Samonakręcająca się fala konsumpcjonizmu, który w istocie nie daje jednostkom szczęścia jest jednym z największych problemów współczesnego świata. We're not entirely certainly why Betsy selected this as today's book. Maybe she wanted a book that was merely 20 years old. Maybe it was the fact that earlier in the day, before we recorded, she had read this book to her son's preschool class. But it may be because, and we don't think we're spoiling anything here, it is one of the world's greatest readaloud picture books. And there are so many things to talk about here. Spontaneous interior canine generation. The doctor's disappearing/reappearing latex gloves. Why no one assumes that there isn't another dog inside of George at the end. Whether or not George has eaten the vet at the end. The list goes on. Show Notes: The documentary The Phantom Tollbooth: Beyond Expectations, A Documentary About the Classic Children's Book has been mentioned on this podcast and blog before. Buy it for the Tollbooth fan in your life: http://phantomtollboothdoc.vhx.tv/ The term Betsy was having a hard time thinking of is "spontaneous generation". That's right, folks. This book came in at #9 on the Top 100 Picture Books Poll of 2012: http://blogs.slj.com/afuse8production/2012/06/17/top-100-picture-books-9-bark-george-by-jules-feiffer/ Here's a small selection from the Weston Woods adaptation of the book. We think they lost something when they added all that extra text, though. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwdQISGMvcs The French for "woof" is "waouh" so Betsy wasn't too far off. The artist that Kate likes so much can be found at @Karenhallionart The two adult comics that Betsy thought were particularly keen are Abbott by Saladin Ahmed and On a Sunbeam by Tillie Walden. Minimalism has been buzzing for a while - there are websites, blogs, books and now even a documentary about the movement. While many proponents of this movement have taken to the extreme, we wonder how this looks for the average person who isn’t ready to sell all their possessions and move into a tiny home. We also noticed that this trend seems to be very male-dominated, but we suspect this movement is more than just a trend for hipster, white males. We hear from friends in our WDYT segment as they tell us about their thoughts on minimalism and how they would like to incorporate it into their lives. Then we chat with Leslie’s husband, Court, about how the movement has impacted him and the decisions that he and Leslie have made. Functional Diagnostic Practitioner and Strength and Conditioning coach, Jessica Curl is joined by Nutritional Therapist from Fat Burning Women Natalee Anderson. for Episode 236 of “Low Carb Conversations with Leah Williamson and Kara Halderman” Sit back, relax and get some sleep (well, maybe not) while co-hosts Leah and Kara chat with health and nutrition experts on the latest health headlines! Pete Evans' Documentary About the Paleo Diet Has Been Slammed! Does Less Sleep Make You Less Healthy? On this week's episode Leah and Kara talk with Jessica Curl and Natalee Anderson. We get to know Jessica as she shares her history of being a professional soccer player, her experience with fitness, diet and the shocking story off how she ripped her Achilles. Yikes! Natalee explains a past of depression, miscarriage, corporate burnout and an Autoimmune condition Arthritis Ankylosing Spondylitis where she was told her spine would fuse and her eventual fate could possibly be a wheelchair. One day she became inspired to take life into her own hands through diet, exercise and mindset and never looked back. Kara, Leah, Jessica and Natalee discuss that scandal in the paleo world that is Pete Evans new documentary, "The Magic Pill." Doctors absolutely slammed Evans for saying switching to a real foods diet can aid in treating chronic health conditions. Evan's talks about how grains effect the gut and a ketogenic diet can be beneficial for seizure patients. Unfortunately, the Australian Medical Association found this utterly insulting. Are they being too harsh, or is there validity to Evans' claims? Transitioning into the second article was based around sleep. A new study shows that poor sleep can increase obesity and being overweight. Jessica and Natalee dissect just how vital sleep can be for our metabolism and over all health. You don't want to miss it! It's like the wife who once appeared on my show wondering why her relationship with her husband had broken down. She kept saying "he used to make me so happy. He doesn't make me happy anymore' what she couldn't see was that she was the cause of her own effect. Happiness is never something you get from other people. The happiness you feel is in direct proportion to the love or happiness you're able to give. If you think something is missing in your life or you're not getting what you deserve- remember there is no yellow brick road. You lead life. It doesn't lead you." Here’s the really weird bit: We know. But we pretend that’s not what’s going on. Instead, we proudly show off our new stuff, and say things like, “You’ve got to get one of these!” Sure, it’s fun and that excitement is real. But in most cases, we haven’t really done our homework. We skip that step and go straight to believing if something’s for sale, it must be good. We’ve not learned about where our stuff comes from, what kind of harmful materials went into making those things, whether or not the people who made that stuff were treated fairly, and if there’s an environmentally responsible way to safely dispose of all that stuff when we’re done with it. So, here we are; this peculiar species, frantically racing about – consumed with doing anything we can to make enough money to buy these curious things we’re convinced will make us happy. The truly astonishing thing is how fleeting our happiness has become. It’s almost like finding the thing has become the source of our joy – even more so than the thing itself. Before we know it, we’ve become preoccupied with finding the next thing, and the next thing." Evan Zislis Quote of the Week “Failure is so important. We speak about success all the time. It is the ability to resist failure or use failure that often leads to greater success. I’ve met people who don’t want to try for fear of failing…It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all – in which case you fail by default.” ~ J. Tim JP Collins is a British entrepreneur and host of The Anxiety Podcast. In a former life as an executive, Tim reached a tipping point onstage during a big presentation and has since turned his life around to overcome his anxiety and is now helping other people do the same. Looking back Tim realised that he’d created the perfect storm: Lots of travel away from home and family. Drinking alcohol in excess and too often. Staying up late and then waking up with gallons of coffee. Years of bodily abuse with bad food & not enough exercise. Working in a job that created no meaning. During this interview, you’ll find out how Tim conquered his anxiety. Tim mentioned: Luis Villasenor from Ketogains. The Ultimate Guide To Reinventing Yourself by James Altucher. I mentioned: Minimalism, a Documentary About the Important Things. The Keto Summit. Part two of this conversation is on Tim’s podcast, where I talk about the connection between chronic inflammation and anxiety, and how some of the changes Tim made may have been measurable in blood: Anxiety disorders and inflammation in a large adult cohort Inflammatory markers included C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin (IL)-6 and tumor-necrosis factor (TNF)-a. Elevated levels of CRP were found in men, but not in women. Interleukin 6 is secreted by T cells and macrophages to stimulate immune response, e.g. during infection and after trauma. (TNF)-a is a cell signaling protein (cytokine) involved in systemic inflammation and is one of the cytokines that make up the acute phase reaction. It is produced chiefly by activated macrophages, although it can be produced by many other cell types such as CD4+ lymphocytes, NK cells, neutrophils, mast cells, eosinophils, and neurons. Immune dysregulation is especially found in persons with a late-onset anxiety disorder. Increasing evidence links anxiety to cardiovascular risk factors and diseases such as atherosclerosis, metabolic syndrome, and coronary heart disease. Chronic stress may initiate changes in the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis and the immune system, which in turn can trigger depression as well as anxiety.
