 11) Eduard von Steinle *** In the book, The Mind of Adolf Hitler, Hanisch reports: "He (Hitler) was never an ardent worker, was unable to get up in the morning, had difficulty in getting started, and seemed to be suffering from a paralysis of the will."[6]  *** This episode based on Inside the Third Reich, 1970 edition, first US printing You may read a different edition online here: https://archive.org/details/Inside_the_Third_Reich_Albert_Speer ... p43 One of Hitler's as well as Hoffman's favorite painters was Eduard Grützner... ... For all departments of art Hitler regarded the late nineteenth century as one of the greatest cultural epochs in human history. That is was not yet recognized as such, he said, was only because we were too close to it in time. But his appreciation stopped at Impressionism, whereas the naturalism of a Leibl or a Thoma suited his activistic approach to art. Makart ranked highest; he also thought highly of Spitzweg. In this case I could understand his feeling, although what he admired was not so much the bold and often impressionistic brushwork as the staunch middle-class genre quality, the affable humor with which Spitzweg gently mocked the small-town Munich of his period. ... p90 Along the opposite wall stood a massive chest containing built-in speakers, and adorned by a large bronze bust of Richard Wagner by Arno Breker. Above this hung another tapestry which concealed the movie screen. Large oil paintings covered the walls: a lady with exposed bosom ascribed to Bordone, a pupil of Titian; a picturesque reclining nude said to be by Titian himself; Feuerbach's Nana in a very handsome frame; an early landscape by Spitzweg; a landscape of Roman ruins by Pannini; and surprisingly, a kind of altar painting by Eduard von Steinle, one of the Nazarene group, representing King Henry, founder of cities. But there was no Grützner. Hitler occasionally let if be known that he had paid for these paintings out of his own income. ... Occasionally the movies were discussed, Hitler commenting mainly on the female actors and Eva Braun on the males. No one took the trouble to raise the conversation above the level of trivialities by, for example, remarking on any of the new trends in directing. Of course the choice of films scarcely allowed for any other approach, for they were all standard products of the entertainment industry. Such experiments of the period as Curt Ortel's Michelangelo film were never shown, at least not when I was there.  ... Later, during the war, Hitler gave up the evening showings, saying that he wanted to renounce his favorite entertainment "out of sympathy for the privations of the soldiers." Instead records were played. But although the record collection was excellent, Hitler always preferred the same music. Neither baroque nor classical music, neither chamber music nor symphonies, interested him. Before long the order of the records became virtually fixed. First he wanted a few bravura selections from Wagnerian operas, to be followed promptly with operettas. That remained the pattern. Hitler made a point of trying to guess the names of the sopranos and was pleased when he guessed right, as he frequently did.  ... p27 To decorate the Goebbels house I borrowed a few watercolors by Nolde from Eberhard Hanfstaengl, the director of the Berlin National Gallery. Goebbels and his wife were delighted with the paintings—until Hitler cane to inspect and expressed his severe disapproval. Then the minister summoned me immediately: "The pictures have to go at once; they're simply impossible!" ... p42 Thus, in the realm of architecture, as in painting and sculpture, Hitler really remained arrested in the world of his youth: the world of 1880 to 1910, which stamped its imprint on his artistic taste as on his political and ideological conceptions.  *** Topics discussed include:  Rudolf von Alt birth of the modern world Reich Culture Chamber Abstract art Emil Nolde Eduard von Grützner Wilhelm Leibl Hans Thoma Hans Makart Carl Spitzweg Arno Breker Richard Wagner Paris Bordone Titian Anselm Feuerbach (Nana) Reich Culture Chamber The Degenerate Art Exhibition Jazz Swing Kids (1993) Fraktur https://chrisandrandall.com/ep32-does-art-influence-the-public-mind-part-3-of-3-authoritarians-and-the-cias-art-war *** Timeline: 1863 -- Salon de Refuses 1910 -- First abstract painting 1914 -- WWI 1919 -- Bauhaus founded  1933 -- Hitler attains power in Germany 1933 -- Reich Culture Chamber established with Goebbels in charge ... Goebbels and some others believed that the forceful works of such artists as Emil Nolde, Ernst Barlach and Erich Heckel exemplified the Nordic spirit; as Goebbels explained, "We National Socialists are not un-modern; we are the carrier of a new modernity, not only in politics and in social matters, but also in art and intellectual matters."[14] However, a faction led by Rosenberg despised Expressionism, leading to a bitter ideological dispute which was settled only in September 1934, when Hitler declared that there would be no place for modernist experimentation in the Reich.  Also outlawed Jazz and the font Fraktur ... 1933 -- Bauhaus closes ... The Nazi movement, from nearly the start, denounced the Bauhaus for its "degenerate art", and the Nazi regime was determined to crack down on what it saw as the foreign, probably Jewish, influences of "cosmopolitan modernism".[1]  ... 1937 -- The Degenerate Art Exhibition ... Hitler had been an artist before he was a politician—but the realistic paintings of buildings and landscapes that he preferred had been dismissed by the art establishment in favor of abstract and modern styles. So the Degenerate Art Exhibition was his moment to get his revenge. He had made a speech about it that summer, saying "works of art which cannot be understood in themselves but need some pretentious instruction book to justify their existence will never again find their way to the German people".  *** recorded April 21, 2022 *** Visit us at https://chrisandrandall.com/

Satanic Verses by Salman RushdieSalman Rushdie is one of the great English language literary figures.  He has won the Brooker Prize for the best Novel in English and was a finalist twice. The focus of this talk is on the Rushdie novel, the Islamic traditions around the most controversial passages, comparisons with Christian traditions, and the reaction of Ayatollah Khomeini. But a core focus is upon how we interpret texts, especially religious texts.  Consider an incident in the gospels.  It is called The Woman at the Well.  Jesus is thirsty and asks a woman drawing water if he can have a drink.  She says yes and gives him a drink.  It turns out she is a “loose” woman, maybe even a prostitute.  But that aside there is a problem in translation.  In at least one African culture, when a woman gives a man food or drink from her hand, it is a prelude to sex.  In that particular translation of the Bible, there is a footnote explaining that Jesus is not hitting on this woman. Lesson 1:  Fidelity to the words as written can often be wrong rather than right.  Lesson 2: Our understanding can also be wrong, even if we have a clear understanding of the words. There is also a tension between the overarching goal of revelation (for those who are believers) and specific texts.  If the divine goal of revelation is to empower humans to achieve their full potential, then a focus upon a specific text intended to put a check on sin can be in contradiction with the higher goal if it is emphasized in a way that constrains human empowerment by overlooking  the higher divine purpose.   All believers want to know God's Will but God is often opaque in terms of our understanding.  (Go back to the podcast on Feuerbach is you missed that one).  I am reminded of what the great Catholic theologian Hans Kung said when he came to Dearborn in the 1980s and was challenged from the floor about how he had interpreted a specific passage. The person challenging him had absolute certainty about the meaning of a specific text regarding the future: Kung  said, “God does not act to satisfy human curiosity.”  Ouch!  Some of you will find this lecture provocative.  Good! I hope it is provocative in a way that makes you think.  This was a class lecture.  There is some interaction with students and some  references to readings.  Sorry about that.  I thought the lecture came out well and did not want to re-record it. Books by Salman Rushdie are Satanic Verses and  Joseph Anton.  Some terms and namesQureish, Hagar/Hajar, Ishmael, Abraham/Ibrahim,  Mecca, Medina, Gabriel/Jibril, circumambulate, Mahound, Salman the Scribe; Pantheon (a building in pre-Islamic Mecca where there were 360 gods); Taif; demiurge;  intersession; garaniq. Three female goddesses from Taif: Al-lat, al-Uzza, Manat.  Ayatollah Khomeini, fatwa.  Iran-Iraq War of 1980-1988.  Early biographers: Ibn Ishak, Tabari, Ibn Saad; Apostasy, blasphemy, heresy. One glitch:  A favorite translation of the Bible is The Jerusalem Bible, not The Jefferson Bible.  (There is a Jefferson Bible, consisting entirely of the words and teachings of Jesus, but it is not the one I mentioned).

Abraham Lincoln delivered two speeches that are considered among the greatest ever delivered.  One was the Gettysburg Address and one was the Second Inaugural.  Most Americans consider the Gettysburg Address to be his greatest, but Lincoln believed his Second Inaugural was his best. I agree.  It changed the way Americans thought about their country.  This is a talk I delivered to a class in the fall of 2020.  They had in front of them the speech itself.  You should print out the speech before you listen to this so you can follow along.  Lincoln had read and admired Feuerbach on how we humans generate our religious thinking.  If you have not listened to the talk on Feuerbach, and are interested, you might do that.  The last minute of the talk gets cut off. Sorry about that.  I was talking about Barack Obama's minister, Reverend Jeremiah Wright.  Reverend Wright was an amazing minister.  His congregation, which is situated in south Chicago, a very poor neighborhood, had wonderful programs.  He had educational tutoring, scholarships, jobs programs, food programs, health programs.  You name it, they did it.  I admire him in many ways.  But he had a style of preaching that was common in the Black community but not well understood outside of that tradition.  I grew up with that style.  The preacher will renounce the congregation for their sins. In my case I remember the minister saying, “You are damned and doomed to a devil's hell.”  But the renunciation was really a reassurance that you can overcome your sin and be a better person.  In one sermon Reverend Wright spoke of the tendency of people to say “God Bless America.”  The Reverend thought they were claiming a status in the eyes of God that they did not deserve.  He said, “NO!  Not God Bless America.  God Damn America!”  It may be hard to believe but that was actually an expression of patriotism, an affirmation that America could be what God meant it to be.  God is in the whirlwind and we can emerge a better nation, a nation truly under God.  But this emerged during a presidential campaign and one of the candidates was a Black man who had attended that church.  This phrase was distorted and misrepresented until candidate Obama had to renounce it.   Lincoln would have agreed with Reverend Wright.   Lincoln DID agree with Reverend Wright, as you can tell.  God is giving us a terrible punishment that we could never have imagined.  “I tremble for my country when I consider that God is just,” as Jefferson said.  Lincoln was even more graphic:  a Black drop of blood will be repaid by a dead white person.  We have to wonder how an American president would fare today if he delivered such a speech.  It was American Exceptionalism, Lincoln style. Two last points.  Reporters were keeping close track of cheering.  Most of the enthusiasm during the talk came from the Black members of the audience.  Many white people were silent.  The white members of the audience were Lincoln's base, his strongest supporters.  And every single one of them had lost someone they knew and loved in that war.  Finally, the comment by Frederick Douglass demands an acknowledgement.  Lincoln and Douglass had become personal friends.  This  unlikely friendship is  analyzed in the wonderful book Giants by John Stauffer. Douglass came by the White House that evening.  The place was packed but Lincoln singled out Douglass and asked what he thought.  Douglass demurred but Lincoln insisted.  “Mr. Lincoln.  That was a sacred effort.”  And so it was.  For those overseas, be aware that I am taking you deep into an American way of thinking.

In this episode, Craig, Adam, Matt, and Will examine an early writing of Friedrich Engels entitled "Outlines of a Critique of Political Economy". How can we interpret the evidently moralistic language in Engels' work in light of the anti-moralism which characterizes his later writings with Marx, namely within "The German Ideology". In "Outlines", Engels offers a succinct but brilliant rendering of how the division of capital and labor precipitate other kinds of contradictions under the capitalist system.  Also, the cast identifies potentially problematic formulations within the text seem to fall outside Engels' intended methodology.  Other figures mentioned include Spinoza, Hegel, Feuerbach, Stirner, Smith, Ricardo, Malthus, Foucault, Deleuze and Guattari.

When I would start my class on Religion and Politics, my first lecture would always be on Feuerbach.  He would give students a new way to think.  We could focus on the God Idea-  which we humans generate.  This had nothing to do with God but rather with human thinking.  We could analyze "outside of the circle" of believers as I would call it.  This is a bit of an intellectual discussion, but I have tried to make it accessible. If you think this might upset you, then skip it.  If you want your thinking challenged, then Carry On (as the British would say).  The students liked it. Happy studenting.

This French phrase translates, “The love of God is folly.” Brennan Manning in his book “The Ragamuffin Gospel” says that on Easter morning in France you'll see this phrase posted on the side of buildings, busses, and houses, and graffitied on sidewalks. The French sing it in their churches in worship and use it as a greeting when they wave to the neighbors. The love of God is folly. God's love is extravagant. In the season of Easter, we are remembering the profound truth that Jesus Christ, who was crucified and buried in a sealed tomb with Roman guards outside, is now risen from the dead never to die again. Death could not hold Him. Is God's initiative to send His Son into the world in love to save us and invite us to trust Him, a fool's mission? It does sound a little crazy that an all-powerful God would be born taking on the limits of humanity. He then would live a perfect life, reveal Himself in signs and wonders and miracles, teach about the kingdom of God, then face false charges, be arrested and crucified, though He was perfect. It seems illogical to take on the sins of all humanity and then be raised from the dead in victory to proclaim the forgiveness of sins to all who believe and the invitation to reconciliation in the love of God. Some say the love of God is folly. It is a fool's mission because it's illogical, irrational, and ill-advised. Perhaps even a wasted effort. The psalmist says, “The fool says in his heart there is no God” (Psalm 14:1). Contemporary philosophers might say it this way: The value of God is dead. It's as if some have concluded God is irrelevant. Could it be the German philosopher Feuerbach, who lived in the 19th century, was correct when he said God is the projection of human fears? That God didn't create us, but men created God in order to placate our own fears because of our weaknesses and limits? Is God just a figment of imagination to comfort our terrorized souls? Is Jesus alive from the dead? The truth of Easter's message is the heartbeat of God's revelation to the world. Paul said, “If Jesus Christ has not been raised, than your faith is worthless and you're still in your sins” (I Cor. 15:17). Ken Davis tells the story of a woman who saw her German Shepherd shaking the life out of a neighbor's pet rabbit. Her family didn't get along well with the neighbors, and she knew this would be a disaster. So she grabbed her broom and pummeled the dog until it finally dropped the dead rabbit from its mouth. Seeing the dead rabbit, she panicked. She grabbed the rabbit, took it inside, gave it a bath, blow dried its hair to its original fluffiness, combed its fur until it looked alive again, and then snuck into the neighbor's yard and propped it up so it looked alive. An hour later, she heard screams from next door. She went outside and asked what was going on. The neighbor woman said, Our rabbit! Our rabbit! He died two weeks ago, and we buried him. Now he's back! This is a funny and absurd story. Everybody knows dead rabbits don't come back to life. From a human logic standpoint, we'd also assert that when human beings breathe their last, they also don't come back to life. But the truth of the message of Easter says, Jesus Christ, who was crucified on the cross for the sins of the world – for my sins – was raised from the dead never to die again. In the message of Easter in Luke 24, the women went to the tomb to anoint Jesus' body. They found the stone rolled away and the tomb empty. Two angels told them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? Jesus isn't here. He is risen, just as he said.” The disciples, when the women told them what they experienced and what the angel said, believed their words to be nonsense, foolishness. Luke, the physician actually uses a medical term for nonsense. It could be translated, the babbling...
